Bitcoin event in Dominica cancelled

bitcoinA virtual currency project slated to take place in Dominica next month has been cancelled.

The project, Let The Bit Drop, was expected to take place on the island on March 14, 2015.

It was expected to introduce the digital currency, Bitcoin, and distribute it to Dominicans on a large scale, organizers had said.

But all that is history now.

“It is with deep regret that we announce the cancellation of the Let The Bit Drop project,” Freya Stevens, Marketing Specialist at Coinapult, one of the leading organizers of the event, told DNO via email.

She explained that the event was scrapped because “of the recent reversal of country-specific logistical decisions.”

She stated the passion for the project still exists and “we hope that we will be able to re-instate this pioneering project in the future.”

“We have taken every effort to ensure all participants, attendees, and organizers have been notified accordingly, and we have also initiated the refund process for all our amazing supporters who made donations for the event,” Stevens stated.

She noted that the event was conceived to allow the implementation of Bitcoin and allow “participation and engagement from all levels of the community – from individual consumers to small businesses and government entities.”

“The event was designed to demonstrate the ability of Bitcoin to bring financial tools and services to the under-banked, as well as provide an economic boost to a single country,” Steven stated.

CEO of Coinapult, Ira Miller, told website, CoinDesk that negotiations for the event broke down when its hosts in Dominica did not provide promised support.

“This is particularly sad, as a number of alternative Caribbean venues were available, had we known Dominica would not follow through,” he said.

Project manager Sarah Blincoe suggested that the Dominica government never met certain project deliverables, such as issuing a press release for the event. Further, she indicated an election cycle on the island nation complicated matters, according to CoinDesk.

Bitcoin is a digital currency, which according to CNN Money, was created in 2009 by an unknown person using the alias Satoshi Nakamoto.

“Transactions are made with no middle men – meaning, no banks! There are no transaction fees and no need to give your real name. More merchants are beginning to accept them: You can buy web hosting services, pizza or even manicures,” CNN Money said.

Since it was announced, the event had sparked controversy in Dominica. Many were concerned over the unregulated nature of Bitcoin. Others wondered why the government was silent over the entire matter although organizers of the event had named Dr. Kenneth Darroux, as the main local contact.

After the announcement of the event was made public, DNO made numerous attempts to interview Darroux and on one occasion he only said he would comment “at an appropriate time.”

Bitcoin is not a scam, but it is true that it promises more than it can deliver. This is not usually due to liars, but due to ignorant people promoting it who do not know it’s weaknesses.

You can pay hitmen and drug dealers with dollars… Been happening for centuries.

Bitcoin’s flaws have been seen by better people. There is no need for an “event” or an “organization.” You can use other cryptocurrencies if you feel like it. And if you understood the truth, you would.

But, seeing so many Dominicans fall for lies about Bitcoin makes it unlikely that these lies can be undone and see the way to better projects led by better people… Sad.

Angelo clearly was unaware that coinapauat and others are legitimate businesses which attempted to introduce a legitimate existing business called BITCOIN ,,NOW ACCEPTED WORLDWIDE and of which like all currencies will have people attempting fraudulent use .
The point is the GOVERNMENT OF DOMINICA BEING IN A JOINT CENTRAL BANK -EASTERN CARIBBEAN Authority could not and did not accept the BIT DROP PROMOTION ..except if cleared by all OECS states ..THE PM WAS…

Bitcoin apparently seem to have been misunderstood .the fact of it being used by persons who are also criminal is similar to persons using the US DOLLAR which are also used by criminals.STOCK EXCHANGE ETC.
BITCOIN ON THE 3OTH OF JANUARY WAS APPROVED BY THE ITALIAN GOVERNMENT FOR USE AS CRYPTO CURRENCY..ITALY IMPOSED A 20%TAX LEVY ON MONEY EXCHANGE COMPANIES LIKE WESTERN UNION ..NONE ON BITCOIN
MICROSOFT – -POSSIBLY THE WORLDS LEADING BUSINESS OF THIS AGE RECENTLY ,ACCEPTED BITCOIN and is actively partnering with it .
THE PRIME MINISTER NEVER indicated that he accepted the BITCOIN for the obvious reason that as member of the OECS ECONOMIC UNION AND A MEMBER OF THE EASTERN CARIBBEAN CURRENCY AUTHORITY HE HAS TO GET UNILATERAL AGREEMENTS.
This matter was never endorsed because of this condition.I NOTE THE OJ DOLLAR REFERENCE..Again that was a brilliant effort at food for work sef help being paid by foods stamp ..I have a copy and it says “NOT TO BE USED EXCEPT FOR RELIEF…

