COMMENTARY: Mr. Minister of Education, what are your concerns about homosexuality?

At the end of the last academic year, Dominica News Online (DNO) reported that the Minister of Education, Petter Saint-Jean,  in an address, stated that he was going to carry out an investigation  with the intention of curbing the spread of homosexuality in the Dominica schools. We were pleased when CHAP Dominica Chapter responded to his statement appropriately, and asked for his reason for having this as a primary concern, to which, to our knowledge, there has been no response.

At the beginning of this academic school year we heard the minister of Education, in the media stating that he is going to carry out further investigations into  deviant behaviour and anti social behaviour in particular homosexuality in the schools in Dominica. Minority Rights Dominica (MiRiDom) repeats CHAP’s question to the Minister of Education, what is the reason for having homosexuality among minors as a primary concern?

Task Force:  When the Minister of Education states that he is going to put together a task force to investigate ‘anti social behaviour and in particular homosexuality’, this is where we have a problem.  Is the Minister picking on a minority and vulnerable population because he considers them to be ‘low picking Fruit’ – there fences are low? What he is in fact doing is psychologically bullying the students who may have homosexual tendencies and by extension encouraging others to physically bully them, by making the majority of the society who are not homosexual think that they could act out on homosexuals.  Please note Mr. minister that all Lesbian, Gay, Bi Sexual people are somebody’s children and they have brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles and friends that are prepared to protect their own, and that whatever you do to the least of your brothers, that you do unto the others and yourself.  In short the Minister is setting the stage for deviant behaviour.  Justice Mr. Minister, Justice. You cannot have peace if you are not just.

Sexual Activity at an Earlier Age:  Surveys done here in Dominica and overseas have shown that humans are getting involved in sexual activity at an earlier age than the generations before. It should be the concern of the school administrators to deal with the stated situation, and to build and improve on the knowledge that is imparted in their Family Life/Sex education programs. Just as was done before, when they had to deal with the concern of teenage pregnancy and even with the prevention of STDs such as HIV, where a realistic view of the situation had to be embraced.

Public Opinion:  It was interesting that the DNO report on the minister’s recent statements received at least 90% condemnation, and the others who were trying to support it had little modern day reasoning on the matter.

Equal to Others in the Society:  Homosexuals, Lesbians and bi sexual people exist in every society, and that is a reality that we have to deal with – You have meet it there and you will leave it there. The Minister of Education should be forward thinking as to how to deal with the reality of homosexuality, and to make homosexuals feel like they are equal to others in the society, no less and no more. The Minister of Education is to ensure that at this point of our development that the students are awarded a learning environment where they feel safe, secure and comfortable not only to learn but to be encouraged to be creative. The students are to be granted the full extent of their Human Rights for the realization of the full extent of their potential at that stage of their lives. What is important is to encourage them to learn & achieve regardless of their sexual orientation, carrying out a ‘witch hunt’ on these young people is of no benefit to our educational progress.

Encouraging Achievement inspite of sexuality regardless of sexual orientation:  In our education system we aspire to create a product that could understand the teachings of Plato & Socrates, appreciate the works Michel Angelo, read the works of Rex Nettleford. They all made invaluable contributions to human development in the areas where they lived and beyond; they all became famous; they are all respected and it is said that they were all homosexuals. Even here in Dominica we have men of high repute and standing who make a valuable contricution in the society and  they are gay.

    Nobody said homosexuals never accomplish something great, make a significant contribution, or become famous.

    However, there have been bank robbers, murderers, rapists, arsonists, kidnappers, and blackmailers who have become artists, writers, inventors, military and political leaders. The fact that somebody has succeeded in their field and accomplished something great does not prove they have no strange and perverted twist in some area of their life. It seems incredible that somebody would think in such an irrational way when the evidence proves them wrong.
    But these people have no interest in even being objective. They are too lazy to make inquiry. So they simply sit down at their keyboard and start typing.

    Common sense should tell us that an individuals ability to succeed in some field of endeavour does not necessarily justify all else they do in life and every thing about them.

