COMMENTARY: Speaking in Tongues – Enlighten Your Members!

CommentaryIn conversation with persons from time to time, they ask about “Speaking in tongues.” In essence they ask:  Is the speaking in tongues done today really from God, as was the case with the Early Christians? Acts chapter 2 records this subject.

When Holy Spirit filled the apostles and disciples on the day of Pentecost, they were given the miraculous gift of “speaking in tongues,” that is, being able to speak other languages as Acts 2: 4, 6 show. A listener was able to hear his own language and thus understand the message of God. Acts 2: 6 – 11. Yes, speaking in tongues served to edify or educate others, especially unbelievers. 1 Corinthians 14: 22, 26. It was not done for show.

People, including church members, rightly question speaking in tongues today. Why? Unlike the listeners mentioned in Acts 2, people today do not understand what is said by those who claim to speak in tongues. The Early Christians speaking in tongues served a useful purpose as persons speaking different languages understood the good news in their respective languages and could accept the good news. What sense does it make to speak a foreign language to an audience that speaks English as is done today? Do they even speak a foreign language? Who understands?  1

Corinthians 13: 8 indicate to us that speaking in tongues was to be done away with, cease, after the apostles’ death. Statistics reveal that the gospel of God’s Kingdom is being preached globally in hundreds of languages today, by word of mouth, printed materials etc, and is supported by God’s Holy Spirit. Matthew 24: 14; Acts 1: 8. But it is not done through miraculous speaking in tongues today. Can religious leaders please enlighten their members on this topic?

For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries. someone interpret that for me.

  2. When one say “church members, rightly question speaking in tongues today,” is nonsense. I believe the people who question speaking in tongues, do so because they have the wrong concept, and understanding of what is speaking in tongues.

In the first place speaking in tongues has nothing to do with someone in a congregation who babbles some nonsense that not even themselves can understand! Wherever, whenever, the Bible speak of speaking in Tongues it simple means in an known language unknown to the member of the church speaking the language.

I do not speak Russian; nevertheless, If I visited Russia and all of a sudden I found myself able to speak Russian and the people understand me, that would be a gift from God. There could be thousands of people in one place, and someone speak a language where only one person understands while the speaker himself/herself understands not, that would be God speaking through someone for the edification of that one person.

Adding, why people who “speak in tongues” hide? I have never seen one speaking in tongues openly on the street, but I have seen preachers.
If you pay a visit to a church that claims to have members’ speaking in tongues, why do they refrain from doing it when you are there? Is it because the Holy Spirit that resides in YOU scares the other spirits away, and they become afraid? Probably, and this is the first CLUE that they are fake. That is why you are first INVITED to willing accept such spirits. DON’T DO IT! It is FAKE and DANGEROUS. I repeat: DEPART from such people for your own good!
NEVER trust an unknown spirit to do your worshiping, praying, or service to God.
God wants to hear YOUR sincere words and YOUR humble heart speaking to Him.

If a person speaks in an incomprehensible tongue, DEPART from that person, IT IS NOT A JOKE. If a person claiming to speak in tongues (that you don’t understand it) asks you to allow them to lay their hands on you: RUN as fast as you can and pray for protection from such spirits. Once you allow them to enter your mind, there is an infinitesimal chance of ever escaping.
God has pleasure in revealing His plans to His people! The Voice of God is understandable, loving, kind, soft, but dominant… not an obscured form of balder-dashing and temperamental whooshing of nonsense.
Most people who claim to speak in tongues are EMOTIONALLY IMBALANCED. Studies have proven that the spirits take over them because of a frequent state of impaired hormonal and nervous system function – popularly named MENTAL illness.

Speaking in tongues should never be taken lightly, ignored, or laughed about. Many affirm these days that they can “speak in tongues.” Does this “gift” come from God or Satan? 1 John 4:1 says: “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world.” Notice that is states MANY.
The purpose of the gift of tongues is to spread the Gospel and NOTHING else (no higher closeness to God, no deep worshiping, no special praying). This implies that is should be comprehensible to someone of those listening to the person speaking in tongues.
Now, a major question arises: If nobody understands the person speaking in tongues, how can you trust that the spirit possessing that person is not INSULTING God or His Holy Place? How can you trust an unknown SPIRIT to bring you close to God, when in fact that Spirit may be CURSING you and all that is yours? You don’t really know, and worse is that you will never know.

This article is incorrect and misleading in several respects.

