Night landing stays – Bardouille

Bardouille said there is not truth to LIAT ending night landing in Dominica
Bardouille said there is not truth to LIAT ending night landing in Dominica

Chief Executive Officer of the Dominica Air and Seaport Authority (DASPA), Benoit Bardouille, is denying claims that LIAT will soon be cutting night landing flights into the island.

The matter has been mentioned recently in some circles and on social media but Bardouille told DNO it is all wrong.

“There is no truth in the sense that LIAT is cutting night landing flight into Dominica because, you know, the time that the airport is opened until 10:00 pm and we are opened to flights…” he said.

According Bardouille, LIAT has been rescheduling it flights throughout the region and Dominica is no exception.

He noted this will not affect night landing in Dominica.

“So there is no truth to the fact that LIAT is cutting flights in terms of night landing,” Bardouille insisted.

He said Dominica’s main airport, the now Douglas-Charles Airport, is always “available” for incoming flights.

“The airport is available, it is the company scheduling in terms of how their flights go during the course of any one day and then if you have any delay then the airport is still available,” he said.

Night landing has been hailed by the government as the “largest leap forward” in the development of Dominica.

I guess Bardouille will keep the airport open till 10 pm so his partners and them he send Meville Hall to work will still get their overtime and the overtime goes for Customs as well. Come on FS look into that. If not night flights why keep the airport open till 10 pm?

    October 29, 2014

Mr. Bardouille ……Why are you keeping the night landing open when LIAT will not be landing at night anymore.

This will only cost the taxpayers and the country more money.
Be sensible and put your tail between your legs and close the night landing to preserve the little money that is remaining in the treasure.

They see the writing on the wall but they claim its a forgery. Even if Liat say it themselves UWP will still say is lie. How UWP want DA to vote for them when they keep praying to see the country in the drain? Wait still, the bush will fall right back on all you, see how lennox slowly self destructing.

David Evans, the Chief Executive Officer of LIAT just confirmed that the airline will be much smaller in 2015. It will also reduce its fleet of aircraft and here you are talking about Lennox and UWP.
It’s sad to read the comments from some people on DNO. Then again, when the political bosses continue to keep the masses in ignorance, you wind up with statements like yours. There are some decisions that are much bigger and more complicated than Lennox or the Hon. Prime Minister.

Please, come clean mr. Bardouille. Today LIAT announced plans to lay off 20% of its staff and cut back its fleet by two aircaft (from 11 to 9), representing up to 18% of its capacity. How are they going to maintain, let alone increase their schedule to Dominica? What exactly did our Govt buy for its alleged $8 million cash injection?

We should have heeded the warning and been more vigilant when LIAT published their new winter schedule, which shows that none of the flights will be operated with the old Dash-8 300’s but exclusively with the new ATR-4’s and ATR-7’s (apart from, I suspect a short term leased, DH Twin Otter during the month of November).
I doubt whether LIAT can survive long term in this mode and urge close cooperation, if not a merger with Caribbean Air.

      Oxford English Dictionary:

Fact = a thing that is known to be true. Also (facts) = information used as evidence or as part of a report.

If you want to argue the veracity of this interpretation I suggest you either do so with the compilers of the dictionary or the judiciary.

    Phone Ringing
Baduille: Hello how can I help you

LIAT: Baduille we expecting a delay today can you turn the night landing switch on and keep the airport open up to 9:00 PM. But note we are LIAT so we may need the airport open up to 1:00 AM

Baduille : OK we will do that. We will deduct the cost from the $8 Million we promised because them opposition fellas catch the sneaky landing tax that we wanted to impose on the people so we could support the losses at the airport.

LIAT: We need that money so just wait we will try to ease up the embarrassment to the Skerrit government till after the election then the taxes can be enforced and te night landing flight will go away.

    Baduille: Night landing go away????.

LIAT: Off course why should we schedule a late flight when there is nothing happening in Dominica. Frankly the economy is brain dead.

Baduille: No comment. Wait till the dilapidated condition of the Deep water Harbor pier comes back to the light.

