The CARICOM Youth Ambassadors of Dominica held an Orange Day Symposium on Saturday to identify ways of curbing violence against women and to assist in creating awareness of the problem.
According to Ambassador Natasha Jervier, Orange Day is usually held on the 25th of each month but since the 25th fell on a Sunday in November, the event was held on Saturday the 24th, instead.
Jervier, together with her fellow youth ambassador Dalton Maronie, helped those in attendance look at the objectives of the day on a school, community and national level. “The participants also created together a group statement or declaration where they took a stand against violence. They all signed the declaration, pledging to do their part,” Jervier said.
She said schools and groups which attended the symposium included St.Mary’s Academy, St.Martin Secondary, Dominica Grammar School, Goodwill Secondary, Dominica State College, Isaiah Thomas Secondary, National Youth Council, Youth Advocacy Movement, Interact Club of St. Martin Secondary, Cathedral Young Catholic Christians, Rotaract Club and Youth Talk Through The Arts.
Jervier pointed out that she was particularly impressed with the male attendance. “The males were present in large numbers and they were actively involved,” she said.
Presenters were: Gloria Agustus, Fenella Wenham, Ophelia Linton, Delia Cuffy-Weekes and Kondwanie Williams.
Even CARICOM Secretary General Irwin Larocque, in Dominica for the OECS summit, dropped by to show his support. He addressed the young participants and expressed his pleasure with the activity.
Orange Day is spearheaded by the Global UNITE Campaign and is an initiative of CARICOM Youth Ambassadors throughout the region.
boy i missed this. not in dec
interesting…i like..but all i hear and see in dominica is talk talk talk and more talk…no action is being taken..talk is pretty and easily said and stated argued discussed on paper in groups..but we need to put action in these areas….for years theres been talks, symposiums, discussions, etc…when r the rightful persons gon take hard actions and place some harsher punishments that will set examples for others.
Way to go young people! There are positive traits in you…make your mark!!!
let’s hope these young people becoming an integral part of our nation’s developmental thrust… they are surely an asset
