The books are here! Hands Across the Sea is proud to announce that 8,999 brand new reading books, serving 5,170 children at 23 primary schools, secondary schools, and community libraries have arrived on Dominica. To raise child literacy levels in a sustainable fashion, our CLASS (Caribbean Literacy and School Support) Program utilizes three steps: 1. Send New, Amazing Books; 2. Create/Rejuvenate Lending Libraries; and 3. Sustain the Literacy Gains. On Dominica, Celia Sorhaindo, works with each school to guide and support efforts in creating and maintaining effective school libraries.

Hands across the Sea thanks our Dominica partners in child literacy, the Ministry of Education, and the Lions Club, for their support and assistance with this endeavor.

We also sincerely thank the generous Dominica funders who showed that they believe in the power of reading and literacy, and in giving every child on Dominica access to top-quality, exciting, relevant books. Dominica supporters and their adopted schools include: Beverly Foundation/Rosalie Bay Resort & Spa (Christian Union Primary School, Dominica SDA Secondary School, Goodwill Primary School, Pierre Charles Secondary School, Roseau Primary School, Sineku Tunubuku Reference Library, St. Mary’s Academy, and St. Mary’s Primary School); the Sandals Foundation (Belles Primary School, Concord Primary School, and Newtown Primary School); Scotiabank Bright Future (Dominica Grammar School and St. Johns RC Primary School); and Expedia Canada (Massacre-Canefield Primary School).

Hands also salutes the world-class publishers included in our 2016-2017 Hands Wish Lists shipment to Dominica: Abrams-Amulet, Annick Press, Campanita Books, Capstone Publishers, Caribbean Reads, DK Publishing, Hachette Book Group, HeyDay, High Interest Publishing, Lee & Low Books, Macmillan Education, Papilotte Press, Penguin Books, Random House, Rosetta Press, Scholastic, Tiny Island Press, Townsend Press, and World Book.

What about ordering BIBLES to teach the children to read the word and apply it to their hearts? Soo many Biblical literature are out there for children right now. We need the Bible to be taught in our schools.
