PM pushes special loan facility for non-financial cooperatives

PM Skerrit

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit says he is pushing for a special loan facility for non-financial cooperatives.

He has challenged the cooperative division to put the facility in place, promising that he would find the necessary funding.

However, PM Skerrit refused to be drawn into disclosing the level of funding the government would be willing to pump into the project.

The Prime Minister indicated however, that members of the cooperatives have been asking for help, and he wants to address their concerns.

Is this how business is done? You challenging them to put something together? So you have no idea what you are looking for? Then whatever they propose you will just accept and run with it.

Skerrit needs to sit and think out strategies too, this is what he is being paid to do.

Isn’t there a Cooperative Societies League which was established long time ago to help non-financial coops? It was originally named the Dominica Cooperative Credit Union League (DCCUL). That egoistic, self-aggrandizement, without-me-no-money attitude is laughable.

Over the past decade, check the number of coops that have folded up. Markets have dried up for their products. Artisans, coops are finding it more and more difficult to market their arts and craft products. Cheaper goods from the Chinese stores have virtually thrown some local Coop. members out of business. Management problems also plague many Coops. The environment in which those Coops once operated is not as enabling. Where are the investments in Agriculture? Agricultural COOPs dead.

That is all you will ever be hearing about that matter. If Feeder roads will get just 2 million, how much will this new financial facility get. How organized are these non-financial organization to setup such a facility by themselves? One gets the impression as usual Skerrit is making up stories as he goes along..
