COMMENTARY: Has this Skerrit-led DLP Government performed in the best interest of Dominica?

Well, I get it that civil servants are able to verify this statement as it appears, we have a one-man show running the Cabinet and the government affairs, and questions have been asked, “where are the government auditors, Financial Secretary and the Director of Audit?” Key to government`s accountability.

They appear to have been deliberately dismissive and appear to turn a blind eye to the scam of Bobols (Bin & Fertiliser), interference with states funds, our tax payers’ money that has been engaged in “alleged” corruption practices.

We have had enough of Skerrit and his failed Labour government for over nineteen (19yrs) years now and they must Go. Most of us have been shocked by the blatant misuse of states funds and we have blind loyalists who are in denial and say to us, “all you hate Skerro”, but when asked why and how, they move on with a loud stuuuuuupes. My dear people, this is where we are in Dominica, it’s all about Skerro and not our Dominica, let alone our suffering and unemployed young people and family.

Skerrit has failed us due to probably some level of immaturity, poor leadership, ignorant of the processes of socio-economic development and has reduced our struggling people to beggars. We have seen this happen numerous times at the Financial Centre.

Skerrit came into government as this immature PM upon the death of our Pierre (Pierro) Charles. The position presented this fanfare of a young, immature golden boy with dimples but with no obvious experience or plan as to how we are going to rebuild Dominica. Well, “Dimples” has failed big time. Skerrit appears to have had no induction, and no professional role models to guide him from day one as to the protocol for the development of a failing state. It is obvious that Skerrit was not prepared for this critical challenge with no long term plan for the socio-economic development of Domininca. To this year, 2019, we still have not seen nor heard of this overall meaningful development plan, but talk and more talk, while the driver drives without a map.

We have heard and witnessed the denial of Dominica’s failing economy where agricultural produce for exports has disappeared and obviously ignored and abandoned by this incompetent Labour government but we welcome many foreign unknown people through the sales of our passports. Bananas gone, limes gone, soaps gone, beers gone, tourist gone, cruise ships gone, shops are closing, tourism gone, Ross University gone, but what has to go? Skerrit and his incompetent waste of time 18 useless ministers and weird advisors must Go Now. All these have crippled our nation.

With a failed, incompetent, immature Prime Minister & 18 waste of time ministers there appears to be no team work for planning let alone implementing. Skerrit was on the road last week at Bai, Mahaut, and Gwadar, well look Roro. Skerrit has the guts and audacity to tell his crowd that “…when in Domininca you can fight your politics…but when you go out there you must be statesman.” In other words, do not talk bad of Domininca.  LOL.LOL…Is Skerrit serious?

The sale of our passports you initiated and given to any ole teeth and weird characters that has tarnished our name as we are unable to travel to Canada as a Member of the Commonwealth without a visa because that sale of passports saw all kind of nefarious, old teeth people entering Canada with our passports. Skerrit failed to screen these people because it appears he has been blind and desperate for cash, because the country`s economy is dead. The country is not generating revenue under Skerrit`s failed leadership.

Dominicans, now call for a trusted, reputable, decent and professional team to govern our nature isle and to wipe away with immediate effect, the stain and bad name this failed Skerrit corrupt government has imposed upon us. Labour government and Skerrit must Go.

We look forward to welcome Hon. Linton and his decent, professional, trusted, competent UWP Team.

Dominicans, wake up.

Retired Civil Servant

My people, even those blind followers of Skerrit, This is the question for you. Read it carefully and your assignment is, respond, answer to this question, with sufficient justification. Recall, our ailing poverty Dominica is the one to focus on also. She is in deep poverty pain.
“Where, Has this Skerrit-led DLP Government performed in the best interest of Dominica?” Please make reference to: 1. Bin Bobol 2. Fertiliser Bobol 3. Sale of our passports, 4. Disappearance of Ross University, right under his feet, and 5. Our failed, no more agriculture sector, where we no longer export. There are other lost issues, please include in your essay and let us read, analyse and comment. Nice try, Good Luck

Retired civil servant, the Skeritt administration was not responsible for Dominica loosing its visa free access to canada. This was as a result of actions by the UWP who sold passports to Chinese who then tried to enter Canada. Based on this incident the Canadian government in 2001 required Dominicans entering Canada to have visa. So Mr. Retired civil servant get your facts straight and stop spreading propaganda.

