LIAT introduces security surcharge

liatLIAT has implemented a security surcharge on tickets in response to rising security demands and spiraling security costs.

The new security surcharge of US$1.25 per one way trip applies to all passengers, including children and infants, on all LIAT flights.

Heightened airline and airport security over the last 10 years has resulted in rising security demands on airlines. Additional security measures at many airports have been introduced including extra baggage searches and increased security around aircraft while on the ground.

Over the past several years security costs have been climbing and LIAT has been absorbing these costs in an effort to cushion the effects on its customers. With the introduction of the security surcharge, LIAT hopes to recoup some of the additional security costs.

LIAT takes the safety and security of its customers and employees very seriously and appreciates your understanding in the current circumstances.

The carrier joins more than 100 airlines worldwide which have introduced similar charges since 2001.

The only way to stop this blatant arrogance is to put my money where mouth is. I was planning to visit DA in October travelling with LIAT, I have change my mind and now will travelling to Guadeloupe via Air France and then to DA.

In the market place customer is “king”. They can choose where there are options, consequently ensuring that those suppliers/providers that are ineffective, inefficient, disrespectful, dishonest and don’t seem to give a damn will perish.

So fellow visitors to DA I advise you do the same, but leave your comments noting the decision you have made at the Melvile Hall airport or write to LIAT. I am pretty sure a drop in passenger uptake will force LIAT to reverse that decision.

Some may say “Oh, it is only $1.25” and that is exactly what LIAT is hoping, they must know that this dishonesty is really taking the $%&*.

Good idea. Even coming from the U.K. try booking on AirCaraibe (cheaper than Auir France) and fly from London City airport on City Jet direct to Orly airpot in Paris. Then take the ferry to Roseau at your lesisure. You can even afford to stay overnight in Guadeloupe and Martiniqe and do some delicous shopping without worrying about being overweight on your luggage and you arrive in Dominica fresh and relaxed.. Make Liat suffer for their arrogance.

PS. This way you also avoid that torturous journey from Melville Hall to Roseau.

Liat again, they have a service charge on every ticket that one purchases, now they are putting security charge. Governments of all the island provide security at the airports so what racket is that with Liat. US$1.25 , thats nothing compair to what Liat now have to enforce in line of security , overheard them saying that there will be no last minute check-in again because of security , they also now have to do random search just befor you board the plane, flights now will be closed by the system 45 minutes befor the plane arrive, so all the high profile people who coming airport when plane on ground and when they dont get on plane , they reporting staff to head office ,they better now come early or dont go and sit in resturant until plane land then take all day going through immigration and security to delay plane then turn around and report staff again , or have us calling liat and say we stuck in mud or road block for an hour, oh you cannot make threats and fly anymore , they have to put a code in their system on your name that other airlines and security agencies can see and check you out anytime you fly again , $1.25 is for all that security stress on you

    • Malgraysa
      July 4, 2013

    • ME
      July 4, 2013

Informer, sorry but the security has gone way overboard. It is ridiculous and the a major portion of the ticket price is fees and taxes and the ticket already includes for government security in those fees and taxes, so LIAT is probably pocketing this to help pay for their new planes!

        Hello?

  22. Justice and Truth
    July 3, 2013

Additional costs for airline passengers including overall inconvenience when flying has also been the result of terrorists actions and to deter them from further harming passengers.
Airlines and governments have expended additional costs to implement strict security measures for the safety of passengers.
This should get all law-abiding people extremely angry against those people who cannot live in peace and harmony with other people of the world.
Some governments, their troops and volunteers have gone to those countries to assist them to become democratic ones, to improve their lifestyle and yes safety and the radicals have refused, instead continuing to wage war on innocent people, also their own nationals.
Increased airline and security costs which include security staff are the result of this, a price we are all paying for fear of their further atrocities and will continue to pay as costs escalate.
Sadly, the world is not the same since 9/11. Airline traveling has become more expensive and is not as fun-filled and safe as it was prior to that fateful day.
As I am aware of, one day God will mete out his just recompense to those who commit those crimes. Their day is coming.

    • frabo
      July 4, 2013

Why is it that they stop serving food (to full your belly) on these airlines? security reasons?

