I have a biblical responsibility to help the poor – PM

Skerrit said his responsibility to help the poor is biblical
Skerrit said his responsibility to help the poor is biblical

Prime minister Roosevelt Skerrit has vowed to continue social services initiated by his government saying he has a ‘biblical responsibility to help the poor.’

“It is not about politics,” he told the Kairi’s Next Level program earlier this week. “It is about a responsibility that I have as a leader to try my best in the circumstances and use the resources the Lord has made available to myself and this country to help the poor.”

Some of the government’s social services were criticized by the leader of the United Workers Party (UWP), Lennox Linton, who said they were delivered on a political basis to some while hundreds are left unassisted.

The prime minister said Linton’s statements differentiates the Dominica Labour Party (DLP) from the UWP. “They have always criticized the Yes We Care program,” he said. “They are not a caring party. They were not a caring government when they were in office … they were preoccupied with themselves.”

According to the prime minister, the UWP does not ‘know what compassionate is.’

“And besides as a leader, I have the responsibility to help improve the lives of people,” he stated. “I also believe that I have a biblical responsibility, a Christian responsibility to help the poor.”

Skerrit is really delusional. Sometime ago he said when poor people come to him with their pegging bowls in hand and God cannot help them, then he must do so personally (using government resources as though they belong to him). Now he talks about a Biblical responsibility to help the poor. Bro, let me give you a sound word of advice; do not use God or the Bible to score cheap political points. If Peter Augustine, Bill Daniel or Roy Hill haven’t told you, the word of God is clear” Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap” Gal. 6:7. You may have gotten away in the past; I’m very sure you’re not going to get away in the future. Now this is a passage which I know has relevance to your actions in the recent past “ But if you will not do so, behold , you have sinned against the Lord, and BE SURE your SIN will find you out” Num. 32:23

Lest we all forget, the PM took care of Lennox Linton when he was in problem in Antigua. So the PM will always help others. The problem is all those hating and saying untruths, slander, lies etc should do their civic duty and help someone in need too! My opinion!

Mr Prime Minister, PLEASE do not confuse your role as the Prime Minister of Dominica and a born again christian. As a born again christian you are expected to help the poor and give back and help as much as people as you possibly can in your walk as a christian. However as a the Prime Minister you are obligated to take care of the people of your country as a whole and not only the people who voted for you, and all others are left to fend for themselves. Think about this you should not be a christian every 5 years and please note that the GOD we serve never sleeps. You seem to think he comes alive every election year and play the christian card. Well for the people who believe and know better, you best come better than that because this is a joke. You may very well want to reconsider this and redefine yourself since there seem to be much confusion going on in your head as to who you are and what is your role as a christian “if you are truly one” and a leader. So far you are neither!

I have done the research and can conclusively diagnose Roosevelt Medad Skerrit as suffering from an acute case of Hugus Chaveitis.

The man is simply a Chavez wanna be and this thing looks aweful on him.

Through my research I was able to discover areas where Hugo Chavez was outrightly rude and disrespectful with individual of different ideological and philosophical views from his. He was basically frustrated with anyone who posed to be a threat or challenge to him.

I saw a video clip where Chaves was being interviewed by a Fox News reporter. When Chaves enquired and found out that the guy represented Fox News as the guys was simply seeking a reaction from him re his friend ahmadinejad, Chaves went ballistic on the guy. He became very verbally abusive and insultive. In his onslaught Chaves refered to the reporter as empty headed, shallow etc. He further went on to make a remark calling the people of Fox News stupid.

It was the same Chaves who rose to address the UN General Assembly a while back. When he got to the podium he made the remark that the Devil was here yesterday and the place still smells sulphur, in an apparent reference to President Bush.

There is good and bad in everyone. There were some commendable traits in Chaves but of all Skerrit saw and have tried to emulate is the bad. Roosevelt Skerrit is obviously obsessed with rum or rum shop and interestingly all things negative, disrespectful and GUTTERISH and is rather condescending with his frontal attacks and tasteless speech.

