COMMUNITY REPORT: Dumping alongside Roseau River

Photo taken during dredging activity in the Roseau river. Meanwhile, garbage is shown to have accumulated along the south side of the river bank

One can’t help but notice  the dredging that is taking place in the Roseau River and for this, we, as Dominicans, are thankful.  However, it is also very hard to miss the rubbish that is alongside the banks of the river.

This is ridiculous. Is rubbish being dumped alongside the river while it is being dredged?

We know and have seen the damage that the Roseau river can cause. Why aren’t we taking better care of our rivers?

Also, I would like to encourage persons who use the bus stops alongside the Roseau River, to stop dumping garbage in the river.

Let’s take care of our environment.

Hello and good afternoon my people. We can’t blame the government regardless of which party is in power rather we must hold the people who feel they can stay in their backyards and just thrown garbage into the river. Every time I visit and I go to the market to purchase vegetables or get a fresh coconut water I see trash floating down the river and some people using the river as their bathroom. Maybe we should pass out leaflets to educate them about their behavior which would benefit all of us.

That happening close to the pal rep for Roseau food place, but he do not care about Roseau and never did. Well send Melissa and clean it up she might get a few votes.

All I see is a gross display of negligence and inconsideration. Why not dispose the trash off someplace suitable for that? Just because YOU do not care about YOUR surroundings does not mean that your neighbors share YOUR sentiment.
That said, being surrounding by trash does not mean one has to look like the trash, does it? if you have no control, or, choice over the issue, there is nothing you can do but clean up yourself, smell nice and sweet, and live your life.

Those people do not represent Dominica and the rest of the Caribbean; they are careless, inconsiderate, people, which no respect for others. That’s all.

We need to face the facts and stop the excuses like you denigrate the country and there is trash in other countries, why not take the approach that we are going to make Dominica an example for the region an beyond. It would be the best solution.

If we claim to be a God fearing nation then we must walk the walk and not just talk the talk as “cleanliness is next to Godliness”!!!

    April 3, 2019

The sad truth is that here in Dominica we live in a selfish, inconsiderate, myopic society, where it seems all that matters is “I get my share, and to hell with everybody else”. We are such a small community, that it should be easy to always consider the other person, but, that is not how it is. Our people need to wake up and realize that none of us is here by ourselves, and the only way to move forward is with consideration and concern for our environment and one another.

If only Dominicans, and by extension all West Indians, took as much pride in their surroundings as they do in their car and dress, we would have an environment to be proud of.

AMEN TO THAT. They looking good and smelling sweet but when you see their homes and surroundings. you will be in shock.

Karl orndem, so if All Dominicans and West Indians are like that, then I suppose it goes without saying that you must be the same. Burnett does not class himself as Dominican or West Indian so he can wash his mouth on us with impunity.
You should remember that DNO is a worldwide forum, stop being a ‘doom and gloom merchant’ denigrating our country.
There is good and bad everywhere in the world.

Marcus and so called ‘freedom of expression’ did you
understand what I wrote. The fact is Burnett made a sweeping statement about Dominicans and West Indians not taking pride in their surroundings and environment. I pointed out to him that his statement was incorrect. He acknowledged that his view was a generalisation and NOT a
true reflection of All Dominicans etc etc. Do you really agree
that ALL Dominicans don’t care about their environment?

      • Karl Orndem
        April 5, 2019

God Helps Those who Helps Themselves there is a saying that goes – “if you knew better you would do better” Burnette himself is married to a Dominican and i believe his children might also be also. I am Dominican, but I KNOW BETTER. I am familiar with Mr. Burnette and i know his surroundings at Antrim as well. I get your trying point but i doesn’t stand up to much because you yourself should know better. You cannot tell me that you are happy with the way our country looks. Drive around, walk around ride around, and tell me that you are happy with how Dominicans have been treating the environment. And dont blame maria, Maria only pushed back out all the garbage we have been sweeping under the rug. all the rubbish on hillsides that was hidden by forests etc. We are individualistic inconsiderate people in 2019. Majority of us do not care for our neighbour. That is the truth. I see cement truck drivers empty whats left of their loads on roadsides, in rivers, etc. Rubbish everywhere…

      • Karl Orndem
        April 5, 2019

Tell me that you are happy with the way our country looks. And dont even try blaming Maria, because the place looked crappy long before Maria or Erica. We cannot even maintain a proper roadway. Bush always growing in the road.