Speaking in tongues in New Testament times was not for the purpose of preaching the gospel.

In Acts 2 the 120 disciples began speaking in tongues when they were filled with the Holy Spirit in vs. 4. This was ”…when the day of Pentecost was fully come, …” vs. 1 which was at 6 A.M. because that is when the Jewish day began. At that time no outsiders were present. It was not until ”…the third hour of the day…” in vs. 15 that the ”multitude came together,…” vs. 6, which would be 9 A.M. Those who spoke in tongues were praising God. The multitude (being Jews) recognized what was being said as ”…the wonderful works of God” in vs. 11, no doubt from Old Testament history but it was not ”gospel”. Then Peter preached to them. He did not preach in ”tongues”. He would have used Hebrew or Aramaic which was understood by the Jewish multitude, as well as the language of their adopted…

Then Peter preached to them. He did not preach in ”tongues”. He would have used Hebrew or Aramaic which was understood by the Jewish multitude, as well as the language of their adopted homeland.

When Spirit filled believers in the New Testament spoke in tongues in most cases nobody present understood what was being said. The case in Acts 2 is the one exception to this. Obviously this was for a
purpose. In chapters 10 and 19 the Bible does not indicate that anybody understood. So what was the
purpose of tongues in these cases :?: In Acts 10 and Acts 19 the tongues were the evidence that the believers had received the Holy Spirit in Pentecostal fullness! Read carefully Acts 10:44-46. So it is today.

We know of exceptional cases where the language spoken was understood by somebody near. But this is rare and when it happens it is for a reason.

        Continued…

Also in 1 Corinthians 13:10 ”that which is perfect” does not refer to the completion of the New Testament scriptures. We must interpret scripture in the light of scripture as ”…no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.” (2 Peter 1:20). In 1 Corinthians 13:10 ”…that which is perfect…” is the ”…body of Christ: …the perfect man, …the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ. ” (Ephesians 4:12) ”That which is perfect” is the completion of the church, the body of Christ, and points to that day when we shall see Him ”face to face” as in 1 Corinthians 13:12.

Even those who teach ”that which is perfect” in 1 Corinthians 13 is the completion of the New Testament scriptures love to sing

Face to face with Christ my Savior,
Face to face what shall it be,
When in rapture I behold Him,
Jesus Christ who died for me!

Yes! When ”that which is perfect has come” we will see Him ”fact…

Sometime ago my sister attended the Pentecostal Church in Goodwill. She was not a baptized member. She responded to an alter-call by the pastor. She keeled together with other church member at the alter. The pastor approached her and asked whether she was feeling the holy spirit and also asked that she speak in tongues. She responded that she was not feeling anything and did not know how to speak in tongues. He approached her several time and said to her just say something. She said she finally decided just to bah bah bah somethings out in the hopes of getting him off her back. When she did he began shouting praises. My sister felt really bad and disappointed after that experience. She felt the whole thing is kind of made up. She left the church because of that experience.

Your sister had a BARRIER made by the presence of the TRUE Holy Spirit in her mind which impeded the devil the enter her mind. Maybe her own sincere prayers or the prayers of the parents sat that barrier.
She is TRULY a blessed person, and she is highly favored by God. She is called to serve Him.

    • September 27, 2016

I am sorry your sister had an offensive experience in a Pentecostal Church and was frightened away.

Please encourage her to press forward and receive the blessing.

When we are seeking there are hurdles that can stand in our way. These include ignorance, fear, wrong teaching received in the past, a lack of a true hunger for the filling of the Spirit, and other things.

The devil does not want us to receive this experience so he will do anything to stop us.

A pastor wants to help us overcome whatever barrier is hindering. Unfortunately a pastor (and any Christians who are praying with him) may get in too big of a hurry instead of waiting for God to do the work and simply praying with words of encouragement. Now I am not saying this was the case with your sister. But we are all human including pastors. Mistakes are made in ministry.

Our faith must be based upon the Word of God. Please read Luke 11:9-13, Acts 1:8, Acts 2:4, Acts 2:16-17.

      Sincerely, Rev. Donald Hill.

and the ones who did not believe had more likes, but Jesus said in Matthew 7:6 Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces.
So why try to explain something that some people refuse to understand, Jesus gave the answer to people like that. I pray one day that some of the same negative comments will come in a relationship with the Father, then they will understand the significance of speaking in tongues.
God word is forever and ever it will not pass away. Jesus gave to the deciples the same He is giving for today, or there would be no healing, no repentence, no removing of demons being cast out it it was for this period of time God word will never change just to please people. Many times I have written a coment on DNO but it never get posted, I hope this one will.

