Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit is expected to return to the island today after an official visit to Azerbaijan.

The aim of the visit was to discuss development of relations between the two states.

“Dominica and Azerbaijan seek joint steps to ensure global peace and security. Dominica is interested in developing cooperation with Azerbaijan in agricultural, educational and commercial spheres,” Skerrit said.

During the visit Skerrit met with a number of high ranking  Azerbaijani officials  including president Ilham Aliyev, Prime Minister Artur Rasizade, and Vice-speaker of the Azerbaijan Parliament Valeh Alaskarov.

During his visit to the Azerbaijani Parliament Skerrit noted that “the number of political parties represented at Parliament is evidence to democracy in the country.”

At a visit to the Azerbaijani President the two leaders underlined the two countries were interested in expanding bilateral relations. They also discussed prospects of cooperation between the two countries in a variety of fields, in particular political and economic ones.

At a meeting with Prime Minister Artur Rasizade, Skerrit expressed his confidence that his visit to Azerbaijan will encourage development of bilateral relations and noted that there are great potential to develop ties between the two states.

Skerrit also visited the Heydar Aliyev Foundation which was established in memory of the Azerbaijani people`s national leader Heydar Aliyev and the National Museum of Azerbaijan which houses some 300,000 exhibits of the country’s history.

A high level delegation from Azerbaijan is expected in Dominica at the end of the year.

The Prime Minister was accompanied by Ambassador Vince Henderson and Barbadian Hartley Henry.

I mean the man has to start somewhere Azerbaijan is one of the best business countries he could use some advice from them to establish businesses in the country to take it to the next level. Money doesn’t fall from the you know and we are surely not going to get much from agriculture and tourism we need more and the PM has the right motive in mind to develop the country.

I wonder how the other guys in the cabinet feel. I am no expert but I would guess that this trip cost the tax payers not less than EC $75,000. Although I have my reservations I will not question validity of this travel however I am still trying to figure out why it was important to enlist a Barbadian who has no business in Dominica and Vince Henderson a man who left the political arena ,blasted the DLP and it’s leadership and now………………….(fill in the blanks) is traveling on the VAT of an over taxed Dominica.
What is wrong with Kelver, Justina , the dude who is a minister another minister’s ministry- what about the paid advisors and consultants like Parry. What about Ian the minister of Tourism? None of these people are worthy of the business trip? The PM must declare the cost to the VATDICANS (Dominica VAT payers) particularly Hartley’s share of the loot.

“The number of political parties represented at Parliament is evidence of democracy in the country”. One must assume that this statement, by mr. Skerrit, with reference to Azerbijan, was strictly an exercise in diplomacy. He would hate to thought of as naive but perhaps he is unaware that Azerbijan currently holds more than 60 political prisoners, incarcerated for views that do not accord with the rulers of their country.

Last Saturday, August 13, The Times of London reported:” the offices of the Institute for Peace and Democracy, a women’s crisis centre and an anti-landmine group were torn down by Azerbaijan authorities despite an injunction granted in May pending a final court ruling”.

This action was condemned by the U.N., the same body where Vince Henderson represents us and today, 16 August the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights issued a statement urging Azerbaijan to guarantee safe working conditions for human rights workers in Azerbaijan , in line with international agreements.

It appears that the Azerbaijan Govt. view of democracy differs from ours.

this man feel that the position he holds is his birthright. he refuses to realize that the people who voted him in to the position he now holds, are the same people who he now leaves with unanswered questions too numerous to mention. I can bet you that any demonstration on our part is going to be met by swift military retaliation. we now live in a military or police state….a phenomena of dictatorship.

