New airline service to replace American Eagle

St. Croix-based Seaborne Airline announced today (Tuesday) that effective April 1, 2013, it will be operating non-stop services from Luis Muñoz Marín Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico to Melville Airport in Dominica.

The route will be serviced by the 34-seat Saab turboprop aircraft operated by two pilots and a flight attendant and includes in-flight service and a lavatory.

This should be welcome news for many Dominicans who have been worried after American Eagle announced that it would suspending flights from San Juan in 2013 to a number Caribbean destinations as it attempts to shave US$75-million per year in labor costs.

San Juan serves as a major hub for travelers coming to Dominica from many north American and other international destinations.

The airline also announced effective Monday, February 18, 2013, that it has launched its first interline arrangement with a major carrier – American Airlines – which will make connections from all of Seaborne cities at San Juan even easier.

The company said baggage will transfer between Seaborne and American on the ramp at San Juan, as opposed to having to be rechecked with the other carrier, and soon Seaborne will be issuing boarding passes on American flights.

Seaborne also recently relocated to Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport to be close to American in Concourse D and soon, all Seaborne flights will be displayed and sold on AA.com as part of this new arrangement.

Seaborne Airlines President, Gary Fost, said the move into Dominica is part of the airlines expansion into the Caribbean. “These additions are part of Seaborne’s rapid expansion across the Caribbean, with growth focused on providing new connecting service at San Juan, PR,” he said. “While Seaborne is capitalizing on changes in the Caribbean marketplace, much of the growth in jobs is taking place in the U.S. VirginIslands where planes, pilots and flight attendants are based.”

The service to Dominica is one among three announced by Seaborne on Tuesday.

Seaborne Airlines is one of the largest employers in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Named the “Best Small Air Transport” serving the U.S. Virgin Islands, every year since 2007, it has operated for more than 19 years in the Caribbean, carrying almost 2.5 million passengers.

People, “emancipate yourselves from mental slavery, none but ourselves can free out minds.” As long as you perceive yourselves as beggars, you will always get the handouts. I would certainly love to vacation in my birth place, when I, do in fact, take a vacation. But, I’m not flying on those punddle jumpers to get there.

Oh mercy, just build that international airport… and they will come.

But really, we need better infrastructure too. But if we can get some companies to set up shop in Dominica (provide jobs, products, services), then more people will have more reasons to come, which will give more airlines more reasons to fly more people here!

It’s not just building the airport, but you have to give people reasons to want to fly here. Right now the demand to fly to Dominica is just not there. It’s not necessarily that Melville Hall is bad, it’s just that other than Ross and locals coming, there is not much reason to come.

So, Dominica needs a comprehensive development plan. The way we do stuff is so haphazard and it shows in the results.

In the end it’s the free marketplace… supply and demand. Dominican government think they can grow the country by doing everything. They can’t and should be a facilitator. Investing in LIAT is not necessarily gonna bring more flights in… at the end of the day LIAT must make a profit. So does every other airline.

Demand, demand, demand. We have a unique product, but it must be developed beyond the mediocrity that is so rampant in Dominica. We must improve nature sites as well as access to them, widen/straighten our roads, incentives for more foreign schools like Ross (increase the population, thereby increase the tax base), incentives for service/financial companies, light/electronic manufacturing, and more. We have to make people WANT to come to Dominica, and in effect we will drive the number airline flights to our shores. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

DNO, you are beating DBS with the news hands down every time! On the six o’clock news tonight DBS announces that the Govt. (Mr. Douglas) may announce a new airline connection to replace American Eagle to Puerto Rico shortly when you have already confirmed that yesterday afternoon! Keep up the good work, we appreciate it.

    This is 2013
This is only a 34 seater. How many flights a week?
In any case unless u have more than 3 flights coming in per day less people will be coming in whether we like it or not. 34 seats for Ross Students alone. What about de rest of us?

Why isn’t our Tourism Minister the one making that announcement anyway?

