Consultation set to discuss Draft Maintenance Bill

consultationA one-day Consultation to discuss another OECS Draft Family Model Bill will take place on Tuesday July 5th, 2016 at the Public Service Union Conference Room from 9: 00 am.

This time, stakeholders will come together to review the Draft Maintenance Bill.

A Consultation has already been held where discussion took place on the Child Justice Bill, Children (Care and Adoption) Bill, Status of Children Bill and Domestic Violence Bill.

This OECS harmonized Bill relates to the Maintenance of children and procedures which the Court could adopt when making Maintenance Orders.

The present Maintenance Act provides for the Maintenance of certain classes of persons including children and adults. The present Bill is specific to children and proposes that each parent has an obligation to provide reasonably for the maintenance of children.

A local Drafter will make presentations on both the present Maintenance Act and the proposed Bill. Suggestions will be received for possible changes to the Draft.

The Consultation is a coming together of policy makers, parents, Magistrates, Social workers, Police Officers among other invitees.

Consultation on the OECS Draft Family Model Bills is part of the process leading to the enactment of the Family Bills.