This guys leaves a bad taste in the mouth of every right thinking Dominica regardless of which side of the political spectrum they belong.

    Poor Skerro, ei juis fou!

Whilst we are on the topic of biblical responsibilities, in the Holy Gospel of Matthew, Jesus told the rich young ruler, “sell that THOU hast and give to the poor.” Note, he did not ask him to take what his father had or what his government had to give to the poor. His giving had to be from his personal possessions to be acceptable to Jesus.

Jesus’ ministry also had a Treasurer/Minister for Finance named Judas Iscariot. Judas knew that devotion to the poor always swells popular support. Under the guise of giving alms to the poor, Judas burnished a political agenda that Jesus did not have in mind.

We made a huge mistake years ago and put them inside there and they fail de poor people of Dominica. What assurance that I have that they’re going to do better this time? Workers desperate for power which the Dominican people wil refuse to give it to them and keep Skerrit inside there to stay for the next 5 to 10 years. Iniquity! Workers! Give me all the dislike, this is what will make my story important in there, and all the workers supporters know that in their heart, what Skerrit doing for Dominica, they can never do.

I am not one of those who will give your comment a dislike. All I can tell you is that you all accused the WORKERS party of tou pas touism. This proves that they were in fact doing work all over the country. Eugenia Charles could not deal with that for she was unfortunately the first Prime Minister to victimize constituencies that did not vote for the Dominica Freedom Party. So to her work being done all over the country was an idea she could not accept. Farther I would be grateful if you could point out any of the politicians in the UWP government of 1995 to 2000 who have amassed personal wealth as your beloved PM and other DLP parl reps. In closing let me point to you some of the world’s worst tyrants honestly thought they were doing the bidding of God. Please let your beloved PM examine himself before it is to late.

Thank you pm for being a good leader!

Being honest can sometimes be difficult because it makes individuals vulnerable. It reveals who we really are and discloses our mistakes, which gives others the opportunity to criticize or reject openly. Honesty develops character and builds credibility and trust, which are the foundation to evoke confidence and respect from those around you, and in the case of political leaders, teammates and constituents.

Compassion is the humane quality of understanding the suffering of others and wanting to do something to alleviate that suffering. While many see compassion as a weakness, true compassion is a characteristic that converts knowledge to wisdom. Good political leaders use compassion to see the needs of those he or she leads and to determine the course of action that would be of greatest benefit to all those involved.

The word integrity is defined as ‘the adherence to moral and ethical principles; the soundness of moral character.’ It is a synonym for honesty and uprightness, and is a vital characteristic for those in political leadership. Political leaders who possess integrity can be trusted because he or she never veers from inner values, even when it might benefit them to do so. A leader must have the trust of followers. This requires the highest standard of integrity

Mr Skerrit we know that you have a difficulty in understanding English, but no one has told you not to help the poor. The concern is how it is done. No matter how much you beg for mercy, the manner in which it is done will not be right. Too many people are neglected in this countryby this programme you are gloating about. You have wrecked havoc with in terms of poverty levels among Dominicans.
DO YOU EXPECT THOSE OF US IN THE VARIOUS communities who know what is obtained in our villages take you seriously?

Old people are easiest set of people to cater and satisfy, once they are comfortable they’re good to go, but what about the youth? My brothers and sisters that are left 4 dead, being unproductive by the roadside? All the PM doing there is attending to the easiest set of people that would result in less hassle and fattening his pockets at the same time. Not seeing his real hardcore supporters are old people and ‘grown’ people? The sad part is the parents pass on there beliefs and ideals to there children and brain wash them, not even giving them a chance to decide what is wrong and right. Every now and then he checking one or two youth and blowing it out of proportion publicizing it, “ohh, I send 7 young people overseas to study!” It’s your job though, that’s what is expected from the PM of a country. I’m not knocking my elders or anything like that, but sometimes they act to bloody incompetent, smh.

