Brizee’s Mart to close down October 1

Brizee's Mart
Brizee’s Mart

Shoppers who frequented Brizee’s Mart, a supermarket on the island, will have to re-route their business to another in a few week’s time.

A newspaper announcement has confirmed what many have been talking about, Brizee’s Mart is closing down.

“O.D Brisbane and Sons (Dominica) Ltd the company that brought you Brizee’s Mart, wishes to advise its customers and the general public that its supermarket Brizee’s Mart will cease operations as of October 1, 2013,” the announcement said.

It continued: “Please note that the Wholesale/ Distribution department will continue to operate and serve from the same location in Canefield”.

When contacted the CEO of the company, Jerry Brisbane, said he wished to remain silent on the issue, but will speak out some time in ‘the near future.’

In recent times, word on the ground was that Brizee’s Mart was having serious internal problems, and as a result staff in all departments was dismissed.

Brizee’s Mart was operated by the parent company O.D. Brisbane and Sons (Dominica) Ltd.

The supermarket has become known for its ice-cream, children’s playground and of late, the Brizee’s Flea Market

Sometimes I really do not understand our PEOPLE!!!

Why should business people not get involved in politics. The policies and decisions made by every government directly affect them. Should they just stay silent. Now when they do stay silent, should they also not give donations towards carnival, creole festival, needy persons, sports and education groups. We need to start taking politics on another level…(EDUCATION AND DISCUSSION) not on party colors.

I am proud of Mr. Brisbane for standing up for what he believes in. No matter what party color you are (HE WAS RIGHT!!!!) there are so many issues which need to be dealt with. There are so many people needing jobs and a better way of life. Lets not be silly, lets be open and discuss the issues.

The government or no one should rejoice in the company’s’ downfall, because this shows a BAD REPORT FOR THE GOVERNMENT!!! (let a few more business go down and then, lets see what government will do)

When someone came to me with a sponsor sheet for funeral expenses. I was shocked!!! Let listen to what every representative have to offer lets engage them…. LETS MOVE OUR POLITICS TO A DIFFERENT LEVEL FOR OUR CHILDREN!!!!!!!!!

Jerry wanted the international community to boycott Dominica so he could have his wishes. Now don’t you think if his wishes was realized both Dominica and his supermarket would be shut dowwn

    • Wow!
      September 18, 2013

Your statements are irresponsible. Jerry’s letters were published in the print media and on DNO and it was proven that these letters did not ask anyone to boycott Dominica. All those who could read for themselves saw firsthand the contents of the letters.

Also, it would have been foolhardy for him to make that request as to do so would have had a negative impact on his family investments on the island.

Do you know that after all this, Government went on to enact new laws governing public procurement to prevent fraud on public projects???

You see, when in business you are to be very cautious. Everyone is entitled to their political ideology, however, attempting to impose your beliefs on others can be very detrimental. As a business owner, one needs to generate as much revenue as possible, there is no DLP and UWP dollars, a business owner should never be the mouthpiece of any party, especially the minority party. Mr. Brisbane made some very bad choices and so he is suffering the consequences, stop the blame game. The finger must be pointed at Jerry.

DEAR DC YOU DOMINICANS LOVE TO PUT THINGS IN A WAY JUST TO SUIT YOU GUYS. JERRY CONCERN WAS ABOUT THE WALL BEING BUILT AT THE UNIVERSITY. WAS HE WRONG FOR SAYING WHAT HE OBSERVED AND AS A MATTER OF FACT WHEN THE GOVERNMENT REALIZE THAT HE WAS RIGHT THE NEXT DAY THEY WERE THERE DOING REMEDIAL WORK. THIS MAN TO ME SHOULD BE PRAISED FOR ACTUALLY ALLOWING US TO GET OUR MONIES WORTH. FINALLY WHEN HE WROTE TO TELL THE FINANCIAL DONORS TO ENSURE THAT THEIR MONIES ARE WELL SPENT IN DOMINICA SINCE THEIR SEEMS TO BE NO QUALITY CONTROL AND ACCOUNTABILITY IS THERE SOMETHING WRONG WITH THAT? WOULD YOU NOT WANT TO KNOW THAT IF YOU GIVE SOMEBODY MONEY THAT IT IS WELL SPENT? JERRY NEVER AND I REPEAT JERRY NEVER SAID TO ANY AGENCY DO NOT ASSIST GOVERNMENT AND IF YOU CAN PROVE THAT STATEMENT WRONG DISPLAY IT. SADLY HOW CAN A MINISTER SAY AND TELL ALL DOMINICANS TO BOYCOTT HIS BUSINESS? IS THAT HOW WE COME WHEN PEOPLE HAVE DIFFERENT VIEWS? FINALLY DO YOU THINK IS THE GOVERNMENT THAT CAUSED THE CLOSER OR SIMPLY THE ECONOMY IS HARD UNDER THIS ADMINISTRATION? JUDGE FOR YOURSELF!!!!!!!!!!!