    • July 5, 2013

We should not have to pay a black cent for additional security or whatever. Our Government sells our passports to criminals who could not have gotten passports in their own country. When we make ourselves available to criminals we put ourselves at RISK, and we still have to pay for that. Come on. I say, fly other airlines, take the ferry, or those at home stay there and those that are not stay where YOU are.

NO ADDITIONAL FEES. THE AIRFARE IS EXPENSIVE ENOUGH AS IT IS.

I thought when Skerrit gave LIAT my tax money, things would be better.

  27. ROSEAU VALLEY
    July 3, 2013

Whereas any additional tax, fee or surcharge is burdensome and can potentially have a negative impact on the travelling public – the tourism industry by extension, the new security surcharge of US$1.25 per one way trip is not unreasonable under the circumstances, considering the new travel environment and demands of the international community.

LIAT is in the process of replacing/upgrading its fleet and making improvements to its overall service. The reality is that many of the taxes/fees etc that are applied to LIAT’s ticket are beyond LIAT’s control. They are taxes/fees imposed by our governments in the region.

Dominica was the latest country to acquire a seat on the Board of LIAT. PM Skerrit said that with Dominica on LIAT’s board, we now have a stake in LIAT’s management and decision making process. Dominica can now be at the table making decisions that affects inter-regional travel and the impact on Dominicans. Therefore, our government was part of this decision. Even though, we hear of a “no new taxes budget” we better be prepared for increases in government imposed fees, levies, duties, surcharges and licenses in the 2013-2014 budget

    Respectfully
    Roseau Valley

    • Malgraysa
      July 4, 2013

With respect Roseau Valley, I doubt anyone is irritated by the amount charged. It is the way it is done. In the most insenstive and tactless manner.
Why not absorb it in the ticket price? Nobody would have said anything, trust me. Very poorly done by Liat but then, what do they know about marketing?

PS. I agree with you re. the “indirect” taxes, which will see a hike plus additional new ones.
Dominica is already a country where only the rich can afford to live with any degree of comfort.

Preposterous! Security is the responsibility of the Ports’ Authority of the respective jurisdictions and not the airline. What unfortunate timing!

Only four days ago, on 29 June, Richard Sealy, the Minister repsonsible for Transport& Tourism in the Barbados Govt., (which happens to be LIAT’s largest shareholder)repeated the much-worn mantra for tregional support for the airline:
“I strongly encourage those who benefit from LIAT’s services to give the same support which they have for years been putting behind the foreign carriers”.

Well Mr. Sealy, you may see LIAT as a social service, provided for the benefit of the citizens for which we should be grateful and pay gladly without making a fuss. After all, the way the shareholders portray the airline is that it is doing us a favour, is it not?
Sir, I have news for you. I am sick to the teeth with a quasi govt. outfit that enjoys its monopoly position to milk us, the public, like the proverbial cow, treating the poor animal with disdain and indifference.
It is high time you start viewing the airline from a different perspective, from the passengers’ point of view and learn to look after your milk cow with dedication, care and devotion. Only then you will deserve our support.

When will some of you comprehend the truth of what really happened and cease blaming the US? If you have any common sense, ask yourself, would the US plan and carry out such atrocities on innocent people, in their own country which killed over 3,000 Americans and caused that extent of damage and loss of property? Two of the victims who died in that inferno at the twin towers were originally from Dominica, residing in the U.S. Have a heart!
Those Muslim pilots attended a pilot school to learn how to fly a plane. They got free schooling and obviously free government social assistance. They were wicked and ungrateful people. The Media broadcasted and printed the rest of what transpired.
Anyway, they went to their eternal judgment. On Judgment Day we may know where their souls are for what they did including their hatred, wickedness and ingratitude.
Our God is a God of love, peace and unity. He will never send anyone to commit atrocities and murder his children.
If your family or friends were in those planes when they struck the twin towers, the Pentagon and another ended up in a field because of the resistance of the passengers on board (sadly, they all died), you would not be making such an uncaring, accusing and insensitive remark. I hope you never bring this up again. It is too hurtful for especially the family of 9/11 victims and others who knew them. You have no common sense whatsoever. God will punish you.