I am not prepared to sing any praises for a downgrade.

Let me say Thank You to Seaborne for helping us Dominicas out.

Alas, what we need is an International Airport. I hate logging luggage, hopping from one plane to another or island hopping. We would have more people visiting if the flight was direct. I thought the government was working on an international airport, what happened; is that the Chinese next project??? Just asking.

  11. Hate ignorance
    February 20, 2013

Its better than nothing but its still a step backwards. It means that persons coming in through Puerto Rico will have to leave some of their luggae behind hoping that they get it later,34-seater means less room for luggage another stress . All we needed was an international airport or one long enough to accommodate larger aircrafts. They dont even have to call it international airport if they have a problem with it being named so . hmmm

    • February 21, 2013

Hi, I do support what you say in one aspect. The Government should lengthened the runway ofthe airport and the planes/ jets should come in over the sea. I came home from NYC on American Airlines for carnivl and when I transferred in PR the AM Eagle had at most thirty people on the flight.. Now this is during carnival and we cannot sell out the flight so how would an Internatial Airport change th number of people traveling to DA. Why can’t Liat or Caribbear Airlines replace American from Puerto Rico.

I looked at Seaborne’s carry on policy and I also called customer service and from what they are telling me they will only allow the passenger to carry a wallet onto the plane. I am wondering what people who travel on this aircraft put their passport, travel documents, cell phone in when they travel. If anyone has personal experience with that or can shed some light, let me know so I can plan accordingly. Thanks.

The call and the cry now is about Jet blue; sometimes we need to know what we are talking about before we start talking simply to make people believe we know!

If our problem in Dominica is an International Airport; that should dictate we need an International Airport in order to accommodate lager aircrafts used in this modern twenty-first century, we are talking about passenger Jets flying in the sky these days carrying hundreds of people, almost a thousand people.

The talk of Jet blue, is total nonsense, since Jet blue operates a fleet of Jets carrying more than a hundred people at a time. Jet Blue is based in Long Beach California approximately twenty miles or less South of Los Angeles, as far as I know there are lots of Dominicans living there if they have the guts perhaps one of them can go and take some pictures of Jet Blue fleet of aircrafts, and make them available so the gullible can compare then to what LIAT and this new airline has to offer Dominica.

I am not feeling sorry for the state in which we find ourselves, as far as air transportation is concerned; our dilemma is all due to backwardness, a the stupidity of our people the politicians are the culprits here.

We allow the politicians to think for us; they make very bad, and stupid decisions, such as shutting down projects that were started by a former government which had recently lost an election. Indeed the UWP had an International Airport in the first phase of construction, when a coalition government formed of members from the labor party, and the DFP, decided that Dominica does not need an International Airport, because Antigua and Barbados had one already!

Such are the stupid comments they made in addition to saying the former prime minister wanted to build the airport so that they could import more drugs into the country, to crown it all they claimed the project was too expensive, and we could not afford it, however, they were quick to all Gonzalez of St. Vincent fool them into the idea that all Dominica needed was to refurbish the out dated Melville Hall Airport, and install landing lights on the Runway, and that should suit our purpose.

What Gonzalez actually advised the Dominica Labor Party to do is set our country a hundred years backwards, while at the same time he was negotiating for the construction of an International Airport in St. Vincent which will become operative in the interim.

    How dumb are we?

The government of Dominica in power right now will never build an International Airport in the country all because of some stupid political campaign promises that it they would shut the construction of the International Airport down in favor for landing light on a municipal airport which is not serving any purpose right now as the yellow Elephant sits!

Too late for me to correct the errors, by inserting the missing words, in my submission above:

” amethyst” don’t be ignorant, if you do not understand what is debated just read until you understand and say nothing!

Jetblue operates a fleet of Jet aircrafts which Melville Hall Municipal Runway cannot accommodate; it is even foolish to believe that what is said here will attract Jet Blue attention, and get them to consider flying to Dominica.

      That’s not how it works!