    If you knew the percentage of serial killers who have been homosexuals you would be shocked. I do know. But If I told you I expect you would not believe me. So I will let you do the research.

    Some of the most horrific and gruesome murders and cases of cannibalism in North American history have involved homosexuals. Again, you do the research.

    The numbers for these are disproportionate to the percentage of the population that is homosexual. But this is where intellectual honesty comes in with the ability to objectively research such a delicate subject.

    People must shed this false belief that homosexuality hurts nobody. I continually read and hear that it is nobody’s business what two same sex people do in the bedroom as long as they hurt nobody else. 8-O

    Male homosexuals in Dominica have the highest rate of HIV/AIDS of any group of people in the country. It is the same in some other countries.

    Married men with children announce that they are “gay” and leave their families to live with men. I personally know of several such cases and have heard of others.

    I have known of two successful career ministers with children whose wives left them and the children to live with women.

    I had a friend who was married with two sons. He was a health care professional who worked in a hospital. He left his family and began dating men. I lost contact with him for years. Then I met him on a street in Toronto. He told me he was living with a male bank manager in Toronto’s gay village. My friend (yes, frend!) had left the Christian world behind and had no contact with people who would persecute him for his lifestyle. Apart from his work he had little to do with “straight” people and was completely submerged in the gay culture. I am a minister of the gospel and was reaching out to Charlie. When he invited me to his apartment to talk I didn’t hesitate to go. You can see I am not “homophobic”. I do not “hate” homosexuals. He told me he had absolutely no moral problems with homosexuality.

    Several decades past. My ministry had taken me to a different part of the country. Then one day I received the news through a mutual friend that Charlie had contacted AIDS and committed suicide. He didn’t take his life because he was mistreated by “homophobic” people. He took his life because he was overwhelmed by problems that are very much part of the homosexual liestyle. :cry:

    Please don’t say that homosexuality harms no one. My friend’s homosexuality cost him his life! It robbed his wife of her husband. It robbed his two sons of their father. It devastated his mother. It took a caring and successful health care professional out of the community. This is not an isolated case. It happens again and again. Multiply it a thousand times and then some. It is part of the life and culture that is called “gay”

    Am I reading this right? Is a homosexual lobby group actually challenging the Minister of Education’s concern about the spread of homosexual activity among students when such activity is illegal in his nation?

    The greatest argument against the deciminalization of homosexuality is the fact once homosexuality is decriminalized they will push for the legalization of same sex marriages and adoption rights. Then other special interest groups will argue on the basis of equality that their particular relationships should be given marital status. What about polygamy, adult-minor marriages, parent-adult child marriages, and brother sister marriages?

    The Minister of Education has every right to be concerned. Since same sex marriages have been approved in Canada we are seeing an incedible attack from hell in our schools. In Ontario elementary schools are being FORCED (yes, forced) to have an organization in each school that provides mandatory classes and lessons to teach that homosexuality is a normal, healthy, alternative lifestyle. This is complete with PICTURES and ILLUSTRATIONS of how gay couples have sex. Private schools and Christian schools are being FORCED to accept this program.

    I personally know of the following because I have spoken to the parents and the children. A nine year old boy came home from school and reported to his parents, “Today I learned all about being gay. The teacher taught us how to COME OUT.” A fourteen year old girl told her parents “Today I learned about sex between gays. They told (showed) us how two homosexual men DO IT and how lesbians DO IT.”

    We are also hearing from those who want pedophilia declared an “orientation” so it is protected by the same laws that now protect homosexuals. They are using the “equality” argument! And why not? Many pedophiles are saying it is the only orientation they have ever had. Psychiatr Does this sound familar? And guess what? Homosexual pedophiles are the hardest to cure and the most likely to re-offend. It should not surprise anybody that it is HOMOSEXUAL organizations that are lobbying to have the age of consent lowered or eliminated.

    Canada did not put the brakes on soon enough! First came decriminalization! Then legalization! Once the militant gay movement have the law on their side there will be no stopping them and they WILL target the schools.

