Government only doing fair job on economy – Survey

A slight majority of Dominicans beleive that the Roosevelt Skerrit-led government is only doing a fair job in terms of the economy.

This is the result of a survey done by Department of Management Studies, UWI, Cave Hill for the third quarter of 2011.

The survey done by UWI asked the following question: As to the economic policies of the government would you say the government is doing a good job, only fair, or a poor job?

Of those surveyed in Dominica, eight percent think the government is doing a good job, while 42 percent think the government is only doing a fair job.

On the other hand 39 percent said the government is doing a poor job while 10 percent gave the response of “Don’t know.”

The survey was done in Caricom member states. The full result of the survey is below.

Well, it is what it is…If the approval rating of the Govt. is 8%, We have a heck of a long way to go, and a heck of a lot of work to do….. But, I don’t want to be unfair….42% of the People did say that the Government is doing a fair job…So technically speaking,if you are hovering around the 50% mark,(8%+42%), that’s not bad…

And in looking at the chart,we are not doing all that bad, after all; in comparison to some of our neighbors who claimed to be doing so much better than we are……In reality, there is a heck of a lot more room for improvement.

But you should not be complacent. And one of my problems with this administration is its complacency in some areas, far as the People are concerned…..And to some extent, the Opposition…well they seems weak, disorganized, not up to the challenge, not viable enough, or formidable enough. And apparently, in disarray…
They themselves need to do much more. They have to present themselves to the People, as a solid alternative…And in my opinion, they have not done a good job at doing that, not adequately at least….I hear lots of noises,I hear lots of talking,..heck I hear a mighty rumbling…But alas!,…I see nothing, and no one emerging……But,so much for that…

We also have to take into consideration, that we are in a global recession…There is a Worldwide Economic crisis…

Bottom line is,there is a cash flow problem,so most Govt.,have to watch how they spend money…They need to be a bit more prudent,in the way they go about spending money.

But this Government have to get its priorities straight..I am not anti-Government,I am pro Country….I like the Prime Minister, I believe he is a good man; I disagree with some of his Policies…But irrespective of your Political views,or differences, he is OUR Prime Minister, and we have to respect the OFFICE.

You must think in terms of Investments and Jobs. One must keep in mind that the stimulus of a Economy is investments and a solid work force…Therefore, you must create an atmosphere that is friendly and attractive to investments…domestic and foreign.

I am not only blaming this present Govt.,but past ones as well…..We are an Independent Island(Nation). We are Sovereign, and have to be able to stand on our own two feet…Therefore we have to start producing the means of our subsistence.
You cannot claim to be Sovereign while you are looking to someone else for your subsistence..Is this really what Independence is all about?..

WE need to start producing….Borrowing and Taxation is a recipe for disaster and poverty….How are we to go forward if we do not understand how we got in the predicament that we are in presently.

See,the problem with borrowing money,is when we borrow money,we do not use the money to set up Industries for sustained Economic development and ultimately economic growth;for you cannot have economic growth unless you have economic development.

We need to think in terms of Manufacturing. Which will create jobs and opportunities for our People. Economic development for sustained economic growth…Let us lean towards being more efficient…..Let us think in terms of Industrialization….The wealthiest Nations in the World are all Industrialized Countries..And that, is the difference between First world, and Third World Countries.

What about Little Dominica?, we can, yes, we can. We need to understand the principles of LEADERSHIP and the underpinning of what propels once underdeveloped Nations from Third World Countries to First World Countries. You might say this will take years and years. This may be so,..but,….
We have to start somewhere, and now is the time…Let us all put our differences aside..We need to come together as one. Let our Leaders be Leaders, and start leading. Let us rally behind them. And,Let us all put our shoulders to the wheel, and together we can take our Country forward into this the 21st Century…
I am appealing to everyone!..Hear Oh my fellow Citizens!Hear my humble cry!….

Let our motto.”ALL FOR EACH AND EACH FOR ALL” be an attainable dream..Make it a reality now. And let it not be a fleeting illusion…..TOGETHER WE WILL,YES WE WILL….
    I AM DOMINICA!…YOU ARE DOMINICA!…

Profound Peace…and…All the Best to all….

    INTELLECTUAL GANGSTA!!!

