Chinese electric midi-buses coming to Dominica

Electric midi-buses are slated to be on Dominican roads soon. Chinese company, Tantech Holdings Ltd, announced on Tuesday that it has signed a contract to export the vehicles to the island.

According to a press statement, the export is to be done through the company’s subsidiary, Shangchi Automobile Co., Ltd.

The statement said that the contract is one of the company’s export orders within the few past months and it reflects Tantech’s reputation in the overseas market as well as the trust that its products have attained.

“Expanding into overseas markets such as Dominica not only drives the company’s growth but also contributes to its global transition towards sustainable transportation, aligning with the Company’s vision of creating a cleaner and greener future,” the statement asserted.

CEO of Tantech described the order as a “milestone” for his company.

“This order represents a milestone for our company as we continue to lead the way in the rapidly growing electric vehicle market,” he remarked, according to the press statement.

“It demonstrates the trust and confidence that our partners have placed in our products, technology, and expertise. It opens up more opportunities for our company. Let us continue to push the boundaries of innovation, while ensuring our electric vehicles exceed customer expectations and continue to set new industry standards. Together, we will deliver excellence, establish lasting partnerships, and make a positive impact on the world.”

The press statement did not say how many of the vehicles will be exported to Dominica nor did it reveal whether the contract was signed with a private company or with the government.

Similarly, it did not give a timeline as to when they will arrive on the island. There’s been no announcement by the government of Dominica on the contract. The press statement did give a description of the vehicles.

“Measuring 6 meters long and close to 2 meters wide, the midi-bus has 17 air-conditioned PVC seats and a wide-body design that provides ample space, allowing passengers to have a comfortable and enjoyable ride,” the statement said.

“In addition, this midi-bus is quieter than its internal combustion engine counterpart, an attribute that provides a more peaceful and restful ambiance, making it easier for conversations and relaxation during the journey. In the meantime, this electric vehicle produces zero emissions while driving, contributing to a cleaner and healthier environment.”

According to definition.net, a midi-bus is “a single-decker bus, generally smaller than a traditional bus but larger than a minibus.”  Tantech describes itself as a clean energy company that has “been a leading high-tech enterprise pioneering and specializing in the manufacture, research, and development of products based on bamboo charcoals with a well-established domestic and international sales and distribution network.”

It expanded into the clean vehicle industry in 2017 when it acquired a 70% share of Shangchi Automobile.

“In November 2020, Tantech established two additional subsidiaries, Lishui Smart New Energy Automobile Co., Ltd. and Zhejiang Shangchi New Energy Automobile Co., Ltd., to produce and market electric vehicles, including automatic high-speed street sweepers and others. The Company’s subsidiary, First International Commercial Factoring (Shenzhen) Co., LTD, is engaged in commercial factoring for businesses in and related to its supply chain. Tantech has recently expanded its operation into international markets,” the press statement said.

Clown, could it be that Roosevelt Skerrit owes so much to China, that it is impossible; or, no probability of China recovering the money Roosevelt owes China, and so China decided to siege Wesley in exchange for the borrowed money Roosevelt cannot repay?
Only stupid people makes comparisons between America and Dominica; for try as any idiot may, there cannot be anything in comparisons. Chines came to America, they help build the railroads, many generations of Chines are born in America, so if they own part of it they work for it; Americans did not seid it to China nor could China annex any part of America as they have done in Wesley!
The same America you idiots of Dominica, don’t like will be the America to come to the rescue of Dominica, the same as they had to free Grenada from then USSR (Russia).

    This Shall Be Dominica’s Fate!
A dozen poor countries are facing economic instability and even collapse under the weight of hundreds of billions of dollars in foreign loans, much of them from the world’s biggest and most unforgiving government lender, China.

An Associated Press analysis of a dozen countries most indebted to China — including Pakistan, Kenya, Zambia, Laos and Mongolia — found paying back that debt is consuming an ever-greater amount of the tax revenue needed to keep schools open, provide electricity and pay for food and fuel. And it’s draining foreign currency reserves these countries use to pay interest on those loans, leaving some with just months before that money is gone.