    Please find out where your elected officials stand on the issues of decriminalization and legalization. Make it an issue. Get a commitment from them before election time. Vote for the candidates who stand for righteousness.

    I’m a Canadian. Why do I even care? Because we lost the battle in Canada (for the present) because we didn’t rally our forces soon enough. I see what is happening in Canada. I don’t want it to happen in Dominica or anywhere else in the Caribbean.

      Knowledgeable people appreciate the Minister of Education being concerned about the spread of homosexuality among students.

      Those who are not concerned are those who do not know the facts or have no interest in them.

      The Bible forbids homosexuality in Romans 1:26,27, 1 Corinthians 6:9,10, 1 Timothy 1:9,10, and Jude vs.7. Because of this the Christian Church has taught that it is a sin for nearly 2,000 years. Nations with a Christian heritage have had laws against homosexuality for hundreds of years.

      However it is not for religious reasons only educated and caring people oppose homosexuality. It is an unhealthy lifestyle and this is why we want spare our young people.

      Homosexuals are more often depressed. They have a higher rate of alcoholism. Not having a flesh and blood family of their own they experience more loneliness in their senior years. They have a higher suicide rate. Studies show they tend to have a shorter life span.

        Homosexuals are more prone to violence. They are more frequently involved in crimes so gruesome the media will not publish the details or they do not reveal that the criminals were homosexuals for the sake of political correctness.

        The six worse serial killers in the USA were homosexuals. Two of them were cannibals and ate parts of their victims. A random sampling of 59 American serial killers after 1960 was collected and studied. Of these convicted murderers 39 were gay, 66%. These are not isolated stats but are consistent with other studies I have seen.

        The minority of the population that is homosexual is between 1% and 5% but it accounts for about a third of child molesters and accounts for between a third to two thirds of child rapes, and may be involved in up to half of all murders.

        These figures have been taken from studies published on the internet.

    Dominica is a country where many married men step out boldly with their mistresses. Nobody condemns it. Nobody cuts them off their social circle. Men get women pregnant and do not marry them. It has become normal in Dominica. I am a woman who loves men. I could never be with another woman. But I am a sinner. So I refuse to judge others.

Men trying to talk and walk like women? Men playing in pooh pooh? Aids will never stop spread with this sodomy life. All hell break loose. I wonder why so many people were against the gay ship the other day, and now they seem to love the session and way of life eh….nasty set of people. If this is the case, I no longer want a Dominican passport. Sorry I was born there.

    Why is it so hard to accept homosexuality is a sin? they were born so – well to my recollection I have never heard of any baby born with dicky bird inside another man pit toilet, muchless for a big man being born. i am sure it would have made the news. I am not homosexual. I am a woman born with very strong attraction to men. Does that make it right if I go sleeping round? Nobody is condemning people attracted to other people whether it is man or woman. All of us who fornicate know that it is wrong because the bible said so. We also know that homosexuality is wrong because the bible said so. So why is it that people are trying to promote it as good and natural. It is not. If I fornicate I would go to God with my head hanging in shame, confess my sins and try to live a pure and good life, and help society to overcome this sin. In the same way, homos having intimate relations should hang their head in shame, go confess and try to not let their urges take hold just as I have to not let my urges take hold. And I have never gone to work to advertise or make public that I am heterosexual. I wish homos would keep their orientation to themselves. It is not my business. Wonders happen when you are overwhelmed with the holy spirit. GOD FIRST!

        You say “progessive/liberal Christians” understand that they cannot accept the Bible as a “description of reality”?

        I am an ordained minister in the largest and fastest growing evangelical denomination in Canada. We believe the Bible is the verbally inspired Word of God.

        Several of the largest Protestant denominations in my country have moved away from the Bible. They no longer preach the gospel. They ordain homosexuals. Anybody can be a member.

        But these denominations are losing members every year. In spite of their liberal stance their congregations are losing the young generation and falling apart. I know of case after case where what was left of two or three congregations have joined together for survival and sold off the other building or buildings. They chose a new name for themselves and started over with their empty form of religion that is attracting nobody.