First I must give these scriptures, only the Holy Spirit will allow someone to understand the Bible first of all. These scriptures are references to speaking in tongues. 1st Cor 14:2, Mark 16:17, 1st Cor 12:10, 1st Cor 12:28, and !st Cor 14:18,
Paul was not one of Jesus deciples on the day of Penticost, yet later on when he became a follower of Jesus he spoke in tongues, and he said none of you speak in tongues more than me.
Matthew 3-11 John said I baptized you with water but the one who comes after me will babtized you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.
Tongues is a language to God. Its God mysteries, God understands this language, unless you dont have an experience with the Holy spirit you won’t understand.

If you have a skill but do not practise it what will happen to it?

I speek a different laguage other then english. If I move to Dominica and never use my second language, I would in time lose it or forget it.
Paul was talking about the character of love and how love is more important than any gift or abillity. Your skill is only meaningful if you use it. Love however, it never becomes obsolete.

That is my whole point. God is supposed to hear , see and know everything so why people have to make a noisy spectacle of themselves when they are communicating with their God? That is why I also do not appreciate all the pomp and show and mysticism of the catholic church for example, when at the same time they preach to be humble and serve the poor first. Religion has become a show, or more a show-off and a tax free business.

So the writer of the article is absolutely correct, based on the scriptures he cited, as well as your references to Corinthians. 14:26-28. Speaking in tongues – different languages – were to benefit listeners, enlightening them spiritually. Hence Paul’s counsel that if there is no interpreter (to translate for those present who did not speak that particular language, which others in the audience did), then all should ‘keep quiet’.

Furthermore, if you have a message for me, you are not going to shout it out to me while you are surrounded by a crowd of people, are you? Logically, you would approach me privately. Likewise, if you have a personal expression to make to God, why not do what Jesus instructed at Matthew 6:5-7 – “..go into your private room and shut your door and pray to your Father who is in heaven…”?

Why is there a need to speak in exotic tongues in the presence of Almighty God? He knows out thoughts before we even think them. Why place the impediment of “tongues” between us and our private conversation with the Father? And if we chose to loudly give praises to Almighty God, wouldn’t we wish other listeners to understand what is being said so they can bear witness to our faith? Is the number of foreign “tongues” we speak directly proportionate to our degree of holiness? Or is it because we are just so vain and egotistic that we need to listen to ourselves proclaim (in a strange language, nonetheless) our proximity to God? I’ll pose those questions in humble silence to my God….no tongues required.

Many (not all) Pentecostal Fellowships and Denominations around the world are affiliated with this great organization. It includes 67 million Christians who believe in the filling of the Holy Spirit with the overflow of speaking in other tongues according to Acts 2:4 and Acts 2:16-18.

The Apostle Paul wrote “He that speaks in an unknown tongue edifies himself; …” (1 Corinthians 14:4) The word ”edifies” literally means ”builds up”. Since the Bible clearly shows, as pointed out in the article, that speaking in tongues-different languages-is for the benefit of listeners who only understand the tongue(language)spoken, and since God understands ALL languages, including English which you speak, why would he require you to speak to him in a foreign tongue as if he cannot understand your English? Jehovah God is the creator of the human brain and languages, hence no one needs to learn a foreign language to pray to God. Psalm 65:1,2. He understands prayers from ‘people of all flesh’.

Have you also considered all these people who speak in different languages, will they continue to speak in different languages?
At the end of time, all will be judged according to their actions, in words and deeds It is my feeling since those who are saved will be one in God and with others who are saved, they will not be speaking their own language. Our people have not yet woken up from the biggest brainwashing exercise ever committed. Christianity came with slavery where it was beaten into the Africans to accept their captors faith.
It has worked so well that long after the physical bondage has been abandoned, it continues to be firmly implanted in the mindset of a people to weak to think for themselves anymore. No other enslaved group has held on to the gods of those who conquered them like black people.

Black people have a stronger belief in white Jesus (aka Cesare Borgia) than they do in themselves. Please wake up to this fact. If you really think you understand the Bible then read of the Council of Nicea and know how it came about. Stop being like lost sheep.

      • September 27, 2016

My friend, what you have implied is not exactly true.

