COMMENTARY: How Bad Does Venezuela Have to Get

Ambassador Linda S. Taglialatela

The people of Venezuela are suffering from man-made political and economic crises that have transformed a once thriving and prosperous democracy into a place beset by poverty, corruption, and repression.  More than three million Venezuelans have fled and sought refuge in other countries.  Maduro and his cronies have bled the country of its wealth, mismanaging the economy through corrupt dealings and restrictive laws and regulations that have decimated the private sector.  According to the Venezuelan human rights NGO Foro Penal, 700 political prisoners were detained and remain imprisoned in Venezuela since January 21 of this year.  Today, the average Venezuelan struggles daily to buy food and other basic amenities, and nearly 90 percent live in poverty.  The shocking photos last week of attempts to block humanitarian aid at the Colombian border speak to Maduro’s truculent indifference to the plight of Venezuelans.

The state of democracy in Venezuela has fared no better.  Maduro eroded and eventually destroyed all institutional checks on abuses of power, starting with the judiciary, before moving against the press, prosecutors, civil society, mayors and governors, and political parties. His destruction of democracy culminated in his disqualification of political rivals in advance of his claim to victory in the flawed and fraudulent presidential election of 2018.

When Maduro’s term expired in January, the democratically elected National Assembly—the only remaining legitimate democratic institution in Venezuela—voted to invoke the Venezuelan Constitution and designate Juan Guaido as Interim President of the country, as the Constitution mandates.  The United States is proud to be counted among the 51 countries that have recognized Interim President Guaido and his government.  Together, we call upon the democracies of the hemisphere, including in the Eastern Caribbean, to do the same.

Despite the dire challenges facing the Venezuelan people, there is still reluctance in some quarters to criticize the illegitimate Maduro regime.  How much more suffering do the Venezuelan people need to undergo?  How long do they need to endure violations of their human rights and economic hardship before the hemisphere finally commits to unanimous condemnation of Maduro?

No country has the right to abuse its citizens and violate their human rights.  Doing nothing when abuses are committed in one’s neighborhood is like ignoring a neighbor who abuses his family, or turning away as someone is mugged in the street.   Human rights are universal – they have to be respected, regardless of whether these are violated domestically or internationally.  The racist apartheid government of South Africa also claimed that its abuses were a “domestic matter” and that states should not “interfere.”  The international community ignored these smokescreens.  Through sanctions, isolation and criticism, South Africa was forced to yield and recognize the votes and rights of its people.

Some have proposed dialogue instead of condemnation.  It has been tried before, most recently in 2018 in the Dominican Republic.  The illegitimate Maduro regime, however, was not interested in allowing free and fair elections to take place under credible international observation.  Time and time again, these dialogues have only served as a way for Maduro to maintain his grip on power, distract the international community, diffuse international pressure, and erode street pressure.

Countries that have supported democratic values elsewhere throughout the world should do the same in Venezuela.  Countries that have suffered from disenfranchisement, lack of self-determination, or repression of dissent should know all too well Venezuelans’ plight.  We understand this is not an easy decision, especially for those still saddled by Venezuelan debts accrued from years of cheap Venezuelan credit aimed to curry support in the region.  We urge the region to uphold its democratic values for fellow Venezuelans – Caribbean brothers and sisters – just as they would surely do if any other Caribbean nations ever found themselves under a similarly abusive regime.

These Caribbean countries which are stuck in the cold war mindset and those of the once large group of nonaligned countries are carrying the joke too far. The Maduro regime isn’t the only ones who can govern Venezuela and since it is corrupt and out of whack it has to be replaced. With the poor results of West Indies cricket recently many were calling for the board members to be replaced. Did they say that the governance of West Indies Cricket should be by the governments? No. They were calling for fresh persons with fresh ideas. Lunacy is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different outcome. Therefore it’s time that the people of Venezuela be given a chance to choose freely who will govern them for the near future. The talk of territorial integrity and none interference does not fill the stomachs of hungry people. When the cause of that hunger is a delusional leader he has to go.

Reading all these comments about the USA and Venezuela from the Dominican prospective makes me wonder.
Looking at what is taking place in Dominica which is governed by the current leadership is not far from what is said about the USA or Venezuela.
Look closer and pay attention to the Indigenous people in Dominica. The amount of racism they have to put up with every day is and should be grave concerns to all Dominicans.
Please stop pretending and being hypocrites, love and respect should not be given only when your believe it’s
a subject or the talking point for a conversation.