It is truly amazing how very scant our knowledge of the trends of this world is, as a people. The comments made are so immature and unread and somehow seeks to attack the PRIME Minister who never gave any indications that .Dominica could ACCEPT BITCOIN UNILATERALLY a .Dominca is a member of THE EASTERN CARIBBEAN CURRENCY AUTHORITY and a member of the ECONOMIC UNION .
Clearly the PM and Minster of finance would seek coordination in that regard.
MICROSOFT RECENTLY ENDORSED BIT COIN as a virtual crypto currency..ITALY ON THE 30TH OF JANUARY authorized the USE OF BITCOIN as a money exchange crypto currency ….indeed a 20%tax
was levied on money gram and western union etc none on BITCOIN.
BIT COIN like the Internet, has no boundary management by the MONEY CONTROL DICTATORIAL ROLE WHICH MAKES THE SUPER RICH RICH RICHER !!

Well, Italy is the birthplace of the Maffia and the inventors of true “double book keeping”, so that speaks for itself. As for the P.M.’s innocence in all this that is simply laughable. Of course he would have to clear that with the authority that controls our E.C. $. and that is why he should not have allowed his front man Dr. Darroux to have that published meeting with the bitcoin man from Panama before checking things with Dr. Venner. If he truly didn’t know anything about Dr. Darroux meeting he should have sacked him by now or at least made a public statement, he is the Min. of Finance and P.M. after all! so I don’t believe that argument at all.
I don’t care what Microsoft say, they are not our elected representatives. Bill Gates is not the President of the world. I’m old fashioned and stick with my dollar where I can trace it.

Silence is consent. Someone had to authorize the drop. We heard from bitcoin and did not hear from the government. Hence, people are left to speculate. The relevant authority could have informed the public. It is thier duty to communicate with people on such occasions. Let the government explain to people.

If Dominica were a real country the following would happen:
    1. The government would sue Bitcoin for dragging the name of Dominica and the government into something they knew nothing about ( I say nothing about because the government has never confirmed or denied anything).
2.The government would sue Bitcoin for cancelling an agreement. If India could sue WI for $40 million for breaking contract, then we could get a lot from Bitcoin for cancelling on us.
3.Based on statements made by Bitcoin, the government knew plenty but failed to act. Therefore Bitcoin should sue the government for not keeping their word
    4. The people of Dominica would demand that Mr. Skerrit and the DLP administration resign their positions forthwith, for failing to speak the truth about bitcoin.

But Dominica is not a real country and therefore Skerrit and the DLP continue to operate in the dark and all their deeds are FULL of darkness. We will get to hear more soon.

:) When I posted negative comments on Bitcoin last year my comments were trashed, even by Miller. I would encourage readers to refer to Jeremy Allaire website and his start up “Circle International Financial” which has pulled in US$26 million in Venture capital. The promoters are not telling us the truth.
Bitcoin bad track record is forcing it to become a money transfer system like Western Union or Citigroup. The value of Bitcoin has fallen more than 75%.

      February 11, 2015

If our government can’t tell us the truth why you expect the promoters to be truthful.
you Zapata criticize your party. Hmmmm. You are not that developed.
Do you know that from inception Bitcoin had been volatile and it had been so when your labor party crooked politicians decided to flirt with Bitcoin Jesus.