It is sad day indeed. My kids and I will miss Brizee during the Christmas vacation when we come home from the cold. We will miss the shopping, the ice cream, the playground, the food, the live Christmas music (Caroling)…….. :(

It was unfortunate that a boycott was called on a LOCAL establishment while Roseau became a “LUCKY BRAND” mini Chinatown. Loss of jobs results in loss of wages, loss of disposable incomes, loss of taxable income. It is a negative domino effect to the neighbourhood where the unemployed resides.

God bless the most beautiful island on earth and its people.

      September 18, 2013

It is illadvised for the governement to call for its supporters to boycott a local business. But Jerry should have been taking care of his business instead of spending all that time fighting Skerrit. He is a businessman and he should have been spending his time trying to grow his business.

    September 18, 2013

We blame this one on Hurricane Skerrit and Savrin (SS). Skerrit is hopeful and boastful of getting 500 hundred new jobs but is not concerned of the few we already have. From childhood my dad always told me that a “Bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.” All Mr. Brisbane did was exercise his democratic right to protest their unrighteous deed and Savrin, who was not elected by the people, called on all Dominicans to Boycott the man’s supermarket. The sad thing about it is, neither PM Skerrit, nor DLP president Saint Jean, or PRO of the DLP condemned Savrin’s call making them all in agreement and since they were all reelected uncontested, makes all DLP responsible.
Savrin will be retiring soon and the few tax payers will have to pay him a salary. I wonder where we will get money to pay them when they causing more people to be without a job. Lord hear us and HELP US NOW LORD!

Most posters here are playing the political card. But a business requires hands on attention. When management of a super market goes off into the bush behind Melville Hall airport for most of the week and leaves his business in the hands of others; When management pays more attention to political hang ups and pours his personal income into political campaigning; when another more businesslike, even if smaller, supermarket opens in the same community (Canefield)and serves its customers 7-11, what do you expect! Thats heavy competition in the same zone. Compare this closure to HHV Whitchurch (expansion at Portsmouth) and you get the picture.

How does a Government wish to attract foreign investors when Ministers of Government can call for people to boycott a business which will only lead to its demise? Why would any investor foreign or local looking at this situation invest their money in Dominica to create jobs for Dominicans at the risk of Government causing your business to fail? Dominica gets a blow again while Labour power continue its destructive reign! ‘Plus tard plus twist!”

I will hasten to say though that this is an indictment against this administration as business and closing in droves under their watch. Shame Shame Shame and allu will pay the tears of those affected will resonate with the father and we know well that he pities the poor and hears the cry of the needy so woe be unto those that calculated and orchestrated the closure of this business.

Jerry Brisbane new what he was getting into. The minister did not have to say that. Jerry by his action begged for the bad will of over 50% of his customers.

so here is what i see here . Its all negative about brizzy or skerrit. Please stop.
The big picture here is that the lower class and middle class people lost their way of life in a very difficult country . Some of them may leave the country with an already stuggling population (rules of economic – supply and demand /nobody there to buy those goods…i travel through the country side and all i see is little rum shop and abandoned properties and bush where there were once gardens and other economic activity

The Dominican economy can no longer sustain this businesses like many over that last decade that have closed and are closing everyday in dominica . lets hope that the government NOT skerrit employed by the people for ALL the people of dominica can realize the trends here and whats coming and develop new policies that are un biassed to trigger economic growth and allow investors to take interest in our country and nationals to feel that they can actualy return to dominica or remain in the country and obtain some form of dignified employement and living.we are losing good people and good things lets think possitively to stop the bleeding..

