Eastern Caribbean Central Bank issues $2 circulation coin

The Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB) will issue a $2 circulation coin to all the commercial banks which operate in the Eastern Caribbean Currency Union (ECCU) by mid-October.

The $2 circulation coin is legal tender, that is, it is a legal form of payment for financial transactions in the ECCU.  The coin, which is being issued as part of activities to celebrate 10 years of Financial Information Month (FIM), features the engraving of Queen Elizabeth the Second on the obverse side.  The reverse side displays the 2011 Financial Information Month logo, which depicts a tree growing from the palm of two hands with coins and the theme: “Grow Your Savings”.

The $2 circulation coin will be available to the public at CIBC First Caribbean International Bank, National Bank of Dominica and RBC Royal Bank of Canada by Friday 14 October 2011.

Whose head is on the money is not an issue. The real issue is that our people are still not learning to work for that money! They can put whoever they want on the bill… as long as I have access to it when I work had. Dominicans have an issue with everything except what really matters. We wallow in laziness and then have issues with the Queen on our money. Garcon I say long live the queen if I can get a fair days pay for a fair days work!

    • What Queen?
      October 13, 2011

Talk for your lazy self about wallowing. Some of you should never be allowed to access the internet with this complete breakdown of respect for other peoples’ OPINIONS! How would you know what the people commenting about the image on the coin are up to which led you to make the argument “Dominicans are wallowing in laziness”? If you choose to dimiss it, since clearly all you are desperate for is money, then so be it. You would be amazed if you only knew what some of the posters behind those ideas have achieved. Learn to respect people’s opinions that yours in turn can be respected.Maybe if you read more you would understand the argument.

By the way what is a fair days work for a fair days pay? Aren’t we always going to want more even though we accept that which has been offered? Now here’s some intellectual argument for your mind settling stance of accepting the status quo!

Independent islands with such rich history and great stalwarts yet they continue to idolize Queen Elizabeth? what is this womans’ image doing on Eastern Caribbean coins in this day and age? What happen to all our heroes?

The reason for that is simple.Dominica is the only country in the O.E.C.S which has a president as the head of the country. All the other members of the O.E.C.S have a Governor-General as the head of their country. The Governors-General are representatives of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth as these countries still recognize the British Monarch as head of their state. However it is up to all the members to decide if they should make changes to the currency.Hope i answered your question in a reasonable way

Wong-ping she is the figure head of Commonwealth not head of the Eastern Caribbean Central bank and its members. Two completely different things. It’s important that we inform ourselves and build our own legacies as a people, as a sub region.

but there has been some changes in numerous past times, lagoon for example, was called queen mary street, freedom street, and whatever it is now, independent street, so what are you talking about, the principle here is we are an independent people, and there was a reason why we became independent,to get rid of all these past colonial pains of slavery.so start pride yourself,be someone because you are someone,be a people because you are a people,in the eyes of god and a glorious and proud african descent.

“EC is the way forward for the Caribbean. it is a stable currency”… The EC is tied to the dollar and the dollar is being devalued, this means the EC is being devalued. Why do you want “$200 & $500 notes” because you can’t buy as many goods for your EC.
There are lots of ways to save against falling currencies.

  14. Cassandra,
    October 13, 2011

The E.C.$. is a very stable currency although only used by some 600,000 people spread over 8 territories. Six of these are independent countries, all of which have the Queen as head of state, except for Dominica. However, Dominica is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations, which also recognizes the Queen as head. That arrangement has served us well and I wonder who’s image should be on our trusted currency instead that would serve us better , apart from our ego? I am far more interested in maintaining the integrity of our beloved, and much admired dollar!

    • G.I Joe
      October 13, 2011

The image of the Queen and the stability of the currency are two separate issues. If anything, the stability of the currency comes from its linkage to the US dollar.

Surely we can find other symbols that represent Caribbean themes or people of note who we can be emblazzen on our currency.

      • Cassandra,
        October 13, 2011

You are right, and I never claimed that the E.C.$. has remained strong because it carries the image of the British monarch but one may argue that it conveys a message of stability. On the other hand, the fact that the Jamaican dollar, for instance, bears images of local heroes & dignitaries is no guarantee for the maintenance of that currency’s value. From a high of some U.S.0.77 after its inception to just a fraction over U.S.0.01 today (…one U.S. cent for oen Jamaican dollar, if you are lucky enough to be able to convert it!) is testament to that. Why tinker with something that is good even if it does link us to our colonial past?

      • G.I Joe
        October 13, 2011

I still have difficulty understanding how the image and the stability of a currency is being mentioned in the same sentence.

On the one hand you said you were not trying to imply that the EC dollar’s stability was not tied to the image if the queen, yet you brought in the JA dollar to make a case, somehow leaving the impression that in some way there might be a correlation.

The fact of the matter is, you could have the image of a ded fish on your currency. Once you have an economy that supports it, your currency will have value. Another way to maintain that stability RELATIVE to another currency is to peg it to that currency.

Try unpegging the EC dollar from the US dollar and you will see what would happen, even with the queen’s head imprinted to the currency? The stability of the EC dollar has everything to do with the stability of the US dollar. We have no control over that. Our fortunes or misfortunes as far as the merits of that relationship has everything to do with what happens in Washington, not the OECS.

The dollar bill was removed for a reason . Do you know the amount of dollar coins we have in circulation?… alot. Because of its value, even the lowest paro will have a couple of them. Coins are sturdiuer and more durable. It would cost the ECCB too much to be printing and printing dollar bills, because they will mutilate much quicker than any other bill

Queen Elizabeth is still inependently the Queen of St. Kitts and Nevis, of Antigua and Barbuda, of St. Vincent and of St.Lucia and queen of Grenada. But she is NOT the Queen of Dominica. Because we are the only nation in the ECCB which does not have Elizabeth as head of state, we accept the majority and have her face on our currency.

Besides Queen Elizabeth is a face that is known internationally and therefore gives international credibility to our currency. Thats one of the reasons as well.

Isn’t it time that the leaders of the countries in the Caribbean using EC$ take the head of the queen off our money? I mean they are taking away so many benefits from the Caribbean already. Can we not manage with one of our own prominent Caribbean man or woman of something to signify each country who uses the EC$?
