Dominica ranks third in Caribbean for cell phone subscription

cell phoneDominica has ranked high in the region in terms of the use of cell phones and cell phone subscription, according to a report in the Caribbean Journal.

As a matter of fact, Dominica was ranked third in the entire region with the data showing many Dominicans having more than one cell phone subscription.

The most recent edition of the World Bank’s World Development Indicators report shows that Dominica has 152 mobile subscription to every 100 people.

Leading in the region is the Cayman Island with 172 subscription per 100 people with St. Kitts and Nevis in second place with 157 subscriptions.

St. Lucia fell in a distant eighth place with 126 subscription for every 100 people. Cuba ranked last with just 15 subscriptions.

The World Bank based its report on the database of the International Telecommunication Union’s World Telecommunication/ICT indicators.

I agree that calling a lim phone from a digicel phone is expensive . That’s y they buy lime and digicel phone. But that doesn’t mean both phones are expensive phones… Always quick to judge. Get ur facts str8 and then come bk and malpalay the gov’t and the country… Small minded set of freaking people.

I just got back from DA last week and this visit was my first experience with TopUp. My cousin lent us (one of) his phone because for some reason he had two or three. I thought it was because of his business he needed multiple phones; no idea it was a normal thing! But it took no time at all to real to realize this top up nonsense is a COMPLETE SCAM!! $20 EC goes before you can even finish your concersation practically. Dominica needs more competition in the mobile marketplace. If I had any interest in that industry I’d do it.

And please stop saying “Things are good in Dominica.” I can’t stand when Dominicans ignore reality to embrace something you damn well know is not true. This is the biggest weakness in this society. This tiny island with a relatively small population and high unemployment is THIRD in the Caribbean for cell phone subscriptions; that’s not problematic?? People REFUSE to be honest because they think they’ll lose face or something stupid like that that I can’t figure out. All is NOT good in DA. I visit and can’t find a single friend because EVERYBODY IS LEAVING as fast as they can. It ain’t cuz everything’s okay. Stop being so hypocritical.

  8. True dat
    May 22, 2014

The article is so true. I could never understand why one individual needs more than one phone. Every cell phone company that reaches Dominica means one more phone. People see the need to have a phone with all the cell phone companies. This report puts the icing on the cake I have been trying to sell to some of my friends for the longest while.

This is cell phone SUBSCRIPTIONS! Not minutes used. Meaning number of phones per capita (per person). Makes sense for us as obviously, several people own both LIME and DIGICEL phones and our population is small.

Maybe the political parties should see this as an opportunity to spread their message via text.
Anyway, Cellphone ownership is certainly an indicator of the economic situation in Dominica.
I heard the UWP leader tell Matt on Q95, that Dominicans are forced because of our Governments customs duty policies, to “import 10 years and older Junk (vehicles) from Japan”
But to me, the much increased numbers in privately owned vehicles on our roads is another indicator that all is not Unwell in Dominica

  15. Mobile Ranking????
    May 22, 2014

If it was an indicator of standard of living I do not mind. But that simples says we are still being abused by the mobile providers. We are spending a lot on telephone calls. Like one blogger put it as soon as you top up; its done.

Wait wait wait. People, just because Dominicans use their cell phones a lot doesn’t mean that the land is flowing with milk and honey. Things can be challenging in a country and its people are still high consumers of a particular thing. This chart was created to show cell phone subscription, not GDP or minimum wage. Get a grip.

Maybe not but it is an indication that to many Dominicans make inappropriate choices.

    May 22, 2014

So Dominica is near the top of some ranking :( . Oh how I wish it this list was the standard of living ranking.

I live in the Uk and understand why Dominica is 3rd in this list. Whenever I come home and I buy credit from Digicel and call a Lime phone, the minutes hardly last anytime. Calling cross network is expensive and costly and one thing I noticed was that Dominicans have either 2 mobiles or dual sim phones.

Everyone seems to think that this is a snapshot of how good things are but I think its contrary. I think Dominicans are trying to beat high tariffs set by these two mobile companies so they are having to use Digicel and Lime sims.

If you look at the countries like Jamaica, Guyana, Puerto Rico, Colombia, they are lower than Dominica and that indicates that there is more competition in the communication market as opposed to Dominica.

The exception is Cuba where the laws relating to the freedom of communication is very different to the rest of the Democratic countries on the list. Most Communist countries would rank at the bottom of such a list except China.

In England where there is fierce competition this trend we see in Dominica is the reverse because of the competitive tariffs.

The eastern Caribbean seems to be getting a rough deal but Dominicans need start being smart and disciplined and use their phones wisely instead of trying to beat the system . What Dominicans will find is that they are spending a huge amount of their disposable income to service their phone tariffs. For those who don’t work well God only knows how they can afford two phones never mind one smart phone. I hope none of you are doing anything naughty to service such habit :-D :-D :-D :-D

      May 23, 2014

What on EARTH are you talking about. Clearly you did not understand what you read.

THIS IS ABOUT DOMINICANS OWNING MORE THAN ONE CELL PHONE. NOT THE RATE OF PHONE CALLS.

FOR EVERY 100 DOMINICANs WHO PART-TOOK IN THE SURVEY, THEY (together) OWNED 152 CELLPHONES.

  19. LISTEN!!!!!
    May 22, 2014

Folks this data really says nothing about your economy.

    1. Where these phones bought from the providers?
    2. What is average purchase cost per cellphone base on the data in Dominica?
    3. Is this data heavily link to low cost phone given away for free or at a very low cost(50.00EC) from the providers when they launch new promotion?
    4. How many of these phones are smartphones?

There is so many question to ask here….I can tell you Bahamas has a lower subscription rate because there is only one mobile provider on island . Compared to DA, no need to carry around two phones to reduce you spending depending on which network is called. I can guaranty the average dollar spent in Bahamas on cellphone purchase is much higher than Dominica by far.

Data is so mis-leading for people who don’t understand this industry.

I will end by saying “Things are bad in Dominica”

  23. JoJo
    May 22, 2014

Why is the rate so low in Cuba? Fidel doesn’t want his people to talk?

    • Mobile Madness
      May 22, 2014

The list is not about rates but bout ownership of phones per 100 people. So every Dominican owns one phone and a half basically.

This is why the figures are so low in Cuba, Telephones – mobile cellular: One million mobile phones at the end of 2010 (9 per 100 inhabitants), up from 621,000 in 2009 and 330,000 in 2008, when all Cubans were allowed to buy and use them for the first time. Mobile-cellular telephone service is expensive and must be paid in convertible pesos, which limits subscribership.

Hope this answers your question JoJo
