Late salary payments plague workers at DSC

Letang

Late salary payments is among issues said to be facing workers at the Dominica State College (DSC).

Employees are also concerned that the DSC board of governors has not been meeting regularly. According to Thomas Letang, General Secretary of the Dominica Public Service Union, they have not met since July.

The Dominica State College was established in 2002 with the aim of becoming the premier tertiary educational institution in Dominica and providing access to college education for all locals who are eligible.

A meeting with staff on Wednesday is expected to set the course for how the issues will be addressed.  The meeting will make clearer, the seriousness of workers’ concerns but “it’s a lot of issues,”  Letang said.

Letang pointed out that there are “concerns with regard to their salary, with regard to deductions not being paid on time, people have lost their jobs while others have replaced them”.

when people do not know what is happening they should SHOUT THE HELL UP. The tuition which the government says should not be increased cannot meet all the expenses plus the salaries of the employees. So the government since they want to dictate the tuiton should meet the salaries and tell the college to meet the other expenses. All who are talking their salaries are paid on time and so are their salary deductions. College workers have their responsibilities too.

We are suffering up here! We are fed up! Salaries are paid late. There is no support from the president. The conditions are worsening. We have been complaining for years and nothing is being done. Some contracts are ending in May and these lecturers have to fend for themselves for the rest of the summer. We love to teach, but bills have to be paid.

All Teachers have to do is report to work sit and do not teach until they get paid….That’s easy, they re repoting to work. all the have to say they did not have money for breakfast so they do not have energy to teach….that is understandable.

I just got a call, union members of PWC and DSC will be meeting with Mr. Letang at the PSU this afternoon to ask him the hard questions concerning their representation…hmmmm DNO you should send a reporter there I myself will be there for sure!!!

    • November 17, 2011

Mr Letang has forgotten to tell us the names of the members of Board of Governors.

When the DSC was formed, the employees never got a chance to do a poll to decide who represents them. Mr Letang should know that would have been the best thing to do. He is leading without ever being given a mandate.

The college is indeed in dire straits financially and something needs to be done. If I were government, instead of build a new college, I would try to see how I can improve the salaries and working conditions as they are now THEN look at the possibility of building a new college. I would NOT build a college in Stockfarm, the land fill smells, the aesthetics of the general area leaves alot to be desired – its just not the place to put a spanking new college. Where will we put the basket ball court and all the other sporting facilities? Do we actually think?
Then, the students they ‘send ‘ to us can barely write well. There is no such thing as univeral college education – college is intended to separate the ‘sheep from the goat'(so to speak). But the politicians want to say ‘in 1999 only 250 students were admitted and now we have over 2000…’ and this begs the question WHAT ABOUT QUALITY OF OUR GRADUATES? And this is my biggest problem, really, not salary (well that’s me!!!)I want to know that when I am done with a student, that student is CAPABLE AND COMPETENT.

But isn’t Mr. Letang on the Dominica State College Board of Governors? Isn’t that contradictory? He falls under the management of the College. Mr. Letang you need to be honest with yourself and then the people. Is that the first time you hearing about those people problems? What have you brought to the Board on their behalf? Or are you just attending the meetings for the check at the end of every meeting?

Is this the “NEXT LEVEL” that this government promised??? 17 days into November and PWC employees cannot get paid for October wages and salaries and now we hearing about DSC. What nonsense is dat??? The bank froze my account because my loan payment was late and has been late constantly for over 6 months, now I cannot even touch $1 of my savings. People saying is lie I lying when I tell them that but they don’t know the struggle we going through at PWC. Last week minister for PWE&P asked us to make the sacrifice…again and wait for our salary but is he making a sacrifice???? I am certain he, his brother and all the other ministers getting their salaries on time, every month. Not one of them wife or children or concubine suffering!!! Does he know what it is to be drinking sugar water for days and having to credit everything including school fees, lunch and bus rides? Does he know what it is to watch your children faces and cry secretly because you don’t know where the next meal coming out? Does he know what it is to buy $5 lights and turn off the fridge because u cannot afford to keep it on? Does he know what it is to have Dowasco cut off your water and be carrying from the neighbor? Does he know how it feels to have the landlord threatening to throw you out because you cannot pay your rent? And all of this happens because you work hard all day, everyday and cannot get your money when month end reach.