All this fuss about night landing . We need an international airport people. Stop putting a band aid on that old airport,
We are in the modern times , how do we expect our tourism industry to grow , if our biggest flight is a little liat , come on . It’s time to get serious and build an airport, seems we are not thinking straight, we have all the ,gravel ,stone , sand etc.
I think Dominicans are intelligent people . They know we need it. What I think is happening is that the selfish big shots are affraid that ,their little mom and pap shops , and hotels , will be no match for international competition.
Once we get an international airport ,it will have to wake people up to deliver service.

Real Possie, when last you traveled or tried to book a flight on liat? No matter how much money is pumped into an airline and it is no economical for the airline to fly a couple passengers, it is obvious that they will do other wise. For example; I was traveling back to DA in September on Seaborn and because it was 4 of us they cancelled that flight. Come on let’s not be political or play dum and let’s put some sense in our heads. The vast of people traveling to DA on a daily bases is very small unless it is carnival, festival or summer.

There you go – you make the argument why an international airport, the kind being advocated by both political parties on island, is a fool’s errand.

We cannot afforit, not now, not…. Well a lot has to change, regards the dwindling population, stagnating economy (what we selling? to whom? to where?), unfocused fetes, lack of a genuine national development plan, and the list goes on.

  18. October 28, 2014

First and foremost, we faithful Laborites would like to thank Mr. Bardouille for clearing the air on this matter. I read the
article in full and understood exactly what was said.
The fact is, the whole idea of the cessation of night landing was simply a rumor being spread by the Operatives of the United Wicked People to discredit our Supreme Leader. These unscrupulous people just don’t know when to give up! They believe that spreading lies about the night landing will gain them votes. How ridiculous! Night landing is indeed alive and well at the Douglas-Charles Airport and will remain that way for a very long time to come!
The schemers on the OTHER SIDE wish to call into question the 8 million dollars given to LIAT to keep the company afloat during a difficult financial period. Yet, they fail to realize that if it were not for that 8 million dollars there would be NO LIAT flights to Dominica as we speak.
Our Supreme Leader is a visionary and the wisest Prime Minister that Dominica has ever seen. The monies invested in LIAT and night landing was well spent. It is now a great benefit to all Dominicans and to all visitors who arrive at this particular port of entry. The United Wicked Party’s criticism is unfounded and without merit.
Night landing is not a Roosevelt Skerrit or even a Labor Party issue because it is for the benefit of ALL Dominicans! There is no amount of rumors that will erase the wonderful things that this Government has done for this Island. Labor Power is definitely a force to be reckoned with! It’s still at least 30 more years of Dr. Skerrit as Dominica’s Commander in Chief. Get used to it…please!

Did anyone question whether or not the airport is opened to flights? In fact this statement here tells us why Dominica is so backward and why replacing people like you is important if Dominica wants to go forward. Let’s face reality sir. What economic sense it makes to keep an airport opened till 10pm, pay overtime to staff, pay extra money to Domlec when you have NO Schedule flights coming in after 6PM? You keep it opened just in case Liat has a delay? Pure crap! If LIAT is rescheduling and cutting off flights that are not deemed profitable to them then why would the airport and government don’t reschedule to ensure that every dollar is well spent? Is that how you would run your store if you had one? Would you keep it opened till 10:pm, pay overtime to staff, pay extra to Domlec, just in case people are late from the movies? I mean I would understand if you were informed that Liat would be late and therefore you will close late with LIAT agreeing to pay for the extra; but to say you are opened till 10 PM when you know LIAT or others have NO schedule flights after 6PM is just crap to say the list.

Baduille you are demonstrating the level of consistency that the ruling system is built on built on – the effective use of lying, twisting and smoke and mirrors. When the truth does not paint a great picture of the ruling politicians find ways to blow smoke up the rear end of the masses and hope that all will get a cheap high just like the dollar crack addict and the crack retailers get some money and the wholesale pushers become wealthy.
Let us not forget either that it was the same Baduille who told us together with Ian Douglas that the Carnival Cruise was pulling out of Dominica because of fuel concern.
I sure hope that after reading or even reviewing what he said Baduille will have himself an epiphany and seek inner peace.