People, I think we need to ask the question………Hartley Henry!!!!!!!! Is he someone who lived in Dominica for many years?? Is he someone who grew up with us and has taken Da on as his homeland after so many years??? Or is he someone who just grew out of the woodwork since Mr. Skeritt became leader?? Well, if he just grew out of the woodwork then we must be very careful because a foreigner with so much influence that he must travel with the leader on overseas trips to discuss Dominican matters is to me either a clear sign of incompetence on the part of the leader or a clear sign of an ulterior motive on the part of the foreigner!!!!!!!!!! Keep vigilant my people, don’t take everything at face value!!!!!!!!! Remember we are the guardians of our country!!!!!!! God bless Dominica and its people!!!!

Could we for once put our trust in the Heavenly Father and judge not and ask our Lord to pour a blessing over this nation. Let us throw away the negative and trust the Lord that our Nation will prosper.

Pray for our Leaders is the first step since we will be at peace once our nation is at peace. Let us not emulate what is happenning in the world because the world is not of him but the adversary ” Enemy of our soul” is loose and seeking to kill, steal and destroy. All the negative, doubts, backlashing, slander, jealousy, envy, doubts are seeds of the “Evil One”. Open our eyes and let us use our tongue wisely. ie speak positive and life and most of all be thankful to our Father for the so many blessings bestowed upon this land.

A State of the Art Library calls for a new location and with security cameras. If we are doing something good for the country lets go all the way. lets have a Science Museum (schools can have field trips)

I have no fundamental objection to the Government of Dominica developing co-operation with Azerbaijan in areas of agriculture, education and commerce. That’s a function of Governemnt. However, my concern is the role being played by the controversial figure Mr. Harltley Henry in the foreign affairs of Dominica and his apparent unrestricted influence/dominiance over the Prime Minister/Government, somewhat akin to Gregori Rasputin of ancient Russia. Is Hartley Henry a paid consultant or a Government Official? Remember, Mr. Henry was the un-identified,shady individual on the fringes in that infamous group photo taken during the China/Dominica negotiations some years ago. Hartley must be smiling all the way to the Bank!

    August 15, 2011

I really do not know what Skerrit’s critics want the PM to do.The United Kingdom, the US, France, Germany, the European Union, the so called “traditional donors” in general are in no position to invest or assist Dominica or any other Caribbean state for that matter.

Any piece of foreign exchange that the PM can get invested into Dominica will help. He travels to those places that are not traditional donors and seeks to get investment and to interest them in spending some of their trillions in Dominica and he is decried.

Wake up people! Dominica is a small island state in a very troubled world. To be a leader of any of these small island states is far from easy. The man is trying wherever he can to forge new links for our future benifit.

He takes a citizen of a fellow CARICOM state along with him to assist in negotiations and all hell breaks loose. The same Hartley Henry who used to accompany the late David Thompson PM of Barbados to assist with negotiations. Can we not share each other’s expertise across the Caribbean?

I really wonder about the maturity of our people when I read some of those blinkered, narrow minded posts on DNO.

“Dominica and Azerbaijan seek joint steps to ensure global peace and security.”

How can two nations that small accomplish something that large?

I still don’t see how this is good for Dominica, and why THAT nation of all nations in the world?

    • ?????????????
      August 15, 2011

Two small nation can ensure global peace since the two (2) nations seek the Heavenly Father first in their conquest. With God all things are possible. Once the leaders of those two small countries invest in the Heavenly Father, yes of course they can accomplish something that large but the question is are the Leaders going to do that. Let us all pray that they will do just that – seek ye first the Kingdom of God and his righteousness and all other things will be added. In a troubled world like this what should a leader do – put all his trust in the Father, seek him and do his will and then the nation can accomplish much. But we must be grateful for all the good things we do have in this nation.

This is a typical case of a one-man government syndrome. It is rather shameful to embark on a trip like that without a clear vison and purpose.tO ADD INSULT TO INJURY, Heartly is the architect of Dominica foriegn policy? Why don’t we have Dominican ministers and dignitaries involved in the internal and foreign affairs of other Caribbean islands like Barbados, Trinidad and Jamaica, or even some of the smaller Caricom states like St. Kitts, Grenada, St. Lucia etc.
