REDjet to redefine Caribbean air travel

REDjet is all set to become the Caribbean’s first low-fare airline and is now looking to acquire a licence to fly from Jamaica. Founded in 2006 by Ian and Robbie Burns, the father and son duo made a concerted effort to get the airline started in Jamaica under the name Airone, but it was thought at the time that it would prove a competitor to Air Jamaica, the national carrier the government was eager to divest.

The two men relocated to Barbados refined the model and remained steadfast in their tenacity to launch the Caribbean’s first low-fare carrier. Today the company is privately owned and incorporated in St Lucia, with its corporate offices located at Grantley International Airport in Barbados. Plans are afoot to establish other bases in Jamaica, Trinidad and Guyana.

    AA–and i guess you mean eagle….Eagle is not a jet..It is propeller .

      February 12, 2011

      You are only partly correct
The ATR 72 used by American Eagle is a turboprop. Yes, it does have propellers but the basic principle of the engine is like a jet, the difference being that wheras in the latter the exhaust gases provide thrust, in a turboprop these gases are used to drive a turbine with a shaft coupled to a propeller. In essence it is a jet engine that drives a propeller and radically different from a conventional piston driven one.

Our enthusiasm for improved air access to the Nature Isle is unmatched by the limitations of Melville Hall Airport. This is so sad for Dominica’s future. I wish our airport and total number of passengers who fly in and out of Melville Hall daily, was in line with our enthusiasm.

Dominicans are so fast to put the country down. This plane is still small and can land easily. We not talking about virgin and ba or aa 747 or airbus here people. That plane lands and takes off easily and the Caribbean needs this big time. Can’t wait to see liat’s next move. I love it. Looks like I will be getting more deals within a few years

MAY I REMIND YOU THAT AMERIJET IS CARGO AND RED JET IS PASSENGER? A LEARJET IS ABOUT THE SIZE OF THE TWIN OTTER CAN IT LAND AT CANEFIELD? ITS NOT ABOUT SIZE ONLY…THERE ARE LESS RESTRICTIONS ON CARGO PLANE AS APPOSE TO PASSENGERS….AMERIJET LANDS AT ST VINCENT BUT AMERICAN EAGLE A MUCH SMALLER PLANE NO LONGER DOES….RESTRICTIONS!!!!!!!! STOP MIXING APPLES WITH ORANGES….PLEASE TRY FINDING OUT THE LANDING AND TAKE OFF WIEGHTS OF THE AIRCRAFT IN QUESTION….

The regulations for landing a cargo jet when compared to that of a jet liner with passengers is quite different. These planes must be able to abort their landing if necessary and climb to a safe altitude in the event of an emergency. Research these distinctions or ask a pilot before posting comments. Log on the FAA Website and read their requirements before certification is granted.

No way this aircraft lands in Dominica.

I’m not sure it will but it certainly can. The runway at Melville Hall measures 5,249 ft. and the MD80 (orMD82 in this case) can safely operate within 5,000ft. (depending on weather conditions). It hink it is more a question of load factors. The max pax (passenger load) for a MD82 is 172 but more typically it operates with 155. LIAT are struggling to get enough bottoms-on seats out of Melville Hall on their Dash-8’s with a passenger capacity of less than half that. Maybe more people would fly if the fares were lower and also the announced easying of travel restrictions within the region would help but right now they are just “may be’s”. Unless we can improve load factors there is not much point inn even discussing a fully internaitonal airport or extended night time operations as much as we may wish it be different (….and I am one of those!).

what about missed approach and morne diablotin? are u fogetting land topography?dominica is not one of those flat islands with no obstacle at both end that will allow for an aircraft to approach at a discent altitude that you dont have to go into a steep dive …all the ppl talking about amerijet landing at melvillehall have u ever seen it approaching and how it has to take that steep dive after clearing the mountain??do u know how many times amerijet has had to do miss approach??i am prepared to eat all the grass in dominica if an md 80 lands at melvillehall safefly at full capacity with baggage on board…what is the landing weight for the md80??? required runway length for landing is 1.5 miles and take off is 2.270 miles..lets suppose it lands here saftely how do you intend for it to take off when melville hass is no where close to 1.6 miles in length far more for the 2.70miles thats recommended…

low fare huh, sould be making stops to dca.i firmly believe if liat were to lower their fares they would be making more $$.the lower fares the more travellers id think.ppl dont travel simply bcuz the fares r too costly to be traveling as often.instead of $1000+ for ticket to a place like sxm,if it were $6-700.00,some ppl wud be traveling evry fort night jus for the fun of it.but most ppl who travel are ppl that have to travel.whereas before some1 would take a trip foreign just to go see their spouse for the weekend every fortnight.but is time for some nice times again.i well want to take some island tours but liat fares not nice.

