Gov’t promises 300 new jobs

new jobsDominica’s Acting Prime Minister, Reginald Austrie, has said that 300 jobs could be added to the Dominican workforce.

Austrie, who was delivering an address at the Penville Feast on the weekend, says Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit is currently negotiating the construction of a new call center in Dominica and, if fruitful, will be the source of the new jobs.

“He (Prime Minister Skerrit) is out of state and I can give you some good news, that he will be coming back with about 300 brand new jobs whenever he arrives in Dominica,” he said.

According to Austrie, Skerrit went to Colorado to speak with one of the biggest call centers in that US state.

“They have promised to come to Dominica to look at the possibilities of establishing a facility that will employ up to 300 young people,” he stated.

According to Austrie, the global credit crunch makes it more difficult to wait on investments and the government must take the initiative to bring in investors.

“You cannot remain in Dominica and expect things to happen. You have to go out and look for the opportunities … you get calls at short notice. Nobody is waiting for you to come to them,” he said.

According to Austrie because of the search for investments, Prime Minister Skerrit has been doing a lot of traveling and Cabinet is worried.

“We have been very worried as a Cabinet about the amount of traveling that Roosevelt Skerrit does … is from China, to Cuba to Nicaragua, to Venezuela, to the United States … it is just a lot of on the young man, but he does not have a choice,” Austrie said.

Politics is a thing. People must learn to be honest, all Austrie had to say was that we are losing a certain number of jobs at the Call Center and in light of this we are working hard to replace this jobs. Nothing hard about saying that..

A Call Center? What type? What is the product? Call Centers provide hourly pay. What is the hourly pay? Does Dominica have a minimum ‘hourly’ wage structure?
Sometime ago one was established in Dominica. How well is it doing? What is staff turnover like?
The pay is hourly with no benefits as also no paid vacation. Unless it is operated by the government, staff will receive it.
Employment at Call Centers is not a surety. You must produce a certain amount of funds/sales to remain employed.
The atmosphere at Call Centers is stressful. Staff is watched as a cat watches a mouse and are consistently monitored.
In addition, what places will they be calling? I suppose this and the product will be released later.
These days, people do not like being called at home; no exception if calls are made to businesses. The government of Canada has established a “No Calling List” whereby people can call a telephone number and place their phone numbers on that list.
People were disturbed also at dinner time and also received numerous calls that complaints were made to that department. No one was exempt. This has decreased the telemarketing enterprises and jobs.
There are rules and regulations to follow. Certain people can be telephoned, if they are previous customers/clients.
Those who telephone phone numbers that are on the “No Calling List” will be charged a certain amount of money. This has decreased the number of calls.
My residence would get a lot of those calls up to 9.30 pm in the evening; also on Saturdays and Sundays, the latter from 12.00 pm. Those calls have now ceased.
With Visual Call Display, some people may not answer the phone of Private Name, Private Number and 1-800 numbers; also if they do not recognize the callers’ numbers.
The business atmosphere at those Call Centers is not all that good. I am sorry to say, I would not recommend a Call Center or encourage anyone to work in one unless they are in management.
If only there was another type of business or more which would employ 300 or more people and offer them permanent jobs with adequate salary and benefits, this would be ideal for Dominica and nationals, better than a Call Center.

300 jobs at a call center really ??? not that I am not greatfull that they are trying but think about cant they come up with better ideas why make dominica dependent on foreign investors who can leave whenever they feel too and treat their workers unfairly hence clear habour…. and still 300 jobs is nothing to celebrate in a country where over 6000 people are unemployed … when the large super market close down more than 300 people will be affected and much more than 300 just graduated from college and high school . this government has failed us greatly :-| and dominicans will still accept corrupt greed riven arrogant fools to lead us

more jobs yes but for unqualified persons.which is still good but these call centers are corrupting the young people employed there. the current call centers are know by many as Sodom and Gomorrah.persons employed there have also been known to take raciest comments and treated like dirt or worst from customers on a daily. and what about work for the ones who want to put back into the country engineers, doctors, chemist etc.