Dominica cannot attract any larger passenger carrier besides LIAT and the thirty-five seater thing which they recently introduce to the people of our country, and perhaps the other mediocre thing out of Guadeloupe which Blackmoore claims he recently issued a license to fly to Dominica.

The bottom line is simply this, without an International Airport, your dream of JetBlue, or anything which remotely resembles Jetblue will never land and take off in the nature island.

If our wish is to remain primitive; to remain the nature island of the world according to Ian Douglas, we should all just stop babbling because nothing will develop out of this talk.

It seems as if the government of Dominica has everybody twisted around their small fingers, they have 90% of the people walking around as zombies that’s why they are doing anything that will bring some progress to the country.

For the crap Blackmoor spoke today, he should be incarcerated, and the keys to his cell thrown in the ocean between Dominica and Guadeloupe!

Hi, Jet Blue has more flights from the east coast to the Caribbean than from the west coast. Ok keep hiding in California and keep blaming out Government for everything. I would like to know how many times a year you travel to sweet Dominica. Also since you complain about everything in Dominica. What solutions are you suggesting to fix all the thing you complain about. Also you aren’t the only educated Dominican who is living abroad and please stop being unprofessional to others.

      • February 22, 2013

Tony don’t expect me to visit Dominica anytime soon, because if I have to sit in a thirty-five seater aircraft to come home that will never happen, that thirty-five seater is not large enough to hold my luggage and me!

If people do not blame the government for our backward state, whom shall we blame, who shall I blamed?

        You?

You are not important enough for that, all you can see is the politics, under your nose; you have no concept of what is going on in Dominica. I am not here to play politics, I could care less about you and the politicians at home, Dominica is my concern, and the rest of my family living back there.

You can pray to the politicians if you wish, I do not have to do that; I take care of me; I am dependent on myself, and I am not looking for any hand out okay!

You are caught up into so much nonsense until you are talking out of your mind. I said Jet Blue is Long Beach based, here in California, what does that have to do with flights from East coast to the Caribbean?

Well if you believe you can get JetBlue to land in Dominica get them; you will have to lay down and become a Runway so that they can land on your back, or perhaps stomach, it depends where you can take the pressure harder.

Boy, you better shut up, just shut up, and suffer your misery!

I am not suffering! If I had my way I would make all idiots vanished into oblivion oui!

        Hhahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!

By the way Tony what is unprofessional about my comments?

You see the problem with our people is that they cannot face the truth, what you are doing here is playing into the hands of the politicians ” doh talk about it” because honorable so, and so wont like it.

Well you see I am not biased, and you will never read anything from me that is catered to the taste of any politicia. And mind you I have people, very close relatives serving in the present day government, they have their ministry and all that, however, I have no desire to be a poppet on a string for anyone and make believe I am happy with the rotten backward state the the country find itself right now.

I am leaving that to you!

Some day if they have not done it yet they may even put him on one within the US. Done Dominicans just to hypocrite want it to look like it’s only to Dominica these planes fly but at every major us airports these planes are in constant use by the major airlines to reduce cost by ferrying passengers from the smaller Towns and cities even those with international airports to their main hubs. If you notice these airlines cannot afford to have their jets flying to many different destinations it’s just not profitable. so he just wants to complain and not come home. Who knows maybe he us life some of us Dominicans and can’t afford to come home.. And blaming it on the small plane.

Thanks to Mr. Skerrit! After having dumped so much money on Melvillehall in the name of night landing, which has never really begun, you have succeeded in replacing the out going AA 48 seater plane with another kite that can only hold 35 passangers and make no mistake about it, the St. Croix based airline did not take that route because of your effort Mr. Skerrite, but simply because of the hard effort from the management of Ross University. That’s is another reason why Dominicans should put you out come next election.

If thats the case then we have to forget about Jetblue and focus on those airlines that can get our passengers to Dominica not to mention more attention and some investment in the ferries and as someone mentioned below focus on negotiating the times and frequency. Very Simple.