Even the rum Kabawere owners who are not professionally trained understand that keeping the shop open for ghost customers is bad for business. Now here it is that the Chief executive director of the Dominica Air and Seaport Authority (DASPA)is telling us that even if LIAT does not schedule night flights into Dominica the airport could remain open until 10:00 PM. I guess he would do so just to prove that we have night landing.

After reading this statement from Baduille I am further convinced that we just should not in this time be talking proud or even negative about ” NIGHT LANDING”. Not when places like St Kitts and St Vincent are talking about flights. But that is a topic that has been bruised , abused , over debated however it is quite obvious that unless we take our wings and fly away we will remain stuck in the mind set of parochialism and low self esteem.

I have received from a credible source that LIAT intensions to remove night landing from Dominica was put on hold because of some fancy foot work by the Skeritt led Administration. It is alleged the Government threatened to hold back the balance of payment from the promised US $8000 to LIAT. It is also alleged, the Government asked LIAT that whatever decision that has to be implemented, it would be unfair and at a disadvantage to the Government just before the General Elections which are due very soon.

I believe that mr. Bardouille is economical with the truth. Yes, we do have night landing facilities and yes , they are here to stay and yes, they will keep Melville Hall open for flights after 6.30 pm. However, that will be on an ad-hoc & needs basis (for instance when scheduled flights are late) and I ask him to tell the public exactly which LIAT flights are scheduled to land there after dark. We need to know so we can plan our journeys accordingly. Mr. Bardouille is known for plain speaking and I trust he will oblige this time also.

It is truly amazing how much some people are willing to destroy a lifetime reputation and to make themselves “Weezib” just to appease passers-by and Johnny cone lately politicians.
What is wrong with just saying yes that LIAT is no longer operating any night flights into Dominica. It is a fact Badouille and if LIAT is not operating any night Flight into Dominica then it simply means there will be no night landing.
I guess that our people have become so use to the top and spins that everyone is jumping on the Tony Astaphan and Skerrit band wagon of deception.

  42. Perplexed Tourist
    October 28, 2014

The issue is not Dominica’s readiness to accept all flights (Douglas-Charles is an excellent facility), The problem is Liat’s utter disregard of the effect flight schedule changes have on travelers to Dominica. An example is the cancelation of the 5:00pm nonstop flight from Barbados to Dominica. By eliminating this flight, travelers departing from New York (JFK) must overnight in Barbados because the flight from JFK arrives at Grantley Adams at 1:41pm which is too late to make the 2:00pm flight to Dominica. This means more time and money to get to Dominica for a huge number of potential travelers from the north east region of the US. These tourists are anxious to get out of the snow and cold and although Dominica may have been their first choice this extra hassle will cause them to book elsewhere. Why does Dominica insist on shooting itself in the foot when it comes to making it an easy destination? Either reinstate the 5:00pm flight or move the 2:00pm to 3 or 4pm. This is an easy fix. Do it before you lose another season. Liat is taking money out of your pockets!

      Why blame Dominica forthat ?
This is nt a decision taken by Dominica but by Liat.
You can still fly to sxm instead and get winair or liat connections out of sxm.

Remember Mr. Skeritt said that by Giving 8 million He would have a seat and a voice in the affairs of LIAT.Is this being effective or is Badouille trying to pull the wool over our eyes ? We need a Government we can believe ,Change is a must ! This one appears to have lied to us ,tricked us , deceived us one too many times !

Thank you for explaining this to Tyanni, I heard him last night talking that crap and i was wondering how can LIAT stop Night Landing?? Our airport is structured to accept flights after sunset so flights can land, whether it’s LIAT or WinAir or Huming Bird!!!!

In my match box brain, Mr. Baardouille has not addressed the issue of night landing. It cannot be if a flight comes, the airport will be opened, what is that. My country is becoming a big joke.