See why you break the first rule of mixing religion in politics. There is a welfare department. Your intentions for helping poor is not genuine. And by the way the bible teaches through hard honest work you gain prosperity. Some circumstances need help but the lazy will perrish

You know as a citizen of Dominica and a voter I am really getting annoyed with this back and forth among the politicians and on the use of separate radio stations to push their propaganda. The gov’t side says something on Kairi there is a response on Q95 by the opposition and vice – versa the opposition says some on Q95 and there is a response on Kairi; lets put a stop to all this nonsense and let us come into the public forum to have head on head – tete a tete debates on the issues that matter. That business of hiding behind a radio station will no longer work. Time for public debates among the leaders so that we can begin to separate the men from the boys – we the voter deserve and demand better.

    December 12, 2013

Mr. Prime Minister I am reading this article and am hopeful that your utterances here is a new norm to be statesman like in your discourse. So, in light of this I am hoping that after you read my contribution, and I hope that you do we are going to be more rational in our decision come next election.
To start, I am in total support of any social support program which gives assistance to the poor and needy. I am also in total support of any program be it government or private sector sponsored which seeks to improve the human capital development of any nation. Further, I am in support of any assistance program in which the objective is to create independence rather than dependence.
I have been living outside of Dominica for the last 5 and a half years so I can not comment directly to what is going on there as I am informed through the media. However, before I left Dominica I had first hand knowledge of healthy vivacious young women who were on these assistance programs. I was also knowledgeable of people who were able to pay revenues into the treasury through taxes but who were given duty free concessions because of their party affiliation. No need to be hypocrite here, I know of instances in the UWP government where it happened however, two wrongs do not make it right.
So, in going forward I just want to provide a synopsis of a welfare program misunderstood and misused.
Case-in-point the United States. The welfare program was created to assistance poor persons disenfranchised after slavery and was initially set up to assist mothers who had to stay at home primarily in the south while there husbands were in search of work in the north. The program was first misused when continued assistance were tied to blacks been asked to not have children. After this issue was fixed the program was extended to include other races. However, the program was later tied to politics and now has become so large that it is practically unsustainable. The main reason been that people in these programs were never made to be independent and this has spiraled downwards so badly that you have 3, 4, and 5 generations on welfare. I this what you as a leader wants to be your legacy?
Now, here is a proposal that would make you and any other leader leave a legacy that would survive all of humanity. How about that the young single unemployed and underemployed mothers who receive these assistance be empowered to become independent by undertaking the following.
    1. Unemployed single mothers whose children grades in school drops below a B have their assistance reduced by 10% or 15% since they are at home and should spend time with their children on their school work.
    2. Unemployed persons receiving assistance be provided with some type of skill training and at the successful conclusion of the training an investment fund be made available to start a business.
    3. Instead of having young people care for the elderly also extend this care to families of elderly persons by offering those family assistance such of food baskets and tax incentives.
I could go on and on but this is not a novel but just a humble suggestion to you Mr. PM, your team, The UPW and all civil minded Dominican. No party, no colours.

A declaration to help the poor is what a government is all about, The PM said the right thing, that the role of the government is to be responsible of its people, and that includes fairness, and keeping the rich at bay. The major question though, is the PM enforcing these policies, and why the wide gap between the rich and poor? Remember the PM invoked the principles of the religious doctrines of Christ and the poor. Either we live by this or not. At the end of the day, we (the PM) have to give account of our (HIS) works. We are still playing with the homeless, debating whether to keep them far away from tourists and so forthThe PM must however, show proof that his policies protect, the poor. Words are one thing, actions are another. The problem though, the poor we will always have with us. Therefore, policies must be geared towards protection, education, and encouraging responsibility. Yes, l know we all will not be the best but, let the evidence proved we tried. I am glad that the PM interjected his commitment to the poor, we will pray that he will be successful, and we hope that the poor will strive to build not only themselves but the country that needs everyone in their borders for survival.

