CCM continues campaign for electoral reform; writes to police chief

The Concerned Citizens Movement (CCM) is continuing its campaign for electoral reform with a public meeting to be held on Sunday June 30th, 2019  from 3:00 pm at The River Bank (The Arch).

CCM President, Loftus Durand, in a letter dated on June 11th, 2019 has written to the Chief of Police informing him of the meeting.

“The Concerned Citizens Movement (CCM) hereby informs you of its intention to convene a public meeting, to discuss matters related to Electoral Reform, at 3:00  p.m. on Sunday June 30th, 2019 at the Riverside Place (The Arch), between the E. C. Loblack Bridge and the New Bridge which links Great George Street to the south and Steber Street to the north,” Durand states in the letter.

The CCM also extends an invitation to the police chief ” to allow a representative of the Dominica Police Force the opportunity to address the audience on the importance to maintain law and order, with respect for the police, especially as the general election campaign intensifies.”

The letter also states that an open invitation is extended to the general public, “and it is expected to be a family event aimed at educating the population on the need for electoral reform, more specifically, the need for the cleansing of the electoral list and the issuance of voter identification cards before the next general elections.”

According to the information provided to the police chief, the meeting will begin with a one-hour session of prayer and praise, followed by speeches by political, religious, business, trade union, youth, women and civil society organization leaders.

“The Concerned Citizens Movement (CCM) requests the cooperation of the Police in facilitating the necessary traffic and security facilities for the event,” the letter concludes.

The CCM has launched a PayPal account to help raise funds for the event. The link is posted below.

We want an updated and accurate voters list and we shall have it. We want people voting with an authorized ID and we shall have it. The blood of maroon slaves runs through our veins, remember that. Our ancestors who died for our freedom must be in anguish now, weeping over what Dominica has become. A Skerrit plantation. Hear the voice of our ancestors. Take heed. We will never be enslaved again. Free up the people. Skerrit! Let my people go! This is not China, not Cuba or Venezuela. Take your agenda and GO. We will not have it here.

  3. Give us electoral reform now
    June 21, 2019

Why are these… :-D Skerritites afraid of a little public meeting? It’s not the meeting you’re scared of, its the cleaning of the list, it’s the issuing of a voters ID. When those two things happen you won’t be able to cheat like you have in past elections  You cannot stop the movement. The young voters of Dominica are seeing your party for the farce that it is. Give us free and fair elections, re-register all the voters if you have to, then we shall see what the people of Dominica really want.

Mr. Durand, according to your letter, it reads you are informing the the police of your intention of a meeting on Sunday 30th June 2019 starting at 3:00 pm. but there was no mention of when the meeting will end. Was that intentionally done so that when the police ask you to stop, another FEBRUARY 7th will take place?
Or is it that the police cannot tell you when to stop and you can go on as long as you want with your meeting?! Just being curious because one will recall the Leader of the opposition Lennox once said the police cannot dictate to him what time he can start his meeting and when to stop. He can go on as long as he wants and finish when he wants. Don’t know if this is the trend of having meetings in Dominica.

Don’t get weary of agitating for these necessary electoral reforms. The business sector should take the lead in bringing all business activities to a complete halt if Skerrit continues to play hardball. Too many protest initiatives are left to the politicians, the rest of civil society must do its part. The business sector, the clergy, the labour unions, the media, and all NGO groups must come together and organize the Mother of All Marches and put Roseau on lockdown. See what the people of Hong Kong did to get their government from passing extradition legislation? Dominicans wake up and take a stand. Take back your country from the jaws of a greedy, corrupt ,villainous GLUTTON.

Durand you cannot inform the POLICE COMMISSIONER that you are having a meeting in a PUBLIC PLACE.You MUST ask PERMISSION to hold a meeting in a PUBLIC PLACE ,to wit River Bank .You are deliberately seeking confrontation with the Police. That is the LAW.

CCM tell me why you think it is necessary to post such information for public consumption?? the letter you had to write to the commissioner is to request permission to utilize the road so they can cuddle off the necessary streets…

Joe Linton, so that no one can claim that permission was not sought. Trying to avoid the flimsy excuses for the police to directly attack women and children with canisters of teargas. Got it?

I admire the efforts of Mr. Durand but my suspicion is, his hard work will be futile given the resistance of this corrupt government coupled with an obsession to win at any cost. With electoral reform that includes cleansing of the list and restricting the influence of illegal overseas voters, it will be impossible for the DLP to win an election in Dominica.
