New Scotiabank Country Manager for Dominica

James F. Alston

After a 30-year banking career in Scotiabank’s Domestic Banking, James F. Alston made the switch to International Banking in 2007. Five years on, the bank is pleased to announce Alston’s elevation to Country Manager for Scotiabank in the Commonwealth of Dominica.

The appointment took effect June 22, 2012, with Alston reporting to Sean Albert, Managing Director, Scotiabank, Caribbean East.

In welcoming Alston to his newest assignment, Albert said: “We are delighted to have someone of Jim’s extensive experience leading our Dominica operation. Over the years, he has built an outstanding record of success, particularly during challenging times. Not only do we value his focus on business results, Jim’s acumen for developing strong teams and guiding employees to increasingly senior positions levels of responsibility also highly recommends him to the position of Country Manager.”

An honours graduate of the University of Western Ontario, Alston is well supported by professional certification as a Personal Financial Planner (PFP) and Fellow of the Institute of Canadian Bankers (FICB). He has also completed the Canadian Securities Course.

In his most recent position, he served as Commercial Banking Manager, Scotiabank Turks and Caicos, where he increased the bank’s share of wallet among existing customers, whilst attracting new key accounts. Other assignments in branches across Ontario, Canada included stints as Account Manager, Senior Relationship Manager and Director, Commercial Banking, where, in the latter case, he successfully transitioned the operation to a new sales and service delivery platform. The move to Dominica is, however, the highlight of a career that began in 1978 when he was hired as a management trainee.

Of this appointment, Alston said: “I’m very excited for the opportunity to assume the role of Country Manager as it will expand my scope from a concentration in commercial and corporate banking to now encompass our retail operations. The team in Dominica has been very welcoming and I am happy to be working with them as we continue to build our operations here.”

Beyond banking, Alston has been as avid supporter of several business, philanthropic and sporting organisations and he is “really looking forward to experiencing some of the natural beauty of Dominica” with his wife Cindy and their three grown daughters.

Seems to me Insider, when you live in a glass house you don’t throw stones. Instead, do you want to talk about your involvement in an unauthorized investment scheme with your relatives of a financial institution on island? Do you really want to open this can of worms?

  3. September 14, 2012

Seems to me Insider, that you will continue to hate those who prosper. Hating the black sisters like that will make you more sick.. Ok sweetie? “Don’t hate me cause I’m beautiful” and you’re not. Total facial reconstruction is required for that.

Wouldn’t it be interesting to obtain a compilation of church associates, in-laws, promoted staff, relatives and friend of the transferred manager, and their associated files?

Being married does not change who a person is. One’s breed does not change. Even if one sashays in the House of God and flaunts her stuff to receive the Body of Christ, does one think that she is saved? Does one think that God is fooled? Ultimately, one accounts to only God. Think hard about the purpose of receiving Christ’s body whilst one continues to plot ugly deeds. Is one worthy?

Why are employees of a financial institution terrorized and threatened if they want to join a union? Right now employees are scared to talk to even the labour division about it. All kind of parties and events are held for staff to fool them – don’t join a union – it is not to your benefit. Wow Dominica!

So when a regular contributor to the media finds that for months – he has to write about the way women dresses in public, he does not correct the one in the bank – where she exposes just too much and figure she looks so great? Is he afraid to correct her or he just can’t handle the heat? Doesn’t he know that charity begins at home? Or is he away too much so his counselling methods are not as effective as others? hhmmmm? just asking man.

Scotiabank has to suffer a worse fate than the Penn State University Scandal. Justice will be served no matter – it is just a matter of time. Just like Penn State University – so many things were reported and the information was swept under rugs. Leaves one to wonder what are they really hiding?

  10. September 14, 2012

The external regulatory bodies must interview the former employees. Just going to the bank will not help. Former administration and crew hid and shredded files till auditors left. The bank is only interested in saving their name, no matter what the cost.

There was a loans personnel now promoted to another position who delayed helping a customer. Every day the customer would come and enquire about his loan and he complained that she was only asking for different documents day after day and I am sure many customers have this experience. Yet every day, he was asked by that loans officer to go and collect her children to bring them to the bank or drop them to afternoon school. And her husband worked with Roseau with his own transport too. (SMH). He said that loans personnel told him, scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours. This is Scotiabank. Yes my people.

  13. September 14, 2012

    Is Scotiabank a cult?

