Fake BlackBerries break hearts

A fake BlackBerry reportedly sold in Roseau

Despite lackluster performance and financial woes on the international market, BlackBerry phones are doing quite well on the island and many Dominicans strive to own one.

However the dreams of many to own a BlackBerry are being dashed as they fall prey to fake handsets that are popping up in certain stores in Roseau.

As a matter of fact some of these handsets look so authentic it is hard to differentiate between the real and the fake.

What seems to take BlackBerry-hungry customers off-guard are the attractive prices these fake smart phones are being sold for.

Additionally no one seems to notice until it is too late that some of these phones are actually named ‘BlackBorry,’ not the prized ‘BlackBerry’ brand.

Dominica News Online has been following reports of the sale of these fake phones and apart from close name to the real thing, it was discovered they don’t even come with a BlackBerry PIN, a crucial component for tapping into BlackBerry’s global network.

One man, who fell into the trap, told DNO his fiance’s birthday was ruined after he innocently purchased a ‘BlackBerry Bold’ for $700 in Roseau for her birthday.

He said he realized it was fake after the damage was already done. “My girl called me fake along with the BlackBerry,” he lamented. “She even cried and didn’t speak to me for several days because a BlackBerry was all she wanted, since she never had one before.”

He said some people might think he was stupid to fall into the trap but he said he just didn’t know. “Not even internet my girlfriend could get on the phone,” he said. “She was so excited when her co-workers asked her for her PIN only to realize the the phone was PIN-less.”

He said he went back to the store but was told there were no refunds.

The man said he made a report to a police officer who only told him to make sure he watches what he buys.

It may be wise for other BlackBerry hunters to heed the officer’s advice.

To those of you castigating the woman. Have you stopped to consider that maybe she thought that her fiance was trying to pull a fast one on her by trying to pass off a fake as the real thing? Some men do that, you know. Years ago a guy tried to give me a gold plated necklace as a gift, while tryin to convince me it was 18kt gold, and it “cost him an arm and a leg”. Needless to say, he’s my ex-boyfriend.

Dominicans must get their priorities right, I can afford a samsung galaxy or whatever the latest craze is, but all I have is a phone which can make and recieve calls, I do not need status symbols, everyone who needs to know already know who I am, and this applies to everyone’s else status in society.

This is a sad story and no laughing matter. I visited Dominica and had my runnings with a Chinese store although it did not cost me that much. PEOPLE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE DO NOT BUY IN CHINESE STORES. It is not worth it. And for those of you who kept saying he should had read and know it was fake, $700 does not amount to a fake BB. This man deserve his money back. It’s time Dominicans begin to put these Chinese in their place. And the woman, as a woman I feel bad for her and bad towards her. Stop living your life based on people’s approval. So what if your man accidentally bought you a fake phone; so you have to call him fake. Your true colors are showing girl.

The person who fell into the trap should reveal the name of the store that he bought the fakeberry from. As long as he has a receipt from the store and he is not telling a lie he has nothing to fear. He should tell us the name of the store. I also think the man should have some legal recourse because the store misrpresented what they were selling. That type of item (as long as it is labelled “Blackberry”) is not something that a reasonable person will be able to identify as fake on a mere physcial inspection. Somebody affected should sue. I can’t wait for the day when Dominica gets its Consumer Protection Laws.

    September 27, 2012

The store should refund the $700 dollars, “No Refunds” is bogus, especially under the assumption that you were buying the real thing. Absolutely Ridiculous.

    September 27, 2012

First of all, In order for any company to sell telecommunications equipment in Dominica they must first obtain a telecommunications dealers license. The question is whether this phone was bought from a licensed telecommunications dealer. If this store is not licenced they are in serious breach of the telecommunications act. If they are licenced then they fall under the jurisdiction of the National Telecommunications Regulatory Commission. If the buyer wants to seek redress he can report the matter to the National Telecommunications Regulatory Commission.

I don’t could be materialist but i don’t think a woman who deserves that name, should kill her longlife relationship for a piece of material. The gentleman should find the receipt, the name of the store and its owners and file a civil suite in court. that’s false advertisement, misleading customers, stealing, and I could go on.

