Gas prices go down in Dominica

gas pricesDirector of Trade, Matthan Walter, has announced that Dominicans will now experience a decrease in the price of gasoline, and a “very slight” increase in the prices of diesel and kerosene.

The new prices came into effect on Monday, July 18, 2016.

The price of gasoline currently stands at $10.74 per gallon—a drop of 32 cents from the original price.

The price of diesel per gallon increased by 5 cents, from $9.24 to $9.29, while a gallon of kerosene is now sold for 8 cents more, at $7.93.

Walter explained that the change in the price of gasoline is due to a decrease in the price of oil.

“The decrease in the price of gasoline is simply because of the fact that we have moved downwards,” he said. “There has been a slight depression from a previous average for the barrel of oil at $48.49. It has decreased to $47.72.”

Similarly, he noted that there has been a decrease in price of Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG), “across the board.”

“For the 100-pound cylinder, the current price is $133.09, the previous price was $133.68. For the 30-pound cylinder, the current price is $40.93, the previous price was $41.11. For the 27.5-pound cylinder, the current price is $37.60, the past price was $37.77, and for the 20-pound cylinder, the current price is $27.62, the past price is $27.74,” Walter elaborated.

He highlighted the efforts of the Ministry of Trade to bring immediate benefit to consumers.

“Any amount that is decreased is a benefit to the consumer…” Walter stated. “What we have now is the realization and the immediate reaction from the Ministry of Trade to decreases, for example, in the prices of those products in the world market, for the benefit of the consumer.”
In March 2016, Walter said that Dominicans were experiencing the lowest drop in gas prices in five years, with gasoline at $9.16 per gallon, diesel at $7.74 a gallon, and kerosene at $6.58 per gallon.

:?: $10.74 a gallon of gas is very much too expensive, the government can afford to lower the price to$8.00.