Christianity was not forced upon the black people and certainly not ”beaten” into them.

Black folks are intelligent people. They accepted Christianity because it made sense to them. They had never known such love as the love of the Father in heaven who ”..gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16) They saw Christ could deliver them from their superstitions, fears, and cruel practices. Christianity offered them a better life.

Did you know some of the largest Christian churches in the world are on the African continent :?: Most of these churches are under the leadership of dedicated black pastors. Did you know they are training black missionaries and sending them to other nations :?: When I pastored a church in Toronto we had black pastors from Nigeria preach for us. Speaking in tongues, like animal sacrifice, is a biblical anachronism. End of story.

    • September 26, 2016

There is far too much said about speaking in tongues in both The Acts of the Apostles and 1 Corinthians to think for one moment that it is a Biblical anachronism. What is said about this manifestation of the Holy Spirit – the historical records in The Acts and the explanations and instructions in 1 Corinthians – leave absolutely no reason to think this.

Moving beyond the First Century A.D. we have too many documented cases of tongues to allow for such an explanation. This includes actual cases where the languages spoken have been recognized and understood by people present. Make no mistake my friend. We are dealing with something very real.

      September 27, 2016

See also Acts 2:5-11. Humans on earth understood the tongues – various languages – spoken. They recognized that the disciples were speaking about ‘the magnificent things of God.’

      • September 29, 2016

        This is correct.

The multitude that had gathered were Jews of the diaspora who had come to Jerusalem to celebrate an annual feast. They were familiar with the Old Testament so they recognized what was being spoken as ”the wonderful works of God” from their history. But it was not the gospel
of salvation that was being spoken. Peter preached the gospel to them. He did not preach in one of the miraculous tongues. He probably spoke in Aramaic which the Jewish multitude understood.

There is no example in The Acts of a miraculous gift of tongues being used to preach. The other times in The Acts when believers spoke in tongues nobody understood what was being said. Read Acts 10:45,46 and 19:6-7. he purpose of the tongues was not to communicate the good news of salvation. On these occasions the tongues were the overflow of the filling. They served as a sign that the believers had received the filling of the Holy Spirit.

    • September 29, 2016

This is true in part. It can also be an earthly language.

You have given us scriptures which show there is a true and valid speaking in tongues. Not one of these scriptures suggest that it was only for the first century or that part of the world. Examine the context of Mark 16:15-20. Note: the words: ”all the world”, ”preach the gospel”, and especially all of verse 20!

Yet you received 12 thumbs down. These are people who don’t understand the scriptures or they have simply decided NOT to believe the word of God :!: They are also turning their back upon what God is doing in the world today as He prepare the church and brings it into the complete restoration of New Testament truth before Christ comes to receive His bride.

The truth of the Baptism in the Holy Spirit and spiritual gifts has been restored to the church. A high percentage of the Christians in the world today have embraced this understanding.

The Bible clearly states that there has to be an interpretation of the message being given in tongues or else it is to be seen as false.Even if the practice has declined in today’s world does not mean that it is dead, for God is not dead

    • September 26, 2016

Speaking in tongues when it is not followed by an interpretation is not necessarily “false”. It may simply be incomplete. If no other Spirit filled believer gives the interpretation the one who spoke in tongues is to pray that he may interpret. (1 Corinthians 14:13)

However, there are occasions when the speaking in an unknown tongue is NOT a message to the congregation and requires no interpretation. This is the case when God fills a believer with the Holy Spirit for the first time which is known as the Baptism in the Holy Spirit. On this occasion he (or she) receives the overflow of speaking in tongues. See Acts 10:44-47.

It also happens when the Holy Spirit in us is aware of a need or a problem we may know nothing about and is coming to our help by praying through us. Or it may be when we are battling Satan who is trying to hinder our prayer and the Holy Spirit comes to our help by praying through us. Read Romans 8:26,27 and 1 Corinthians 14:14.

There are many stories. In the ancient days a saintly man was praying. The devil appeared to him as a saint, St. Anthony of Padua and told him about not praying that, God will not hear his prayers, words to that effect. He realized it was the devil.
I related this to a few people and only last week during a course of conversation.
One evening, a few years ago, I went to church. It was winter with a lot of snow on the ground. It was a Tuesday evening.
This Holy Mass takes place every Tuesday evening at that parish, in honor of St. Theresa Lisieux, Little Flower of Carmel, followed by a Novena to her and Benediction.