Anon, as far as I am concerned the DLP corrupted the entire passport situation.
If in todays timeline it shows and as you stated, to me 2001 and 18 years takes us to 2019 in which this failed Labour government has been n power. For 18 years it appears that you have lost in your focus that it is during this regime that passports sales escalated to all Tom Dick and Harriette and we are still awaiting for the audit and report of passport sales and how much money has been received and where this money went to. There has and has been no focus on Dominica`s socio-economic development. Skerrit needs to openly account to us as to the management of this questionable scheme. Where is our Audit Director, who audits our money? Certainly hat cannot and must not be left in the hands of Skerrit. This is serious stuff. So, 2001 and to 2019, currently we need to know who has expensed our passport money? How many passports sold to date and how much we have received and where the money went to?Answers.

Just a historical correction: The Canadian Visa requirement for Dominicans was introduced in December, 2001 under the Pierre Charles government (also introduced for Grenada), primarily due to issues surrounding the economic citizenship program (even then). At the time, economic citizens were carrying regular passports. Since that time, Canadian Visa requirements have been introduced for Antigua-Barbuda, St. Lucia, St. Kitts-Nevis and St. Vincent and the Grenadines – several of these countries also operating economic citizenship programs with questionable clients.

Holders of Diplomatic passports are also required to obtain Canadian visas.

The current prime minister wasn’t responsible for the initial decision. I leave it to others to debate whether he has made the issue better, or worse.

I know it is no comfort to Dominicans that they are not alone, nor that they were the first.

Never mind RD Diplomats Canada-Visa requirements. My Dominican girl friend regular citizen applied for a Canada Tourist Visa. She meet all Canada requieremebts at 99%. She was refused because no travel history outside Dominica? How can she have travel history. Every countries want Visa except Cuba & Colombia. Wow! Yves

“The current Prime Minister wasn’t responsible for the initial decision. I leave it to others to debate whether he has made the issue better, or worse…” The point here is that, the expectation was there that irrespective of the visa, people were entering Canada holding Dominican passports who came from elsewhere and not Dominica, but appears because of the Commonwealth Link, they would be staying in Canada. So here is the point of underneath passport sale issue to funny people, holders of Dominican passport and never been to Domininca. What does this say to you Foreign Observer? That was the issue with the Canadian Government. I am aware that visa is required as I accompanied a child Trinidad at the Canadian Embassy where she obtained a visa to join family here.

        April 8, 2019

From the inception of the economic citizenship program, now known as Citizenship by Investment, the main concern of the Canadian government was those obtaining the passports actively sought to circumvent examination under the guise of being citizens of Dominica. Whether it was their business dealings or any previous history of endeavouring to obtain a Canadian visa under their proper citizenship. All I intended to point out was that Skerritt was not Prime Minister when the visa was introduced in December 2001, as implied in the commentary itself.

The fundamental issue has always been “who are you giving your passports to?”.

And I’m glad the little girl you took to Trinidad got her visa!

That’s our point….”The current prime minister wasn’t responsible for the initial decision. I leave it to others to debate “whether he has made the issue better, or worse…”This is it, the UWP spent four years in government, a short feat and therefore this scheme was short-lived under them. I ignore excuse, especial those blind obvious ones to protect whoever. Skerrit and his failed Labour Government knew exactly what was going on because it was all over the airways, even at the end of the UWP term in office. What has made it go on for that long? Where was failed Skerrit, abandoned us and went traveling all over the world, to places like Venezuela, now a failed state to meet Bro. Chavez for fame and fortune. Skerrit and his failed DLP government has ruined our Dominica to the gutters and went out begging states for investment and also resorted to the sales of our passport, priceless to we the people of Domininca. 19 long years has passed and we still in poverty managed by…

He has made the issue better, or worse…? The latter obviously, Worse! The question of whether Skerrit has made this better or worse, obviously, he made it worse, because although the UWP initiated this programme, there was no concern nor questions that UWP corrupted the programme. The UWP mission was to gain extra financial resources for the state. Recall UWP exited office after four years. This current corrupt Labour government under extremely immature Prime Minister went like a zoom, saw the opportunity to made quick cash at the states expense of abusing our state identity, a prolific piece of document and sold to many questionable subjects which resulted up to this day weird, nefarious people are now Dominicans(?) travelling all over and everywhere with our passports at their on convenience while they left their own state/nationality passport at their homes, not present to immigrations at many countries they travelled to. UWP knew well what this DLP was doing with our passport.