  44. October 28, 2014

Why on earth is Dominica so concerned about night landing? It is now available, Yes it is, but now that it is, then we should do one thing and that is build the inventory, more hotel rooms are necessary if we are to be a viable Tourist Destination, We have the rooms then more people will travel to paradise, then and only then will night landing will be in demand, and please very important do not concentrate on Liat, we know ell enough what Liat is all about, build your inventory whilst looking at other Airlines like winair, and others of the same capacity to fly into Dominica.

True, I see even the boutique hotel at Pagua Bay, no more than 10 minutes from the airport, opened not more than five years ago is for sale. U.S.2.9 million, check “rightmove!” U.K. under Caribbean. Why is that?

      October 28, 2014

      Clayton Felix

You are stuck in the Middle Ages! You are supporting regression.

Dominica’s hotels are not operating to capacity. In simple English, we cannot fill our hotels, although we are ignoring this vital stats by continuing to build hotels.

Why should passengers travelling to Dominica , languish in Antigua or Barbados because LIAT does not provide the connecting flight?

I dislike uninformed comments. If you do not have anything constructive to post, then keep your fingers away from your keyboard.

What mista really saying there nuh? “there is no truth in the fact………………..!”

Bardouille, as the CEO of DASPA, was made to be insignificant during the renaming of the airport. The whole event featured the PM as the lone ranger. Its as if DASPA was not even consulted, except to put machinery in place for the actual renaming ceremony. If I was in his place, I would let Skerrit answer the question about night landing. How can the State give the man an airport to run then come from behind and under him and rename the airport? This is insulting to him. Recently, they Gazetted a new tax to be paid by the travelling public and Bardouille didn’t even now about it. And they want de man to vote for them!

Pure nonsense. When will these people learn that real development comes from improvement of the social and economic well-being of a people. How can night landing be a major form of development in country when other nations have achieved it decades ago if not a centuries ago. Learn from great nations they a there as an example to emulate the good aspects of their societies. Hint start constructing infrastructure that’s going to give poor people children a chance to succeed in life and have meaningful careers not just a basic job that can hardly support a monthly meal for most families let alone other expenses. We need to develope pride in our individuality as Dominicans and in Dominica and stop settling for basic. We are not a basic people. We dominate when given a chance to excel, so let’s do that give the people as chance.

But still you can’t make a fool drink water if he doesn’t want to drink even if it may save his life

Ken when last you visited Dominica?? Have you seen the State of the Art Infrastructure that is housing the Dominica State College??

Do you know that this government is providing free school bus for children to attend school?

Do you know that this Government policy of a University Graduate in every home is actually a reality, Dominica can now boast of having the most university graduate per Capita than any other island in the OECS or maybe even Caricom.

Have you ever heard of the Yes we care?

Back to the airport – Dominica was not born 14 or 15 years ago, we have had many Administrators, Chief Ministers, Premieres and Prime Ministers, it took this Government to light up the airport that was commissioned in 1961 under E.O Le Blanc, so yes they should take the credit for doing a job that should have been done ions ago!! They can also boast of the many achievements that should have happened ions ago such as ensuring 100% pipe borne water we are now 95% and the other 5% are work in progress, history in the making. This government has also reduce taxes and has used its’ foreign policy to fill in the blanks.

If you are objective you will agree that this government has worked and is working… Soon to come ‘Geothermal Energy’ we will be the first in the Caribbean to be Fossil Free by 2016. I voting for that and more… Labour Ka Twavie!!!!!!!

Bardouille, lies have a way of leaping from the trash bin where we spew them, and bite us on our backside! It is either you are deaf, stupid, in denial or perhaps you are just not familiar with the English language. Other than that perhaps you and Skerrit owns LIAT, and you are going to make LIAT continue Landing in Dominica at 9:00 PM.