As soon as the Mass commenced, the thought crossed my mind, “Fete in Dominica.” It was Carnival Tuesday night in Dominica. My mind was not on that at all nor prior to going to church. I was surprised it crossed my mind. In church!
I knew it was the devil or the Lord made me to believe, it was the devil. In my mind, I said, “Get away from me” and quickly said the Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel.” I was no more distracted.
A few people told me how shocked they were what came to their mind while in church.
The evil one never leaves us, even when we are sleeping. However, if we have God’s protection, he will not harm us.
Therefore, we do not know if speaking in tongues came from God or not, especially if the person is unable to interpret it. I wonder.
If they are able to interpret it and it is not contrary to Holy Scripture, then we can conclude it came from God. It should be a godly message, not one that chastises those who are present.

Those who are Catholics and who read relevant books will learn a lot about their faith and that of the saints and their experience. There is a lot of information and in books out there, sold in Catholic book stores. http://www.ewtn.com and other Catholic Websites sell them. Obviously, the books may not all be the same.
I recall reading in the book, Secret of the Rosary written by St.Louis de Montfort that, at the time of death, God will be there and so will be the devil. God on our right side and the enemy on our left. This enemy will taunt us for our faithlessness. All the prayers that we said which were not well said, he takes them and places them in his basket.

      • September 28, 2016

Where do you find this nonsense in the Bible :?:

God is in heaven. Satan roams the earth and walks up and down on it. There is not one single verse of scripture where a dying person even reported seeing God on his right hand and Satan on his left. There is certainly no scripture that supports the idea that God puts prayers that are not well said in a basket.

There are writers that write such things because they know Catholic people love to read them.
Without a knowledge of the Word of God they have no way of knowing it these fables are true. Just the fact that they were written by a Catholic satisfies them especially if the author is a religious.

When it comes to death what matters is you must be saved. This means you must have trusted Christ and received HIM as your personal Savior. You must be trusting – relying upon – and depending upon – His shed blood and death ALONE to save you. Read Romans 8:6-8 and Ephesians 2:8,9, John 3:16,17, and 36 :!:

        Sincerely, Rev…

St. Faustina said, at the time of death God calls out “three times” to souls. Some people see their sins as scarlet and they condemn themselves.
God is impartial; no preference to anyone. We will be judged by our deeds and receive our reward, one way or the other, as we deserve..
Even at the time of death God is merciful. This is why we must not judge nor condemn anyone.
We Catholics have prayers for A Happy Death. During our lifetime we must pray to God to help us to have a happy death. We should also inform others about it.
There is a prayer to St.Joseph, the Spouse of the Virgin Mary and Foster Father of Jesus, Litany for A Happy Death. We know death comes like a thief in the night..
We pray to St. Joseph because he died a really happy death during Our Lord’s lifetime and being his Foster Father. So much more could be stated about that.
As I said, there is much to share. I am not a Catholic for nothing. :)

Using the word, person and persons are words utilized in these times.
I did not learn that in elementary nor high school in Dominica.
One does not have to be an English major to know that.
I can understand, This “person” said this and that”; not “person” said this and that. Is the latter not ridiculous? These people said this and that is more appropriate than “persons.” The people; not the persons.
These words were not used even in big countries. It is recently, since this transgender issue, people changing from male to female and vice versa, they have devised those names, even though the words are in the dictionary.” They must be used appropriately.
Nowadays they throw everything on us and what is immoral and expect us to adopt them. Upsetting!
Some educators, those in authority as politicians, etc.,(not referring to D/ca) are not as intelligent as we thought. They mess up everything in the world. It may be that those are ungodly. For some, it is visible.

We could say, these, those, people, he, she, male and female where applicable.
You know these countries now have one gender washrooms. Those groups as also UN are pushing it. This is where this crap originates.
Even for students! Some of us are not pleased about that. It is upsetting to think of it; shocking too.
I visualize one day, some terrible attacks will occur in those washrooms. If ever, I hope it will open the eyes of those politicians and the school boards.
They are also changing all records to show one gender. They think they can eliminate the words he, she, male and female. These people are stupid. Wait when they stand before God for their judgment.

Yes, speaking in tongues served to edify or educate others, especially unbelievers. 1 Corinthians 14: 22, 26. It was not done for show–News article

Yes that is correct and apostle Paul stressed on the term “nonbelievers”, in that the “speaking in tongue” person is speaking the language of the one who is present but is yet to believe, as Holy Spirit Guides the speaker to do so.

