$2.7 million worth of marijuana goes up in flames

The marijuana being destroyed
The marijuana being destroyed

The police in Dominica have burnt close to $3-million worth of marijuana which they say is a clear signal that the war against illegal drugs is being won.

And they have a strong message to those who are involved in the illegal trade.

“We want to send a clear message to the drug dealers out there that they have to find something productive to do and nothing like destroying the youth, especially of this day,” police PRO, Inspector John Carbon, said.

The illegal substance was destroyed at the Police Training Facility in Morne Bruce on Wednesday afternoon.

A total of 2,114 pounds of the marijuana were destroyed. Additionally 3.5 pounds of seeds and 3,720 plants went up in flames.

Inspector Carbon said the exact street value is $2,737,500.

He pointed out that the marijuana destroyed was imported into Dominica. However he said those involved in the trade have resorted to growing it locally. “But I will say here that as long as they continue to grow it, we will pursue them in the bushes or where ever they decide to grow it,” Inspector Carbon warned.

He said drug dealers ‘are trying to be careful’ when they cultivate and distribute marijuana but pointed out that ‘we are on top of the action.’ “We will outsmart them and we will capture them,” he remarked.

The police last destroyed marijuana on February 3, 2012.

while Dominica fights against marijuana, America has 20 out of their 50 states legalize it…..America claim say they fighting the war on drugs, all the doing is trying to stop everyone else from getting the profit they can get from growing their own….and Dominica like a donkey want to fight down the weed like America claim say they doing. continue being idiots and not realize the economic gain marijuana has to offer.

    • August 1, 2013

      What is the economic gain?

I never heard of 20 States in America has legalized marijuana. Which States has legalized it? I thought it was only three States, Colorado, Arizona, and Virginia. Maybe I was sleeping when 20 of the 50 States said it was OKAY to LEGALIZE MARIJUANA. I also thought this was done on the condition that it would be used for MEDICAL REASONS.

    • orchid

Dominica cannot handle the legalization of marijuana if they cannot get their business in order. Legalizing that drug will only result in more mental illness and less of a desire to better oneself. We cannot send that message to the youths. I think the police are doing a good job by letting drug dealers know that this will not be tolerated. Dominicans should support them and send a message to outsiders and locals that “we will not tolerate you using our country as a drug trading ground.” I hope Chief Carbon deals with the Cocaine next because that is even deadlier. Keep Dominica Clean!

Dominica’s economy did not lose 2.7 million dollars. They never had it in the first place, and this is NOT how Dominica should boost its economy. More marijuana use equals LESS EDUCATION, which will result in MORE POVERTY.

Why can’t we be more progressive, a little bold in determining our future rather than “following the pack” and the rules of other nations. Wasn’t that the point of Independence? I can imagine the reports in 20-30 years after Marijuana has been legalized and profitable everywhere else in the world, we’ll jump on the band wagon, ask for aid to develop our product, gain market access, etc. because our unspoilt soil is so superior, blablabla. How many times do we have to be exploited before we learn that we have to get to market first, bend, create change rules as needed (and as all the successful others do in order to develop our economy.

We willingly hand out alcohol as we watch it destroy our families and productive citizens, then pat ourselves on the back by burning some weed? And have the audacity to tell local growers we are coming to get you. Hello…this is nation of 50,000 people, the person you are trying to “get” is probably a struggling relative, friend or businessman who is paying taxes to keep you (the police and rest of the gov’t) employed.

    What a sick joke!

What a waste of precious natural resources. And what a pity the smoke from this conflagration could not have been captured, stored, and dispensed carefully to all the stressed out people who go about their lives wound up like a coiled spring, unable to relax and enjoy the little pleasures of life.
It is time to decriminalize the herb.

    August 1, 2013

To the Chief of Police. An incinerator is needed. The entire atmosphere above Kingshill, Melville Battery and all the way to Fortune was saturated with the smoke of ‘ganga”. you can say that the communities mentioned above and perhaps further afield was overwhelmed with marijuana smoke. those living closer tot he action could even have been “charged”. Talk of the impact of secondary smoke.

Find out how much an ounce cost, then since 16 onces make a pound multiply by 16 then by how many pounds was burnt. Also find the price of one joint on street then find its weight. Then do the maths. It will give you street value. Simple mathematics not complicated.
