Anette Sanford donates 50% of parliamentary salary to DNA

Nurse Anette Sanford, UWP senator in the Dominica parliament

In recognition of the tremendous contribution that nurses in Dominica have been making in the fight against COVID-19 and to health care in general in the country, United workers Party senator, Anette Sanford, has decided to donate fifty percent of her parliamentary salary to the Dominica Nurses Association (DNA).

Sanford, who is herself a trained nurse, made the pledge during a solidarity message released over the weekend, on the occasion of Nurses Week which was observed in Dominica from the 11th to the 17th of May, 2020.

Sanford wrote, “Florence Nightingale, the great pioneer of modern nursing, once said that ‘very little can be done under the spirit of fear.’ Almost 110 years after her death, this saying could not be truer about our wonderful nurses. Like true fearless soldiers on the frontlines, nurses and other health practitioners around the world have been fighting a silent enemy, the Coronavirus (COVID – 19), and the battle is not yet won.”

She said her “brothers and sisters” of the nursing profession in Dominica have risen to the challenges and have taken COVID-19 head-on.

“And I pause to say thank you,” Sanford stated. “If you are a nurse, please take a moment to accept my best wishes for your bravery and unrelenting service. I pray for strength and protection over you and your family, as you continue the good fight against COVID – 19.”

Sanford contested and lost the last general election as the United Workers Party (UWP) candidate in the Salybia constituency. Her message to the nurses was all-encompassing.

“On behalf of my family, the constituents of the Kalinago Territory, my parliamentary colleagues and other members of parliament, and the lovely citizens of Dominica by extension, we say thank you and ‘HAPPY NURSES WEEK,” the opposition senator stated.

Sanford exhorted nurses to “continue to serve with the spirit of care, not fear, and keep that lamp of compassion for all those who fall under your care burning. From one nurse to the other, I love you and may the spirit of the Lord be with you.”

She said that in keeping with the observation of Nurses Week, she would donate 50% of her salary as a parliamentarian to the Dominica Nurses Association (DNA) to assist with ongoing work.

“I hope that the good Lord can multiply my humble offerings,” the parliamentarian remarked.

    @ Busybody Barbara
You are one of Skerrit’s most loyal and asinine worshippers. Your credibility is below zero for giving this corrupt individual and his gang of clueless disciples such unreserved support. What are you getting in return for your unwavering support? It has to be that you are paid very handsomely.

      Yea Ibo

The same amount you receive to bury all wrong doings on the other side even when supposedly independent media bring the facts about corruption to the public.

Ever heard the word democracy? Those uncharitable descriptions of some fellow Dominicans who put themselves forward to serve are a matter of your opinion sir! Not sure why I have to keep reminding you and your colleagues that I am entitled to form my own opinion under the Dominica Constitution.

I hope that you also beat up on those members of your cabal who are beginning to publicly voice their frustration with the “going no where” dilemma which they are witnessing INSIDE! I am not the one influencing their thinking. These are people who I think would be the last to publicly denigrate their own but they are probably at their wits end, seeing the things about which you are so blind!

I wish you well Ibo! The feelings of ill will toward others eventually consume us no matter how long it takes!

Yes Anette, who do you think you fooling with your Dodgy publicity stunt designed to attract the public’s attention you would be better off helping your people kalinago and let that so-called Union representatives if there is one look after their members and not only for their selfs a bunch of arrogant plunkers.

Nonsense, the nurses dont need this, the kalinago people you say you representing,at least a few of them i am sure would be grateful for some assistance

What statistical data are you basing your statement that the nurses don’t need this. I am not saying you are wrong, I am only asking what data you have to support your statement. I am sure the DNA would like to compare their data with yours if you have any. Time to put up or shut up.
But let me guess, you will do neither, rather you will start to castigate me and mine. You will start name calling and insinuating and all sort other of things, instead of responding with the supporting data I am asking for.
You are in this case what is often called a “blowhard”, an empty vessel.

There is something about you lady that is different from the rest of your bunch!

First you work with your community and the Kalinago Council in the best interest of your people to launch a vegetable gardening project. Never mind how small, it is the spirit which it demonstrates which is important!