        But who is buying their old churches, these large stately houses of worship that were built during the better days of the Methodist revival? It is the Bible believing, gospel preaching, hand clapping, shouting, Bible thumping Christians who have outgrown their previous meeting places.

        Our inner city churches are growing. Many of them are holding two Sunday morning services to accomodate the people while they are building large meeting places. Our colleges and seminaries are are accredited degree granting institutions. Our kids leave the church for college or university and come back with degrees, often doctorates.

        Jesus claimed to be the Son of God. He taught that the scriptures of His day – the Old Testament – was the infallible Word of God. He also said He was the Savior of the world and the only way to heaven. This man prophesied His own death and told how He would die. He said He would rise again on the third day. Whe He stepped out of the tomb on Easter morning He validated ALL His claims!

    I am so damn appalled at the ignorance of so called intelligent men and women in Dominica. I’ve got a question for this minister of education as to how he is going to curb homosexuality. Homosexuality is not a lifestyle anyone forces themselves into. Its a way of life.Its a natural thing. Persons are born gay and not something you wake up one day and decide to become.Wake up sir and smell the roses. Homosexuality is real and there is nothing you or anyone else can do to stop people from leaving their life. There are other things that needs to be addressed on an educational level rather than infusing yourself in peoples lifestyle. There are so many young people graduating high school with no sense of direction, have no idea how to face the real world , are not equipped to face the challenges that the real world offers. Lets address the fact that young people are also graduating high school yet are illiterate or even worse.Mr. Minister your focus should be directed at helping our young people prepare for a bright future by giving them the proper education they deserve and helping them prepare for real world challenges .Creating jobs for graduates… Securing scholarships for deserving graduates who desire to further their education. stop meddling in peoples personal lives and start focusing on important things.

      Those who do not support the Minister of Education’s concern about homosexuality in Dominica have not seen the larger picture of homosexuality, and have no understanding of the harm it does to its victims and to society at large.

      Those who are the most vocal in their defence of homosexuality are either homosexuals themselves OR
      have family members who are.

      Homosexuals often suffer bad health brought on by their same sex relationships and also have more mental health issues than straight people. They suffer more from depression, and have a higher rate of alcoholism. With no flesh and blood family of their own they experience more loneliness in their senior years, have a higher suicide rate, and a shorter life span.

      This is a legitimate concern for a Minister of Education or a Minister of Health. It should be the concern of
      every pastor, school teacher, and health care professional in the country. It is a concern to me as an international evangelist.

    I appreciate the minister’s concern. The school children should behave as school childen. They need to concentrate on their school work. They should not be making out in the toilets. They should not be bullying their teachers. They should not steal. They should not be peddling drugs in or out of schools. They should not be having sexs for top up. The deviant behaviours are broad. But it get worse, when they are having sexs in the classrooms and toiets.
    I think MiRiDom should discuss their issues with Ambassador A as he is knowledgable.

    There is nothing wrong with the minister trying to correct wrong among school children. They need to concentrate on their school work. Thay should not be making out in the toilet. They should not be bullying the teachers. They should not be stealing. They should not be accepting top up for sexs. They should not be peddling drungs in or out of school. All those are some of the deviant behaviours.

    I agree with MiriDom, that focusing on one group could very well give another cause or reason to personally and violently attach (bully) others.

    Instead the Ministry of Education (and Health and Gender Affairs) should be focusing on addressing the issue of high sexually activities in schools. This is an issue everywhere, not just Dominica!!! Sex in school so high, it have it own name, SALT.

    And people, it is not just the Ministries that have work to do, we parents have to play our part!!! Is our children that out there having sex!!! We get what we raise!! We can’t expect Government to alway pass and fix our kids when we don’t raise them right!!!

