Dominicans are now enjoying lower prices for gasoline, diesel, kerosene and Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG).

Director of Trade Matthan Walter has announced the new prices which came into effect on Monday 18th May, 2020.

“Effective Monday, the 18th day of May 2020, the price of petroleum products across the board will be significantly reduced when compared to regulated prices over the last few years,” he said. “Gasoline will reduce from $9.79 per gallon to $7.38. Diesel will be reduced from $9.21 per gallon to $6.44. Kerosene will be reduced from $7.92 to $4.99 per gallon.”

Walter said the 20lbs liquid petroleum gas cylinder or LPG, popularly used by households, will be reduced to EC$24.43 in Roseau and environs and no more than $26.23 across the various regions.

“These substantial decreases in the product price is a contingent on the large supplies of this product on the market causing saturation, there is, therefore, a decrease in demand,” the trade official stated.

Walter explained that this is due to the lack of movement of planes, cruise ships and vehicles for example as a result of the CoronaVirus (Covid-19 Pandemic) which caused lockdowns across and in many countries across the globe.

He said the Ministry of Trade and Commerce and by extension, the Government of Dominica, is pleased to have so regulated and to announce the said reductions which will greatly benefit citizens, “in this unprecedented, trying and most difficult time.”

It is amazing, also astonishing  that the West Indies oil Company has long defunct, no longer in existence for more than fifty years; yet it still exist in Dominica.

And before anybody open their mouth on me; when the company was getting set up, I the Kid from Wesley was the go between the late doctor Joseph Liverpool who was the Lawyer representing the WIOC, dealing with the Patrick John Government.

JoJo Karam was the then agent, until he was under-mind by some corrupted Dominicans who did not want him to have the agency, a corrupted Bank in Dominica help to derail Karam off the tracks.

Our people are the most wicked people on the planet, that is why there is so much poverty in Dominica.

The chairman and owner of the WIOC is/was Dominica born Frank D. St. Hilaire, he wanted to build the refinery in Dominica, he was denied the privilege; hence he took it to Antigua; because Dominicans said “we doh want it!”

Why write and make comments without some knowledge as to the matter at hand. Do you think that Dominica gets it oil from the Middle- east, wallow in your ignorance, have a good day.

Dominican authorities did not reduce the price of fuel. Fuel prices are reduced globally due to the global decline in the demand which forced the price of oil to go down which is a direct the impact of Covid 19.

    Truth be told

It is time for the Dominican authorities come clean and honest with the people. We are not fools.

You are just another one in the herd mentality.

My question is why, unlike in many other countries, government regulates this price at all.

Will you don’t know business men, they don’t always set prices to benefit the public. Free enterprise doesn’t work in all instances, gov’t always does a better job in that area.

      • May 22, 2020

If government did a better job than free enterprise, then when global oil prices dropped, gas prices would come down faster in DA than in the States. But that’s not what happens, it takes much longer in DA.

And this isn’t even a “red vs. blue” kind of comment. It’s just the nature of politics relative to economics.

Why would you expect the oil prices to come down faster in Dominica than the US. The methods by which The US gets it’s oil is vastly different than how Dominica gets theirs and there is also a difference between the two Countries in the distribution chain as to how the oil reaches the consumer. Your exception is wishful thinking. This is not about The Government doing a better job than free enterprise, its about the disparity in their economies.

What is it you are trying to say, can you be more specific.

Thanks for your kind consideration. At a time like this when more people are forced to stay at home, the price drop on cooking gas (LPG) and kerosene is very much appreciated. Gasoline and Diesel price drop will also help those who still have to get their goods to market and provide transportation for others who still need to get around. Thanks again.

Only now they care to do that? Crude oil dropped to just over $20 a gallon some 8 weeks ago. Furthermore, they still only passed a fraction of the price drop on! A classic case of Profiteering by the government on the back of its already impoverished citizens.

When you say only now they care, do you know how silly you are, it is beyond comprehension, it is rotted in your ignorance of not understanding The ALBA Alliance and the Petrocaribe agreement, if you do not comprehend such thing you will always remain in perpetual ignorance writing such nonsense. You can write all the nonsense and express worthless opinions that has nothing to do with the reality that Dominica ad Dominicans have benefited tremendously from The ALBA Alliance and the Petrocaribe agreement, and I may also add the other member States in the region, they to have benefited tremendously from The ALBA Alliance and the Petrocaribe agreement, so long for your silliness.

The title of this article is very purposefully misleading. Government fees are the reason Gas prices are high as well government regulation on petroleum products.

There is nothing here to celebrate. Absolutely nothing. It’s because of this controlled environment created by Government is the sole reason why our gas prices don’t reflect what is happening on the world market with petroleum.

They keep it at a constant which enables them to rip greater benefits from the higher prices. Oil prices went below $0.00 and oil companies are asking and giving oil in advance to suppliers just to get what they have pumped out of there hand because they are pumping more than the world storage capacity and more than what we are consuming.

This marginal decrease is not what we should be paying at the pumps. Once again people these prices are still to high and there is nothing to celebrate but only that they had no choice but to lower the prices.

What a crap of nonsense. What is misleading about the above article. Isn’t it a fact Dominicans are paying less right now at the pump for gas, and may be even the lowest in the Eastern Caribbean. Do you know how Dominica gets it petroleum supply.Have you not heard of Petrocaribe, through the ALBA Alliance. If you understood such agreement you would not be writing such crap in the opening of your comment. I do not know what part in the world you live. Dominica does not get it’s petroleum supply through the normal stranded route through private wholesalers and middlemen. Please do not flaunt your ignorance without knowing the basic facts ignoring how Dominica gets its petroleum supply.

Your understanding of something does not make it so, I’m referring to your statement about how Oil prices (crude oil) went below $0.00 and oil companies are asking and giving oil in advance to suppliers, why do you believe in such fantasy. The only thing that has a $0.00 value is the air we inhale.

You finally proofed to me that you do NOT know what you are talking about. Alba? Alba is a thing of the past! It’s gone! PetroCaribe is a thing of the past! No more fuel from Venezuela! The US has an oil embargo on Venezuela and furthermore since the Dominican government left Venezuela high and try with US$ 100 million and ultimately had to write it off. Nobody knows where the money went. Just for your benefit, Dominica’s petroleum nowadays comes from Trinidad or Guyana. Get your facts right!!!

Its a lie .government did not reduce the price of gas..its the other way around..gas price has drop world wide…dam lie…play macho .to simple minds not mine

    • May 20, 2020

….., government could have kept the price high and not pass on anything savings to the consumers and we would have to buy it at the higher price. In the OECS the steepest fuel price drop is in Dominica.

When I read comments like yours it says a lot about what partisan politics has done to your mind. Your comment is so silly, basically, your understanding of something does not make it so. The economics of that commodity call oil from it’s extraction from ground to it’s refining is complex and occult. When you say “government did not reduce the price of gas..its the other way around..gas price has drop world wide” such statement shows gross ignorance of things you do not understand, it is like looking at something with an impaired vision, I will leave it at that, believe what ever you want to believe.