  14. September 14, 2012

Mr Alston, you do have an employee who together with her spouse are part owners or shareholders of a newspaper. In the past, customers’ information has been provided to this newspaper. Factually, there was a big hoorah about Scotiabank account holders and wire transfers and all that. Now this employee holds a senior position where she runs her own show – a monopoly. Staff are afraid to breathe. Customers remain very exposed and at risk. All the bank does is cover alot of misdeeds but no corrective action is taken. Regulators take note.

  15. September 14, 2012

To the new manager – let’s talk about the bad habit your employees have of just taking monies from customers’ account and doing what they want, without the customers’ permission. What gives this bank the right to do that?

  16. September 14, 2012

Mr Alston, I have been reading all these comments and it appears that your employees do have a lot of time on their hands if they are able to write comments on DNO during working hours. I also find it in very poor taste of Scotiabank that you all allow your employees to continue to damage the reputation of former employees. Your present employees need to have some professionalism and etiquette and know what to say to customers instead of saying, plenty “comess” was going on. Your present employees ought not to be disgruntled that others have moved on with their lives. Why are the present employees still maliciously slashing people’s names? They should be happy – they got what they wanted – and are now in senior positions. Why exercise all this discontentment and hatred? I am extremely disappointed that these are the types of attitudes that Scotiabank is encouraging. Really – what is Scotiabank’s purpose in Dominica?

  17. September 13, 2012

now the bank is going to launch a corporate citizen campaign and brey about its corporate values ain’t it? I am totally shocked. Something is definitely wrong and I encourage all customers to be careful with their transanctions at this bank. Something is wrong… Perhaps it is beyond the head office’s natural powers to fix… hmmm.. Ain’t?

  18. September 13, 2012

Why would a mgr hold a private party for the cricketers and invited only certain female staff – because they are what the cricketers want? What is Scotiabank promoting exactly?

  19. September 13, 2012

Is it the practice of global business organizations to serve home made breakfasts laced with garlic to auditors?

  20. September 13, 2012

Investigate the present mgmt staff who signed her own loan documents, and who falsified her property appraisal to get extra money. Why did this staff and her husband obtain false documents from a man who was arrested for stealing from another company to declare income they don’t have. The former mgr knew this and she signed off on everything. And even promoted that staff member. Why whenever an audit is being conducted, that certain files would mysteriously disappear by the former manager and her click. She promoted all of her click before she was transferred. hmmm?

Who issued Mr. Alston the work permit?

  22. September 13, 2012

When employees risk all that they have and leave an institution, the international regulating bodies should investigate the institution. ECCB take note. The bible speaks of these things – the days have arrived.

  23. September 13, 2012

A staff member acted like a certain customer was her father – she fell on the floor and cried her a** out when he died. Didn’t want to leave his side. All because he was multi-millionaire. What happened after??? External governing bodies and regulators – PLEASE INVESTIGATE!!! I am very sure the deceased family members will remember clearly.

Some of the comments that are posted it is clear that’s sour grapes, EX staffers of the institution that paid you’ll salaries for yrs. run after customers like myself, thinking the bank was you’ll back yards. You’ll get them to transfer the last manager and still you’ll are not satisfied.

You all had lunch with Bobby at garge last yr to celebrate her departure, he took a cruise just to meet you all, I have pics. of that celebration. What more you’ll want? Enough is enough, stop it.

The heads of BNS need to see that because there is one more trouble maker in St. Kitts, she will not stop.

Lego, when a certain employee would return from training and go in to regular work in a little piece of short pants,(perhaps you), you found that you were offended when your supervisor corrected you and called her an ass, among other things to the people you supervised. So much for your moral standards. Now you got her position exactly what example will you be setting? Surely it is going to take more than sashaying around and grinning like a chimpanzee.

First of all , I would like to tell opinionated that his comments holds no substance and is being said with pure ignorance and a racist connotation. Canada is one of the few countries in the world which allow people to apply for jobs in the country even though they are located in all other parts of the world. It has a better immigration system that the United States.

Without a doubt, the customer service is going to immediately improve. Without a doubt, the environment at the bank is going to improve. People who live in these big countries have much more vision and a much greater innovative mind that small minded Dominicans who spend all their times on bringing down each other instead of bringing up each other. Our desires for being jealous and envious have prevented us from being productive. No local bank manager can ever have the skill, knowledge, experience and capabilities to do the job like a foreign manager. I wish that we would continue to get rid of all those haughty Dominicans who think that because they have a little education that they are more than their brother man, and start hiring Dominicans who are overseas and want to come back home. And also hire foreigners.

The real answer to your question/observation is that the disgruntle few who “left” last year wants everyone to think bad of the lady because of the big shake up it had last year when they fired their ownselves.

