The Government of Japan has made a $1.5-million investment in the fisheries sector of Dominica.
The project involves the replacement of refrigeration equipment at the fisheries complexes in Roseau and Marigot.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Fisheries, Harold Guiste, gave details of the project.
“The [existing] equipment is still working but based on discussion with our colleagues from Japan, it has reached its expected lifespan and they would therefore like to replace the equipment with new ones so we are going to get new freezers and a blast freezer at the Roseau complex will be converted to a normal one. Chillers and ice machines will also be forthcoming to enhance our post-handling of fish for marketing in a wholesome manner,” he said.
Guiste revealed that some level of trade has begun in Marigot that will require top quality fish for export.
“Fish is very highly perishable and we need to make sure that all standard and phytosanitary standards are met so that when anything leaves this country, it is of the best quality to match our nature island image.”
I just hope they will make sure to adhere to the Montreal Protocol on Ozone Depleting Substances to which Dominica is a Party. Dominica is currently under mandate to phaseout HCFCs and has a phaseout schedule. We need to remain compliant so that the RAC Sector is not severely affected. Ahhh jahhh talk to each other big government agencies.
Don\’t go spending the money on fishers of men for de labor party!!!!
When is fond st Jean gonna get a half decent fisheries, which they should have had a long time ago. They never spend a penny in this constituency If they can get away with it. No lie correct me if I am wrong.
I guess as shown by the CBI program, Dominica is such a desperately poor and unscrupulous country that it will take money from thieves, bandits and those who are hell-bent on destroying the earth and our seas as we know them.
Since the Fukushima disaster in 2011, each and every year, Japan has been dumping more than 50 cubic miles of deadly radioactive waste into the Pacific: http://www.agreenroadjournal.com/2014/03/fukushima-200-million-gallons-of-highly.html
This means that Japan is giving birth to a deadly area of radioactive contamination in our seas of an area bigger than the size of Dominica year and year on.
With friends like them, the world does not needs enemies?
Something is definitely wrong in fisheries in Dominica if I can approach a vendor for fish at the Roseau market and was quoted $12 a pound. There seems to be no oversight when Japan is investing millions into our fisheries, they seem to care more than we do. We cannot afford fish at the fisheries, it\’s out of control.
Only if the Japanese knew the net impact of their money on price of fish locally. What is this fella doing anyway, Just bragging about free money?
inept party hack…dont want to hear you
Why doesnt Fond Cole have a proper fisheries facility? Why is the fish always sold on the side like that? What standards are being implemented? Do we have any standards left?