Burnett, you are making such a sweeping statement saying that ALL Dominicans and ALL West Indians do not take pride in their surroundings and their environment! If that is the case why do you choose to live among us. You KNOW your statement is NOT true,
oherwise the situation regarding this eyesore in the middle of Roseau would not be highlighted. Slowly but surely you are showing your true self. No surprises there! However, I am baffled by all those who gave you the thumbs up for denigrating them.

      • April 3, 2019

You are quite correct, I should not have generalised.

However, in general I have found that West Indians do take more pride in their car and dress than they do in their surroundings. On the other-hand I give credit: their dress and personal cleanliness puts me to shame.

In contrast, my childhood was spent in the North of England where we only bathed once a week, with the entire family sharing the same bath water in a tin tub in front of the fire and the same shirt stayed on my back for a week.

        April 4, 2019

I don’t know why you took this comment so personally. The fact is that there is garbage dumped by the riverside which is unsightly and unhygienic! Pointing it out is not denigrating the country. Having garbage as an eyesore in your city is denigrating the country. You need to take constructive criticism for what it is. The situation was highlighted and hopefully the right people will act on it in a positive way. Allow people to express themselves without thinking everything is negative.

I agree with you sir. I will not stress how important it is that WE take care of our environment. The earth is not too kind in retaliating against our mistreatment of it. Plus, when we engage in practices that result in its destruction, what do you think will happen? This is our home, our economic generator, or peace of mind and that of our future. Stop destroying it with garbage and filth? Are we simply showing signs of how our homes truly look like? Either way. We need to take care of what is our own and not try to damage it.

I put the blame for the indiscriminate disposal of garbage squarely on the litterbugs. Those who practise this behavior are most unpatriotic . Why is it so difficult to keep your country clean?

Legislation is meaningless if not enforced.

      • Neville
        April 3, 2019

That’s the problem. In Skerrits Dominica no laws are enforced. Oh, tell a lie, as soon as an opposition politician or supporters passes wind they will be arrested by the DOMINICA GESTAPO.

  9. April 2, 2019

Skerit will come on radio program appeal to the public not to dump garbage anywhere,Instead he announce that there will be consequences if anyone cought littering or dumping garbage unauthorize places,I seen other countries had the same problem they put measures in place and solved the problem,It seems Skerit doesn’t want to force laws he scared to lost votes,

  10. April 2, 2019

Skerit administration doesn’t care about the people of Dominica health he only care to remain in power he’ll handout the country resources to remain in power It can be solve if the government put measures in place,It easy to be solve.

@ Dahman, It would be better to have said it’s Skerrit, who been doing the dumping alongside Roseau River that would make a nasty person like you are feel much better dont you thing? There some Dominicans that is very house proud and there’s some I would not drink a glass of water from them. Having said that. I have done lots of travelling around the world and came across all sorts of nasty things it’s not just Dominica, but it’s something that we the people and governments must address immediately with heavy fines regardless of whom they are.

Dominicans too untidy and inconsiderate. No morals no values. The only reason why we can still call ourselves the “Nature Isle” is because we are underpopulated and the majority of our tiny populace lives on the coast. As a result, we are not able to litter and dump how we want wherever we want all over the island, even though we trying our best to non the less. My other concern is the cement truck drivers who empty whats left in their trucks in rivers, road sides, streams and ravines. Is there no protocol or environmental consideration for emptying your mixers? And if you tell them anything they want to eat you alive. Ive seen people dump rubbish under signs that clearly say no dumping of rubbish or EC$5000 fines. Dominica is really too free. If you look at Elmshall road from the Bath Estate side you will see more rubbish hanging over the side of the precipice. WE either have absolutely no pride in keeping our surroundings clean, or Solid Waste is doing an absolutely horrible job.

Some time back , we would bath , wash and cook alongside the River . That was then , this is the now , some Dominican’s as they continue to enjoy the spoils of materialism , rubbish is the end result . They dump some , while at the same time living it . That’s Nature for you! .

    April 2, 2019

Of course this is wrong but I do not see much difference, the town looking like garbage too. I’m not surprised our P.M. advises CBI applicants there is no need to visit their new country because they would not be impressed with our capital being such a dump and maybe change their mind.

      April 2, 2019

AMEN. Roseau is becoming a dump more and more. Not only that, the place dead dead dead. Friday and saturday night on a month end? nothing to do but go to Garage where people get shot, One Pot, DAVOS or Jr’s. All small bars that arent savory to many visitors. Where can i get a decent meal that isnt fried In Roseau after 4pm that costls less than EC$50? nowhere. I feel sooooooo sorry for visitors. Especially if they dont know anyone here., your options will be even smaller.
