Blackmore puts figure on weekend damage

Flooding in Canefield over the weekend

A total of $191,000 will be needed as government embarks on clean up efforts following heavy rains associated with the remnants of Tropical Depression Seven over the weekend.

The amount was revealed by Public Works Minister Rayburn Blackmoore during an interview with GIS News on Monday.

The damage ranged from rock falls to land slippages and flooding.

According to Blackmoore, some of the areas worst affected were Castle Bruce, Good Hope, Petite Soufriere, San Sauveur, Clarke Hall in Layou Valley, Canefield in the vicinity of the airport, Massacre and Campbell.

The Minister confirmed that the Roseau Valley including communities such as Bath Estate, Elmshall, Trafalgar, and Wotten Waven were also affected.

“Most of the areas affected are the same areas where we have outstanding work to be undertaken. The damage thus far by way of an estimate $110,000,” he said. “In terms of the monies to be spent for the actual cleaning up of the various areas would be $191,000.00.”

The Minister also that disclosed that a $40-million loan has been secured by Government from the Caribbean Development bank (CDB) which will go towards rehabilitation works in communities along the west coast.

Some of those funds will be used to realign the road in Layou which was destroyed by continuous heavy rains.

A new bridge in the Clarke Hall area will also be constructed in the community of Layou, the minister said.

That figure is just an estimate. The real amount may turn out to be near $300 000.
That figure by the way is the amount of money that Jacques Gardahkan is expected to pay per month for his failure to deliver Lot 2 as per the contract. WHERE IS DE MONEY. And why are u not beating ur chest over it like when he was gien 14 days to get new trucks and equipment to guarantee that he would deliver the project on time. When last have u been to the job Mr minister. WHERE ARE THE TRUCKS? And why are the Dominican workers still going thru hell every fortnight to get paid? U are a TRAITOR to our nation.

Where is de money for de Massacre and Mahaut bypass?

Stop treating us voters like fools with ur empty promises.

Get de money from Gardahkan so u can start work in layou.

    NOW!!!!!!!!!!!

I wonder if Mr. Blackmore heard what the Pal rep of St Joseph constituency yesterday evening. After listening to Kelver Darroux yesterday, I was of the impression that Layou was seriously hit by the storm; however, after listening to the man himself, Mr. Blackmore who is the minister responsible, Layou was not even mentioned by Blackmore as one of the badly affected areas. Infact based on what Blackmore said, if Kelver had not spoken about Layou yesterday, one would have not even think Layou was affected, let alone seriously affected according to Kelver. I wonder why? Kelver said people’s homes in Layou got flooded but Blackmore said nothing about that.
Is Kelver using the storm to score political points or is it just confirmation that Blackmore and the DLP continue to neglect the people of the St Joseph constituency?

What is the job of the Physical Planning Division in advising people of the conditions for building?

There was a time if they gave you notice and you did not comply your structure would be demolished.
The people were allowed to build and therefore they should be compensated.

Although i always applaud the works of this Minister must we conclude that the result of all these floods on our communities is a direct result of the poor quality of road rehabilitation going on in Dominica, dont we have local consulting Engineers who can best advise the Government as to how to fix this rather than leavr it up to the Chineese road works people who dont have a clue as to the terrine in the various communities, we may need to have a special budget for Rain/Flood works, what about that Mr Minister

not wanting to diminish the “achievements” of MY government….but jus look at the picture….. a nice “rehabilitated” road under water…. tsk tsk tsk I guess those who went on and on and on about proper drainage weren’t sour grapes after all….

the aim seems to be: get them as poor as possible. which is not funny. they do half work and never really solve any problems. i hope we are looking at the bigger picture. most of the money which they claim will be needed will never really be used. you will have to wait months to be compensated but would have already use your own money to fix the damage. ha ha, no government around the world aint fooling me, all of them under one adgenda.

Stop with this proper drainage ish I live in NYC and every time we have a couple of hours of rain the Bronx River overflows it banks and shuts down the Bronx River Parkway!! A 6 lane stretch of highway, there are something’s that no amount of ‘drainage’ can prevent, once the drain is clogged or the water is coming faster than it can clear the drain there will be overflow/flooding. Jeez people give it a rest already!

how about compensating the families who suffered lost in what i would call a two hour rain fall.i think because of the poor drainage in some areas alot of people lost alot i really think the government should put something in place to start compensating people if not everything but at least half and this i think would go a long way in helping the ones who suffered

well all the money that have been wasted on the airport should have been used to build houses to relocate people in a lot of areas…..just give people nice house in for free….that would have been a much better use of the money