As for the young lady, she aint no lady.. he should leave her. if she did not speak to him for three days, that should tell him she is only with him for material things; I understand she really wanted a Blackberry, ( I guess she did not need it) wanted a blacberry becuase all her co-workers have one. she of all people should be greatful, though it was fake, that he spent $700.00 for a birthday present. I take it he did not know and that the price was a good bargain, If I were him, I would live her, drop her like its hot and find someone who would love him for him and not whats in his pocket and what everyone has.

Our women are becoming to materialistic and we men are falling for it for what, a piece of a##, pretty face… my boy file a civil suite, leave the girl and find someone else, you`ll be better of.

Selling fake items is a serious intellectual property crime everywhere in the world including Dominica. The legitimate business community can file a complaint against the purveyors of fake items who are hurting their legitimate businesses. They should not sit idly by like sheep and allow the country to be flooded by fake brands. BY the way please do not buy a fake brand product and take it to Guadeloupe; French law is extremely strict on counterfeit goods. Having a single counterfeit item like a bogus Lacoste shirt on you could get you a fine as high as 300,000 euros!!!!

A couple weeks ago the St. Lucian and Martinique customs busted a group who was trying to smuggle counterfeit products into Martinique from St. Lucia.

That’s why i doh like vanity women.
Some of us Dominicans would sell our soul for a blackberry, just so that we can say we own one and to use a BB service, how low can we get.

I wonder if we realize BB service is similar to SMS and any up to date smartphone can support better services.

Is time we must start getting our own style, and stop looking on what your friends or others have.

What a sad commentary this article is on today’s society. It states that most Dominicans strive to own a Blackberry – not a house, or something of real value, but a Blackberry. SMH! Note to all Dominicans, Blackberry is obsolete in the rest of the world so save your money and spend it on something of real value.

Fed up – you mean it took this article to let you know how obsessed Dominicans are with Blackberry? Before somebody tell you hello, they asking for your BB PIN. I am just absolutely amazed by this blackberry craze. Who making bom, who stealing, you not paying their rent and bills. All for a phone. Sad!!

The Chinese are being busted in Canada selling all the fake, bags, fake Gucci, fake Roots, fake medications etc

Some times ago the RCMP,and OPP raided a warehouse belonging to Chinese in Southern Ontario with all those fake items, I visited Dominica two years, it hurt to see the stuff, that the Chinese are selling in Dominica to Dominicans for that high price under false pretence knowing that they are fake

    • T.dot
      September 26, 2012

yeah, that’s so true! so what the can’t get away with here in T.O and other places send to other countries where lots of the people don’t know the fake from real and now have my people crying. Cha!

very good comment…..Interesting, cause it is true about no receipt, also no vat, but Inland Revenue going in local businesses accounts to take their money for Vat. And the Chinese? Nothing……its a disgusting mess and a slap in the face of all the local businesses who have been sticking the uphill grind year in year out. Shameful situation!

    • Dominican/Montreal
      September 26, 2012

As the saying goes, monkey knows what tree branch to9 climb, those Chinese knows exactly that all the stuff being sold by them on the island is fake

If the person have their payment documents they need to file a lawsuit against the business place for selling fake merchandise

For sure if this happen to me in Canada, i will take the item to the (BBB) Better Business Bureau, get a lawyer and sue the business owner big time, for pain and suffering, selling items knowing that they are fake etc

What they cannot od in their country that’s what they are doing in Dominica, fooling our people and taking advantage of them

  75. Brathwait
    September 26, 2012

This is serious business and should be investigated by the authorities. This is an intentional misrepresentation of facts, and the stores selling these fakes should be exposed. Why sell me a phone that looks perfectly identical, give it a name so similar and tell me I should look at what I’m buying. These merchants should be made to pay for their dishonesty.

    • Business Law
      September 27, 2012

The vitiating factor is MISREPRESENTATION (Fraudulent misrepresentation) this is known as thought of deceit. The fact that the name and features are almost identical, it is infact FRAUDULENT MISREPRESENTATION.
so who says that the gentleman cannot sue the store? Ignorance is NO excuse to the law. Too many of us small Caribbean always seem to be afraid of fighting for our rights in the civil court.
      I say SUE the store
