Whale watching in Dominica has been recognized among the ten best Caribbean adventures for 2013 by Caribbean Journal.

The list was compiled for those who are seeking “a little thrill” — even if one is  just visiting one of the Caribbean islands for the day.

“With all of the spectacular views within Dominica, it may be hard to imagine the need to get on a boat and head out to sea,” the Caribbean Journal wrote. “But Dominica is unique in the world in that it has a year-round Sperm Whale population (and several other resident species) and the Anchorage Hotel Whale Watch and Dive Center has been doing these trips for more than two decades.”

In January, Dominica was named the ‘Whale watching capital of the Caribbean’ by travel website cheapflights.com.

Sorry to be negative but …
I have probably been on whale watching trips in DA 5 or 6 times over the years when visiting from London.
On the most recent trip, the Anchorage had apparently got a large/late booking from a cruise ship. They wanted us to use an unsuitable “net decked” catamaran (more a sunbathing boat) rather than the “Misers Dream” as promised.
After much toing, froing, confusion and my very clear objections, they packed the boat shoulder to shoulder with people.
Some were concerned that the boat was overloaded, others refused to board when they saw the degree of crowding.
The trip was a complete shambles and departure was probably delayed by an hour.
On the trip before that, we had booked for a whale watching trip – which they cancelled at the last second as they “did not have enough people”.
This was equally as annoying as we would happily have paid double or treble for an exclusive trip anyway if given the option.
I am sorry to say that the visitor experience of Dominica generally has not improved much in the 30 years I have been visiting.
It has if anything lost some of the quaintness that it once had.
Just look at Roseau where when I first visited with my family, we sat on the old sea wall and joined the local kids fishing with twine.
Now there is just the ugly cruise ship terminal and a load of tourists who don’t venture far from the boat because the first impression is so poor.

It isn’t just the physical aspects that disappoint.
At Cabrits, where some really good restoration work has been done, our Dominican friends refused point blank to go in becasue of ther plain rudeness of the woman demanding the passes.
Our most recent trip on Indian river was spoiled by the guide – a grown man who sulked in silence like a child the entire time for reasons he kept to himself.
The aerial tram was not open for business on a recent trip because the cruise ship wasn’t in port – and by the last trip was closed completely.

“Champagne” at Soufriere was ruined by the boardwalk – the first time I have queued to get into the sea!

    Sorry to go on.
It is just because I actually do care and sympathise.

I have just lost patience by now.
There seems to ne no interest in attracting my generation back – which will mean the loss to DA of our children’s support also.
We had thought of investing/retiring to DA – but our experience of dealing with the courts system, lawyers and the land registry has ruled that out completely.

Yeah, people will pay for a plane ticket to Dominica to see a fish. Immigration officer: “Where are you traveling to?” Ann: “To Dominica.” Immigration: “Purpose of your trip?” Ann: “To see a fish.” Immigration officer fainted.

Are these the kinds of whales the Japanese like to hunt? Is Japan allowed to hunt whales off the coast of Dominica? If so that would not be good.

Something to be proud of. We need more of this and more establishments willing to invest in real attractions. If it’s good for the country it’s good for us. I’m booking to take my family now.

Thank you to anchorage for doing the Government job for them, for doing the tourism office job for them. It’s these little ‘advertisements’ that keep us going. Still waiting to see one advertisement of Dominica in England.

Why do we feel compelled to point out a negative when given the opportunity to appreciate the positive. Celebrate our accomplishments and more will be driven to to achieve.

Mr.Ismael, I’m not going to comment on your post. I would just like to know why do you think there is a need for an international airport in Dominica.

You see how things are in the world, some countries have their international airport like skelton, somtimes with 2 to 3 flights sometimes less. When all you finish is the PM all u will blame and say tax payers have to pay it back.
