American Airlines reviews schedule for direct service to Dominica

Tourism Minister Denise Charles has announced that effective today, based on demand from American Airlines, direct service to Dominica from Miami will be reduced to three flights during the month of January.

She made the announcement during a live interview on State-Owned radio DBS on Wednesday.

According to Charles, flights will be increased to four flights weekly from February 4, 2023.

Dominica welcomed its first direct continental flight from Miami, Florida on Wednesday, December 8, 202.1

test or proving run was done on June 22, 2021. That test was not a revenue-seeking run as the flight was the first offering of this service.

This new service connects over 40 US cities to Dominica and makes Miami, Florida a connecting hub for travelers from Canada, Asia, and Europe.

The aircraft is said to have a capacity for 76 passengers, 12 first-class seats, and 64 premium seats with extra legroom and main cabin seats.

“We have decided that to keep travelers up-to-date that we will start doing quarterly travel updates and the first issue came out yesterday,” Charles revealed. “The American Airline flight is a dynamic situation and is driven by demand.”

Charles explained that her ministry held discussions with a delegation from the American Airline in November to discuss concerns about availability and airfare.

“They indicated that current demand in Dominica isn’t consistent…,” she stated. “And so in review of their schedule, they decided that the month of January based on the demand for flights they will reduce the flights to three flights.”

She continued, “We are hoping that there is a possibility that we will return to daily flights during the summer, but as I said it will be driven by consistent and sustained demand for the destination.”

She encouraged visitors to the island to book their flights early.

“The key to maintaining consistent demand is to book early,” Charles encouraged. “Normally the schedule changes probably three to six months. The airline will review their schedule and demand for a particular destination, so it’s important that we learn as a people to book early…”

Meanwhile, Charles indicated that Discover Dominica Authority (DDA) in collaboration with its stakeholders is aggressively marketing the destination and inviting visitors to come to Dominica.

“It is important for us to continue the marketing of the destination so we can have sustained demand, not just for American, but for all airlines coming to Dominica,” she said

Charles made it clear to travelers that there are seats available on Caribbean Airlines, InterCaribbean, Silver Airways, and LIAT to come to Dominica for Carnival 2023.

Imagine, Dominica does not have enough demand for American Eagle to justify more than 3 flights per month in January 2023. Yet our extra bright Prime Minister – Mr Roosevelt Skerrit, thinks that he can justify having an international Airport in Wesley?

This PM is stark raving mad, and worst of all, he is not aware how mad and stupid he really is? He who does not know that he is mad, and is really stark raving mad, is a burden that our already poor country cannot afford.

The real estate market in Dominica is down to its lowest values ever. This is an indication of how badly Dominica is doing economically. Business men must be struggling to make a profit. Parents must be fighting to make a living, with stress related illnesses very high.

It is time for a change at the top. Skerrit and Saverin must depart the stage. They have failed miserably for the last 18 years, and do not even know that,

The law of demand holds that demand for a product changes inversely to its price, all else being equal. In other words, the higher the price, the lower the level of demand.

Solution: Have an election every year.

Unless Dominica can compete internationally with destinations like Barbados, St Lucia, Antigua, etc., the majority of travelers to the island are Dominicans.

    To the Weave Queen

Here we are again talking about inviting visitors to our shores on a broader basis per say. However, my main question at this point is; What are we inviting them to? Some on here may get upset but in all honesty Dca has nothing to offer in the daytime beside a VERY SMELLY, DIRTY, NO/ DANGEROUS SIDEWALK Roseau, and after 6:00PM nothing but a few rum shops with fry bakes and chicken. Sadly, this is not going to get any better under the DLP since the middle class that can actually drive the creation and patronage of small business is bankrupt.

Thank god for the few police officers who during nightly patrols duck into dimly lit alleys to grad a quick wabio most times on credit under the guise of curtailing prostitution which they themselves frequently subsidise as part of nation building once the uniform comes off. So, I dare say if we are depending on visitors to keep AA flying directly from and to Miami bonda-nou-fann  .

Antigua recently upgraded and expanded its international airport, business is booming – just see how many thousands of Dominicans living and working there!
St Lucia is building an additional runway at its international airport, business is booming – just see how many thousands of Dominicans living and working there!
All our Caribbean neighbours have international airports and international business and tourism is booming there!
Dominica is stuck with 22 years of micro-management by Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit. He has done no major macro transformational infrastructure project in Dominica but we keep voting him back in on empty macro promises and continued micro-management!
Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit rules Dominica like a village council micro-managing a village and not like a central government managing a national economy, because he does not have the skills and competencies to do better! He does not know how after 22 years! Vote him out!

