Council Chairman calls for immediate attention to be placed on Marigot Hospital

A cement truck and a Honda SUV collided

Chairman of the Marigot Village Council, Egbert Jeremy, is calling on the government to place immediate attention on the much-talked-about Marigot Hospital.

His comments came following a tragic accident which occurred in that community on Tuesday leaving one young lady dead.

The Marigot Hospital was shut down in 2016 due to mold and fungus infestation and before that, it was shut down because of a severe termite infection.

“We are appealing to whoever it is; we need our hospital or even a Trauma Centre in Marigot,” Jeremy said during an interview on Q-95 Radio Hot Seat Programme on Wednesday.

According to him, one cannot prevent death, however what he witnessed yesterday brought sadness to his heart.

Jeremy believes that if the Marigot Hospital was functional, the young lady may have survived, while the other individuals who were involved in that accident could be properly stabilized.

“I know what has been happening in Marigot for the longest while. Our hospital was demolished and we have promises that we should get a hospital very soon and the people are really pussyfooting on that situation; they are not doing anything,” he complained.

He called on Marigot residents to come together to do something about what is happening there.

“We are being placed on the back burner and we only get sometimes, what is left behind,” Jeremy remarked.

He is also appealing to the rest of the Dominican population to join residents of Marigot to dialogue with those in charge to do something about what is happening in Dominica and Marigot.

In May 2018, Health Minister Dr. Kenneth Darroux, said site clearing for the construction of the Marigot Hospital began in May 2018.

The Government has already announced that the Government of Mexico had committed US$5-million for the construction of the hospital.

In March this year, Darroux said the government was awaiting the designs from the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), to construct the hospital.

    I agree that we need upgraded health facilities in every corner of the island specifically urgent care centres to stabilize emergencies before being sent to the main hospital. We must consider the feasibility of major health facilities throughout the island. (a discussion for another day). But before jumping on a political bandwagon, we must primarily advocate for road safety. Our terrain does not call for the risky driving that I usually experienced;
This driver had his music so loud that he didn’t hear us honking around the corner, luckily we were aware of him and was able to swerve him.
Heading towards the canefield stretch, this guy was driving so fast that he lost control at the turn and the vehicle spiralled out of control.
A driver overtaking a number of vehicles on a stretch on the way Portsmouth, bad idea since a truck was rounding the corner that same time, forward-thinking saved his life.

The country’s main airport is in Marigot, yet no hospital there for miles, what sense does that make? Say something happens to a plane? How do you deal with the 30 something + people on board? Bus them all to town? Yet Skerrit will come and talk about “Extending public office hours”, and raising retirement age, and how we have how much hotels. Say a plane full of people coming to the Kenpachi Hotel and the landing gear failed…what then?

Egbert,  you should go on Radio and suggest that the entire nation demand Roosevelt Skerrit tell us what has he done with the millions of United States dollars the  people, and government of Mexico gave to him to build a new hospital in the village of Marigot?

Where is the money Roosevelt received from the Government Mexico to build a new hospital in the village of Marigot? I would hope that that money is not in the pocket of some politician in the country, or sleeping somewhere, waiting to be used to buy votes and bribe people next election.

This is a situation where the Marigot representative, in the House of Parliament and the village council should make an effort to contact and informed the government Mexico that the present government of Dominica, probable missed appropriated the money granted to build the hospital in the village of Marigot.

It’s all about corruption; a foreign country Mexico where there are as much poor as Dominica help: the money seems missed…

Marigot does not have a hospital because discrimination is alive and well in DA. People from other parts of DA are seeing the terrible treatment dished out to Marigot, yet, they say and do nothing. In some cases, they are even implying that the people of Marigot deserve it. Such a shame. People are sitting by laughing because they get a few dollars while their brothers who stand up for their beliefs are prosecuted. The light might come, but it will be too late for many.

There is a difference in discrimination, and victimization!

What Roosevelt is actually doing is victimizing the people of Marigot and Wesley, by depriving our people the privilege of having a functional Hospital in the community. Marigot Hospital has served the people Wesley, Woodford Hill, Marigot and the Carib Reserve for more than a hundred years.

Roosevelt allow it to decay and fall into disrepair because the people of Wesley and Marigot has rejected him and his party, and will never cast vote for that corrupted crook!

It took Roosevelt eighteen years to destroy the entire nation; all of our educational institutions, post office, court house, and other governmental buildings.

Take a look at what is going on at the main hospital; the Princess Margret hospital. Why would anybody with commonsense vote for Roosevelt Skerrit only to allow him to take the country spiraling downwards without any chance of progress in the hands of that corrupted clown!

This is why our Government will have the Eastern Caribbean Civil Aviation Authority as their governing body and not the FAA. The FAA will never approve of a commercial Airport without a Hospital in the vicinity.

Please ask the pertinent questions. Why are we still under the ECCAA?

This is because the FAA will never allow commercial flights into a jungle airport with no hospitals near.

