CARICOM has designated Dr. Leslie Wade, of St. Kitts and Nevis as the new Permanent Observer to the United Nations (UN) to ensure representation at relevant UN gatherings and to foster diplomatic relations for the CARICOM Secretariat.
Dr Wade submitted her credentials to UN Secretary-General António Guterres on December 5 in New York.
She brings with her nearly forty years of experience within the UN system, spanning from 1985 to 2023. Most recently, she served as the Director in the Office of Intergovernmental Support and Coordination for Sustainable Development within the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA). Wade also held the role of Senior Liaison Officer at the World Health Organization (WHO) in New York and worked in the Office of the Special Adviser on Africa and the Least Developed Countries (OSCAL).
Her previous positions include serving as an Economic Affairs Officer focused on Regional Economic Integration and Trade at the UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) with postings in Santiago, Chile; Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago; and Mexico City, Mexico.
Dr. Wade has participated in Peacekeeping Missions in Namibia (1989-1990) and Cambodia (1992-1993), as well as Electoral Assistance Missions in El Salvador and Mozambique in 1994.
Among her significant contributions is the creation of the proposal for establishing the ECOSOC Ad Hoc Advisory Group on African Countries Emerging from Conflict, which stemmed from the General Assembly’s response to Kofi Annan’s pivotal 1998 report on the roots of conflict and the promotion of lasting peace and sustainable development in Africa.
Dr. Wade is the fifth individual to hold the position of CARICOM’s Permanent Observer to the UN. The role was first filled by Mr. Hamid Mohamed from 1995 to 2005, followed by Mr. Miles Stoby (2005-2006), Ambassador Noel Sinclair (2007-2014), and Ambassador Missouri Sherman-Peter (2014-2023).