Are you not late with that observation: I would hope that you were not one of of those Dominicans who once said “we doh” want it; Dominica cannot afford International Airport. One of the most stupid question even the most educated once asks was “do you know how much it takes to maintain International Airport, one may remember I always ask in return is how much it takes to maintain Melville Hall Airport?
Our problem is simply stupid rhetoric by poor uneducated politicians, they are ignorant, people who go out and talk nonsense to a bunch of illiterate people, who does anything the politicians wants them to do.

Dominica will never be better off as long as there is a Labor Party in existence; the idiots associates labor party to working on plantations, they are prone to believe that nonsense.

Grantly Adams Int. in Barbados Vere Bird in Antigua; the View Fort in St. Lucia along with the one in Guantanamo in Cuba, still in use were left there by America and the British after the war in the 1940’s. they have constantly expanded on them to accommodate larger passenger and cargo aircraft’s.
The Americans attempted to build an Airport at Melville Hall right where it now stands, it never got off the ground because the money always finished because our people thief the money!
Paul Southwell out of Castle Bruce Premiere in St. Kitts government built an international airport during the West Indies Federation, Grenada followed by their ambitious people built their own.

What faculty you use to observe things, before you write such comment. Every Country economic improvement is relative to where they are not in comparison to others. Your so-called thousands of Dominicans working in Antigua does not necessarily mean their economic livelihood is better, leaving Dominica to seek greener pastures. Have you paused and asked yourself why Dominica does not have an international Airport before you write such ineptitude comment. Do you remember where we were, and where we are now, the hurdles this present Government had to overcome, and what they are doing to bring about better Air access to Dominica.

To suggest that this Government, did not build a major macro transformational infrastructure project in Dominica, is somewhat mind-boggling. Do you remember how many bridges we had with access to the Roseau, do you forget the PM Hospital and what we have today, do you forget the road network. Why are you so malicious and neglectful with the truth.

        Gary, stop your nonsense!

Dominica is the poorest island in the Caribbean, Dominica right now does not haven any economy.

The sale of passports won’t do. Roosevelt Skerrit and the Labor Party is a set back for the country: We are no place, just because some shell company under the guise of Something Management building houses and apartments and giving to people does not mean progress!

        Where are the jobs, Gary?

In Antigua a domestic servant who can’t read or write makes $15.00 dollars per hour more than a civil servant makes in Dominica.

If Dominica came form somewhere to where it is; there would not be more Dominicans in Antigua working; they out number the native born Antiguan’s.

What are you talking about; if you like backwardness, and poverty, that’s your glory!

But I an telling you Dominica, is all but collapse, economically.

Another example of an inept administration – DLP. A hash-tag alone cannot bring visitors to Dominica, the marketing of Dominica leaves a lot to be desired – we must think beyond or get out of that “Good Enough for Dominica” mentality. No airline is in the business, factually no enterprise, wants to run a failing operation. Everyone is in business for profit. How can American or any other airline commit to Dominica, only to turn a marginal profit or cut even, in October? Dominica’s Minister of Tourism resides in one of the most beautiful costal villages in Dominica, yet there is no indication of a developing or thriving tourism sector. Secondly, when someone chooses a destination they want a few guarantees: Safety, Entertainment (not just SEWO), and a proper medical system – none of which Dominica has to offer. Dominica’s Health care system is none existent, one must wait weeks for test results; crime is skyrocketing; after a good hike or swim what’s there?

With the 80% rule in place which determines airline profitability on any route, it means mathematically, we can consistently fill 51 seats regularly, when you minus 10 first class seats from the “E176.” If this isn’t an indictment on the Dominica Labor Party and its gross incompetence as a political organization, I don’t know what is.

These decisions have real world consequences for the average traveler to Dominica. It means with three flights per the month of January, one would need at least two weeks of vacation time to attend a wedding, funeral or conduct a business transaction. That’s not how the real world functions. Despite every form of reality imagined, we continue to love our Prime Minister, the incompetence of his Administration a cabinet that is inexperienced and over matched for the task at hand. For a few pieces of free Ham, Turkey during the Christmas Holiday Season and a free house we have sold our common sense and the ability to reason and make informed decisions accordingly.
Consequently, we are going nowhere fast in Dominica.