The reality is that Dominicans have become beggars and sycophants…accepting that a leader in our democratic constitution is given carte blanche rights as a Dictator …we as citizens must get over our simple fascination and demand respect from this leader…
He has introduced the arrest of anyone who dares to speak out against his system he now dismissed the 3 rministers with doctorate degrees whilst he shamelessly paraded as a Dr.not one but 2 farcical doctorates without attending a university ….what is more shameful is the degree to which he. Adds to this farce…having poor ignorant dominicans parading in ecstasy at the arrival of the Dr …Dr.?!.worse yet is the amplifucarion of this ridiculous that other intellectuals who spent years in their classrooms endorsed this circus to gain points for greed and gain …

It’s because of the failure I have decided to vote in the next election for a UWP I once didn’t like because to me, pm has left us in a predicament between life and death and therefore I choosing life. I’ve always supported the DLP and Skerrit in particular. But see where we are today after 15 yrs? Not only have we become the poorest Caribbean island but certainly the most evil one. Yes we went through Erika and Maria but didn’t PM and his friends go through them as well. Why is it such a damn broke story for us while it one of great wealth collection for him and his friends? PM has flat out destroyed Da and took all what we had such as Ross University, an international airport, our jobs, our young people etc and sent them abroad as if he is on a mission to leave us broke, hopelessness, defeated and in utter hell. Welcome on board, spread the news. It`s people like you and I who will help save this nature Isle from this incompetent, corrupt, Bobolistic failed Labour party that will bring our country back, saved from this massive corruption going on now for over 18 years. In particular we have failed because of this boyish, childish immature Skerrit who has showed that lack of political sensitivity, lacks knowledge of socio-economic development and has aligned himself poorly ignoring Dominica`s qualified best, studied under our tax money, returned home to serve and this Skerrit lead corrupt, hopeless Labour government has failed us and it is time that they go. We have just had enough of this Bobolistic Labour government under this babyish Skerrit government. Skerrit is not intelligent enough, nor he matured enough to be leader of a vulnerable island like Dominica. Skerrit must Go, he must really go.
Let us welcome Hon. Linton as incoming Prime Minister and his highly professional UWP Team…

When I read the headline, I thought the writer would present a story and let the reader decide whether Skerrit and his government performed in the best interest of the nation, but it seemed he/she answered the question at the very top of the article.
I do agree though that Skerrit has put our nation in a position where we are unable to generate any fund that can develop our country. Everything that has to be built requires a foreign government to fund it. The Marigot hospital is a prime example. What little funds we generate through the sale of passports are used to buy votes. Any essential service requires a donation from a foreign government. Very sad state of affairs.

Mr. John Baptiste, if you are a honest person, you will readily admit that under this protracted leadership of Mr. Sherrit, Dominica’s economic performance is underwhelming. Rather than progressing in leaps and bounds, the country has ominously retrogressed. For nineteen years, this administration has never produced a strategic development plan. Unbelievable! This in itself is a damning indictment as to the gross incompetence of this government. This current regime, by any measurement, has been a COLOSSAL FAILURE, and does not merit another day in power. Their time has long expired. What does one do with expired goods? Discard them!

Well said. You seem to have forgotten a very important fact. Skerritt by his actions is blaming his ministers for the poor state that Dominica finds itself. To fire/change/replace thirteen of your twentyone candidates in one sweep unknowing to them until he broke the news in an open address at the Londonderry convention speaks volumes. Sadly not one of them dares to open their mouth. Not one dared to speak about the ttreatment metted out to them by Skerritt. We have to ask the question is it labor party or Skerritt and Melissa party? The silence of those labor ministers tells us something. They are either incompetent, have secrets of corruption and theft hanging over their heads or they are sick. Yet Dominicans still are holding onto Skerritt coat tail. You have stated a compelling case not to re-elect Mr. Sherrit and his stooges. I’m not aware though about Melissa’s weevil pasta. The dismissal of thirteen Cabinet Ministers from the DLP slate of candidates, in the upcoming general elections, is a clear and blatant admission from Skerrit himself that his administration has failed the people. This one act is unprecedented in the history of not only Dominica but the entire Caribbean. A leader who dismissed two-thirds of his Cabinet should be dismissed too. So come next election, Skerrit should be given his bright pink slip.

The writer has every right to assess and rate the performance of the current PM as I am a firm believer that every man should be evaluated by his entire body of work and the fruits of his labor. I will not offer an opinion here one way or another on the accomplishments or failures of Mr. Skerrit as I choose to leave this up to the discretion of more keen observers and the voting public. Please be reminded; however, that Mr. Linton’s ascension to the “throne” is still very much pending as are his demonstrated levels of competence, leadership, and even weakness in the PM position. That being said, I will continue to pray for effective, honest, innovative and visionary leadership from whoever the Dominican electorate chooses.