We hope and pray the day Dominica gets away from dependency. Will it happen in our lifetime?

Another call center for more jobs – not too bad; the crucial question remains, when are we going to fully utilize our Agricultural raw material and to provide industries/factories to make secondary produce (box drinks) etc. for exports?

When will a restructuring, retraining and forensics take place to provide security and proper conviction of criminals in order that Dominica remains a safe place for investment? When will a crime free society be achieved? Austria has about 7 million people yet their crime rate is extremely low, can we do it?

When will we seriously upgrade our hospitals and expertise so that Dominican citizens wouldn’t have to spend millions of dollars in French countries for medical treatment?

Lastly, when will the Dominican populace put politics aside and look at the real issues that builds a healthy country? Do we really know what these issues are ladies and gentlemen? Our younger generation are coming up, what are we really doing for them? The cycle of poverty, unemployment, abuse continues… – The saga continues. May the hand of Allah/God avail this country. Ameen.

Francis and Baptiste AND Harlem what is all you stress. Please leave my two cousins Baptiste & Francis out of the politics. Too often we use DNO to denigrate people. If either of those individuals have any such intent to get involved in DFP, DPF , DLM, UWP or DLP etc politics then the people of Newtown would have been informed already about this eventuality. Am close to both of them and as far as am concerned none of them have such interests. Either of them could be very formidable candidates for which ever party they may chose to run for.

After 13 years in office it is that time again to repeat the election promises that were never delivered after 13 years! Anyway let’s do this – it’s promises time again, so promises, promises. Interesting so to get the call center is the PM who has to go to get it. Wow the rest of the country must be busy doing something else that why he is the only person to get new business. And Mr short neck you can wait until the deal is closed, the company has at least come to see what our infrastructure is like, inform of their intent to be able to operate in our business environment before you put that news out….it is very challenging for the one call center we have to operate in Dominica and God knows how long they will stay….

When Ambrose made the statement,”if not Skerrit, then who,” we criticised him. Maybe, he knew what he was talking about. Consider the following statements by Reggie,”the global credit crunch makes it more difficult to wait on investments and the Government must take the initiative to bring IN investors, you cannot remain in Dominica and look for opportunities, you get calls at short notice, nobody is waiting for you to come to them.” When Reggie inhales he tells us Government must bring IN investors but when he exhales he tells us Skerrit must travel, and he is worried because of Skerrit’s frequent travels. Is he telling us, Skerrit doesn’t trust Dominica’s Ambassador in China, Nicaragua, Venezuala and the United States or their negotiating skills are limited or Ambrose is telling the truth.

sorry i could not finish reading this article. If you guys have watched the amount of TV that I have over the years you will see why it appears funny to me. Picture this as a motion film where a young black leader of a very poor country leaves that country with nothing more than a suitcase and all his country’s riches to go to NY city to invest that money so that he is able to buy medicine to heal his people. Well what normally happens in these movies (usually comedy in nature), is that the young leader is tricked by some wallstreet person or politician and looses all of his country’s riches. Skerrit this is how it looks right not, you have made yourself out to be the people’s savior remember that when you go out there.

Now all they need is to get the Valley, or St. Joe, or Roseau Central, or Point Mitchel, or the Reserve. Wow, for sure they will get at least two of these and at least 1 from what I didn’t mention.

Those of you that are accusing DNO as being the voice of UWP should consider the following:

    1. Did DNO make a story or did they quote some silly, desperate, and unwise statements made by the acting PM, Regie Austrie? In other words, what in this statement that was fabricated by DNO? If you do not like what was said then get upset with Austrie and Skerrit who communicated their story since Austrie was representing Skerrit not only as PM but in the heart of Skerrit’s constituency.

2.Is it that you DLPites realize that your leaders are desperate to the point where not even blind supporters believe their lie?

3.Did Mr. Austrie really opened his mouth to say that they (cabinet) are very worried at the amount of travelling the PM has been doing? I understand why you laborites are trying to blame it on DNO. Is it because you all remember very clearly how a beloved late PM was on a long trip and his cabinet was worried about much travelling and when he returned to Dominica and called some of his key guys such as…..and they did not even return his call? I am very worried too.