Dominica is 29 miles long. How far can a airport be from a hospital? So the new Marigot hospital is not built yet. So are here medical facilities close ? How long does it take from the hospital in goodwill ?

Mr, Egbert Jeremy, please for once stop playing on people emotions for political gains. I sympathize to the young lady and family lost her life. But Jeremy not for once all u blame those reckless drivers that caused people to loose their life in does accidents. Its time u call out to those foolish and reckless drivers and stopped that foolish blame. The USA has major hospitals and people still dies from accidents. If that driver as being careful on the road, the lady might still be alive today. Get to the real problem stop pushing your Team Dominica agenda

    • Lala
      December 12, 2018

U completely missed the point. Yes reckless driving happens; the fact is it happened and there was no health facility in sight that could have possibly saved her and the young man that died. So what if the accident was one where it wasn’t anyone’s fault would that have been a better reasoning for the need for the hospital.

      • Tee Toe
        December 13, 2018

But there are accidents which happen within the vicinity of major hospitals around the world and the victims still loose their lives. So u missed the points. 80% of our fatal accidents that are occurring in Dominica, including the one at Marigot is reckless and foolish driving. So even if their was a major hospital in Marigot the lady could have survive or maybe she would still be dead. But if the driver was careful on the road, this accident would have avoided. That’s the point, I hope u get it.

      • Sneeze
        December 13, 2018

A hospital is not a speed bump or a driver’s education school. These things are in place to deter reckless driving and help prevent accidents. A hospital is there to deal with injuries which include injuries from accidents. The vehicle hit a truck this time. It could have been a bus full of people it hit, would your reasoning be the same then? Would the passengers be reckless too? Ofcourse you missed the point. Accidents happen whether the cause is human recklessness, road failure or just freak accident. All avenues must be exhausted when it comes to saving lives. @tee toe

Awaiting funds from Mexico; awaiting designs from UN. Excuses after excuses. I’m NOT pro labor or pro UWP. As a neutral bystander, this is utter incompetence of the current leadership to provide these basic services. To have your second capital hospital shut down due to mold and fungus infestation in 2018, there’s no reasonable excuse for this. This is a sad day for the hometown that launched this party into power for the last 18 years. What a way to pay them back…

Not so much excuses but rather blatant lies. That is how Skerrit has governed Dominica in the last 15 years and his blind supporters allow him to continue to do so.

It’s time to reconsider our priorities on the island. Our human resource is one of the most important resources that we have on island, given our tiny population. Improving the health services sector is a win for all and sundry. Those who love to jump and defend Skerrit and turn every constructive criticism into a “Let’s defend Skerrit to the hilt,” must understand that the entire country is at a huge loss, each time we lose one of our valued citizens, especially if we can assist to protect and preserve precious lives. This is an undertaking that must be priority for “Isle of beauty and Isle of Splendor.” When you spend 18 million on a bridge in Roseau and hold big opening ceremony for your supporters, there is a tendency to forget critical sectors like health care services.

Winning elections are given priority over the people’s wellbeing, welfare and health. Why is every public entity in Dominica so broken? The entire governmental service is woefully dysfunctional. Nothing seems to work. Healthcare is the absolute worst of all the public sectors. Yet, the Minister of Health was recently rewarded with an avenue named in his honor. Dominica is truly unique. It’s the only country in the world where a Minister of Cabinet is rewarded for mediocrity and subjecting the hardworking and underpaid nurses to public shaming. Look around at Antigua & Barbuda, Grenada and tiny St. Kitts & Nevis, all are pushing above their weight while Dominica is stagnated, in fact, going backward in time.

The present regime wins by subterfuge, machinations, chicanery, bribery and down right trickery. It’s the wilful manipulation of the electoral laws that has the DLP in power. If meaningful reforms were put in place as suggested by the Commonwealth mission and the OAS, where all the loopholes to fraudulence were closed, the outcome would have been different. The many thousands of overseas voters, bribed by a free plane ride and swayed by misinformation, made the DLP’s victory at the last polls possible. The country is in dire need of electoral reforms.

I share these sentiments. It’s about two years and we keep hearing the same nonsense. A design should have been completed by now and going to construction. I understand the set back due to Maria but we can no longer use that excuse. I think it’s time for the government to push along with those projects else it will be one delay after the next. We are into a next election cycle and we are still talking about airport. All excavation should be near completion by now. Geothermal, don’t even know what to say. One excuse after the next. I think this government is too conservative in it’s approach especially with monies in the bank. I give them 100% grade on housing and hotel sector but there is much more to do. When are we going to see the ground braking for the airport, geothermal plant, indoor stadium, the Roseau redevelopment and promenade etc.? The week before election? Come on… These are the reasons why incompetent governments get in.

What are all these foreign governments getting in return for their investments?
Mexico’s economy isn’t doing very well for it to provide funding to an island where there is no noticeable bilateral agreements.