I grade the DLP with a B+. We will also need to invest more in Agriculture, Horticulture, and importantly, Manufacturing. Now that Melville Hall has been upgraded and modernized, we will need to focus on upgrading and expanding our Deep Water Harbour to allow for more than one ship to berth at the same time. Toying with the idea of converting the Canefield Airstrip into a Tourism Cruise Village Center would be a welcome thought. Our infrastructure is taking shape with the building of the Roseau to Portsmouth Highway and the re-doing of the road from Roseau to Melville Hall plus building new bridges and repairing old ones, all of that will greatly enhance our road network. The Halls of Justice on Bath Road is long-awaited where you will always be exonerated. Will Continue…………

DE CARIBBEAN CHANGE,So every piece of concrete u call development? It shows how low your expectations are,one can become really blind when one is caught up in partisan politics. If putting up a few concrete structures which does not amount to people’s development is what a government can boast of,we do not need a government.A a child growing up the people in my village used to build roads,so we do not need government for these things. We need a government that can go beyond that.An airport only LIAT can land on u’re bragging about,u probably never travel as much i do,i’ll have to invite u next time i’m going out.

A small sample of persons was selected for the survey. In an elections all votes are counted. Did the survey take into account all the Skerrits elderly…. Boy allyou mad…

Spaggs as long you keep working out of that House, you will certainly remain in the yard.. Dominicans will teach you a lesson. Boy do your work for the money you are getting and stop allowing Eddison and Ron Green use you like mageeeeee.
\you are handing Skerrit a PM position on a silver platter. That opposition is just too weak and misguided.

You must be more analytical. When Spaggs walked out the speaker and Skerro vacated his seat. Guess what? His constituents replaced him in better than they did before fatlix and riverpool took his seat and tried to get it for DLP. You must analyse things

This Government doesnot know how to generate cash and also make cash circulate in the economy.Unless every working Dominican has spending power the economy is not doing good.

    • October 25, 2011

That’s exactly the bottom line the economy in D’ICA is in the pits I question those nuimbers because untill all of D’ca working class men and women have a job where they can get off the systems the economy will never grow and only those who benefit from the hand outs will make it, Dominicans fail to realized that they have the power to change the develop[ment in the island but they are just too lazy to act

someone said that the survey was done by uwi, my friends do not fool you all selves this learned persons can play around with figures to reflect whatever pictures they want.that’s what statistics are meant to do. my friend you remember when labour party conducted their polls last time it showed they were winning in a particular constituency—when uwp carried out their polls in the same area for the same period t\it showed that they were winning. that is what survey does.

this info is enlightening…….we have tings so sweet here that only 8% have faith in this DLP Chinese/Venezuela sponsored government? How does that compare to a sweeping DLP victory 18-3….(de people love us bwoy…..hahahahahaha WAKE UP!!!!!!!!!
Its a pity that poll was held among CARICOM States……we should have had heads up notice about that poll…..DLP could have chartered a flight for their far abroad citizens to take part in the poll…hahahahaha…….Red Clinic recipients whould have voted strong too….

I remember this survey. I have to say I answered some questions on faith. WHen they asked about future even if I didn’t feel optimistic I said Lord help me to be optimistic. I was one of those fair people for sure.. not wantind to confess bad.. praying for good. Lord please hear our prayers even as we have answered the questions about the future in faith believing that things will get better.

    October 25, 2011

Taking into account the respondents that were in the Good and Fair categories, 50% of Dominicans believe that their Government is doing a Good or Fair job managing the economy in these difficult times as compared 39% that feel they are doing a poor job.

This can certainly not be seen as an inditement of the Government’s handling of the economy, if anything the opposite is true. Given the global financial situation any government would be proud to have 50% or more of their citizens supporting their handling of the country’s finances.

It looks like the DLP is going from strength to strength and the future is bright with Labour!

I welcome this survey. My own view is that the Governments of teh region, including that of Dominica, are not doing enough to transition the economies of their territory from heavy dependence on a single activity, foreign aid and heavy borrowings. We are not fundamnetally addressing the question of how we build a modern economy that builds on our comparative advantage, science and technology and supportive institutional reforms.

You hit the hail right on the head. As I said in a previos posting, there is too much relaiance on tourism. Agriculture will not do it for Dominca, so we difinitely have to move into something that can build on emerging technologies and trend. We have too.

Take the 39% poor +10% no response and 21% (half of the 42% Fair) = 70% are unhappy

This is a stack reminder that Labor days are numbered. Win loose or draw in the dual citizenship case, Labor cannot and will not win the next election as long as there is a credible/ viable alternative. I can now sing sanky..

    • WIKILEAKS
      October 25, 2011

Uncle Dildo, Hector John is the new PM…Papamet.

But if you take your ownstatistics

      A=24 ; B=42, C= 31 and D = 3

      A+B = 24 +42 = 66%

      C+D = 31+3 = 34%

It looks identical to the election results of 2009.

      The electorate are not stupid

I say put Spags as PM