Are you referring to Rosie Douglas? You did not complete the sentence/information. He died that same morning he returned home.
Some people are too busy to make a call, to answer a call or to return a call. Time waits for no one. Later they ave regrets.
The primary one he telephoned was in the shower and was getting ready to go to church that Sunday morning, October 1st as I recall, the Feast of St. Teresa. I remember this very well on that morning I was getting ready to go to church when someone telephoned and informed me of Rosie’s passing. I was busy but I took the time to answer the telephone and listened and speak to the person. Then said, when I return from church I will call you.
Continuing, from what I heard, he said, knowing Rosie and how he talks a lot, he will telephone him when he returned from church. I would put it in another manner, a diplomatic one, “He always has a lot to say.” This is to be expected of educated people and one who was PM who just returned from his travels and was anxious to talk to his deputy to share with him relevant information.
While in church he got the sad news that Rosie passed on soon after. It was not long after he, too, passed away. Life has a way of paying us back according to our actions, right here on this earth. Take time for others. You never know what the message would be and how important the call. Furthermore, life is short and unpredictable. Take time to answer the telephone obviously if you are at home especially if it is from someone whom you know. This is a lesson. I wonder how many people will heed it and practice it?

It depends on what being worried means. In what contex it was used. I read what DNO wrote and didn’t see anything wrong. I understood that the Carbenet was worried about the many trips the PM is taking for it may affect his health. No one wants their leader to work himself to death. Remember this govt. has lost two leaders suddenly.

“According to Austrie, the global credit crunch makes it more difficult to wait on investments and the government must take the initiative to bring in investors.”

    Sweet sounding nothing again!

Indeed three hundred new jobs may sound exiting, however, a call center remaining in business for a long time depends on the effectiveness in the service provided, and the volume of businesses participating in the services of the call center.

There are actually no particular skills to be learnt by working in a call-center; that is not considered an industry, it could be hear today; gone tomorrow.

Most call centers serve one purpose, and that is as a messenger service, where one answers a telephone, and sit in front of a computer, assuming that I bought some company product and took it home; and have difficulties understanding how it works, or why it will not operate, in the call center they will ask my name, telephone number, the name of the product for which it is likely a call center may have a specific answer programmed; which the person answering the phone can pull up on the computer and read it out to the customer.

Followed instructions which may or may not work!

Other than that they submit the customer telephone number to technical support where the product was manufactured, and the company will either instruct the person where to take the product for repairs, or a refund.

In the case of credit cards, if I discover a controversy in my account, and I call in, I do not expect someone in Dominica to resolve the problem, the bank or issuing credit card company are the source where the problem can be resolved.

The investors that should be sort at this time are those who wish to invest into industrial industries, something which roots can be planted on the island, and are not fly by night business such as a call center.

    That’s nothing!

It is very interested that Reggie is concerned about Skerrit’s travelling, what Reggie is not telling Dominicans, it is alleged, every time Skerrit travels, he is paid approximately U.S. $400 a night plus travelling tickets. Within the next twelve to fifteen months, I expect Dominicans will see more activities as regards jobs, promises, ground breaking ceremonies, increase in the Red Clinic allowances, etc. Skerrit labor Party Government must do everything possible to remain in power. Mr. Lennox Linton made a significant comment in answer to a question by a caller during his show Saturday last. He said,” everyone who has been involved in corruption will be prosecuted.” Reggie talked about Mr. Linton giving him a headache, well, it is behind headache that have headache.

Explain this ‘payment’ of U.S. $400 a night plus travelling tickets. You did not mention hotel costs for accommodation and meals and who pays for it.
Whenever dignitaries as the PM travel, they must have an allowance. Their airfare must be paid from contingency funds. He is travelling on business for Dominica. Do you expect him to travel with no funds or with a pittance?