Of course once we get arrivals up we will have more negotiating power but as of now beggars cant be choosers. We are so lucky to have this airline ready to give us a chance.

Seaborne is a small company who flew chatter flights between the U.S Virgin Islands and San Juan only. A company which i have flown with many times. I am more than proud to see this company taking the next step in add Dominica to their small list of destinations or “happy for the crumbs” as you call it, for it is a small West Indian Company trying to make a name for its self like all the big airline companies have done before they got to where they are now.

      Welcome to Dominica Seaborne!

      • February 20, 2013

Peter Parker, your sentiments are as backward as can be, it is people like you who caused Dominica to be so backward. People like you are contented to settle for anything, the less you have it is the better you feel; we are in the twenty-first century, rather than accepting the status quo, you should petition the government to move beyond a thirty-five seater aircraft, or a mediocre airline serving Dominica!

We are a laughing joke of the world, all because of our backwardness!

When are Dominicans going to learn?

How long shall it take us to realize that the colors Blue, Green, and especially Red is not benefiting the nation anything, how long will it take us to understand the duties of the government of any county main objective should be the peoples welfare; the building of our infrastructure, attracting foreign and local investors to invest in the country, and in general the industrialization of the country.

None of that is going on, our country is stagnant, our people are hurting. At this moment people should be out in the streets demonstrating in front of Government Headquarters, demanding that the government move to build an International Airport in the country.

Without such facilities, our country is not going to make one step forward; the Chines government has made that clear to the government of Dominica years ago. That was announced on DBS Radio once; before the day was over some government minister call the person who read the news disclosing what the Chines told the now Labor Party Government, and ask the announcer ” who was he working for; the government or the opposition.”

So, you see in Dominica it is not about the country, and the welfare of the people, it is all about partisan politics, and that’s what is destroying both people and country!

Do not view my comments to you as an attack on you, however, all of us in unison at this time must make our government know that we are fed-up and dissatisfied with the status quo, and it is time our nation build an International Airport, because without it one day the sun will set for all these small commuter aircrafts which the government hope will land at Melville Hall all through the night.

They made an mistake when they shut down the International Airport which the UWP actually had under construction, of which 80% of the cost of the project was finance by the government of Trinidad & Tobago, the Peoples Republic of China also contributed to it financially, also the government of Taiwan.

It is time the government climb down from its pedestal, and accept they made a bad mistake the day they chase the Trinididans who was in Dominica, working on the first phase of development of the airport!

I know that there are diehard Labor Party supporters who may read this, and wish they could assassinate me for my views here, they can take their best shot, I could care less, my country comes before politics or anything else, so if my views are not appreciated too bad, I do not care!

I prefer to loose my life for the truth, and something I believe in than nothing at all!

The existing connection from Melville Hall via St. Maarten (connection from Dominica by BVI Airways) is particularly useful and competitively priced priced.

  24. February 20, 2013

Legit here is one of the reasons people laugh at us Dominicans, and our country!

“coming to Dominica from many north American and other international destinations.”

Omit ” and other international destinations” what we have left is coming to Dominica from many North American; and we can add destinations in order for it to appear as a compete sentence.

Now in all of North America, there are only three countries:

    . Mexico

    . Canada

. The United States of America

In the event I missed some of the many other North American countries, perhaps the author of the original epilog can point out the missing countries to me.

How can one say many North American countries, when we can count them one – three on one hand?

On the other hand what difference is a thirty-five seater aircraft going to make in the life’s of our people?

When there is a change it must be for the better, and not for the worst; with an thirty-five seater aircraft the status quo remain the same, as long as there is no International Flights in and out of Dominica, the misery of traveling to and from Dominica shall remain the same!

American Eagle is leaving because it is not profitable to operate the Dominica route, if the idea is to save seventy-five million in wages that alone to me is questionable; if that is the case how come they are continuing to maintain most of their present routs specially to those islands where there are International Airports in operation.

