Cricket West Indies convenes emergency summit to address performance challenges

Cricket West Indies (CWI) has launched a two-day emergency strategic summit in Trinidad aimed at confronting persistent performance challenges and initiating sweeping structural reforms across all levels of West Indies cricket.

Held at the Hyatt Regency Trinidad from August 10–11, the summit was convened at the request of CWI President Dr Kishore Shallow and brings together a high-profile assembly of cricket stakeholders. Attendees include legendary figures Sir Clive Lloyd, Sir Vivian Richards, Dr Desmond Haynes, and Shivnarine Chanderpaul, alongside current senior players, head coach Daren Sammy, and key administrators.

The summit is organized under the auspices of the Cricket Strategy & Officiating Committee, which includes former players such as Ian Bradshaw and committee chair Enoch Lewis. The first day centers on “High Performance Strategy and Structural Reform,” with panel discussions examining current team performance and identifying immediate improvement strategies. Day two shifts focus to “Player-Centered High-Performance Solutions,” allowing direct input from players and coaching staff.

Director of Cricket Miles Bascombe emphasized the importance of the summit.

“This summit represents a critical turning point for West Indies cricket. We hope to engage in frank, honest and solutions-oriented discussions.” Bascombe stated. “What we hope will emerge is a unified vision and a clearly defined, comprehensive framework designed to correct systemic inadequacies and close the performance gap at the elite level.”

Head Coach Daren Sammy will lead a feedback session with coaching staff, addressing the team’s playing style and immediate challenges. Players will also have the opportunity to speak candidly about their experiences and ambitions.

CWI CEO Chris Dehring underscored the urgency and intent behind the summit.

“This emergency strategic meeting is not simply a reaction but a necessary intervention… We expect deep, transparent conversations… and what we hope to emerge is a serious, organization-wide commitment to change,” he said.

Dehring added that CWI is prepared to support the reforms with the necessary resources, infrastructure, and leadership.

A press briefing will be held at 3 PM on August 11 in the Hyatt Meeting Room, featuring a moderated Q&A session. The event will be broadcast live on the Windies Cricket YouTube Channel, offering access to journalists, fans, and stakeholders.

The panel will include CEO Chris Dehring, Director of Cricket Miles Bascombe, Sir Clive Lloyd, and Committee Chair Enoch Lewis. Bascombe is expected to provide detailed insights into the strategic themes and long-term plans developed during the summit.

CWI has confirmed that implementation of the summit’s outcomes will begin immediately, with regular progress updates to follow as reforms are rolled out across the organization.