J&T the $400 is his nightly/daily allowance for entertainment & meals. His hotel, airfare etc is covered by the treasury. By the way if he or anyone else doesn’t use that money, or any part of it, since they should at the end of their travel submit reciepts, by the law of the land said money has to be returned to the treasury coffers. Guess what this has never happened and not with labour alone. I wonder why you always comment on issues beyond your scope and Dominica.

That is a joke when we already have such a high percentage of unemployment plus all those hildren leaving school. You really do not deserve a response for this silly question. He is the PM what do you expect? PM’s travel on business for their country. There are times they must also attend conferences. If it is necessary for others to travel, they will do so. However, generally it is the PM who travels.
Learn this and do not ask such a question in future. It includes those who gave you thumbs up who, like you did not think further but only on the surface and what came to their mind.
Where I reside, the PM goes on such trips. We never hear about it until after he left the country and arrived at his destination. There are times we do not even know when he returns. We do not question where he went, the reason for it and how much money he was given. No time for pettiness unless, it is reported that he overspent and squandered taxpayer’s funds. This has not yet occurred with the PM’s I know, in the past and the present one of this country.
Accord your PM this respect. His travels are for the benefit of the country. You do not have to question his every move/trip out of the country unless you have nothing to do with your time and to state on DNO.

Can the Government in Dominica take an example from SVG. By taking a bold move, start investing in an international airport, build it and they will come, and the unemployment will be at a very low rate, look at the beautiful argyle international airport in SVG, jet bridge, escalator, elevator and full air conditioning throughout the building, and I heard PM. SKERRIT WILL BE THERE for the opening. Will be opening in just a few months, According to an excellent recent article that appeared in the
Baltimore Post, the SVG Government is offering significant tax concessions and other benefits for investors to develop a number of sites throughout the thirty two Grenadines chain. These include Mount Wynne (a 400-acre site for a hotel and 18 hole golf course), Young Island (13-acre site for a 30 room boutique hotel), Saint Hilaire (45-acres) and Park Estate (600-acres) both on Bequia, Isle a Quarte (376-acres), Balliceaux (320-acres), Chatham Bay near Union Island (99-acres) and Frigate Island (16-acres).

Even in a recessionary period, greatly improved air access will heighten interest in any of these new developments and ones currently in progress, like Canouan; which includes a 150 berth yacht marina reportedly costing US$150 million alone.

So SVG build an international Airport to sell out their whole island chain to the highest bidder??? Not what i call solid investment. Jobs are created then all profits go overseas. Those clowns in this failed, greedy and corrupt government are sounding so ridiculous and preposterous! They promised prior to the 2009 election AN EMPLOYMENT AGENCY,A MONTHLY AMOUNT $$$$$$$ TO UNEMPLOYED MOTHERS,5OO JOBS IN ONE DAY…The lazy and greedy cabal delivered nothing other than hardship on the people. Skerrit snubbed the people, constructed a $27 000 000.00 State Devil, instead of creating sustainable jobs for the hungry, took a loan from China to employ Chinese nationals, and contemptuously ignored Dominicans of all walks of life to eat bread in their own country. Now election is on the horizon, he and the man who was trained in the jungles of Guyana, are coming up /out with the same sort of shenanigans. How does a call centre impact seriously on the economic development of Dominica?

The direct impact is money in your pocket to increase personal consumption. And, where does this consumption go? To the merchants who import goods and services.

    • August 20, 2013

Somewhat. But it also goes to rent and utilities, which is local, some food and drink which is local, taxes (bad, but at least they’re local). Even when buying imported products it still means more jobs for local shopkeepers, drivers, and fellows at the port.

So assuming it actually happens, with that sort of multiplier effect, three hundred jobs of that sort can be felt in an economy as small as Dominica’s. Besides, it’s pretty tough to argue that it would be worse than not having three hundred more jobs!

In the USA the Government boast of any number of new jobs cause every new job cuts down the unemployment rate, but the possibility of 300 jobs is a sin to Dominicans who by the way are so patriotic, not realizing that if their party wins the next election they would have the same task and headache to bring in jobs to citizens. Why cant we for once see past our colors and welcome the possibility and hope that it becomes a reality for the sake of our nation???? Why do we want to see more unemployment just to cry down labor and too blind to see it affects all a wee. I wonder???