@ NO BS. Winare prices were not significantly lower than LIAT. They were pretty much on par with LIAT. I compared their prices a few time and the different was usually with $20. So doh try dat.

        February 11, 2011

WELL I CAN ASSURE YOU THAT AMERIJET DOSN[T EVEN COME TO DOMINICA WITH 1/4 OF ITS
CAPACITY……GOOD EXAMPLE WHEN THE SOUTH AFRICANS WERE HERE PLAYING CRICKET AMERIJET HAD TO MAKE 2 TRIPS TO BRINGING ABOUT 15000 LBS OF CARGO WHERE AS THEY TOOK IN ALL IN 1 TRIP ON THE WAY OUT…

WITH A CAPACITY LOAD REDJET CAN’T LAND IN DOMINICA…

      • Happiness Ka Fan Cho Mwen!
        February 12, 2011

Stain Master—-Amerijet is CARGO they do not need a lot of running distance. (and you cannot compare these planes with passenger airlines – they are built differently). Go to Redjet website and see the size of the planes. The only way they can come is if they have CRJ 700, Embraer 135, Embraer 140 and another which is am not too sure about…

Or the can have the jet-powered turboprop aircraft like the eagle that comes into Dominica.

Doesn’t Aa land in Dominica? I don’t know them to have anything less than jets right? It’s clear you don’t travel so stay silent if you don’t know. Just say you don’t know

It is an MD80/90 similar to a Boeing 727 in size. Not sure if the runway at m/hall is long enough but I am “almost” sure it can make it. Let the pilots in Dca give us a heads up. Hail Mary Full Of Grace..

    • Cassandra
      February 11, 2011

Runway is long enough. A 727 from Amerijet has been landing there every week for years.Yes, I know it is a freighter but a 727 nonetheless and bigger/heavier than a Fokker 100. Also, the Venezuelans have operated a passenger configurated 737 at Melville Hall, coming in from from the sea no less. How ligit this was I don’t know but they managed to get in & out without difficulty.

PS. Before we write off this attempt it is perhaps good to recall the beginnings of Easyjet and Ryanair, who were given no chance either against the established competition.

WHAT IS THE CURRENT LENGHT OF THE MELVILLEHALL AIRSTRIP????DO YOU KNOW THE MINIMUM AIRSTRIP LENGHT REQUIRED BY THIS TYPE OF AIRCRAFT FOR SAFE LANDING?

  13. liat me seh
    February 11, 2011

well i guess you guys can always dream on..this plane looks like the fokker 100 and if it is don’t think it will be landing in da..runway not long enough..so i wont get excited if i were you guys

Admin: this is not the only type of airplane owned by the airline.

    • Scorpio
      February 11, 2011

A Fokker 100 is smaller than this aircraft and can easily land in D/ca. That wouldn’t even be my concern, Its the supporting equipment and arrival terminal I fear would be inadequate .

    February 11, 2011

Perhaps they should talk to Allan Stanford. He came with a similar model and he was losing money in spades.

Now with Caribbean Airlines wanting to come on the scene, there is not a hope in hell these guys are going to survive. These guys are heavily subsidized by the T’dad government. How are the new players going to compete?

We have seen so many big announcements go nowhere. I am not going to believe that one until I see a plane in the sky.

  15. Cerberus
    February 11, 2011

Really hope these guys pull it off and that Dominica too will benefit from this development. A big “V” for free enterprise and one in the eye for Ralph!

it can land in Dominica though. It’s a little bigger than them bigger Liat planes and AE. It looks about the same size as the cargo jet planes. Question is would they bother to land here