I fed up!!! I fed up!!! I fed up!!!

and what hurting me more is that the media barely shinning light on those situations. Where are all the in-depth analysis? When it was the pastor BJ story it was on air for over 2 weeks, the entire nation knew what was going on…we had all the details.

Come on folks, we are your brothers and sisters, your friends and family. What good for 1 good for all. “ALL SHALL EAT” or rather ALL SUPPOSE TO EAT!!!

Dr. Peters, you have a long, hard road ahead of you to remedy the problems that plague the DSC. However, as a lecturer at the DSC I believe you are capable and the majority of the staff is in full support of your efforts. Looking forward to working together to improve the college!
    June 21, 2010
hey DSC lecturer, I am also a lecturer, Why don’t we wait and see? we said the same thing about the two last Presidents and what did the accomplish. ABSOLUTELY NOTHING but talk. Talk is cheep, I am interested in action. What about the lack of computers for students and staff, classroom space a library , no equipment in the labs among other things

    • stupsssssssssss
      November 17, 2011

it would be nice that the lectures can source some form of donation(maybe from their almer matter of something) or some form of fund raising groups to buy compter and other supllies..as a fromer student i always find it usles/null and void that teachers and students would complain about these things..when they can make the change..and its that kind of mentality that give a dont care society eg…a HOLE in d road close to their house..they would wait for the govenrmnet to fix it until a foot break..dont wait!..it can be avoided..it only take two people to fix it and more..so if you dont like talk do your part(raise fund for the computers)..its not just being a lecturer its more..

I have been at the DSC even before it was the DSC and things have never been so bad, no money to pay lecturers, but the President is traveling all over, and no one knows, we only find out after the fact. We are all working under trying conditions and are doing s for the students. And suddenly we see an advertisement for Registrar? why? what’s is wrong with the efficient young individual that is in the position, why is he being removed? WE seem to be making only backward steps.
No money but the President’s assistant has an assistant, new security- his personal friend, remember when he cam he wanted a driver, well he finally got him in the door. What else and who else is coming?
NO HR, no recourse for lecturers, lecturers given 9 month contracts who have worked at the College for over 3 years and who were supposed to be permanent. These are only a few

And they will want him back but for his own sake i hope he have the good sense to tell them fight their own battle because none of them can do the work he is doing and none of them will be able to neither will they find such a good replacement. I wish them well in their future endeavors.

DSC making nuff money to pay workers $300 for tuition and exams and course not yet even included. DSC have over 1000 students muliply each student by 500 minimum. Do the math. DSC needs to come again. workers revolting, lectures and students next, because the whole environment not learning and educational ready, 4 fans in a classroom, none not working and if 1 or 2 works 4 days in the week it never have electricity, lets not forget the bathrooms seldomly is there water in the college. but the administration dem well fix up but with out the students they r nothing so they better treat their employees right.

Do the Maths. 300.00 for an entire semester (15 credits). How much can the lecturers get? Give us a comparison of other education facilities right here in Dominica.

Suprise am reading this article as it relates to the concerns from staff at DSC, it was just two days ago that one of the big wigs Dr. Peters was encouraging enterpreunership form those graduating from a program or entering the program, and one of the basic tenets of enterpreunership is paying your bills on time, and in constant communication with clients, yet the words from his mouth bears no meaning

That’s a shame!! The Minister for Employment, Trade, Industry and Diaspora Affairs wants to cut back on import duty on “certain juices” while the govt is unable to pay salaries. What is he doing to expand the employment base so we can collect more income tax and social security contributions?

By the way, are the Chinese and French road contractors paying income taxes and social security contributions? If not, why not? Every employee in the country should!!

Late salary for DSC may be good too because it will shed some light on what “1979” had been saying all along about the situation at the Public Works Department.[He cracked me up on that “42nd of October and no salary at PWD”].

And? Mr. Letang and the DPSU has become a complete waste of time. Mark my words, whatever they] government says is what will happen even if it appears that the DPSU is fighting it. Like many others, the DPSU and it leadership are all part and parcel of the grand scheme. Letang needs to find a new job for himself.