DNO , allow me to post something about the Munich Security Conference going on in Germany and addressed by USA Vice President Pence. In his speech he gave an ultimatum to USA NATO allies : spend 2% of GDP on defense by 2024, spend 20% of GDP by 2024 on defense spending procurement……or else….USA will withdraw from NATO. The threat is the impact this withdrawal could have on global strategic defense environment. This 20 % to exclude the additional “just and fair contributions” to NATO.
This demonstrate that USA “BIG STICK” diplomacy is alive and well, their extreme manipulation in foreign policy is going strong.
An other prospect is the influence of the USA gun lobby who control the manufacture of weapons and ammunitions, internationally. USA is the biggest producers of arms. So who will benefit the most from arms productions and sale with this 2% and 20% arms expenditure. Are we talking trillions of dollars.
I see the invasion of Venezuela as an oil dollar…

Now don’t get me wrong. Not all Americans are bad. Only 30 % are inclined to follow the 1% who controlled wealth. And that 1% don’t really care if you are alive or well. Only when you go against their interest they come looking for you. Otherwise to them you do not exist. You are just a number, a statistic. About 70% of Americans are descent people. Fair and generous. They are always ready to give you a break, to give you a second chance, to come to your rescue. In time of disaster they are the first responders, even before those in authority. They volunteer in all aspect of life to help others. They support their church with their time and money very generously without complain.
They may not agree with all the politicians do but they never tear down their country and are always ready to defend their country even when the USA is wrong and they know it. They never put other countries ahead of theirs. Americans are very nationalistic to the point of isolationism.

DNO to put what is going on in Venezuela in proper prospective you need to get familiar with two authors. Gerjen and Rorty……. “Position of ultimate superiority can be used to justify disruption or ELEMINATIONS of cultural traditions. History is replete with acts of savagery and oppression that were given MORAL JUSTIFICATION : for example the treatment of indigenous people of North America” (my capitals)….” one’s MORAL language renders the victims as nonhuman, such by equating them as animals, children or women,” may I add to facilitate exploitation.
In that context we need to revisit the history of our Kalinago ( Carib) brothers and sisters and our present relationship with them. Big question is who condition us into that relationship with their “MORAL JUSTIFICATION” posture, extreme credibility. We have to believe all what they say. The same type of justification that is being used against Venezuela with their attributes of ultimate superiority complex and hidden…

See these people know exactly what they’re talking about. The names of Dominica, Antigua and Barbuda and St. Vincent and the Grenadines have gone into congressional records courtesy of Marco Rubio in regards to the Venezuela situation. When the situation will turn around and we may be the ones who need help you all will remember why some of us were so adamant that our governments should change their stance.

This ambassador suddenly called us Caribbean brothers and sisters because she wants us to support a USA invasion of our sister country. Last time I check I am a black man . Latinos are more kin to me than you. I cannot support a situation you have created under false pretense. You know what Bob Marley said about if you do not know your history that you will be taken for a ride. Well I know your rogue history on the pretense of regime change. I know your history of grabbing Peutu Rico and occupying Dominican Republic , Cuba and the Phillipins to name a few. am not even going on Vietnam, Egypt, Panama and the Middle East Mexico, Agenita. Your rogue reputation is history. You are no ones friend, brother or sister.

Are you planning a backlash of punishment on your “brothers and sisters who will not toe the line.” Is there a hidden warning, a threat, disguise in your so reasonable honey speech. Well some of us studied USA history, and some of us did not. So who you gonna fool.

I agree with you. America is an evil country in terms of politics but are you saying they are wrong about what’s going on in Venezuela? You get to condemn or give support of madur situation. I don’t believe usa is going to invade Venezuela well I hope not but what is going on there is wrong. What can be the excuse to prevent aid from coming to your people? Venezuela put themselves in that position buy making poor political decisions in thier economy when they bought and controls the private sector. This started from Chavez and Maduro failed to fix it. Price of a barrel of oil went down and Venezuela is hurting. If we all research and read we will understand. Their economy is based in the sale of oil at high prices

That’s a very strong statement……..i think she is speaking directly to CARICOM
“We understand this is not an easy decision, especially for those still saddled by Venezuelan debts accrued from years of cheap Venezuelan credit aimed to curry support in the region”.
i want to see how CARICOM especially will respond to this one. I not sure if Skerrit want to speak to this directly……..or any one of the CARICOM states themselves.

