Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) meeting virtually in Special Session on Tuesday 11 May unanimously agreed to appoint Dr. Carla Natalie Barnett as the 8th CARICOM Secretary-General.
Dr. Barnett, a national of Belize, is the first woman and the first Belizean to be selected for the post. She will replace Ambassador Irwin LaRocque who is completing his second term.
A statement from CARICOM Chairman and prime minister of Trinidad and Tobago, Dr. Keith Rowley says the new Secretary General will assume office on 15 August 2021.
It goes on t state that Heads of Government in congratulating Dr. Barnett on her selection, recognised the historic moment for the Community.
A former Deputy Secretary General of CARICOM, Dr. Barnett was formerly vice president of the Belize Senate and has served in various ministerial capacities in her country’s government. She has also served as Financial Secretary of Belize and Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Belize, as well as Vice-President (Operations) of the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB).
Dr. Barnett attained her Ph.D. in Social Sciences from the University of the West Indies, (UWI) Mona Campus in Jamaica. She also holds a Master of Science degree in Economics from the University of Western Ontario in Canada, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics from the UWI.
Congratulations Dr. Barnett. Mr. Larocque served the region well and with distinction. We do pray for prosperity and well being in the region.
Will there be a 9th and 10th one before Caricom is ratified? My kids grand children will be looking forward to it.

Mrs Carla B might be the highest ranking Kalinado to ever attain this position or any, since European conquest. Her culture is directly related to the Nature Island Native people, this may be the era for a new perspective, a Woman’. Caricom needs new direction, as only a Indigenous can give, one thing for sure, the Lady leader will need all the help she can muster in post Slavery/ Colonial/ so-called independence era.
I thought the same as well. Visited Belize a few years ago and absolutely love the people. Black and indigenous folks mostly, just like Dominica. Their cuisine and aspects of their culutre is very much like ours. Im hoping positive change i made and the region’s indigenous need more representation, especially in the Amazon region (Guyana shares part of that forest) where deforestation is an issue.

But we know skerrit is the kind of person that like to make “friends” with people who have influence, especially if they have more influence than him. that is just his nature, like to come smiling calling people comrad when he have his own agenda.
But now, as the leader of the nation, be it me or skerrit or linton or whoever, it would be in the best interest of Dominica to be on good terms with the new Secretary General, for good diplomacy and advancement of Dominica and the region.

Clown, review that woman credentials, you will find that she is many times more, and better qualified for the job, than Dominica bend-head Larocque, who was nothing but a token placed in that position.
