No brown sugar for another week

Dominicans are expected to be without brown sugar for at least another week because of weather conditions in Guyana, Norman Dorival Manager of the Commercial Department at Dominica Import and Export Agency (DEXIA), has revealed.

DEXIA is the agency responsible for the importation of sugar to Dominica.

Over the past few days Dominicans have been struggling to buy brown and white sugar but according to Dorival white sugar should be available on supermarket shelves by Wednesday.

However brown sugar remains are a problem.

“We have had issues with the importation of brown sugar,” Dorival explained. “We must get it from Guyana as a CARICOM member state and Guyana had issues with unseasonal rains causing problem with the crop. But they have assured us that things will be back to normal within the next week or so.”

He also disclosed that DEXIA was working on clearing white sugar at the port and the product is expected to be made available to the various supermarket owners on the island within the next 24 hours.

Sugar is one of the foods that causes a lot of nnflamation in the body. Staying away from it for a few days will result in more good for all of us. Especially with diabetes increasing at an alarmng rate its maybe a blessing that the shortage occur.

After all, the shortage of sugar is no big deal. Dominicans do not need extra sugar in their diet. All foods have their natural sugar. Sugar promotes obesity and other ailments like kidney disease. There should be an advocacy to decrease the sugar intake among our citizens instead.

we should examine this problem very seriously..what if today all brown sugar disappeared and tomorrow all sugar daddies are gone…just unacceptable!

No sugar. No problem. If you must have everything sweetened, then use honey.

There should be no problems in getting honey from elsewhere, we have it right here on the island. Try the brand made in Goodwill.

I’m more concerned when we run out of cooking gas.

The exploration of alternatives, usually only happen when our backs are against the wall. From alternative energy sources, alternative agricultural methods, to alternative dietary lifestyles.

We are facing challenges now with a rise in the cost of living and the declining imports. It may be better to practice doing without for a while or experimenting with alternatives, than crying about a sugar shortage now, when there may be longer shortages with multiple products to come…

but i was thinking the same thing Dominica has the means to produce their own sugar white or brown, but they are to dam lazy to do anything for themselves all they are interested in is looking nice, and they got the cheek to expect us overseas to support them i love Dominica thats my country, but am sorry to say i have lost taste with a lot of them.

I remember my mother arguing with Sukie during the forty-one day strike back in the Patrick John Administration. Sukie refused to sell her a few pounds of brown sugar, because she did not buy bread from his shop.
Back then, no bread purchase no sugar sold. Things have not changed much, I guess.

dominicans… this is a ‘good’ thing… it should be for 2 more weeks… i hardly use sugar.. on top of that we consume so many beverages… drink your milk plain… it don’t hurt…

Dominica has sugar cane, and can produce more. Perhaps it should look into producing its own sugar and not depend on others. We have the means.

This just a “cozy” arrangement brother. We say that we are compelled to buy from Guiana and only have one importer distributor in Dominica. Who benefits? cerainly not the consumer. And yet, Dexia still can’t make money! Bet we could get our sugar cheaper, and better quality even if we bought from the E.U.!

This is a real non issue; so what if there is no sugar, are we going to all perish? Probably this is the Master giving us “paradise in disguise” to curb our current difficulties with CNCD

Get back to the things we use to do, what happen to VEEZOO?(Cane Juice) That thing sweeten coaco so good. Stop worry about what you do not have and use what you grow. Necessity is the mother of invention.

I agree with Nostalgia. Dominica has a great product that can be used to sweeten coaco tea – Ginger Syrup, made in Dominica. I have tried it and love it.

I have brown and white sugar at my home, made some grapefruit juice and forgot to put sugar in it, guess what…I drank it just so, it did not taste bad at all. But for those who unhappy about the shortage, try honey.

      February 28, 2012

Nostalgia, I remember that too. But where the hell can you buy veezoo these days. The only sugar cane grown in any quantity is at Macoucherie for their rum. Would you believe I even have difficulty in finding ripe banananas!

hi….diabetes is not caused by using too much sugar

  24. Malatete
    February 28, 2012

We have had problems like this before. There is also an issue with quality when the sugar appears to come from the bottom of the barrel and has a sour smell.

Isn’t it time we review the monopoly Dexia has on the supply of such a basic commodity?