Behind the scenes is China’s reluctance to forgive debt and its extreme secrecy about how much money it has loaned and on what terms, which has kept other major lenders from stepping in to help. On top of that is the recent discovery that borrowers have been required to put cash in hidden

On top of that is the recent discovery that borrowers have been required to put cash in hidden escrow accounts that push China to the front of the line of creditors to be paid.

Countries in AP’s analysis had as much as 50% of their foreign loans from China and most were devoting more than a third of government revenue to paying off foreign debt. Two of them, Zambia and Sri Lanka, have already gone into default, unable to make even interest payments on loans financing the construction of ports, mines and power plants.

In Pakistan, millions of textile workers have been laid off because the country has too much foreign debt and can’t afford to keep the electricity on and machines running.

In Kenya, the government has held back paychecks to thousands of civil service workers to save cash to pay foreign loans. The president’s chief economic adviser tweeted last month, “Salaries or default? Take your pick.”

Since Sri Lanka defaulted a year ago, a half-million…

Fine, but are we trained to maintain these vehicles? Do we have the necessary spare parts readily available? Do we even have the charging port readily available on island or must we ask certain establishments to use theirs on their private property? I find we like to put ourselves in problems too much. We like to be in things without understanding the nuances first. all well and dandy if we get these buses, but we need to ensure that the spare parts and trained mechanics are available. I guess we will learn by trial and error.

We all know that Chinese products are not durable. Soon they will litter the landscape as derelict vehicles.

By the way, do we have the mechanics, knowledge and skills to fix the mechanical problems as they arise? Chinese mechanics and business people will be profiteering from this deal while bona fide Dominicans walk the breadline.

Support local bus drivers, for them to BITE your child nose for a 25 cents. Most of the shoes sold in New York are made in China.Every state in the USA has a Chinatown, one of the biggest is Carnal street in New York.At one time it was said China own the USA.The thing is supporters of UWP think they can post and say any stupidness and Dominicans will believe. There should be a public service transportation company run by the government, using those buses.I am sure IBO will agree to a decrease in bus fare, seeing that Dominica has the poorest people in the world

The Chinese produces and manufactures thousands of products. Consequently, they are always seeking new markets especially for their cheap, defective goods. They see Dominica as a dumping ground for these products.

The Chinese is gobbling up the choicest real estate, getting the multi-million dollar public contracts, littering the physical landscape of Dominica with their shoddy businesses. Soon Mandarin will replace English as the official language.

The monumental advances that China is making in this country, Dominica should be renamed Little China.

What is really the news story here? If these buses were produced in a State in the USA, would the headline read “U.S electric…?” Likely not, unless, of course, the fact that the buses are American-made is the heart of the matter. Is DNO suggesting that the real news here is that the buses are “Chinese-made?” Or, is the news the imminent arrival of electric passenger buses on our streets? We have to be careful not to support the global pro-western anti-Chinese agenda, which is as much xenophobic and racist as it is political. After all, the media must remain “neutral.”

I well tired of people throwing around all dem terms jus to shut down any kind ofa conversation. This initiative will tie in nicely with the rollout of geothermal energy. Electric vehicles is what the more developed countries are now leaning towards for cheaper and cleaner travel. Dominica is in a good position to take the lead within the region with this initiative. This should also give the government a platform to roll out a national bus service to make travel cheaper for people who depend on bus travel to go about their daily lives. With a cheaper and reliable bus service, people will be encouraged not to buy so many cars, whereby, reducing pollution and congestion which the more developed countries suffer from and trying to reduce.

I will bet the words attributed to the CEO and tge statement they put out came straight from ChatGPT or they hired someone to issue the statement.

The sentence structure and the word salad they put together is well above the level of most non-native English speakers.

But that being said, let’s see how long these busses last on the road. If they are government owned, I will give them one year.

    May 17, 2023

Who is going to be operating these buses? What are they going to be used for? Schools? Government services? Tourists?
Is this going to be a public bus service to displace private bus drivers?
How well are these vehicles going to function on our rough terrain? Where are the charging stations for them to resupply?