Next, whether symbolically or otherwise, you share your parliamentary earnings with the Nurses’ Association, I assume as a gesture of solidarity. In other words, walking the talk!

Why do I get a sense of “leadership that matters” to people on the horizon?

Please protect yourself and be prepared for the backlash lady because positive speech and action are foreign to your colleagues!

Barbara . I have followed your contributions for sometime now and you always tend to attack or try to put the leadership of the UWP in bad light. The Skerrites have 18 ministers. 5 senators and about 12 advisors in addition to about 20 ambassadors; Yet you see something about the lady that is different from the rest of her bunch…emmmh! why not the rest of the members of parliament? that would definitely come across as being more objective, but no you have to go after her so called bunch. Then in the same breath you have said that you are nonaligned and an objective person …….I wish you could use your objectivity to examine whether we can justify Dominica having 18 ministers in parliament and in cabinet with an additional five senators in an island of under 70,000 people. Are we getting value for money? Couldn’t the earnings of this oversize cabinet of ministers and advisors be used to walk the talk ? it would surely help don’t you agree?

          Hi Childish
My contributions are always contextualised. I am usually responding to some malicious comments or attacks just so that readers can get a different perspective from the usual one-sided diatribes.

Oh, but now that you mentioned it, the Cabinet is indeed large and of course the more parliamentarians who contribute from their salaries for a worthy cause, the better. No dispute there.

On balance though, apples are by no means oranges. A constituency which can be covered by a Parl Rep. in one day in Antigua because of its terrain, will take a Dominican Parl. Rep 5 days. Other arguments can follow the same logic. An area which will require say 5 million dollars for a development in Barbados will require 20 million in Dominica as we may have to take down a couple hills or mountains. That’s the way it has been for all our governments right?

By the way, I think the ruling party inherited the 21 constituency boundaries right? I don’t think they established them.

Good morning to you and yours, hope you are all being safe and staying in good health. I would like to refer you to the bible if I may. Research your bible for stories about giving. She is giving from her little, therefore it may mean much more than someone else who may donate a bigger dollar amount, but out of their plenty. I say thanks to her, and may others follow and do what they can.
May you and yours have a wonderful Wednesday.

Dominican to Heart – Lennox hasn’t given anything back to Dominica? emmh OK! but those who gave to him, gave from their heart; he didn’t have a gun to anybody’s head or attempted to defraud or steal from the peoples treasury. On the contrary he has helped the people of Dominica by having the Hungry Hyenas pay back the peoples money to the treasury. Let me remind you of the $750,000.00, yes over half a million dollars was made to be paid back to the peoples treasury from the alleged Bin and Fertilizer boobool, also Under the land transfer deal I remember someone had to pay back over 50.000.00 to the treasury as a form of short payment; but it gets worst Chien’s millions, ,Petro Carib millions , the 1.2 billion all belonging to the people’s treasury is missing.! so whereas Lennox may have been helped by genuine, above board donations from poor people ,those of you that already continue to defraud the poor people treasury for your own benefit- what a blasted SHAME!1

I find she is too much of a loose canon and all over the place doing her own thing. If she was gonna donate, then she should have planned a meeting with her UWP team so they all donate. Mow tge rest of the UWP team in parliament look like fools, and if they come out now to give ut doesn’t seem as sincere.
My humble opinion of her random self centered attention seeking actions is that she doh have good head. Its best she gave $1000 donation, instead of presenting it as 50% of her salary- now she is embarrassing the rest of her team for cheap attention.
Is it a one time donation or is it going to be for the rest of her time in parliament- DNO should ask this question. Because if it isn’t then she’s even more of a joke.
And those who would say some is better tham nothing, or what I’m donating- what are these parliamentarians doing to deserve their salaries- 5 months into the year and only 5 days work in parliament- they should get paid per day in the house!!!

      May 20, 2020

I see absolutely nothing wrong with someone taking the initiative and blazing a trail. Its not about making people look good or bad, but rather doing the right things at the right time.

