COMMENTARY: Reflections on Dominica-Russia relations

Skerrit said Russia, the Caribbean and Latin America must work together

Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, spoke last week at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum in Russia and said he believed that the withdrawal of the United States from the Paris Climate Accord is a very important lesson for us in the Caribbean, Latin America “and of course Russia, that we need to now define our own process of integration and working together.”

The Prime Minister highlighted what he referred to as the Russian, Eurasia, Caribbean/ Latin American relationship as a means of overcoming those challenges and defining “a new path for ourselves.”

In light of that development, we decided to share with you once again, the following excerpt from Steinberg Henry’s book “Calypso Drift” 2014/Chapter 55, which was published in 2014. www.amazon.com, www.barnesandnoble.com.

    Diplomatic relations with Russia were established on 19 May 1995, under the Dominica Freedom party government of Ms. Eugenia Charles, just before the general electionof12 June of that year, which was won by the UWP.

    Off course we need to carve our own way. U.S admins since Reagan have done so, although cautiously, but we do share the same beef with them, as long as we honor restrictions and embargo set by the international community. Just as the winning made with China and Venezuela, Good move Skeritt.

      Correction: we do not share the same beef with them…

    Greetings Steinberg! I applaud your vision – not just now but since as a young student in the late 1970s/early 1980s listening to you on DBS radio discussing topical issues. Indeed, RUSSIA is one area that we have hardly explored – notwithstanding our already existing diplomatic relations with them. it is for this reason I wrote in the comments section of this DNO article: https://dominicanewsonline.com/news/homepage/news/general/pm-skerrit-to-address-st-petersburg-international-economic-forum-in-russia/.

    There is much to gain once we know what we want, what we hope and aspire to achieve and we know the conditions and parameters by which we can seek constructive engagement.
    My training was influenced in part by Russia (MSc Telecommunications & Broadcasting – Ukrainian State Academy of Telecommunication of Odessa). Interestingly, the former Secretary General of my present area of employment UN/ITU who was from Mali did the same degree in Russia so we always speak Russian

      As I have stated in previous comments, I think it is very prudent and timely to engage in more closer diplomatic and economic ties with Russia. the important thing is in knowing and defining our philosophy for constructive diplomatic engagement. We must also explore the tenets of the key pillars that could underpin economy and set a reasonable path for our sustainable growth and development. These key pillars must be:

      1. AIRPORT & Other Infrastructure;
      2. RESILIENCE, linked with Climate Change and AGRICULTURE (food security).
      3. Invariably, I would link FOOD SECURITY with Health & Wellness and Tourism;
      4. AGRO PROCESSING & LIGHT MANUFACTURING (especially including ICT & Electronic components). Russia & Ukraine are well known for Telecommunications and APP Development.
      5. Renewable Energy: wind & solar to buttress what is being done in Geothermal & Hydro.
      6. EDUCATION, SPORTS & CULTURE

      All these areas are ideal for exploring potential and the Russians have the know…

        there are opportunities and we must be prudent in understanding geopolitical shifts and the stakes with a level head that is not clouded by the TWO or THREE PARTY DAILY RO-RO that Dominicans have become experts in. We must chastise, admonish and reprove where necessary but also to embrace new and favorable ideas where necessary. the approach of the UBUNTU philosophy – BECAUSE YOU ARE, I AM. or “I AM WHAT I AM BECAUSE OF WHO WE ALL ARE.

        In other words “A person is a person through other people strikes an affirmation of one’s humanity through recognition of an “other” in his or her uniqueness and difference”. I love that it captures the concepts of extroverted communities, socialization of prosperity, redemption, deference to hierarchy and humanism. This approach and our CHRISTIAN background should guide us in our quest to development.

        My Brother Steinberg you are spot on in your vision but often our people do not or refuse to listen. I PRAY THAT THEY LISTEN THIS TIME

    There is nothing wrong with Dominica establishing close and diplomatic relations with Russia.As a soverign nation just as Dominica establishing establishing close diplomatic ties to China,it can do the same with Russia.However,it suggests that Skerritt wants to neglect the long relationship that we have enjoyed with the USA before Trump should be neglected or deminished.This is stupid and will not be in DOMINICA’S best interest.Donald Trump will be gone from the scene soon, therefore to use his craziness as justification for closer ties with Russia is ludicrous,as Russia has practiced it’s own brand of craziness.We need to continue to cultivate our very close ties with the USA and handle Russia wi5h kid gloves if we can.America is bigger than Trump
