11 murder cases for January criminal assizes; most ever, says DPP

Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Gene Pestaina has confirmed to Dominica New Online that there are 11 murder cases for the 2012 January criminal assizes.

The assizes will open tomorrow (Tuesday, January 24) and according to the DPP this is the first time ever so many murder cases are going to be dealth with.

“This is the first time ever that we are seeing all these murder matters at one time on a courts cause list and it speaks volumes for the administration of justice,” he said.

The assizes will be held at the High Court on the Dame Eugenia Charles Boulevard and will be presided over by Justice Bernie Stephenson Brooks.

One of the murder cases includes that of a family in Soufriere who is alleged to have beaten their brother, Harrison Williams, to death. Allegations are that on September 24, 2011 Lauretta and Herbert Xavier and Manuella Williams were involved in an altercation with their brother. It is reported that the altercation caused his death.

Other murder trials include those involving Albert Steven Jr, Shane Degallerie, Stebin Valentine, Sherman Webb, Garvin George and Kenrick Tyson.

Other cases to be dealt with are five wounding and five matters of a sexual nature.

Also listed are theft and burglary.

As a present law enforcement officer and former federal agent for the U.S.A and with a Criminal Justice Degree from the U.S.A, the penalties and the laws need to be changed because if not Dominica will be worse than some Cities in the U.S.A , Laws need to be toughened and strengthened and enforced without hesitation. I am a Dominican by descent and very proud of it. I plan to move to Dominica shortly and come home to live. Maybe I can provide some assistance to the Criminal issues in which to curtail the crime and make it safer for the people of Dominica. The citizens deserve to be safe from harm and rely on the courts and the police to protect them.

Had they not removed Behanzin from the Bench, six would have come last year, because he had almost completed six of them. The one the system is trying to drop is a very interesting one, the murder in wall house because of who accused father is! Let us see what the DPP does about that one

I was listening to the news and I heard of this gentleman who has to appear before the law for attempted murder.

I would like to ascertain who this gentleman is by the name of Malcolm Sandy ( Hope I have the correct name and spelling).

    Thanks in advance

11 murder cases at one sitting is frankly 11 too many.I see things getting to the point like my home town London and unless something is done very quickly Dominica will not only surpassed the rest of the Caribbean for crime, mainly murder but will be on par with certain parts of Britain and the united states of America.I would like to appeal whole heartedly to the government of Dominica that criminals who are found guilty must pay the penalty because softly softly approach does not work and will be the catalyst for total lawlessness.

are you part of the rank and file of the police force? the police do not have to come on the radio to advise you on persons of interest in the matter or what has been unearthed. you will find out in time.

That’s a great question. When he was alive every time something went down his name was broadcasted all over the media. Now that he is dead persons of interest (if there are any) are a big secret?

Mori, you need to watch the world news. If you live anywhere other than DA, please, open your eyes and ears. I live in a small city in the USA and young pple kill each other everyday, especially blacks. when there are two deaths in one day, we look at it as very good. So stop blaming the government for the crimes committed.

FINALLY!!!Dominica catching up with the rest of the Caribbean sigh..finalllyyy..If we not catching up with progression we better catch up with something unfortunately it’s with crime and murder rate..OMG I hope we can surpass St lucia,St Kitts, Barbados with our murder rates..Dominica goal should be to surpass Jamaica and Trinidad murder rates..Yes,We Can..Yes, We Can.. strictly satire..U heard!!

      January 23, 2012

I guest you people don’t know the word sarcasm..I’m being sarcastic..Since Dominica is not making any progression forward we choose to follow the rest of the Caribbean I go backwards with crime/murder rates.

That’s 11 from different times last year not 11 this year.. Their cases are being dealt with this month.. This does not reflect 11 murders for 2012. We not even up to 5. Not saying it’s a good thing I just don’t like how they report this withought mentioning this is not 11 murdera for the year. This will have ppl thinkIng year just start n we up 11 already.. They need to do something bout these animals n stop feeding them in stockie n just hang their

More than likely the eleven murder trials in the January assizes don’t stem from 11 murders committed in 2011. Murder trials hardly ever get to the high court within a year of the offence being committed.

If those pple reading don’t have commonsense, of if they did not learn english, is whose fault. Everyone should know that January criminal assizes is for cases of the year before and beyond.

I really need someone to place this in context for me! “This is the first time ever that we are seeing all these murder matters at one time on a courts cause list and it speaks volumes for the administration of justice,” he said.

Its time to bring back an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.(when you kill, no question asked, just kill you except in self defence.) After they commit the crimes and some family lost a husband, son, daughter etc. tax payers have to pay to keep them alive. I say bring back hanging and you will see how fast the crime rate will drop