Time for CARICOM’s next greatest moment. Show what we are worth and stand up to the big bad US and tell them in no uncertain terms that we support Maduro in spite of all what is happening. Make sure to tell them that even if millions of people in Venezuela start dieing of hunger and disease Maduro should NOT let humanitarian aid enter the country because then he would just be playing the game of the US who really are the ones responsible for this situation.

Now I wonder if it was any CARICOM country going through what Venezuela is going through right now if they would hold this same stance.

This situation has been so enlightening. Just look at the divide of countries who support Maduro vs those who support Guaido.

On Maduro’s side we have Russia, Communist China and Cuba and the blooming Turkish dictatorship and even HEZBOLLAH.

On the other side we have nearly all the major democracies of the world. You all will make your own judgement.

Hello and good afternoon my people. Ms Taglialatela stop trying to full our people because America placed sanctions on food and medicine purchases from American owned companies. They are even preventing other countries from selling food and medicine to Venezuela. They are threatening Trinidad by saying they will prevent Caribbean Airlines from operating within America. Mueller have big investigation into Russia helping Trump steal the election but America want a guy who didn’t even run for president to be the leader. The opposition must participate in the election then if they lost and say the election was flawed then they would have a better chance of convincing people like me. America need to stay out of other countries internal politics just like they want people to respect their election process.

Why does she want us to stand against Venezuela. What kind of diplomacy is she playing. Diplomacy is practice to promote peace. when two countries have a dispute the civil thing to do is negotiate. Both Venezuela and USA are members of OAS and the UN so why not negotiate peace. CARICOM members are also members of both organization. We are friends of both nations so how can we take sides. Then how is Venezuela a threat to the USA, Latin America or the Caribbean. We can threaten the richest, the smartest , the most armed , the most powerful country in the world. The country with the most influence. That can blacklist, derisk or backlash any country. The greatest exploiter. If the USA has a cold and it breath too hard the whole world will catch colds. So why does the Ambasador want to drag us deeper in the mess and roro her country made. She has to take instruction from Trump . But how can DNO accommodate her propaganda. They should take down her post and not accept any ore from her.

    February 15, 2019

DNO, I find you complicit in propagating this one sided American propaganda against Venezuela. Is Venezuela a bastion of democracy. Of course not, neither does the US. America is a country where racism is still entrenched and police brutality against Bosch people remains a persistent problem. The Republican lawmakers have done their utmost best to restrict the voting rights of non-white citizens. The US is partly to be blamed for the humanitarian crises in Venezuela. They have imposed tight economic sanctions on the country causing a severe shortage of everyday goods. They have an embargo on oil export from Venezuela and have frozen billions of dollars in assets and cash belonging to this besieged country. The US now controls all the stories coming out of Venezuela. DNO is giving credence to the American mostly false narratives. You will never read an alternative view to the American disinformation on DNO. There are many sides to this issue.

ADMIN: There is very clear propaganda circulating (with false information) in support of various viewpoints on Venezuela.

We do want to publish an opposing view point but the other positions we have found or received so far, have been from the Maduro regime and/or filled with easily discovered misinformation once researched. Additionally, we have not received any commentaries markedly in support of Maduro’s regime.

If you can point us to a verifiably valid article in support of your claims or are willing to submit a valid commentary expressing a different view we are willing to publish it.

Thanks DNO for responding. I was once an ardent supporter of the US and their foreign policies until I started reading about the CIA, their interventions in Latin America, their wars in the Middle East, etc. When countries are at odds with the US ideology , they first impose crippling economic sanctions which hurt the ordinary people more than any other group of people. Next they monopolize the news coming out of that particular country, then they fan the flames of chaos and civil war to create maximum anarchy, lastly they give a reason for military intervention to restore peace and democratic norms. There is no graver humanitarian situation in the world presently than in Yemen. Millions of people are starving. Babies and children have been reduced to mere human skeletons. Yet the US is providing Saudi Arabia with the most modern weaponry to fight their proxy war . Do they really care about humanity. Think again and stop being so easily misled.I

If you read earlier history you will see how USA started. They killed millions of Indians and the rest are still on reservations. They bought Alaska and Lousiana but stole California and Texas from Mexico. They killed Hawaii royalty and took their kingdom from them. And their media was always supporting them and misleading the world. Their attributes have not changed, it has just been revived with Trump.