Ever wonder why they would all just pick up and leave if when they all had mortgages and loans? I know the reading public smarter than that.

      • September 13, 2012

Because anonymous – those who chose to leave of their free will did not want to be a part of a very sick and corrupt institution which is only bent at protecting the institution and not the human beings. Not everyone is prepared to sell their souls to the devil. You will answer to God. In the meantime, you are nominated for an Emmy.

      • September 13, 2012

Anonymous be careful – be careful. Charity begins at home. And when you live in a glass house don’t throw stones. Be very very careful now.

      • September 13, 2012

The reading public must be smart enough to call for an external audit from superior international organizations. Again, a call for a thorough investigation external and objective – from 2008 to 2012.

  36. September 13, 2012

Dear Mr Alston, tell your staff to be professional and respectful to customers. Your commercial credit dept has kept customers waiting for over 2 hours and at the end of the time, the officer sends other staff to say that she can’t see customers. This is total nonsense. If she can’t do the work – she should not be there. And caution your staff – do not tell customers that they are doing them a favour. Insulting and disrespectful.

  37. September 13, 2012

Dear Mr Scotiabank manager, please tell your staff do not use their work phones to post their body parts on their blackberries and do not claim terminal illnesses to gain sympathy from the bank’s customers, to make excuses for not doing their work. This is very unethical and disgusting. Things like that warrant further investigation.

      September 13, 2012

so let me get this straight. when you went for the mortgage didn’t they give you a copy of the amortization plan so that you can see when you will complete the pay off or rather did they not tell you the length of the mortgage? you still signed it. so you knew what you were signing. secondly, you said “it might cost alot but each mortgage needs a review”. what does that mean really? if the mortgage is a good performing loan, you think they are going to review it when time is better spent reviewing non-performning loans? they would review a good loan if the debtor wants to move it to another bank.

so there was a counry manager from Dominica who was moved for questionable practices and they brought back a Canadian. In Antigua there was a country from Antigua who was moved for questionable practices and thankfully they sent a Dominican who I am happy to report the Antiguans have so far embraced because he is an OECS national. they had fears that they were going to send another Canadian. what’s my point? it seems that when they appoint homegrown talent to run the the banks they cannot remain objective adn feel compelled to “help out” all their friends and family and cronies to the detriment of Scotiabank’s strict policies. Therefore i believe that it will be a long time before you see another bank manager who is from the territory where he/she serves.

Just a few years ago every bank, and large organisation in Dominica was run by a local Dominican, including Digicel now almost every bank and large organisation is run by expatriates. Is that a sign of progress?
Even NCB our so-call indigenous bank is run by a non-native caucasian and the government AID bank is foreign led as well.

    here is a partial list:
    domlec
    dominica breweries
    dominica coconut products
    national commercial bank
    aid bank
    digicel
    social bank
    auto trade
    etc etc

Coupled to that 80% of the retail business in Roseau is run Chinese immigrants, and 95% the market stalls have appropriated by haitien migrants. There is the specter of the the sand mining companies (80% foreign held), and soon to come a geothermal company where only 5% stake will be local and the rest foreign.

In the meanwhile large tracks of prime land is being gobbled up by external parties. By the time Dominicans wake up from their blissfully slumber they will realise the irreversible truth.

digi, people who know will tell you the clue was there in dutc. local can be dotish too.
dominica breweries, potential embarassment cause dismissal
      dcp, cut back
      ncb, politics
      domlec, buyover
autotrade, them people have to select who you want ? its a private company.

And the list will go on until we dominicans learn to appriciate our own. To much jealousy in that country…..and then they playing like is politics but the beef behind it is not no politics but envious people that dont like to see their own people progress. I fed up with these dominicans man just embarassing there professionals. Now local professionals eh want to stay in that place ’cause when out people finish with them there is little room for survival except those that have some real real solid self confidence.

To all my fellow Dominicans, I am a Dominican residing in Canada for the past 22 and a half years, been employed with Scotiabank Canada for the past thirteen years

So please be aware that there are Dominicans working with the said bank all over Canada, and be careful when posting your comments regarding the new manger

    • bias dcans
      September 12, 2012

true or not i do not know…because i know dcans say a lot of things that are not true…she could have been a great manager and the long time workers could be jealous and hence do the regular crab in a barrel behavior

      • September 12, 2012

Seriously? The past manager could not recognize an A upright…. no one could be jealous of that!