Every five years Skerrit thinks he can make a mockery of God. He started with GOD IS GOOD and immediately after election he stops, now he has a biblical responsibility to the poor.
With 120 YES WE CARE beneficiaries, there are over 2000 who are in abject poverty. Skerrit today’s poor are those who we see walking the streets looking good but with children who they cannot feed.

Knowing Our GOD Given Responsibilities are priorities and must be in Order at All Times. For THE LORD Gives Us the Abilities,Resources and Blessings to Fulfill these GOD Given Responsibilities as HE Requires Them.Nothing less will please HIM,therefore no excuse will stand before HIM. We must be occupied with these GOD Given Responsibilities at All Times and Diligently for Any time HE Requires Them We must be ready to present with Great Increase from that which HE Gave in Our Hands. For this is how We Will Please HIM,be entitled to Receive more and Worthy to Be Called HIS GOOD AND FAITHFUL SERVANT.
This assurance Gives Us Pleasure to Serve and to Give Others the Privilege to Serve. For All Who Serves HIM,Work for HIM WILL All Receive HIS Reward. For HE BEING THE EMPLOYER Paid those who worked from the morning the same wages as those who started work only at the eleventh hour. Such Justice and LOVE.For if every man esteem the other higher than him,he will have no difficulty with such Principles, and rather Rejoice that they were employed in time to Work and Help Finish The Work, especially keeping in mind that Many Hands Makes light The Work and are Guaranteed to Have The Reaping of THE REQUIRED HARVEST,Of Which if not All,however Many Desires to Be Part of. For as Many As Receive HIM TO Them Gave HE THE POWER To Be Called The Sons of GOD.

Sir to You Our questions are : Are You carrying out your GOD Given Responsibilities?
Are You Preventing Others from Carrying out Their Work Which is GOD Given Responsibilities?
We All are Called to Examine Our Lives Daily With and By THE HOLY WORD OF GOD not according to others or our own thoughts, nor our own hearts desires.
REMEMBER We are Called to Fear GOD,Yes Reverence HIM For HIS NAME ALONE Is REVEREND,WORSHIP GOD ALONE FOR HE CREATED THE HEAVENS AND THE EARTH AND ALL THE SPRINGS THEREIN .

And the lord said in the book of Dominica verses 2004 -2013 that Roosevelt Skerrit and associates shall do whatever they want and not be questioned because it’s not your damn business!!!!!

Roosevelt Skerrit and associates shall also acquire assets through whatever means they see fit and not be questioned about it because it’s not your damn business!!!!!

Roosevelt Skerrit and associates shall decide who can talk and who can’t and who is fit for political office and who is not …… and you must shut your mouth because it is not your damn business!!!

I say this to you my children and you must listen ………..now go forth and vote for Roosvelt Skerrit and the Rooosevelt Skerrit (not the labour party there is no labour party!!!) even if you are consistently marginalized and future prospects for you children are continuously eroded.

I say this to you because I am the lord your God and gave you commonsense not to think for yourself and take positive decisions for you and your children but to support people blindly …….why because it’s not your damn business !!!!!

Biblical responsibility? Please do not put God in you commess, Mr. If you were dealing with God, you would not be involved in all the lies, victimization, bad talking and bringing down of your own citizens, a practices that you are involved in. Please do not use God in this. If you are, then you are bringing a lot of shame and disrepute on God’s name. Then, the Bible says ‘It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God’. God will judge.
That is what dictators do. They use God’s name to deceive the innocent and poor. When they get into power, the do all kinds of evil against the state and its people and then pose themselves as ‘God’. They want all the worship and kneeling down that belongs to God. Stop fooling the people, PM, just to get back into power. After that, you have nothing to do with God. You show that in your daily behaviour. You have no fear of God and may be just used by some other powers. This time this will not work. Dominica is suffering and needs a revival. The whole creation is calling for a change. We need a better set of people to manage the country and give accountability. Too much of the nation’s money is waste and given for votes when this could have been used to create sustainable jobs for its people. God is not mocked.

