BUSINESS BYTE: A new Carnival product launched

In the two weeks build up to Carnival, much to the enjoyment of visitors, locals and shoppers, a new Pre-Carnival Product was added to Dominica’s Carnival, in the City of Roseau.“The Prevo Cinemall’s Mas in the City.”

The Prevo Cinemall’s “Mas in the City” brought into Roseau the main Cultural Pillars of Dominica’s Carnival: -Steel pan, Jing ping, Sensay, Kalinago Rhythms & Haitian Rara.

According to Ms Vanessa Prevost, General Manager of The Prevo Cinemall, “By bringing the Traditional Mas in the City, the businesses at The Prevo Cinemall which include The Food Court with several different restaurants, a supermarket, a department store, a modern cinema, and the other several small businesses, are playing a positive role in reviving Dominica’s Traditional Carnival”.

Mark Your Calendar

“Plans are already on the way for next year”, continued Ms. Prevost. “Next year and in the years ahead, visitors, locals and shoppers can mark their calendars, and look forward to again jumpstart and rev up their Carnival in an even more spicy Prevo Cinemall Mas in the City, during the weeks before the big day.”

Prevo Cinemall Ideal Location

Says Ms. Prevost, “because The Prevo Cinemall building is recessed several feet inwards from the sidewalk, and the area is properly paved with bricks, it lends itself to the hosting of pre-carnival and other Cultural performances. Like Steelpan in Trinidad, Traditional Mas captures the creativity of our ancestors who with little or no money, created a spectacular way of enjoying themselves.”

Passing on Tradition to Youth

Continued Ms. Prevost, “In addition to getting them in the Carnival mood, bringing Traditional Mas to the City early, in our opinion is an important step in passing on the Tradition to our youth, and stimulating their creative talent to keep the Traditional Mas alive.”

The Bamboo Ajoupa

“These sidewalk performances can be further enhanced by using the paved Prevo Cinemall Courtyard where we have also built a traditional bamboo roofed Ajoupa. The Bamboo Ajoupa is not just for Carnival,” says Ms Prevost. “During the year, The Courtyard with its Bamboo Ajoupa facility will also be made available to schools and youth groups to display their musical and cultural talents,”

This year’s Prevo Cinemall Mas in the City performances were held on the two consecutive Saturdays leading up to Carnival – The Marigot Jing ping band Sugar Fire performed on Saturday 3rd February and Mas in the City climaxed with a fusion of Kalinago Rhythms, Senjoe Sensay and Haitian band Chu Chu Rara on Saturday 10th February. Two weeks before this, on Saturday January 20 th Pan in The City organized by the Cultural Division took place on the sidewalk in front of The Prevo Cinemall.

The businesses at The Prevo Cinemall wish to express their appreciation and thanks to all the performers, DNO, Emo News and all the other media houses, as well as the many patrons who were taking videos and streaming the events on their Facebook pages.