        February 11, 2015

It is not a question of criticizing political parties. I was taught to believe that only governments can issue currency through their central banks with some kind of reserve to back up the amount issued.
During world war 2, Germany tried to depart from this practice until cigarettes became more valuable than their currency.

  24. Lone Ranger
    February 11, 2015

So we now know that the real reason for the cancellation was the arrest of the CEO of Bitcoin Exchange yesterday in New York on charges of money laundering, the main fear that many in Dominica harbored about the little understood bitcoin business.
It was obvious that the promoters wished to used the island as a laboratory for a invention that is shaky at best, given the wild fluctuation of the price of bicoins in the market.
But the real cause of concern was that the Skerrit government decided to jump in bed with shady characters who are now facing criminal charges in the US.
This follows a familiar pattern: Either out of naivete or incompetence, our government squanders its credibility on characters of unsavory repute.
Perhaps this may be a case of birds of a feather flocking together. Either way it is extremely embarrassing to self respecting Dominicans, especially those who are in contact with the international community.

    February 11, 2015

For the past decade, in particular, the patriots of Dominica have been exposing, informing, educating, with irrefutable evidence and facts re. the Big Time CORRUPTION that has engulfed our country.

The corruption has become contagious. Imagaine a Cuban graduate and medical doctor found himself trapped in that? Was the man of medicine the decoy? The Minister of Finance says nothing? Dr. Darroux says nothing?

The damage again has been done. Dominica on the world map again for rubbing shoulders with all kinds of questionable folks.

Secret passport sales, diplomatic ones at that. crooks and criminals in possession of our passports. Thanks to that DLP Gov’t again another scandal.

BITCOIN? No financial regulation? Money laundering? BITCOIN officials charged in US for corrupt acts, facing jail?

Many more secret scandals to be unravelled. Dominica sold and is in a mess. The ILLUMINATI keeps an entire nation in darkness. Fooled again…

Sometimes I get a headache is trying to understand why the people of Dominica love Skeritt and the DLP. It cannot be because of the many gifts like the red clinic, corruption, free housing, free pit toilet, lies, his good looks or dimples. The man is in his forties with retreading hair at the front of his head. Many former Governments have done as much or more, therefore, what is the attraction, what is he doing right, why are Dominicans so happy with the Skeritt led administration. Someone told me, maybe, it is because of his association with dictators, crooks, the holy cross or seas. Maybe, it is because of involvement with certain members of the legal fraternity or maybe, it is his alleged involvement with devilish worship. . Quite frankly, I really don’t know, do you.

    February 11, 2015

The REAL reason for the cancellation was the discovery and exposure of the nefarious plans the project had in mind. Hopefully, the stain on Dominica’s DLP government can be erased in time.

    • February 11, 2015

This has nothing to do with the DLP either way. The organisers of this event didn’t do their homework about Dominica before selecting the country, they were clumsy in their approach to rolling out information to the Dominican people, they were surprised when there was then an inevitable backlash from people who have no idea who the organisers were or what they were planning, they devoted no time or energy to making this happen, and now they’ve realised how many unrecoverable mistakes they’ve made and are quitting while they’re behind.

I agree it was unfortunate that no one in government would comment on this when it was first announced, but that doesn’t mean that it not happening is the DLP’s fault. It’s quite squarely the fault of foreign organisers who simply weren’t very well organised.

      • But wait
        February 11, 2015

No one is blaming the DLP for the event’s cancellation. EVERYONE recognizes that the government led by the DLP, should have been open about the event when their citizens have been asking for almost a year now. We were not addressed about the intention, plans, implementation (or lack thereof) or cancellation of this event.

If the Bitcoin folks did not do their own marketing, no one in Dominica would know anything was ever planned. So, this begs the questions: is this standard DLP protocol? how many other “events” are they planning with our tax dollars without our knowledge? are we allowed to ask questions AND get answers about such initiatives, or is Blackmoore going to curtail questioning of ministers, next??