Cabinet is” worried” about all of the traveling done by the PM??? Anyways, hope his latest bid comes to fruition cause Lord knows there are more than 300 people who need jobs!

    • August 20, 2013

How can the Gov’t create secure Jobs…People get secure jobs and they still steal from the company; do stupid things to get fired; or just up and quit..There are people at the Call Center who have built houses, bough vehicles, send their children to school. Stop crying and get up and help the country move forward.

Dominicans need to rewind back to the last election caampaign, listen to the nonesense diatribe from Austrie. How much jobs were created then and now, where was the millions he Austrie spoke about? guess it all went to him and comrades. expect to hear lots more of these election talk of Prime minister travelling looking for jobs, thats was the same old talk of the past, not sure if Austrie would be successful in convincing a social patner with such old talk of the past he need to get some new lines

I agree Mr Austrie, you are worried about the PM’s fruitless travels. Wasting taxpayers money and coming back with empty promises all the time. We have had so may call centre promises from you guys. Should we hold our breath this time. Stop fooling the people once and for all,

No my boy. keep on breathing. You have held your breath so many times only to be forced to breathe after the projects became a reality – Windsor Park Stadium, Night Landing, Moroocan Hotel, Scholarship to Cuba, Venezuela and Lybia, West Coast Road, new State House, sparkling new State College facility, removal of wrecks from Portsmouth bay; Melville Hall Roseau Road, coffee project, abbatoir, west coast water project – just name it. you held youu breath each time these were announced, but you soon began breathing. So go on breathing as usual.

how much of this money had an impact on dominica economy howmuch of this money went into dominica hands.if u can show proof that about 30% of all that project money went into domincan hands or bank account then dominicans can vote for DLP.remember where the money went to and dominicans have to pay the loan.it is the same as you taking a loan from the bank to build your home and the bank provides the people(its friends) to build the house when your son, brothers, uncles, friends, and family are some of the best builders in your town.and they still have to help u pay the loan

And to add to that when listening to some staff the current call centre and the treatment they are receiving at the hands of these people it is disheartening that nothing is being done to enhance the work life of these employees. Where’s your input on maintaining a healthy workforce and human resource

One does not need a degree in Economics to be convinced of that fact. Sir Venner aside, even one with a low intellectual threshold like Mammy knows that.

I have long been referring to this country run by Skerrit and his gang as a FAILED STATE. Broken institution, corruption to the maximum, deception, state institutions under manners, parl rep cops. To me the only solution is to vote these fakes and phonies out of office.
Give Linton a go at the Prime Minister ship.

What you and Mammy must realize it that whereas everyone is entitled to their opinion they are not entitled to their own facts.
Whereas Mammy must be applauded for her unwavering support and loyalty to the DLP, this is not a signal of her “intellect” or lack thereof.

Moreover, the argument is not about the size of Mammy’s cranium or her age. No one is disrespecting the woman. It is about her lack of ability to think independently, objectively, sensibly, rationally, reasonably, practically and intelligently because of her staunch support of a PM— not even sure it is support for the DLP. As she herself has stated her inability to think clearly and intelligently was evident from the tender age of 16 when she first got pregnant and proceeded to have 10 children thereafter until government had to come to her assistance.

And then he will tell them how much to pay us too right? That they cannot pay us more than the civil servants even if the company is willing to do so… Stick it up a dark place

    • Really!
      August 20, 2013

Ungrateful!!! Working in a call center and one expects to be paid more than the civil servants!? So if you don’t get paid more than a civil servant, then you would tell Skeritt to “stick it up in a dark place”! Wow! Unbelievable!

I worked in a reputable call centre, one of the best cruise line, and the pay is medium wage. I was grateful for just having a job and of course I have moved on. Be grateful . And the person who wrote that stupidness maybe don’t even have a high school education and want to be paid more than the civil service.