    I not trying to bash no one, but it is what it is. If we give our kids the love, attention and respect that they need to grow and become independent human beings, listen to them, allow them the opportunity to speak and verbally express themselves to us (their parents), if we talk to our kids, instead of just hitting them, they really and truly will not have the need to “go and see what others doing”. They will know that their time for sex will come and there is no need to rush into it.

    Everyone who reads this and have kids. ask yourself “Am I raising my kid(s) right? Am I Talking to my kid(s)? Are my kids talking to me? How often do I show interest in what my kids like or want to do? How often do I sit with my kid to do homework or play a game or just watch TV? How often do I tell my kids “I love you”? And how often do my kids tell me “I love you mommy/daddy!”

    I’m sure as hell trying, I’m reading all I can find on raising kids and doing the above questions. If it is one thing I am going to do well on this earth– it is raise my kids well!!!

    Committing homosexual acts isn’t just a sin, but it is an abomination onto God. We see where other wrongs done in the bible are described as sins and have punishments or famine, drought, skin diseases, ect., but homosexuality is always described as an abomination with a punishment of death.
    The new testament teaches forgiveness so we don’t go around killing homosexuals, but that doesn’t mean we should encourage homosexuality in our communities. Educating the youth about God and homosexuality is a good thing and it may be the minister’s task from God to do so; hence, he’s created his task force.

    Romans – With his usual intolerance, Paul condemns homosexuals (including lesbians). This is the only clear reference to lesbians in the Bible. 1:26-28

    Deuteronomy – “The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman’s garment: for all that do so are abomination unto the LORD thy God.” 22:5

    Leviticus – Homosexual acts are an abomination to God. 18:22

    If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them. — Lev.20:13

    There are many more examples with all describing homosexuality as an abomination onto oneself and God.

    Society has gone insane! In the eyes of many, homosexuality is considered normal but this is just anti the creator’s order. How could we rise to conscious living according to the ways that our forefathers lived before they were invaded by Europeans, if we continue to accept such deviant behaviours as natural? Man and woman were created to have offspring. There is no way that two men or two women can have children. That is just against the order of the creator.
    There is order in the earth and the universe but man has tampered with and altered many things and have come against the laws of the creator. We must realise, as an African people, that this way of life was not practiced in Africa before the Europeans invade the continent. That kind of lifestyle was practiced in Greece and Rome and we have adopted it, just like we have adopted many other lifestyles of the Europeans.
    We need to get back to our roots and find out who we were as a people and apply these practices again. We never practiced incest, pedophilia, homosexuality and so on. We were never a savage and uncivilised people either, as the so-called history books made us to believe. Civilisation actually began in Africa and was copied by the Europeans. We were the first in everything and everything came from our great minds. We are truly a brilliant people but we need to know that. We cannot accept what the Europeans have told us about us. We need to know about our history through our own African historians.
    We have truly lost our sanity and have been practicing every known lifestyle under the sun. We have called right wrong, and wrong right. We have strayed as a people and need to be awakened. And guess what. Religion will not and cannot deliver us as a people because this is what has us in the mess that we are. Europeans have used religion to control our minds so that we would never know who we truly are as a people. I like quoting my brother, Bob Marley. “Emancipate yourself from mental slavery, none but ourselves can free our minds.”
    We are confused, divided and can’t get along. That’s exactly what religion has done to us. We need truth to deliver us and that truth is knowing who we are as a race of beople. Every other race knows who they are and where they originate. We, as Africans, don’t even know who we are. We don’t want to be known as Africans because we are ashamed due to all the negative connotations that have been planted in our minds.
    When we find out who we are and what we have contributed to the world, we would never practice the lifestyle of the European.
    Many will not accept the truth because with truth comes change. We do not like to leave our comfort zones and religion is part of that.

    It always amazes me how obsessed Dominican’s are with homosexuality yet tolerant of more debasing activities in the community. I would think taxes would be better spent educating youngsters against the current culture of drugs, guns, robbery, murder, laziness and ignorance. Educate and curb those who visibly chip away at the base of society through rape, underage sex, fathering of children outside marriage and abandonment. These are the things that are visibly damaging to society than what two people of the same sex may do in the privacy of their own home.

