Gasoline price drops below $10; biggest fuel price drop in five years

gas pricesEffective Monday, January 4, 2016, customers will see a reduction in the wholesale and retail prices of petroleum products, the Ministry of Trade has announced.

Director of Trade, Matthan Walter said for gasoline there is a decrease of 33 cents, 48 cents for diesel and, 40 cents decrease for kerosene.

This means the price of gasoline has dropped below $10 to $9.85 per gallon from $10.18 per gallon

Walter said Dominica hasn’t had such a significant decrease in the price of fuel in the last five years.

“In the last five years there has never been a decrease of the petroleum products, most especially gasoline, and diesel below the price of $10,” he noted.

For diesel, the retail price is now $8.72 per gallon from $9.38.

The retail price of kerosene now stands at $7.53 per gallon from $7.93.

“So it’s a significant change and the hope is that the consumer of those products would realize a decrease as it relates to the cost of commuting from one place to the next, obviously on their own vehicles, for the time being,” Walter stated.

He went on to say that in the area of Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG), there is a decrease of 74 cents in the 20lb cylinder; $1.02 cents in the 27.5 lb cylinder; $1.11 cents decrease for the 30lb cylinder and $3.69 decrease in the 11lb cylinder (see full prices below).

Walter explained the drop in prices, noting that usually there is a four week, five-day calculation and on average the price of a barrel of oil is $37.03 cents on the international market.

“Previously we had an average of $42.65, so there has been a decrease of the oil product on the world market…,” he explained. “The fact that we are using postings that are as close as possible to the world prices, we would have an immediate impact on the local market for the prices of the petroleum products.”

He pointed out that a decrease in the prices of bus fares are not expected “but we would also hope to realize a decrease, for example, in our electric bills.”

And according to him, the decrease in the price of diesel, with all variables being considered, usually constitutes some decrease in the amount that “we pay for the electricity product over that period of time.”

For Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) cooking gas the new prices are:

Retail price:
20 lbs cylinder – $24.02 (was $24.76)
27.5 lbs cylinder – $32.65 ($33.67)
30 lbs cylinder – $35.53 ($36.64)
100 lbs cylinder – $115.09 (was $118.78)

Wholesale Price

20 lbs cylinder $23.02
27.5 lbs cylinder $31.65
30lbs cylinder $34.53
100 lbs $115.09

I expected a bigger drop, The Caribbean seems to be paying much more for gas. If gas is under ten in Dominica then Dominicans are paying up to $3.75 US dollars for gas whereas gas in the US is under $2. US dollars. I filled up on 1.55US a gallon a few days ago.The petrol industry is making its profit in the poor Caribbean countries. usually most things (non electronics) in USA are close to prices in Dominica for instance KFC cost 5 USA dollars which is equivalent to about 13 ECC. THE GAS SHOULD DROP TO $6.

These drop in prices is welcome in those hard times. The concerns i have though is the corresponding drop in auxiliary prices of oil based products e.g engine oils. These prices have not moved one inch in the last year. Additionally prices of every other product should have also recorded drops. The cost of production has fallen, cost of transportation has also fallen and or cost of logistics. Anybody can shed the light?

      Kylo_Ren

When the prices are high it is Skerrit’s fault. When they decrease it is no thanks to him. Make up your mind bro.

Which foreigners are helping you with gas prices? When the price decreases on the world market due to the vagaries of demand and supply and other factors, people in our part of the world benefit. When they increase we bear the pain. why do we just keep spouting useless comments on every subject in this way?

      Dissident

It seems like the last phrase fits you better than other people. If you are highly qualified as you infer, use your brain and qualifications to create a job for yourself and if you can’t find a “real” job as you indicate take what is available until you can get create a real one.

You know the number of Dominicans who have jobs to do around the place and are sick with frustration until a Haitian or someone from another country comes forward to do it? Some Dominicans prefer to occupy themselves with cursing the government and people who have worked hard to get where they are, morning, noon and night. Let’s see where that gets you all!

Thanks to our PM who negotiated the new gas prices while in Dubai trying to sell passports. Our PM really know how to negotiate for himself and for the people. I am sure Canadians can learn from my PM.

This person is nuts indeed, projecting the wicked trait and for also wickedly impersonating the name I use.
Some people get a kick out of being wicked and never have anything constructive to state, to add to the discussion. It shows the type of heart,
One day a spoke will be placed in this person’s wheel when it is least expected.

Do not make me laugh gas is a dime a gallon in the middle east and less than two USA Dollars which is about five ECC a gallon . your PM didn’t do , look at news the prices of barrels of gas has dropped tremendously, several people who work for Exxon and shell have lost their JObs because gas prices are so low. stop looking for stuff to praise this for. when the barrel prices drop every where benifits, when the prices increase everyone feels the struggle, we were paying up yo four USA dollars now its one buck fifty I guess your PM do that too. gullible