You are making assumptions… how do you know that perhaps they did not speak about making a team donation? I always know Anette as a team person, she never does some thing without team consultation, maybe the team decided that she could do it on her own as each candidate is doing their own share in their community?
What about the other parliamentarians in government holding offices and getting an 8000 dollar salary? They have done nothing
      but say “thank you”.
The DNA needed the help to make the nurses feel special during nurses week and no one came forward.
So bless this little angel who stood for her nurses. She know what they go through.

Are you now suggesting that the tail should wag the dog? Annette Sanford is one of the most recent Parliamentarians and she must go to the UWP which is in existence for over 25 years to suggest that they do what she did? She is like a loose cannon because she chooses to stand away from the negativity and selfishness of her colleagues?

I just warned her in a post a few minutes ago that she is going to get it for doing something good. Her kind are not supposed to say or do anything positive in Dominica. Just as I thought, here you go.

She look like she could be a very good representative for the Kalinago people and also a good minister of government. You should have accepted Skerrit’s offer to run on a Labor party ticket at the last election instead of opting to run for the losers. I love, admire, adore and respect this fair lady. She’s my favorite politician although her stint in politics is very recent. Mrs. Stanford is humble; very intelligent; articulate; forward thinking; compassionate; altruistic and sincere. She’s a rare breed of a politician but even a better human being. This gesture of giving 50% of her parliamentary salary to the nurses and her unrelenting advocacy on their behalf for an increase in salary and better working conditions speaks volumes about her core values and her strait-laced character.
Mrs. Stanford, the country has lost its moral bearings. It needs you, and others of your ilk, to restore trust and decency and take it out of its present moral decadence.

      So Shaka

Go and make your presence felt and heard at your next delegates conference. You have heard the recent astounding public pronouncements from some heavy weight funders and organisers about their dissatisfaction with the state of things inside!

Stop focussing on Skerrit and his supporters. He has to leave at some time and I’m sure, sooner than later. Shouldn’t you people be getting ready for that event, including the important issue of leadership? The more you all stay on this site shooting venom against Skerrit, the stronger he grows. I get the feeling that if you all awoke one morning and Skerrit had disappeared you all wouldn’t know what to do or say next. He has actually become the purpose for some people waking up to a new day every day!

He was expressing his frustration PUBLICLY and basically saying Skerrit will win the next election if you all do not step back and do a hard election post mortem? He has had it with what is going on in your party. If you all keep doing what you are doing now you are sure to stay where you are.

We experience our first corrupted election the day the coalition under the leadership of Roosevelt Douglas, siege power,By the way I was told that Rosie is a certain fellow biological father:

(I Francisco know, but I doh talking eh!)

Anyway since after the first election after the coalition; every other election in the country, was actually stolen; the other fellow is a thief, the man buys people, hence for a few dollars Dominicans sells  their soul, they will kill their mother for a single piece of lumber; which cannot build a house.

The first corrupted siege of the crooked  election was when that fat ……………… Bannis jump from UWP to the coalition causing then to form the government.

That nonetheless, was a picnic to what we experience over the past twenty-five years at the hands of that corrupted crook, that little wet-back boy sir doctor knight Roosevelt Skerrit. When $1,2 billion is used to buy election?

Fifty percent of your salary is not very much; since your actual salary in that position is peanut change, don’t struggle simply to impress people!

Francisco why do you always have to be such a miserable old git. You should be praising the young woman for doing such an unselfish gesture. As you mentioned, she might not be as well off as you but you can see she has a heart of gold. You should probably follow her example and donate some of the millions you are supposedly sitting on in the US, to such a worthy cause. Action speak louder than words. I tremble to think of what democracy would be like under that team. So you lose your individuality once you join that cult?

She is showing them something to do other than sit idly every day opposing everything good for the country and wishing doom and gloom upon our people. About 5 or 6 of the people on that team do absolutely nothing from day to day, no work that anybody can point to. Nada.

Haven’t you all noticed how much energy is required to run this country? We go from one disaster to the next because of our geographical location. If you cannot whip up energy in your personal life to do anything useful how are you going to do it for other people, the citizens of our lovely country?

Didn’t you see how much energy, motivational skills, management acumen, resource prioritisation, team work etc. etc. which were required to manage COVID-19? Thank God for the results so far. Others were wishing for thousands of us to die to embarass Skerrit! Sick bunch!