    • Anonymous
      September 12, 2012

They only quit when the bank asked them to quit instead of firing them…we all know that…and the lady promoted to manage in another country in a better economy (more responsibility). smh…wondering if u r one of them that “left”

      • September 13, 2012

you know that no one quited. They chose to leave the corruption and evil. You and those you are acting for, will answer to God. soon enough

But she was not promoted – how could she when she is so desperate to return to Dominica? The Turks and Caicos branch she’s in is like the one in Portsmouth. What is all the fuss about?

Yesi! If I personally didn’t know better I would believe you. Yes he was stopped at the airport but it was no fault of his. The bank was supposed to have been paying certain “fees” on his behalf all the years and they did not and did not realize their accounting error. Poor man got the embarrassment of his lifetime when he was supposed to be starting his retirement…boy allu d/cans does say tings just to make somebody look bad…smh.

Seriously my fellow Dominicans, does Scotia Bank owe yall anything?

    • September 13, 2012

Yes. like letting us customers know why interest rates on deposits are decreasing; why service fees are increasing’ why it is so difficult to get a mortgage equity loan? why the managers are personally refunded for corporate tax? and why the Scotiabank’s president collects $8 – $9 million bonus every single year. Check the scotiabank’s website – why does he collect all this and employees are treated like animals? It is time for the media to obtain the truth.

You mean to tell me, so long Scotia Bank opened its doors in Dominica, they have not trained a Dominican to be Manager of the Bank?

There should be conditions set for these foreign banks: after x years of operations the Manager should be a Dominican period!

    • k
      September 12, 2012

Dont be like that, they just appointed a Dominican to be manager in Antigua.

    • September 12, 2012

Banks need “qualified” people to do this job, there is no “training” as you suggest, it is called a “degree”.

    • budman
      September 12, 2012

i thought we did have a country manager from DA at one time.

secondly , if they don’t abide by our conditions then what? force the bank to close? and put 100 dominicans out of work? in battle you must always remember when you have leverage and when you don’t

    • DNO Reader
      September 12, 2012

they hired a foreigner because when it was entrusted to a “local” the result was dismal failure…straight talk…where are all the senior managers who were at scotia before Hurricane ran through the bank…

    • non-resident
      September 12, 2012

don’t be foolish! you know the answer why the local managers can’t be appointed…

    • Blind Bat
      September 12, 2012

For a Watchdog you more blind than me. The last couple of years Scotia Bank actually had a Dominican from St Joseph as country manager. Go back in the press and see who, how and when she gave loans. Every other customer paying mamatete interest and crab ketcher and crew getting loan for millyans at 2.6% ! Think is so. When they give all you job all you too like to do what all you want de wite man do rite come and run his bank.

Why on earth do we allow foreigners to manage our affairs?

The Canadian government has just imposed visa restrictions on I think 3 other Caribbean countries simply to control the flow of black people into their countries. These people have opened up their shores to their European white brothers. When will we open our eyes?

    • FED UP
      September 12, 2012

It’s a Canadian bank. You allow it on the island, expect it to be run by Canadians. You have a choice, use only NBD, and these banks will cease to exist and these situations will no longer occur! Then you can express this same opinion to the hundreds of people who will be affected as a result.

      • Tom
        September 12, 2012

        Empty barrels again.

      • Tiger
        September 12, 2012

Not only that, take all your business to AID and NDC and they will be the only banks left on the island so they will have a monopoly on banking. See how well that works for you.

I don’t know why some people don’t keep their mouths shut when they hear people talking.

      • chacha
        September 12, 2012

*smh*** people need to educate themselves before making such silly comments.
Problem is most Dominicans mainly listen to these Dummiincans.

      • September 12, 2012

FED UP — very well said! I would like to add, with more banks, this means more competition, which in turn means better rates for Dominicans.

    • Tri-State Beauty
      September 12, 2012

but what is that at all for me Opinionated? FYI Scotia Bank is a Canadian Bank, and since they employee almost 267 Dominicans globally, multiply the Domino effect and stop being racist for everything. Case by Case deary, case by case.

    • budman
      September 12, 2012

and then the Canadian govt retaliates by expelling Dominicans who are not Canadian citizens that may be working in Canada. You go find work for them to do? when Dominicans go elsewhere and land big job you ready to say congrats but somebody else can’t land big job here? what for goat must be for sheep.

    • Malatete
      September 12, 2012

And there I,innocently, thought that someone’s ethnic origin or skin colour should be of no hindrance. Apparently it is ok for us to attain status in foreign parts but God forbid a “foreigner” (…and a “blanc” to boot!) does the same here.We should be ashamed of such double standards. Let’s judge mr. Alston by his performance and his actions instead.