For example a preacher who is guided by Holy Spirit to preach God’s Word to a churchwho understand English, then Holy Spirit would speak through that preacher in English.

But there is someone who do not understand English, and God knows that person desires to know what is being said. If the preacher has the gift of Tongues Speaking, Holy Spirit would speak the language of the one who did not understand English through the preacher for just a short while .

In so doing the English speaking people would be enlightened and the none English speaking person would be edified.

    • September 26, 2016

What sense does it make to speak a foreign language to an audience that speaks English as is done today? –News Article

It makes no sense at all, but the reason this is so is because most people who claim to be speaking in tongues has a false doctrine which tongue speaking is a sign that someone is born again. But I was born again in the first week of September 1998–that is 18 years ago–but I do not speak in tongue.

So “Tongue speaking” and being “Born again” are both by God’s Grace by faith but one is the Gift of Love, Life in the Spirit (being born again) and the other is the Gift of Edification or Enlightenment (Tongue Speaking)

By the Tongues speaking God united the people on the Day of Pentecost, for He had divided them at the Tower of Babel, causing them to speak different languages–His curse of confusion. So then the people heard their language being spoken by outsiders on the Day of Pentecost. Right then it was a sign for nonbelievers .

Corinthians 13: 8 indicate to us that speaking in tongues was to be done away with, cease, after the apostles’ death–News Article

This verse is not accurate for all the “apostles have died” including Paul himself, but genuine Tongue Speaking continues to this day.

At 1st Corinthians 12, 13, and 14 , Paul is speaking about the Gifts from Holy Spirit, such as: Preaching, Teaching, Prophecy, Evangelism, Healing, Serving etcetera. All of those gifts are still in action today through those whom Holy Spirit is doing those different works.

So Tongue speaking is not for everyone, neither is the other Spiritual Gifts –that is why Paul also teaches that Jesus is the Head and the Church is His body, with all its different parts to do the work of Salvation, which is the Gift of Life in Love

Today the Churches are being misguided by their Leaders, who were not called to do the work which they are doing–they are like wolves in sheep’s clothing.

      • September 26, 2016

At 1st. Corinthians 13, Paul is emphasizing on the Gift of Salvation, which is Life in the Spirit–the Great Light in Love. which we can only receive by our faith in God Almighty, through His Person, who is the Son in flesh and bones, the Man Himself–Christ Jesus.

So at verse 8, speaking about Love, he says: ” Love never fails. But whether there are prophecies, they will fail; whether there are tongues, they will cease; whether there is knowledge, it will vanish away.” Therefore Paul is not speaking about tongues alone, neither did he say “after the death of the apostles” for that cannot be!

That why he ended the chapter with the verse here: “And there abides, Faith, Hope, and Love; these three, but the Greatest of the Three is Love”

That is to say, there is a time coming, when all the other gifts of the Spirit will no longer be necessary, for Life in Love is complete in us, but Faith and Hope must continue with Love for infinite growth in Life

    • You always have to come here and write some nonsense?

Look at it this way, for years I went to the Roman Catholic Church when I was a kid, only to hear a priest conduct a service in all Latin. He spoke or read in tongue of Latin (language), which nobody in Wesley spoke, I believe Fred Henry, the father of the guy Henry who writes his column on DNO was the only one who spoke Latin in the village.

He did not attend Catholic church. So, did it make any sense for the priest even today reading from a Bible written in Latin? It does not! You need to recognized there is no mystery about speaking in tongues once you understand that speaking in tongues simple means having the ability to speak different languages.

Now if you are by yourself and found yourself speaking in a language that you do not understand, that is an indication your sprit is communicating with the Sprit of God!

No one can understanding the tongue language except God.. This is why the Holy Spirit enable the apostles to speak in different language so that everyone could understand in their own language because the city was a multi cultural city.. Even up to a point the people thought they were drunk and speaking nonsense.. Then Peter spoke up and told them what was happening.. The Holy Spirit empowered them to do this.. It was not of their own doing.. Speaking in tongue is one of the most visible sign of the baptism of the Holy Spirit cause any other way could easily be of our own self doing . So much more can be said but I’d urge anyone seeking the truth of speaking in tongues to ask of God to give them an experience of the Holy Spirit.. Then you or we will know what they experience in the upper room.. Any why Christian should seek after it today.. Pray in the spirit!!

