More jobs added to gov’t job program

The government is to expand a program that will be providing jobs to residents in the wake of Hurricane Maria, Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has announced.

Earlier this month, Skerrit announced that the cabinet has taken the decision to create 1,100 jobs to engage those made redundant and displaced by the hurricane.

Skerrit said 100 more jobs will be added to the program.

“We’ve taken the decision to bring it to 1,200 jobs in the public service and this is a direct response to the fallout due to the passage of Hurricane Maria,” he said.

He said these jobs will be for those who lost their jobs in the private sector and it might take some time before the private sector gets on its feet again.

“Several of our brothers and sisters in Dominica would have lost their jobs from the private sector,” he noted. “If the private sector firm is not operational, we don’t expect them to keep staff for any period of time. Some of the private sector firms will take some time to get back on their feet: they have to reconstruct, they have to rebuild, they have to restock, some of them, they are still waiting for their insurance money …”

The Prime Minister said a decision was taken to “maintain the dignity and the sanity of these people who were affected by the hurricane.”

The program is expected to begin in March with funds from the island’s CBI Program.

I am happy people are getting Jobs ,that’s a good thing. Dominicans looking so ugly these Days ,it’s a shame . Some people have top Jobs and they look like a vagrant . WHY.

The concept of government helping the citizens of the country is not a bad one. This is why we nominate them as our representatives to form the government.
What I have a problem with is the way they go about trying to help people. You can’t just create 4000 jobs out of thin air, especially as a Small Island Developing State (SIDS) which has been severely damaged by Maria and not expect an adverse economic effect such as a larger wage bill. And by the way, we have got to find monies for these jobs.
And secondly, most of these jobs if not all may be low skilled jobs which is likely to pay below the taxable threshold of $25000 per annum. So that means that 1200 persons are unlikely to contribute to the treasury even though the government has employed them.
That means that the only way the government is likely to get anything back is through indirect tax.
The government should focus on getting the country back to a state of economic vibrancy so people could go back to work, not NEP.

I suppose they hope this will spur some kind of economic activity in order to help GDP. However, the country needs to focus on production and exports by extension. Our trade deficit last, this and next year will be high. For the amount of food and goods that have been imported vs the amount of goods exported will increase/

1200 new jobs created by the government after hurricane Maria.
Over 2000 persons employed under the NEP back in May 2017
    https://dominicanewsonline.com/news/homepage/news/general/nep-hits-2000-douglas-says/
And now we have the government propping up Clear Harbour.

I can go on and on but I think anyone reading this will get the point. Add these employment figures to with the public sector employment figures and we can safely assume that the government is the employer of most Dominicans.

Now,is this economic madness or economic suicide? Choose your poison.