    Is it homosexuals that engage in the robbing, beating and murdering of tourists or people and businesses that are trying to raise prospects and standards on the Island? How about a Task Force to deal with these issues instead of freeing or bailing the perpetrators of these crimes. A task force that curbs youngsters from watching all those trashy American programs and culture that gets pumped through cable tv would go a long way with dealing with any problem with youth than trying to stigmatize or victimize a vulnerable minority.

    It’s a known fact that those who are obsessed by homosexuality are probably closet or latent homosexuals so it always makes me wonder whenever I see such articles and comments.

    I applaud the person/people who wrote this article. I am by no means a gay rights advocate, but who I am, is someone who understands and accepts people for who they are. In reality, I don’t understand the whole concept of homosexuality, but this is beyond the point. Homosexuals are people just like the rest of us (heterosexuals); they have jobs, families, they laugh, cry and experience all the other emotions that we do. I don’t understand why some people are concerned and get so worked up with what other people do in their personal lives. If two adults of the same sex are intimate with each other in the privacy of their home, does it have any adverse impact on the greater society? I don’t think it does. Besides religious perspectives (which is irrelevant), there are no logical reasons against homosexuality. I am saying that religion is irrelevant here because; there are many things that are condemned by scared texts, but yet still, they are not admonished in present day society. Examples of these include (Leviticus), do not wear clothes made from two different fabrics, and do not plant your field with two different grains. I think we’d all agree that it would be highly unpractical to abide with these laws. Scared texts also condemn lying and stealing, which are indeed wrong, yet still people never get so worked up about liars and thieves. You may be convinced that homosexuality is wrong, but at least respect the rights of others to express their freedom of choice. I think deviant behavior is beyond the scope of homosexuality. I agree, that school aged children should be encouraged to refrain from any type of sexual act, drug use and violence, since after all these can be detrimental to their futures. Encouraging homosexuals to suppress their feelings can lead to no good. In the past this has manifested in different forms, suicide and divorce are just to examples. There are many stories of homosexual teenagers who commit suicide because of bullying . Then there are divorces which result when one partner, who was gay, all along, attempted marriage as a way to fit in. Homosexuals are part of life, and most likely (at least outside of D/ca), we have to interact with them, at work, at social gathering etc. Just because you don’t agree with or understand something, doesn’t give you a right to discriminate or threaten others who engage in it. Can we just be nice and accept each other, it is the right thing to do. :lol:

    I don’t support bullying or violence towards anyone no matter there sexual orientation,but acts of homosexuality is a crime in Dominica and therefore must be viewed as anti-social behaviour.It is morally wrong and most importantly an abomination in the sight of God.

        Years ago I met “Doc” Carter, a retired Ph.D. scientist (Physics and chemistry) who had spent a lifetime in atomic research. When I met him he was a member of Willowdale Pentecostal Church in Toronto and taught a Sunday School class of teenage boys in that church. Dr. Carter said there was not sufficient evidence to support evolution. He was appalled that is was being taught in the schools.

        These men are creationists. I have found Dr. Schroders works especially compelling.

    Nice Opinion piece..very thoughtful and insightful. It has a lot of positive bits in it. Including having a task force to engage in underage sex; sexual orientation should not matter in education. I would start by saying this. Being a homosexual in Dominica is not a crime, never have never will be. If anyone has been arrested for being a homosexual in Dominica or know of anyone please stand up? But having sex with the same sex is… Buggery Law..I think, but I am not sure what the law is.

    So do you think the minister is bringing in a task force that will bully individuals in the country for being a homosexual, or is he trying to curb the amount of buggery in schools? Just asking.
    When I read the piece from St. Jean, I personally thought that a lot of buggery was going on in the schools. Not that more homosexuals were going to school.

    You mentioned 90% condemned his comment on DNO, what about the rest that don’t come on DNO, and have an opinion.So DNO public is flawed as it is open to all, that have access to the internet, but not necessary the Dominican Public.