Read my comment above and you will learn that speaking is tongue is not for everyone, it is given to certain persons through whom Holy Spirit will use it among a group or to certain individuals whom He plans to enlighten or edify.

The gift of Tongues is no different from the gift of Evangelism, Preaching, or Prophecy, because Holy Spirit has to be the One doing those works through the ones He has chosen to do them–if not through Him, those persons who are doing that said work was not called–but there are many like those in society.

Do not be fooled with the idea that speaking in tongues is one of the most visible sign of baptism of the Holy Spirit–everyone must have the Baptism of the Holy Spirit, as it belong with Salvation–so why is it that He would cause only a few to speak in tongues and not everyone.?

Are you saying that those who do not speak in tongue do not have the Baptism of the Holy Spirit?

Fantastic article. Proper study of the scriptures will reveal that the gift of tongues as seen in the Bible is no longer operational today. Persons especially Christians must be careful about entertaining cacophonous gibberish being masqueraded as the gift of tongues today.

Also, another one of these gifts mentioned in the Bible which is no longer functional today is the gift of prophecy. We have the completed Bible today as compared to the early Christians who did not have the entire scriptures and thus they needed to receive special revelation from God regarding himself, his work etc.

With the scriptures now complete, EVERYTHING God WANTS US TO KNOW about living the Christian life and himself can be found in the Bible.

There are NO modern-day TRUE PROPHETS of God neither can anybody be taught in any seminar to be a true prophet of God – maybe a false prophet but not a true prophet of God. These teachings find no sound doctrinal foundation in God’s holy word the Bible.

      Study of what Scripture?
Who said not? There is such a thing as godly inspiration. God continues to inspire people today. He has not stopped; not until the end times.
Do you recall what Our Lord told his disciples? “I have much to tell you but you will not be able to absorb it all. When I go, I will send My Advocate, Holy Spirit who will teach you in all things.” This is aside of what is in Holy Scripture; not contrary to it.
Ask yourself, what has the Holy Spirit told us since Our Lord ascended into Heaven?”
This is where you people are caught with your misunderstanding and misinterpretation of Holy Scripture. As it is said, let everyone (some people) hold their tongue. Their opinion and advice are not worth it. Much more could be stated about that.
Incidentally, right now on the US Catholic Radio, spiritual enlightenment and discernment are being discussed. Isn’t that something?

I grew up not believing in such so called speaking in tongue, nor does my Christian denomination accept such. Our point of view is basically everything you talked about in this article. It’s also said if someone have to speak in tongues there should be an interpreter so others could understand.. This I believed until I ask God to open my spiritual eyes to his word. I’ll try to be simple and quick in my explanation..
In the upper room when they begin to speak in tongues.. Yes they did speak in tongues and other languages, yes the Holy Spirit enable them to speak in other language so that others could understand.. Paul said in 1 cor 14: 1-6 he Desire that we speak in tongue . . in your article you mention speaking in tongues is to edify others and here’s this is not what Paul is saying .. he mention That speaking in tongues is to edify your self yourself and only God can understand this language. but if your going to edify others it’s best you prophecy. cause no one can…

    • September 26, 2016

1st. Corinthians 14: 5  “I wish you all spoke with tongues, but even more that you prophesied; for[a] he who prophesies is greater than he who speaks with tongues, unless indeed he interprets THAT THE CHURCH MAY RECEIVE EDIFICATION

@realist I use the upper case in the last line, so you could see how the writer came up with his or her.

Now Paul is saying that it is better to prophecy because the Church would understand, but also the church would be edified if the one who spoke in tongues, spoke the language of someone else in the church–he or she would be the interpreter–that is how the church is edified.

But as Channel 1 said above, we neither need prophets or tongues speakers, today, because Holy Spirit is in full Power through those who will allow their faith to work –that was the reason for the Day of Pentecost. That was why Jesus said to the 120 disciples: “Stay in Jerusalem until I send you the Promise of the Father” Luke 24: 49

So far I have not spoken in tongues; do not wish for it. Sometime you could also address “anointing and resting in the Spirit”; and enlighten your members.
I have attended a few Healing Masses. At one, a Bishop of India who visited his brother, a priest at that parish conducted it.
He also spoke about anointing and why some people rest in the spirit and others do not. Only God has the answer. It happens to a few people. I heard some receive good messages; others not. I am speculating, it all depends on our demeanor as Christians. It also depends how well and with what type of heart we attend Holy Mass and our attitude toward others, when we are not at Church. I will simply state, God knows, sees and hears all things.
At the end of Mass the Bishop placed the Blessed Sacrament (the Monstrance with the Blessed Host) on the Altar and commenced the anointing. Some parishioners also perform it. As we approached the Altar, we sang relevant hymns.