You do not believe in God, not the God of brother Abraham, brother Moses, Jesus. Just remember
God nah sleep, all what you are doing and feel nobody can see it,
God nah sleep, when you holy round election, but dirty the rest of the time
He is the Lord of Lords and king of all Kings, he seeth and knoweth all things, all sins, all of the details the small things like a super camera, the film of all films.
I’m talking to you, yes you the wicked, seeking power from the dark place and hiding thinking that he can’t see you but he will hold you when you take your last breadth, cause god nah sleep.

Yes sir, you are right to defend helping the poor and the needy. Some times we have to go beyond the call of duty to achieve what’s good for our people and country.

Go around Dominica and talk to people and you will hear their cries. There are so many people who are needy and do not get the help. The few that are helped only receive it for campaign purposes. If this man had cared about the people, the millions he is giving away only at election times could be used to create sustainable jobs for the poor and needy. If help is given, it should be given to all who rightly deserve it and not just a few. Do you have a conscience? Please go around in your community and see what is happening. Poverty is on the increase over the last fourteen years. Only now, the government is concerned, only now, because elections is coming. It is clear for one to see that the nation’s poor people are neglected.

Well the kind of call of duty you may be referring to is not reflective of God directives.

I know Dominicans are a God fearing nation – but Mr Skerrit let me clarify something for you:

In your personal Life – you have a biblical responsibility to help the poor, in other words sir if you want to take your personal resources and help the poor that is your biblical responsibility – its something you do according to your conscience.

In your capacity as Prime Minister and a member of government – you as part of the government has a constitutional responsibility to look after the elderly and poor of the country.

What you are doing Mr Skerrit is what the tax payers are paying you to do – its your job sir, its not political, its YOUR JOB – you cannot pick and choose whether you do it or not nor should you choose who you do it for.

Biblical responsibility is between you and your conscience – your job is a responsibility to the public, very different things. Keep your relationship with God out of this – it has no business in the public domain.

      December 12, 2013

Your opening statement is so ridiculous. It shows what religion can do to the mind of a person. To say you know that Dominicans are a God fearing nation is very ludicrous.Where do you get that knowing from, worse yet to believe such thing as fearing God.

I would like you to show me where in the constitution that it says The Government has a responsibility to help the elderly, needy, and the Poor.Yes, I believe it should be Government Civic and social responsibly to help the needy in our society, but is not always the case. The Western world Governments and Municipalities with all their wealth have fell short of providing for the lees fortunate.Do you think Dominica has a problem compared to metropolitan cities.

Let us put the Government aside and ask ourselves is it not also our responsibility to help our fellow men,Where are the families of the elderly, their children and Neighbors, what about the religious organizations. Why do we believe that it is the Government responsibility to do everything for us,where is the old saying charity starts at home.

It irritates me when people quote their Bible, words are cheap. You know the Jesus and God referred to all the time, if they would come back as believed It would be a shocking to see how people treat their fellow men.I do not understand why people think that the world or our country with all it’s problems can be solved by Politicians or a Political solution. Do you think Linton and The UWP will do any better regarding this problem. Sooner will a camel pass through a needle’s eye than a great man be ‘discovered’ by an election.

Yes I agree but he also has a bibilical responsibility and moral and ethical responsibility to speak the truth at all times! instead when asked for the true he says to us ‘its none of our “whatever” business, go to Hell’. Now where is his bibilical and christain responsibility that demands that he spreads the gospel and that he wins souls for the Lord instead he seem to find pleasure in condeming and directing people to go to Hell.