We’re seeing classic supply and demand at play here. Additionally, a pragmatic thinking government and tourism ministry would review travel patterns during this month, find out why vacationers are choosing other destinations and implement a short-, medium- and long-term approach to this problem. Of course, we are talking about the Dominica Labor Party and its low-information-voting bloc. This will be spun as hatred of country and government. It is this kind of myopic, self-centered, and narcissistic behavior that that been our detriment for the past 22 years. It is why we are last in foreign-direct-investment compared to our neighbors and why we’re the only island in the English-speaking Caribbean who has not doubled their Gross Domestic Product GDP in over two decades.

Dominica and Dominicans (those lawless ones) are getting by on the sales of Drugs and Guns. One day China is going to pull out or moved out, then we’ll know what day it is. If there’s not enough passengers to fly into Dominica at a small airport….Then where the hell are we going to have enough passengers to fly on a 737 Jet plane ✈️ to Dominica? And how many flights per day? One flight ✈️ every Carnival 🎡? Figure out where the main problem lies.

Could this be an indication that American Eagle is about to phase out it’s operation from Dominica for a second time due to a lack of passengers traveling between Dominica and Miami?

And messy; just in case you are delusional, let me bring you back to reality by suggesting that you research the difference between American Airline and American Eagle, you will discover they are to different entity’s, they are not one of the same.
Make yourself a fool if you wish that American Airline fly ‘s to Dominica and let it be your dream that will not materialize perhaps only after, and if an International Airport is built.

And FYI, in case you have not used the new service, passengers go to the American Airlines space at the terminal to print an “American Airlines” boarding pass and to the American Airlines counter for their checked luggage. So what’s the big deal?

Mark the reason I suggest that is because the government of Dominica keep emphasizing “American Airline” when it is plainly written o the Aircraft “American Eagle.
Now there is truly a connection to American Airline; as a matter of fact there are several other Airlines out there associated with American Airline; nevertheless; if you flew on American Eagle, and there is an issue where one have to file a law suit in a court of law; the victim, cannot sue American Airline, they specifically have to Sue American Eagle.
Tell me; when you buy a ticket to fly on American Eagle, does it read American Airline?
The emphasis on American Airline is to impress Dominicans that American Airline operates in Dominica.
They operate from different terminals here.

Mind you Mark, it is one of the same American Eagle which operated in Dominica, they flew from Puerto Rico, to Dominica until they withdrew there services, the only difference is this type of Jet powered Aircraft fly at longer…

Francisco, the agreement was signed between the Government of Dominica and American Airlines, not American Eagle therefore the article is correct in stating that American Airlines is revising its schedule to Dominica.
You are trying to make it a big deal because of the “markings” on the aircraft. Nobody is trying to impress anyone here. What is there to impress? Less flights to Dominica? It’s all in your head.

Instead of American eagle having to come down full and go back empty, dca being a hub would some what prevent that. In addition it would bring jobs and because it wouldn’t be so difficult to get to the island there might be more of an appeal to want to go there in the first place. Today there is not even a connecting flight from Barbados or any other Caribbean island to get me from the U.K. to Dominica the same day. And I’m sorry Denise but there is no connecting flight from Antigua by Liat either if I chose to fly there from London. The best way I found is to fly from Bristol to Paris Orly by Esyjet for a fee of around £60 return and connect with Corsair or in AirCaraibe to Martinique for around £600 return, overnight there and take the ferry next day straight to Roseau. Honestly, it is as if you really don’t want people to visit Dominica. it is easier and doesn’t take longer to fly all the way to Australia for me. Your ignorance is so pathetic, Miami is a connecting hub for travelers from Europe and Asia to Dominica via the American Airlines, and yes Dominica was added to AA destination for travelers around the world and the US who wish to travel to Dominica using Miami as a hub to move its passengers to the connected flights to reach their intended destination Dominica, comfortably. There are reasons why there are no direct flights from the U.K. to Dominica the same day, and not only Dominica, geographical distance, the cost, and type of plane needed to make the flights based on fuel consumption and cost.

The answer to how Dominica is going to sustain these new hotel developments, does not rest in your opinions and beliefs, so long.

The size of the airport is not decisive. No passenger flies to a destination because of the airport. The DEMAND for visiting a destination is important. Not enough passengers to fill a 76-seat airplane, not a good sign. For an airline to profitable an 85% payload is needed. That means that each flight would require 64 passengers. That number could be lower if all 12 first class seats are filled; those passengers pay more. If the demand is high, then there may be more weekly flights. A few destinations even get 2 daily flights.
Keep in mind that vacationers mostly arrive/depart during the weekends. So, why fly during the week if there are not enough passengers.
The demand depends on what the destination has to offer. However, there is also competition. For Americans it may be Costa Rica, which is beloved because of its nature and ecology. It has 3 UNESCO Heritage Sites that are protected National Parks. Dominica may want to explore if it has a location to be recognized by UNESCO

      There you go Sir –

Morne Trois Pitons National Park is a national park in Dominica established in July 1975, the first to be legally established in the country. It became a World Heritage Site in 1997.