  31. Tell the Truth

I went to a couple who were performing the anointing. One asked me what would I like to pray for. I did not say for myself but for someone whom I knew was sick. Then I said everybody. :)
From the moment I was anointed with oil on a piece of cotton on my forehead, my body became weak. They did not touch me. They are not allowed to touch those who go up for anointing. If the parishioners show a sign of resting in the Spirit, then it can be said it is authentic.
A man standing by for that purpose, placed me gently down on the floor. I lied there for a minute, eyes closed, probably or more, not oblivious of my surroundings. As the saying, “I was out like a light.” :)
When I came to, I opened my eyes and touched the man’s leg who I noticed was standing near by. I extended my hand and he lifted me up.
He and a few others had a big job that night to place those who were resting in the Spirit carefully down and helping them to get up.

One must be careful to make an experience the absolute basis of truth. Our experiences must be validated by scripture. Certain experiences can be born out of psychological, physiological or even demonic phenomena rather than having anything to do with scripture.

You are wrong about your biblical reasoning. This is the problem with you people about Scripture. To begin with, if your Bible is not a Catholic one, “it is not the original one”. Calvin, Martin Luther, Henry VIII, King James Version and those other non-Catholic ones are not the true, original Bible. They have taken some chapters from it. Did you not know that? If you refuse to believe that, when you die you will see the truth.

Well, I was waiting to hear “And of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” I did not hear it.
It was then I realized that was Our Lord Jesus Christ. I can tell you that night I felt like the happiest person on earth which reflected on my face. As I was told. my face was alight, shining brightly/glowing with happiness. This was the happiest moment of my life ever. When I returned to my place of residence, I commenced singing the Hymn,

    All praise and all thanksgiving.

At certain prayer gatherings some do speak in tongues. It obviously is of no use to the others if they are unable to comprehend them while speaking in tongues.
This is what St. Paul meant. Why speak in a language that no one can comprehend? Of course, if the person is able to interpret it, then it is worthwhile.
The same as visionaries who receive messages. On condition these messages are not contrary to Holy Scripture, they are (could be) believable.
How about those who go into a trance while praying or when anointed with blest, holy oil at a Healing Mass/Service and are resting in the spirit? It used to be called “slain in the Spirit.” We are told to use the word “resting . . . .” Sounds better. :)
Some may not remember what was stated when they were resting in the Spirit. Therefore, they are not able to inform others about it. Others do. Generally, it is a personal message for the one who is in that trance.

You have a right to your opinion, if wrong or right. So do others.
Keep in mind, God enlightens. We must be able to discern what is right and wrong. The best thing to do is not to be confused for God is not a God of confusion. Pray to him for enlightenment.
As a Christian Catholic, if I feel I need advice, I will consult a Priest or Catholic Theologians. I listen to the Catholic Network. There are some priests, theologians who are well-learned.
If you are a Catholic, this is where you seek advice; not from non-Catholics. Some Catholics have renounced their faith from listening to them and provide adverse information of the Catholic Faith. One day they will find out their error.

I beg to differ! I immagine that the conversation would normally be with one person at a time, not in a group, that is the reason the writer used the term “persons” and not people

You and I agree on that. It is improper language to say “persons”. People is the plural form; not persons. They are avoiding the female and male gender. Persons and person does not differentiate.
Anyway, if you listen to some people talk, you will realize how much they do not know. They pick up everything that passes and think they are speaking proper language.
Anyone who tells me about “persons” or “person”, as long as I am able to correct them, I will.
I will never use the word person or persons in the manner in which those people use them today. They must know that the reason they are used it is because of this transgender, same sex relationship and so-called same sex marriage. Some of those who use “person” and “persons” do not know that.
In the same manner, they place heterosexual couples in the same bracket as same sex relationship. Therefore, they commenced using persons and person. I call them fools.
      Please enlighten them.

“People” is always plural,,used either to denote:

        – (a collective noun) referring to “human being ins general or considered as a whole
        – “peoples” , to describe distinct groups of members of a particular nation, community or ethnicity.

It has its roots in the French “peuple”