      • Ibo France
        February 16, 2019

JJ, you are spot on. The sordid history of America’s appetite for land grabbing, atrocities, assassinations, genocidal attacks is mind boggling. The US invariably uses the pretext of humanitarian grounds to justify the invasion of sovereign countries. They are the ones partly responsible for the human suffering in Venezuela by imposing food and oil sanctions, embargo then blanketing the news media with their propaganda. Ask yourself this question. Does Trump truly care about the ordinary man and woman, boy and girl in Venerable? Examine his rhetoric and actions against Latinos. This man’s administration put a policy in place to separate children, some of them just months old, from their parents. Then he locked them in cages like zoo animals. Today, probably thousands of children are still separated from their parents perhaps never to be reunited. What is needed in Venezuela are peaceful negotiations to settle all the discrepancies.

IBO france i see where you coming from yes the US has and is putting embargo on Venezuela government to help force regime to bickle under pressure. However, the struggles there gp beyond US and Venezuela. There are other players namely China and Russia who have more racism than America can begin to imagine. As i have said before America dirty laundry plays for the world to see. The problem here are the men who rule by decree and cripple the country with bad policy yet they blame everyone else. Socialist countries run by dictators like to control message and operates only on propaganda. Truth is not a priority. What is the priority is who controls the narrative. Sadly the US now has a president who has the dictatorship personality and had it not been for the US gov system earth would be up in flames. US has free press. China, Russia, and Venezuela does not so pick your poison and what you choose to believe. Your perspective is alway valuable and interesting so keep them coming.

      • Joseph John
        February 15, 2019

USA has free press. YEA. The press in the USA is controlled by big corporations. Information technology is controlled by them. As long as their interest is not affected no problem , when it is that’s or threatened all hell break loose. Why the silence on gun control, on abortion on the concentration camps on the border where children are jailed ( detained they call it). Those international corporation control it all. Oil prices, food , banking and money, the press, tourism, movies and all major industries including hospitals, medicine and jails. You never hear them suing each other. Those guys are the smartest people in the world. Did you know that they scout the universities all over the world to recruit the smartest university students , even in China and India. so do not be fooled about their talk of free press or other freedom. USA is not free. They just want the world to think so. Have you lived in the USA? It is all rigged. Everything is rigged by international corporations.

    • Joseph John
      February 15, 2019

Admin of DNO, I am not surprise that a Trump Republican is supporting the USA interference in an other countries internal affairs and you are posting her views. What the USA controlled media is not saying is that all this propaganda is a prelude to a USA invasion of Venezuela on the pretext that they are saving the people of Venezuela from starvation and from dictatorship. You want to know how USA think of Latin America and the Caribbean…….rapist, criminals, drug trafficers and illegal aliens. We are not coming from alien planets.
Big oil corporations started this invasion process since the 1st Bush for oil interest because Venezuela nationalize their own oil resources. Obama slow down the process with mild sanctions. Now we have Trump going all out. Food brokers and USA banks are in collusion with Trump to create a food security crisis, then they have the unconstitutional recognition of a man who “declared” himself president. So you give a dog a bad name and hang him.

ADMIN: A point of clarification: Guaidó did not declare himself president. He was declared interim president by the democratically elected national assembly. The assembly claims they have the right under articles 233 and 333 of their constitution citing that the last presidential election was illegitimate.

Here is a link to a news article that weighs the argument for and against the constitutionality of the move to declare Guaidó interim president: https://www.euronews.com/2019/01/27/is-it-legal-for-juan-guaido-to-be-proclaimed-venezuela-s-interim-president

For those interested, this article does not actively take a side but attempts to lay out the facts of the situation.

      • Joseph John
        February 15, 2019

The food crisis made by the USA started before the election which Juan Guaido boycotted. He did not contest then claim it was not free and fair . He boycotted as an agent of the USA interest. I take any news coming out against Munduro with a grain of salt.
If USA and their friends were sincere why not persue a diplomatic solution, through the OAS or the UN.
Remember when Venezuela was voted twice for a seat in the UN Security council. USA and friends voted no on both times because they did not like Chevez. This is not a last night thing. This started with the first President Bush over oil nationalization. This is a repeat of the backlash Mexico faced when they nationalized their oil. Mexico never recovered from the backlash. Mexico was banned from participating on the world oil market.
Munduro refused to depart from Chevez policy so he must go. DNO it is not the first time USA has attempted ragime change in Latin America, and it will not be the last. Stay tuned.