The reason this airline is filling the gap might be because they do not have the capacity to fly internationally, and so Dominica may suite their purpose!

Not counting the cost. They have not realized that it is more expensive to fly in and out of Dominica compared to the other Caribbean Islands. St. Lucia has passed us years ago. What is our problem

baggage allowance? comfort? all these things have to be taken into consideration. This is a backward move and you all can say what allu want.so i am seriously going to leave from ny on a big airline and come to Dominica from sju on that little thing? I personally believe the government should try allocate money to start building an international airport this will attract more airlines and tourist. I guess the government do not want to go that direction just because of politics, but put politics aside and develop the country.

Like the Bobb sang, “misconceptions can mislead one man and one man can mislead a whole nation” especially into believing we do not need an international airport. All the other Caribbean islands have international airports yet this man was bringing speakers from St. Vincent and Barbados to tell us how we do not need one. The ‘not having sufficient seats for a big airport’ is a real concern but every other government works with the carriers even if is to have weekly or bi weekly flights from the mainland(UK, US, Canada, China) while other small aircrafts continue to operate daily scheduled flights. So many of us are ‘celebrating mediocrity’ like Val Bull sang with those hooray comments. This is actually a backward step in air travel. If is for me Dominica will not be seeing my face unless it is to fly out of JFK to Barbados/Antigua and connect with trusted Liat the same day. There are many ‘pros’ to having an airport built as it would facilitate business, investors and personal travel for those of us looking for a weekend getaway. But just like the promotion of the ‘Nature Isle of the World’ abroad, so too will a call for an international airport be dismissed. Something is wrong with our Dominica, and despite all what one man has done ‘in your eyes ‘that past governments did not do (in terms of roads, the elderly, free school buses, minute salary increases, the housing program, scholarships etc) we need to hold him accountability for the cost of electricity, reduced customs charges, private sector investment, transparency, CRIME, food prices and an INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT. Thank you.

Hi, this is good news for us and a specially that we won’t have to re-check our luggage or go to a different website to purchased our ticket . Thirty four seats are not a lot of seats but I never took a full flight from PR to Dominica on American Eagle. So let us support this airline and hope thing work out.

      Hi,

well you finally answer Mr Liat, and what type of acft are you going to use?jets?just to let y ou know Dash-8 are probley the most reliable aircraft that have been build, and there upgrades,if the body,or the fuselage of the acft is worn out or had it days, rebuild one, canadian planes are much more better than those britts, yes i meant the ATR,hmmmm, and the Dash-8 are more spacious, hmmmm

Ooooh and further info to all,st.barths, has a 2000 feet rwy,and they have more landings than most larger airports, with 19 seatters, lol,so u dont need a jet to bring 200 ppl on every flight,,winair has more than 15 landing on st.barths, windward exspress has ore than 10,st.barths comm, more than 20,so, imagine you can get the same type of service there,at melvinhall?

and the night landing at melvinhall, hmmmi do hope those companies have good insurance policies for ppl, cause your airport has to many obstruction limitation, thats why winair didnt want to fly during nite flight to melvin hall, the approach procedures, was to difficult, but all in all,a loaf a bread is better than non at all!

I think this is comforting news for many of us Dominicans who live abroad and had nightmares of having to go back to the horrifying days of relying on LIAT. I am disappointed however in our leadership especially the minister of Tourism who has not made an effort in resolving this matter and assuring the people of Dominica of a replacement after all the news of the American Airline ‘pull out’. We have so many cruise ships that have also taken Dominica off their destination route and nothing has been done by our so called Minister of Tourism. I would expect more from a young educated man like Mr. Douglas. Especially coming from a family of exceptionally political minded individuals. Shame on you MR Minister of Tourism. I don’t get it with the government in Dominica? Let’s us look at other Caribbean country like a multi-Island like St. Vincent, they has beautiful grenadines islands with beaches, multimillion resort and hotels. Each island have their own airport, accept Canouan, they have a jet airport on that small island with three resort. They are building an int airport on the Maine land & they have some small plane, svg airways, and they fly throughout the Caribbean islands as charters plain. The point I am making throughout all this, Dominica are one of the bigger island in the eastern Caribbean countries, but yet they lack of a better air access, don’t have a jet airport, don’t have multi rooms hotels, and you don’t hear the government speak about having or improving anything thing, hear…

I am giving the Roosevelt Skerrit led Dominica Labour Party (DLP) Government an F Grade (FAILING GRADE) for their dismal failure to build an International Airport.

