Stressing that modernization is an “inalienable right of every country, not a privilege reserved for a few,” China’s State Councillor and Foreign Minister Qin Gang expressed the nation’s determination to defend the right to development of all countries with greater determination. He made the remarks at the opening ceremony of the Lanting Forum in China on ‘Chinese Modernization and the World’ in Shanghai on April 21.
“Those who have realized modernization should not tear down the bridge or block other countries’ path to modernization,” he declared at the annual event which brings together representatives of government, business, academia, and international organisations. “And they should not suppress, contain or stop other countries that choose a different path to modernization, “ Gang continued. “China has no intention to engage in major-power competition. What we are firmly defending is our own development interests and the Chinese people’s right to pursue a better life.”
He believes that throughout the last century and more, China has established its own path to modernisation and produced a new type of human growth, demonstrating that there is no fixed model of, or one solution to, modernisation.
“Any country can achieve modernization, as long as the path suits its conditions and answers the need of its people for development,” Gang asserted. “On the contrary, mechanically copying ill-fitted foreign models is counter-productive, and may even lead to catastrophic consequences.”
Given the country’s vast population, Gang believes that China’s modernisation would provide a stronger boost to global economic recovery and will pave the way for all countries to prosper together. He cited the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and the Global Development Initiative (GDI) as examples of public goods that China provides to the international community.
He also stated that China takes developing nations’ debt seriously and is actively executing the G20’s Debt Service Suspension Initiative, having already contributed up to 63 per cent of total debt payments suspended. As further stated, Chinese modernization will give new vigour and vitality to the Chinese culture, as well as contribute more Chinese wisdom to global peace and prosperity, and human progress.
“We envision a better world in which all civilizations prosper from generation to generation through constant self-renewal, enjoying both material abundance and cultural and ethical advancement.” According to Gang, the modernization of China with human-nature harmony will provide a more realistic road to a clean and beautiful planet.
He declared that the country will remain devoted to peaceful growth while developing a new style of international relations based on mutual respect, fairness, justice, and win-win collaboration.
“We will work with all countries to build an open, inclusive, clean, and beautiful world of lasting peace, universal security, and common prosperity, and develop a community with a shared future for mankind,” Gang stated.
He also revealed that the country will invest more resources in global development cooperation while doing its utmost to help relieve the debt burdens of developing countries.
“We will endeavour to save international financial and currency circulation from the plight of speculation, manipulation, sanction, and pressuring, and help it return to its fundamental purpose of serving the real economy and promoting modernization,” the state official made known.
He went on to pledge the country’s willingness to promote more active exchanges among civilizations and to call on other countries to promote peace, development, equity, justice, democracy, and freedom — humanity’s common values — and to let cultural exchanges transcend estrangement, mutual learning transcends clashes, and coexistence transcend arrogance.
In the process of “working more vigorously” for a community of all life on Earth, Gang expressed their commitment to increase efforts to build a sound economic structure that facilitates green, low-carbon, and circular development, as well as promote a transition to green economic and social development across the board to address the global issue of climate change.
Meanwhile, attendees at the Lanting Forum, including former Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff, praised Chinese development, stressing that it showed the world an alternative route. She claimed that for centuries, Latin American countries had been subordinated to the US and Europe, which imposed false modernization, first in the form of colonialism, indigenous slaughter, slavery, and mass plunder, and more recently in the form of neoliberalism, resulting in wealth being concentrated in the hands of a few people and millions of people discarded.
She believes that China’s people-centered modernization, characterised by common prosperity and excellent quality, represents a new path.
According to Gambia Foreign Minister Mamadou Tangara, China serves as a light of hope for all developing countries and represents the truth that humanity has a common future.
He stated that China’s modernization, largely regarded as a miracle in the history of human progress, had motivated many developing countries to seek their own recipe for reducing poverty and promoting their national economic development and prosperity.
Tangara also noted that China has played a beneficial role in creating the global system and regional architectures to change Africa’s development goal and prevent “the perception of the continent as a place synonymous with brazen impoverishment.”
The Lanting Forum was founded in 2010 by China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs as a communication platform for governments, enterprises, academic circles, the media, and the general public to discuss public topics such as China’s foreign policy. The full-day event included panel discussions on issues such as China’s new development, improved global governance, and closer people-to-people exchanges. It was held at the Meet-the-World Lounge located alongside the Huangpu River in Shanghai.
This is the first time that the Forum has been conducted outside of Beijing.

I salute China’s rise to the superpower that it is today. It came about defying all odds. Unlike America, its enormous largesse ($$$$$) is not used to invade and topple governments around the world like America does, to indiscriminately impose sanctions bypassing the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), to carry out covert and clandestine operation like the bombing of NORD STREAM….Its largesse is to improve the lives of others. It’s not perfect, but it’s all humanitarian. The world has come to the realisation that it has to live and adapt to your rise, and work with you.