These are good Initiatives. However, still more work to do to make Dominica a better place for many to live. For a start, we need to clean up the place. People living in cleaner environments will have improved lives. Clean up Roseau and is surrounds. Help people by fixing up their homes, painting their front, educate them on growing their own produce, and being innovative about doing something for themselves.

    ! Shersker you sound so absurd and fake!

Charitable help from the state should be distributed with a sense of equality based on needs regardless of what political party the recipient supports. STOP the “compassion” nonsense sir. If compassion means me, me , me, me, I, I, I and I first all the time and every time then you are absolutely compassionate. But, we all know that this is the most selfish thing that can be said when one should be explaining the position of a team. Hence, you my dear PM does NOT qualify in anyone’s book as a compassionate person. Also, while you are at it please using the lord’s name in vain for he will strike you down somehow at the least expected time.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the Yes We Care program as long as it is used for the purpose intended. Remember the DLP slogan? “All Shall Eat” has become “Only DLP Supporters Shall Eat” regardless of their needs perceived or otherwise. Lennox is exactly right in what he said. This program has become misguided and used a tool for punishment, retribution and rewards depending on what side of the political spectrum you are standing. But, Change Must Come and the will be sooner rather than later.

    Assertive, NOT Agressive!

So who knows who the lord wants to be in Govt.? The Labour party has been there for three terms. The thing is it all comes down to the people and their choice. The people have consistently chosen the labour party as they continue to grow in popularity and majority. Remember they are 18-3.

Just because the people put them in government doesn’t mean God wants them there. The good old books says righteousness exalteth a nation and let me tell you something under this regime I have seen people whom I have respected in their capacities as pastors, leaders, husbands, doctors BUT not anymore. People are selling their souls to the highest bidder and it’s a damn shame. I will eat and drink all what is given to me but I shall never again vote for this greedy lazy labour party where some shall eat and not all shall eat applies.

@papa This is what Lennox did to you, what have Roosevelt Skerrit do to you? Do you even know him as a person to insinuate that he is satan preaching gospel?

papa ‘between you and me’ Lennox only problem with Skerrit is that Skerrit is a very successful youngman and as a typical Dominican he couldn’t stomach it, that success is too much for him so he concorted all sorts of lies against the youngman, which by the way is not politics it is personal hatred caused by his jealousy, to try to bring him down. The problem is Skerrit never took him on so he repeated it over and over as if its the truth, but that wasn’t enough he attacked every single person he think is associated wth Skerrit.

Now the PM has a responsibility to look after the poor a thing UWP never did whilst in office because their money was meeting their money as Ministers and members of the party!!!

      • Asterix
        December 12, 2013

@Joe: Are you serious? This thing about people being jealous of skerrit is just pure BS and comes from people with warped minds who are clueless of what they even speak. skerrit became successful on the backs of poor people and the state? Where did he get his wealth from, can you tell me, where did those millions come from? Did he have any business before or does he have any now that you know of? He certainly wasn’t wealthy before he became PM. Lennox is a man of honesty and integrity and yes he cannot stomach the fact that skerrit’s wealth came about not through hard work or enterprise but through dishonesty, corruption and the abuse of his office and position. Lennox is not the only one Joe, everyone else with moral fiber and integrity share the same concerns as Lennox. That is why you see so many prifessionals and people of integrity coming forward to put an end to the plundering of the state’s resources by the cabal, the most corrupt government in Dominica to date.

      • Frank Talker
        December 13, 2013

@Joe: Skerrit is a successful young man? Where you get that BS from? Go wash your daylight, boy! There is nothing Skerrit did prior to becoming PM. Everything he has and is, he owes it to the hard workers of Dominica who pay taxes. Even as a Minister of Education his cheques were bouncing at petrol stations. So how de hell you conclude that he is successful?
What I know about Lennox is quite different. He worked his way in life, earning by hard work everything he calls his own. He has a house, a car, a wife and kids. Skerrit had none before entering politics. Joe, go shake your bag where you buy your coals, eh!
