About twenty young people from the Kalinago Territory are currently participating in a Youth Entrepreneurship Workshop geared at paving the way for providing employment opportunities for them.

Speaking to Dominica News Online Community Youth Officer and coordinator of the worskshop, Natasha Green, said the workshop will be centered on skills which are somewhat native to the Kalinago people.

These include canoe building, basket weaving, drum making and bow and arrow making.

According to Green the workshop is a way of giving the Kalinago youth the chance to learn a skill which can in turn serve as a source of income for them in the future.

“Sometimes if young people are not educated and do not have training in a practical field they have no alternatives,” she stated. “We have the resources available to us, we have the resource people in our community who are skilled or trained in those areas, so we are trying to see how we can further our young people and help them develop the skills.”

Green pointed out that the workshop is also geared at encouraging trainees to get involved in the craft industry.

“We want to help them build their business and get involved in mass production to market their products a bit more and explore other markets outside of Dominica,” she stated.

During the workshop participants will interact with local business owners, professionals and resource people from organizations such as the Dominica Arts and Craft Association.

“During this four day training they will get to interact with professionals and find out what opportunities exists for them. At the end of the workshop based on the interest expressed, they will be trained to develop their skills,” she said.

The workshop is being done free of charge to the participants and is being hosted by the Ministry of Carib Affairs.

It began on April 22 and ends on April 25.