One of the key reasons why doing business in Dominica is so frustrating, is because we accept inferiority and excuse away the responsibilities of those who should exemplify professionalism. Don’t excuse the DLP on this. They were wrong and they should be held…

We have one of the highest tax rates in Dominica, but can’t even ask a question of our government? We must rely on international media to know what the hec is going on by those we pay?! Everything in Dominica is on a ‘need to know basis’. This has been going on since this wicked government came in office. Skerrit only shares info with the nation that is more or less irrelevant anything else he hides. But hey ho we have been tolerating it for 15 years now, so no reason for Skerrit to stop his antics. Poor Dominica…

    So it was scrapped………go figure!
Freya Stevens :”recent reversal of country-specific logistical decisions”???
Ira Miller CEO of COINAPULT :”negotiations for the event broke down when it’s hosts in Dominica did not provide promised support?
what was that support to be like?
Sara Blincoe: “the Government never met certain project deliverables such as issuing a press release”
“election cycle on the island nation complicated matters”
De only people we have never heard a word from concerning this is our leaders in Government.
Skerrit himself said we should ask questions of our representatives

Boy me and my 2 cents education can figure out a BOBOL when i see one.
Mr Darroux when will be de appropriate time to officially inform de Nation?

Only crooks and thieves likes the dark and loves to hide. Bitcoin associate will be spending life in prison. I will say again nothing is free and someone is always tryin to gain; an edge, advantage, profit, a vote, your loyalty, your resources, your trust, your love, and the list goes on.
To gain prosperity in the Caribbean Businesses must find a way for working people to be able to buy shares so they can invest, expand, and grow and shareholders. In turn can benefit. Social security is currently unsustainable and the working class need other means of building wealth.
Lets focus on realistic sustainable ideas and programs instead of some fad like bitcoins And our wealfare economics.

If a contract has been broken, Bitcoin should sue the contracted parties. Another example of how the Government of Dominica treats its citizens. Everyone knows of the Government involvement and endorsement of this project but they, the Government, are yet to inform citizens. I am not making any judgement as to whether this project is a good or bad idea, it may well be good for us, but how can the Government treat the country this way, no consultation, no discussion, no debate, no comments? And my people, including some educated ones with PhD’s believe this is all well and good. This is not how a Government treats the citizens of a country, it is wrong! And this, “Project manager Sarah Blincoe suggested that the Dominica government never met certain project deliverables, such as issuing a press release for the event.” Sorry Sarah, the international community now learning what Dominicans have been experiencing from the government of Dominica, and the usual suspects will defend…

For those of you who voted Labour based on the promised Bit Drop, mentioned during the recent election campaign, I say sorry to you but this is not how and why you should elect a government. There is the lottery for that!

Not surprising really. Only last week wednesday (4 Feb.) 30 year. old Ross Ulbrichts from California was convicted on seven charges by a court in New York, including money laundering and drug trafficking using bitcoin. The FBI also found a completed application form for Dominican citizenship on his computer, with details of the Dominica based processing agent.

Many supporters of the Skeritt led administration like to criticize Mr. Angelo Alleyne when he brings out the truth on radio. The cancellation of the Bit Drop Project , is as a result of real investigative journalism, not like the back of the hand Kamala journalism. I support this move by the Government, because had this project come to the shores of Dominica, it would certainly bring about the downfall of Skeritt, once and for all. Great job Mr. Alleyne, you are the man of the year, you have just saved Dominica from ruin.

Imagine a currency system that was created by a person who is afraid to declare who he is, Yet this present Labour party government was prepared to sacrifice the financial stability of this ‘innocent’ county on this major scam.

If it was not for vigilance and advocacy of the opposition and Q95 commenters, then Dominicans would have woken up one morning to be forever doomed to this self inflicted financial albatross.

If this thing was so good, Dominica would have been the last place they would have volunteered to use as their guinea pig.. What citizens must ask themselves is what about the many otherdubious schemes which are still under cover and have serious ramifications for the future of this naive nation.

Thank Angelo for exposing this scam so extensively and thank the P.M. for changing his mind on this before it is too late. In the present climate that would be negative publicity for Dominica. Thank God above all.
