Dominica has received $150-million in assistance from the European Union (EU) over the last four years, outgoing head of the EU Delegation to Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean Valeriano Diaz has said.
Diaz said during a courtesy visit to Dominica last week that the money went towards projects and budgetary support and pledged continued EU support for the island.
“It has been much needed funds for Government in these challenging times,” he said of the support.
The outgoing envoy noted that a new European Union’s Policy called “Agenda for Change” is to focus on the more impoverished countries but has given the assurance that Dominica will not be affected. “In the case of the Caribbean, a decision has not been taken yet. There is a simulation being done in Brussels to see how the balance is. What I can say in my personal opinion based on discussions held in Brussels, Dominica will not suffer,” Diaz stated.
He said Dominica will continue to receive EU assistance because of the island’s continued vulnerabilities to natural disasters and external economic shocks. “The reason basically is the vulnerability of the island. Dominica and other similar islands will continue to have vulnerabilities to natural disasters, also vulnerability to external economic shocks. That is an argument that has been heard in Brussels and I think will be taken into account seriously,” he said.
Diaz thanked the Government of Dominica for the management of its EU funded projects and for the guidance and support of Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit who has been following up on Dominica’s Portfolio with the EU.
Diaz will leave the Caribbean shortly to take up a new post in Brussels.

If that is true that is almost equivalent to the amounts we received from China and more than we received from Venezuela for the same period. Yet i hardly hear praised being given to them. Also the monies are given as grant for project that are done by locals not European. People this is significant it is not who talk the loudest(China) that really our friends.

some people can talk pure BS. They are not even aware of the nonsense they are uttering. If the EU was basing its development assistance to Dominica on Dominica’s treatment of homosexuals, then the EU would not be giving any aid, save perhaps humanitarian aid in times of crises, to Dominica.