Have you ever heard the name ” International Air Transport Association” (IATA), unless you and Skerrit are the authority over that organization, I do see how you are going to get LIAT to accommodate your rubbish. The only way LIAT will continue to accommodate you is if they cancel their just acquired membership in IATA, if they fly a single flight into Dominica, as of today, they be in violation the rules of the organization, and will be expelled from IATA.

You think they are going to let that happen to suit you who believes you are big-shot in Dominica, I mean toys like you voices are only heard in Dominica, if you thing that is a myth, ask your Prime Minister what happened to him in Belize when they said the Prime Minister of Dominica is aboard; when the boss ask who is the prime minister, and Skerrit said, I am or perhaps he said me!

Ask him if his power in Dominica, and his name meant anything in Belize.

Besides LIAT has already announced that they will not be flying into Dominica at night. If is one time I am happy to see something go wrong, and backfire in Skerrit’s face it is the discontinuation of LIAT to accommodate his crap, the lesson is until you build an International Airport, to hell with you and your crap!

In 2014 we are making night landing a topic for discussion. That is a shame. What does it matter when we have low volume year round except during festival. Don’t we have important stuff to talk about?

    October 28, 2014

Boy all you fellas cannot be thinking right before all you open the mouth and talk such crap. The fact of the matter is that liat have cut its flights to Dominica and have cut its night flights into the island. There was a flight which left Barbados at about 6 and got in at after 7 or 8 through Lucia that’s cut. The last flight from Antigua have returned to previous, which is after 5. The night landing is done and gone.

Well guys, that’s me done. I will now fly from London (Heathrow!) to St. Maarten (via Paris) and then by Winair to Melville Hall. Trust me, there is currently a ticket price on offer from KLM of, £(pounds) 525 to St. Maarten (return) and Winair have proper interlining arrangements with KLM/Airfrance plus better connecting times so you don’t have to hang around at awful Antigua airport. Stuff LIAT.

“The airport is available, it is the company scheduling in terms of how their flights go during the course of any one day and then if you have any delay then the airport is still available,” he said.

So in other words flights will only be landing at nights, when Liat has any delays not because they’re scheduled to do so? Am confused 8-O

Have you ever heard of the word disingenuous? Well, that is exactly what this is. Mr. Bardouille is only putting more oil on the fire by taking all of us for dummies. Melville Hall is a failure and it is better to say so. At least then we can on with our lives and make other arrangements.

  54. Bull Crap
    October 28, 2014

But this guy man. their is no truth to liat cutting flight in term of night landing but LIAT has been rescheduling it flights throughout the region and Dominica is no exception.

No one said the airport is not available to land, even if the airport open till 2 AM and you have no scheduled flights is that not the same as no lights.. If an airline cutting it flights at night how is saying that a rumor?

To me I would not respond to that, I saw that all over the net and never paid that no mind the people who saying so are UWP members. You see the reason now we put millions into liat? so we don’t have to worry about hearsay like these, if anything you have to start with other islands who never contributed a dime but still getting full service. This is just another dumb red herring passed by the (Trim Fou).

    October 28, 2014

Mr. Bardouille is saying plenty but nothing of substance. Nobody is arguing the option o f night landing isn’t still available but who is going to use the night land facilities if not liat. Isn’t liat the only airline using our night land facilities now the have change their flight schedule whose gonna land at night. Leaving an airport open at night to facilitate liat flight delays make no economic sense smh

For an aviator you profess significant ignorance. There are two daily flights from London to Barbados by Virgin and BA alone. Then there are weekly flights from Manchester (Virgin and Thomas Cook), several flights a week by Condor from Frankfurt or Manchester, either direct or via Tobago, St. Lucia or ||Grenada.
This is not counting the numerous flights from N. America, 11 flights per week alone from Toronto (Canadian & Westjet), the Daily Jetblue flight from New York or the two daily American flights from from Miami, Delta from Miami, ditto U.S.Air and United from St. Maarten. This is not a conclusive list, go and check for yourself.

ANU? No thank you, that airport and the LIAT service there are the pits. No wonder they are going down the pan despite their exorbitant prices…or perhaps, because of them.