Dominicans, look at it this way. The country is no different than a corporation, only on a larger scale. It belongs to no one but everyone is an owner. The attitudes toward each other is destroying the corporation; hence, profitability is minimal.

The land is divided; yet, a house divided cannot stand. Whenever the red man is in charge, the blue people work continuously against him whether he is doing something good or bad. When the blue man is in charge, the red folks do the same and none consider that he is destroying the very land he is fighting to save.

So how to you expect the corporation to be fruitful? How do you expect great results? It is time people start working together for the betterment of the country, instead of playing go fish with red and blue cards. Too much hatred among the people. Sad, but true!

I would hate to think that you are suggesting that an individual loses their democratic right to freedom of expression because they own a business. Please tell me this is not what you are alluding to. If it is this would indeed be a sad day for our country.

      • September 18, 2013

        Curious.

Hello and good afternoon. I am not saying that any of our citizens should lose their freedom of speech but if a politician say something then our citizens can hold him or her responsible at the ballot box. Now a business person is there to provide a service and make a profit but if that business person is blatantly taking sides then they are damaging their business because some consumers will hold that against them and refused to frequent their business.

How can a government of the people ,for the people and by the people call for the boycott of a legitimate business enterprise. These people are crazy!.Considering that there is an unemployment problem in the country plus the tax revenue which will be foregone, the loss of any business cannot be something to be celebrated.
This is a new low for the country.Even if foreign businesses come to the Dominican shores they do not last very long, plus they usually require tax breaks and other concessions which means the treasury will not be benefiting. In addition the profits of these companies and their principals are sent overseas to be reinvested not for the benefit of the average Dominican.
It is clear to me that we need a new model for governance and leadership in Dominica.Heaven help us all because the blind are leading the blind and the next level is sooo far away.

Dominica is a free and democratic society with freedom of speech. The businessman has every right to voice openly his political persuasion. That is his democratic right. I am sad to see a business go down and mortified that a politician and one of our leaders will tell the general public to boycott a businessman because he takes a stand and chooses to call out whats he sees as wrongs in our society.

And where people would get the money to shop if the grants and loans stopped coming to Dominica and government could not provide the jobs for the people to work and earn money to shop at that place. You not seeing that side of it, then.

That State Palace nice man. Something Dominicans can be proud of.

  62. September 17, 2013

Businesses are closing everywhere but Dominicans behave as if this is a strange phenomenon. Not to mention someone MUST be blamed for it and it has to be political. Dominicans please grow up and stop expecting every leader to take office with a magic wand or a Gennie lamp. Everyone is looking for an Aladdin experience based on the false promises from these human beings. Promises are the main ingredients of a political pie except that it is only artificial. You will never taste (experience) the real thing.

EVERY political leader (whether red or blue, whether in Dominica or elsewhere) comes impregnated with promises but never gives birth. Self-magnification aborts these promises. Stop trusting in mere human beings who do not even know what the next minute holds. Instead you should trust in Daddy God and intercede for your country and your leader asking for wisdom, regardless of who is in office.

Worship and prayer are what you should concentrate on. This is why the Lord has said, “If my people who are called by my name humble themselves and pray and turn from their wicked ways, I will heal their land.” He will also heal their hearts.

Sad… Very sad… for not only the employees but for the country
that’s 500 people that are now hungry competing for the little jobs the country has left and 500 less taxpayers to help the economy… Red Blue or Green we all need to do something to stem the tide because closing businesses is bad for Dominica

They do not know what really transpired which caused him to close down his business but they are quick to blame others for it. This makes no sense. You know, negative people turn me off. I am happy I do not know them, and am not their friends, I hope not my relatives. If per chance the latter, are a few, I would be extremely disappointed in them for they are one-sided and think one-sidedly. Do they ever think further?

      September 18, 2013

When one door closes the other one opens. To further state, “Too often we only see the door that is closed and not the one that is opened” and missed a great opportunity.
The saying, “Sometimes it is a blessing in disguise.” Humanity never looks at it that way but God wants us to look at it in this manner.
Another saying: “When God closes a door, He opens a window.” Whichever manner we look at it, we must always be positive for life has to go on and it will. Therefore they must prod on. Many people worldwide have lost jobs and have done that. Those who lost their jobs at Brizee’s Mart are not alone.