The park is named after its highest mountain, Morne Trois Pitons, meaning mountain of three peaks. The park is an area of significant volcanic activity. Features within the park include the Valley of Desolation, a region of boiling mud ponds and small geysers; the Boiling Lake; Titou Gorge; and Emerald Pool.

The mountain is the second-highest peak in Dominica, being exceeded only by Morne Diablotins (1,447 m (4,747 ft)).

In the airline business, the profit margin is mostly razor thin. Plans and strategies must be frequently reviewed in order to be competitive and to maximize profits. Dominica must develop creative ways to attract many more visitors as the potential is there.

Where leadership is lacking everything else is lacking.

Dominica is jeopardizing its only UNESCO World Heritage Site by selling part of the Morne Trois Pitons National Park to a private cable car developer.

And the lack of demand suggests that the Ministry of Tourism and Discover Dominica are completely ineffective. That’s where nepotism rather than skills and experience gets you.

When you’re interacting with ignorant people who are devoid basic commonsense and logic, analysis like yours have and will continue to fall on death ears. Exactly they say it’s the nature island, but look at Roseau the capital, it’s a concrete jungle, so many open spaces with abandoned buildings that can be used to beautify the city and much less the parking situation where a parking complex is greatly needed, right next to the Financial Center is a great place for a multi-story building to house all Roseau traffic

You see they keep lying and believing their own lies that American Airlines has direct flight to Dominica. The fact is “American Airline ” is not flying to Dominica, never had a single flight to Dominica.

American Eagle, is a totally different entity, which flew to Dominica from Puerto Rico to Dominica until a few years ago when the withdrew their services.

As usual in Dominica the lies prevails over the truth; up to the time it is written on the aircraft in bold letters “American Eagle, they are still trying to impress people that American Airline is flying to Dominica.

I reiterate American Eagle & American Arline are totally different entities; they are not one of the same!

Okay, Minister Denise Charles. However, what I am more interested in, is knowing when will this International Airport of ours be completed.

I want to leave Toronto International to fly to Dominica, without having to get off the Airline that I am on, regardless of how many times it stops to pick other passengers.

This getting off thing, from one airline and reboarding another one is now too tough for me, at my age.

Two years ago, my sister got to Barbados too late, because of that same situation, so she missed the Airline that would take her to Dominica; she had to overnight in Barbados, something that I hate so much, especially now–the pain of having to drag my luggage to a Hotel and from it, to do the boarding process all over again.

I am beginning to think that this International Airport construction is way too slow, wee! So hurry up now!

So, elizabethlxavier, if AA cuts service because we cannot fill a 76 seat aircraft, why do you think AC will attract sufficient load to fly to Dominica?

      • elizabethlxavier
        January 13, 2023

Anon B True, did you read what I wrote? I spoke about the need for an airline to fly direct to Dominica, not about people filling up and airline. That is the need for an International Airport

While I must get off at Florida, from Air Canada, to transfer to another airline, to fly to Dominica, people of St. Vincent, Grenada, or St. Lucia, remain on that Air Canada flight, regardless of how many places it stops to pick up other people, because it will take them straight to their destination.

In 2013 for my mom’s funeral, even if I left Toronto at 8am, two days before, I had to overnight in Barbados, to fly to Antigua the next day, to catch another Liat Airline by 5pm, which never came. The one that came 3 hours later took me home by 9pm.

I thought I was going to miss my moms funeral if I had slept at in Antigua. The funeral was scheduled for 3pm; it takes 2 hours from the airport to my village. How would I deal with that kind of hassle?

Such comment from you Elizabeth, Roosevelt Skerrit mama, will cause Roosevelt to turn on you. I cannot believe you ask a question like that, when you know that nasty crook Roosevelt Skerrit is the obstacle in the way of the building of an international Airport in the country.
In the first place the kind of resources that is required to pay for the building of an International Airport in Dominica we don’t have in our local treasury, and the reality is that no local banks has that amount of money.

Secondly, no international or foreign financial institutions will loan our nation money for such purpose when they know the thief in Dominica will utilize the money for personal wealth.

Elizabeth, the government of Trinidad & Tobago loaned the people of Dominica via the UWP over forty years ago to build an International Airport; the Labor Party (including Roosevelt Skerrit) said “we doh want it). They said that Edison James: will continue.

