Digicel asks regulator to investigate LIME

digicelDigicel on Friday asked the National Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (NTRC) to launch an investigation into LIME’s call handling – which results in some consumers being unfairly charged.

In November 2013, Digicel detected unusual calling patterns to LIME numbers across 12 of LIME’s Caribbean markets and launched an investigation which discovered that consumers may be improperly charged for calls to certain LIME numbers.

Despite persistent efforts to work with LIME to rectify the situation and multiple assurances from LIME that the situation has been corrected, Digicel continues to find intermittent examples of the issue continuing in various LIME markets in the Caribbean. As such, Digicel has lost confidence in LIME’s assurances that the issue has been resolved and customer’s credit is no longer being taken in error.

As such, in order to protect the rights and purse strings of mobile customers, Digicel is now turning to the regulator and requesting that it launch an investigation into the matter and move to ensure the problem is solved and bring an end to the improper charging for calls to certain LIME numbers. Further, Digicel is requesting that the regulator ensure a mechanism is established whereby LIME is required to compensate consumers that have been affected by LIME.

Commenting on the decision to ask the regulator to intervene, Digicel Dominica CEO, Richard Stanton, said; “As a customer champion, we are duty bound to ensure that the rights of consumers are protected. We have tried over the course of many months to work with LIME to rectify this issue, but our requests have largely fallen on deaf ears. As such, we have no other choice but to ask the regulator to intervene as quickly as possible so that we can ensure that customers’ credit is safe.”

I have just changed my account to top up. I was on a plan with LIME to have 300 minutes free a month. Well, every month I had a bill of over 100 EC dollars! I never used the telephone very much so was really bothered. The last bill I had was for 336 EC and made charges to me for phoning Canada!!! I use SKYPE to phone other countries! I now am paying top up and my bill for the last 2 months has been 60 EC dollars. Yes, I definitely think there is a problem. I did report it to LIME but so far have had nothing back!

LIME or Cable and Wireless or whatever they call their selves have been robbing the Caribbean Dry with exorbitant rates……While their services and really good They are overly expensive. I am happy that Digicel and stayed and Fought head to head with LIME because i don’t think they would never lower their rates…..even today their rates are still way more expensive……the lowest internet package of 2MB costs 130 xcd dollars….this is unheard of and I see some people talking about LIME is a good company……They have already sold out to Sony Ericsson…….People Let’s be Honest LIME has to go or come up with Cheaper rates…….PEACE

Richard are you trying to use this as a marketing strategy to win customers from LIME because I dont see how this puts Digicel at a disadvantage.

I think you should give the customers more value because you are ” Customers Champion” so they don’t use LIME product as a result they won’t be taking advantage of by LIME.(which is your Claim).

Look at this as an opportunity for Digicel.

I am sure DIGICEL is trying to simply get back at LIME for beating them in the market. I am not surprised by this pres conference…..DIGICEL, you are loosing this battle!

LIME ALONE ALONE…. LIME is spending serious money in our economy, they even help my sister with internet for one year, because we could not afford it at time ….this was a good deed ….a random act of kindness.

  21. March 14, 2014

Both companies are reaping off consumers, when u call lime on a digicel phone is like you call oversea its too expensive same as lime, the government should step in and stop allowing the phone companies over charge it citizens, once is a local number the call should be free even if you make your call from a different local company.