I believe that the Eddison James led United Workers Party (UWP)Government deserves a P Grade (PASSING GRADE) for the enormous great strides they had made in their efforts to build an International Airport, but, we the people of Dominica fool hardy believed the accusations of the DLP and the Dominica Freedom Party (DFP)coalition that UWP was corrupt and wasting the state’s money and took away the mandate of the UWP to govern. The DLP turned around and crooked the DFP kicking them out of the coalition, and what a calamity that was for the DFP…OMG!!!

Today we know who is CORRUPT… The writing is on the wall… and no Intnernational Airport and the situation just gets worst…

Seabourne is a great little airline serving the United States Virgin Islands, British Virgin Islands, and, Puerto Rico… but wait till they start to complain about the high cost of operations into Dominica… and Dominicans this is no cause for celebration… it’s one airline with smaller seating and luggage capacity replacing another aircraft with larger seating and luggage capacity…

By the way what about the plans by the General Manager of the Dominica Air and Sea Ports Authority (DASPA) to contract to get a fleet of chinese built aircrafts for Dominica. Are those plans shelved, and, are there any chances of including it in the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed by the DLP with the People’s Republic of China (PRC)??? We need our international airport.

Why? -airlines wont fly if route is not profitable. There are simply not enough people flying in a d out of Dominica on a daily basis to warrent it.

We just don’t seem to understand the economics of the whole thing. American airlines is pulling the more cost effective service out of the region do we Dominicans really believe that with an international airport they would send more 737s to a route that was not using American eagle equipment. It would be nice to have an international airport but what is the cost and the profitability for all involved. With an international airport we may have to subsidize flights which will be an additional burden. Now as for persons talking about direct flights even within the US you sometimes have to stop over on various flights Dominica is not alone.

It’s not that people don’t travel, its more that people don’t have disposable income to travel, in Dominica there are people are living from hand to mouth and that makes up the majority of the populace, so the “travel industry” has to seriously evaluate the route of this dilemma>>>>…simple!

That is what I don’t understand. We are too reactive in Dominica. We need to be more pro-active. We need to start putting things in place to encourage people to come here and not wait for people to come and then put things in place. If we wait for that…. they will never come my friend.

Personally I dont fly home as often as I go to other islands with my vaction time beacause I dont want to spend 2 days out of my vacation time just flying trying to get home. If that 6am flight to San Juan is full I miss the connecting flight to D/ca and have to overnight on San Juan. Its wasted time for me and such a turn off.

Well, if there was an international airport , there would be more people flying in and out of Dominica. Don’t you know how chaotic it is when one has to transfer from aircraft to another aircraft and furthermore to overnight in a country which is not the country of one’s destination?

What use is an international airport if you do not have the passenger volume to keep it profitable? Would the money not be better spent on a first class hospital? A functioning hospital is needed in Dominica – and badly? I think the current procedure is that Dominicans have to sell their children in order to pay for 2nd class medical care in the US.

      Get real people?

The people responsible for closing the deal just make sure seaborne pilots educate themselves about our terrain in Dominica so the travelers can have some confidence trust n comfort with them

Oh yeah of little faith! Don’t you think that an operation with over 19 years of success in the Caribbean would not have done its homework?

Y’all can be so damn silly… So u think money would be placed on a deal of such nature without the proper investigations?? Smh this is a business where people’s lives are at stake.. I’m sure they have regulations and procedure—even test flights to make sure the route is doable for their pilots, before settling on a deal..