        Con:
Yes, indeed Roosevelt, the late Rosie Douglas, Ian Douglas, were the main culprits who said Edison James wants an International Airport so that he can import more drugs into the country!
And that’s how stupid the labor party members you are supporting, the corrupted people one especially you are supporting are!

Roosevelt Skerrit when he became prime minister, he went to St. Vincent, and brought Ralph Gonzales to Dominica to tell Dominicans that Dominica does not need an International Airport, all that is needed is the refurbishing of the terminal, and installing landing.

If the labor party member were not all dumb stupid people; derailing the construction of the Airport when the UWP was building it, we would have had an International Airport in operation, more than forty almost fifty years ago!

Ian Douglas said the almost four hundred million dollars the UWP was spending was too much Labor could build it for a fraction less, where is that fraction less Ian big…

    You see, the government would like you to believe its all AA fault. My questions to the Weave Queen and Dr. Piping-Her are;
    1. Have we negotiated with AA and propose canceling landing fees etc owed?
    2. Are we allowing them to use the terminal space- where we check in- free of charge?
    3. Have we discussed giving ground services free of charge since we can use NEP employees?
Our leaders lack vision, hence all they see at this point is the subsidy they will be paying when airlift capacity is not what was anticipated or sold to AA. Sadly, when it’s voting time there is always plenty money available to fly in plane loads of Di-A.S-POOR-AHS.ES.

If anyone been to the AA website from September of last year, the average ticket price was about $1500 USD from Miami to DOM and back. It’s alleged that was the direction given by the mad leader to cover the airlift capacity issue. But we like it so in Dca. The RESET day-khar-laying us from the rear with no grease to ease the pain…

So if there isn’t demand to fill a 76 seater from a very large, wealthy market that is 3.5 hours away, I hardly think any other airline would give Dominica a second look any time soon.
And herein lies the problem with people clamoring for an international airport. I would like to fly directly to Dominica, but unless it is lucrative for an airline, they are simply going to stay away from that destination. And it is not just the ability of the airline to turn over dollars. They have limited resources and they are going to employ those resources where they can maximize their profits.

“Mr. Deull’s most famous attributed utterance is that “everything that can be invented has been invented.” Charles Duell spoke those words in 1899, a hundred and twenty-four (124) years ago. If the world inventors and scientists listened to his personal convincing nonsense Charles spoke, American Eagle would not be sitting in Dominica as we are debating, man would not have flown to the moon and back, in general space would not be explored, I would not be able to electronically read DNO and respond to you, I would not have the knowledge of an Electronic/Electrical Engineer there would be no motor vehicle running on fossil fuel and battery powered traveling at over two hundred miles per hour.

There are many places on this planet without beaches, as a matter of fact I’ve been to places in Europe which attracts tourist in the Summer time: by the millions without beaches.
What is the difference in Dominica and St. Lucia; I been there, the only difference is right now the government of Dominica is corrupted, a one man dictatorship has ruined the country.
St. Lucia is as rugged as Dominica, yet there is something that pulls investors in the tourist industry to the country, Roosevelt pays people billions to build guess houses without results!
          Only a fool does that!
In the 1960, Bird of Antigua, made lands available to investors to build hotels, but the investors put their money into the instructors

Telemaque, are you saying that before 124 years ago, nothing was invented?

But the man in question said “everything that can be invented” I perceive him saying that the ideas of invention were already there, but the time that the person, or people who had to bring forth that invention had to come.

Learn to read between the lines or listen carefully to understand what is written or spoken, otherwise no one would understand the Word of God.

Hear the words of the apostle John as he said about Jesus: “All things were made by Him, and nothing that was made, was made without Him”.

Right here, it is being said that the concept of computers (for example) was there from the start, the inventors would come at God’s given time.

I perceive Mr. Charles Duell’s words as a prophecy, which is a gift of a the Spirit, however he spoke it.

The second coming of Christ Jesus was spoken by He, Himself, 2000 years ago. Is that foolishness to you?

“Telemaque, are you saying that before 124 years ago, nothing was invented?”

Absolutely not read it again, you will find I said one hundred-twenty-four years ago a man by the name of Mr. Charles Duell said “everything that could be invented was already invented.”

The moral implies he was absolutely short sighted, and could not see into the future, he was contented with the way things were 124 years ago.

You will understand this: remember the Prophet, when his servant came our and saw the army, he cried out to him saying they were out numbered:

And the prophet said to God to open his eyes so that he can see, and he saw the legends of Angels ready to protect him and the prophet.