I agree with Ibo France that you are complacent in USA propaganda. You are enabling them. Here they are pretending that the are concern with the welfare of oppressed people. but the record show that they are oppressing their own people. They say nothing about black people being killed because the are gay. They say nothing about police killing innocent people, they say nothing about the KKK terrorism. Look at Peuto Rico still suffering from the effects of Harvey and the USA stopping all financial assistance. Look at gun violence killing 7 people per second . Look at more than half a million Americans homeless people and Trump want 8 billion dollars to build a wall. Over half a million people suffering because of a shut down of which he is so proud. DNO you and your friends can be taken by all this USA fake love of people. But my early lesson …if you have no love for your own, how can you love me. USA created the situation by usuing Venezuelans as agents for big oil interest. Simple

Enough said. They still cannot name any ONE of those sanctions. Just keep on regurgitating the same line. The assets that were frozen were specifically of CORRUPT government officials. You mean to tell me in Dominica is Reggie and Blackmore that have to buy food to bring in to the country? You would think it was companies like Astaphans. So why in Venezuela the freezing of the assets of government officials would prevent food entering the country?

As the suffering of the Venezuelan people continue, we, that believe in democracy have no doubt that it is just a matter of time before Venezuela is dully delivered from Maduro. However, for us in Dominica, our question to you Ambassador Linda S. Taglialatela, is how BAD does it have to get in Dominica before the US help deliver us from Skerrit, who no doubt is FAR WORSE than Maduro? We want to put vote him out but as the OAS has suggested, he is doing everything to deny us free and fair elections and now he is on a spending free buying candidates. WE NEED YOUR HELP ASAP Ambassador Linda S. Taglialatela

” Maduro and his cronies have bled the country of its wealth, mismanaging the economy through corrupt dealings and restrictive laws and regulations that have decimated the private sector. (Including Skerrit)
“Despite the dire challenges facing the Venezuelan people, there is still reluctance in some quarters to criticize the illegitimate Maduro regime. How much more suffering do the Venezuelan people need to undergo?” ((Roosvelt Skerrit)

We understand this is not an easy decision, especially for those still saddled by Venezuelan debts accrued from years of cheap Venezuelan credit aimed to curry support in the region. (Roosvelt Skerrit)
You guys think they not paying attention to what is happening. You guys think CIA dont have our pm on a list. The thought of loosing elections gets the guy paranoid cause he knows only thing that ensures his freedom is the office of PM. Skerrit has essentially controlled everything in the labour party. The rest of the folks are simply puppets.

“No country has the right to abuse its citizens and violate their human rights. ” Yet the US does exactly this everyday! I’m not saying I condone what Maduro and dem doing, but the US always acting like they are the moral compass of the world or world wide policeman…

I wish I could meet u personally to just kneel and shake your big toe. U so right. Them wicked vicious Americans playing sly fox for Venezuelan oil and playing part merciful saviour in their deception. That ambassador is either I’ll informed of the wickedness of her own country or she is another vicious hypocrite like most American government officials

Go drink some water and take several seats..You all still under the spell to think that this world is fair?..America might commit some atrocities from time to time, and they have to look out for the interest of their citizens also, but can you name one single nation that you trust to do better for humankind than the USA?..If not for The USA many of us would have gone back to slavery already. Let the US do it’s job. The world is not perfect but in some countries it’s terribly skewed towards pure ghastly man made evil.

Amen Life and Death Amen. You right on Que. Majority people, Domininca etc, if they have to run somewhere, it is Barbados they fly to receive a visa to head for the promise land. hey have their fats like everyone else, but they are the worlds leading democracy and the one which offers more aid for development. The issue is not USA and its wealth, the issue is our corrupt countries deep in Bobol and corruption, for example right here at home, clown Skerrit and Dominica and his blind cronies. Look where Haiti is now and why? Well, it was not because of USA, but failed corrupt incompetent cronies like Baby Papa Doc who fleeced the Little resources Haiti had, ran to France and holiday in USA, the same USA we talk about. I rather visit and reside in USA more than Venezuela, which will not be in vocabulary unless this immature bus driver Madura gets the hell out. Venezuela went about like this big brother and dished out cash Cuba Dominica etc, and failed to clean up their own backyard. Sad

Where is the US abusing human rights of its people everyday? The US is probably the only place where a gay person can make up some ridiculous story about being victim to a hate crime and then have the entire country believing him in spite of all the evidence pointing to it being a hoax. In other countries gay people get killed with no remorse.

Or you talking about the fake black civil rights movement that was started on lies and ended as soon as Trump got elected?

I dare you to give me a single instance in the US where protesters have been killed by armed forces for protesting against their government. Just ONE. I can give you several videos of that exact situation happening in Venezuela.

Or give me a single time where an american president has claimed that if he loses his supporters should go to armed combat. Just ONE.
