$500 for marijuana seeds

A 22-year-old Bath Estate resident has been ordered to pay a $500 fine by the courts.

The fine was slapped on Nashon George on Tuesday, by Magistrate Candia George.

He was found guilty of possession of cannabis.

George was told that he has to pay the fine immediately, or face one month’s imprisonment.

Police recovered cannabis seeds on Tuesday (27th March) in a clear plastic Ziplock bag hidden underneath a board at the home of his friend Yannick Patrick.

When confronted by officers, George admitted to owning the seeds.

Magistrate George warned the young man about his use of the illegal drug after handing down the sentence.

Magistrate Candia George et-all I respect you but note, Marijuana NEEDS to be legelised and/or decriminalied. Stop wasting our 6 to 8 years of college on something so trivial, unless you are just a glorified fund raiser for the state with a law degree. Two words for you – coke and crack! you en see nothing yet till meth gets popular, NOTHING.

You should know the criminalization of Marijuana started in the U.S as purely political due to being favored over alcohol by blacks back in the post slavery days. Do the research please, STOP WASTING YOUR and our TIME!

While I agree with you totally that there is no acceptable reason as far as I am concerned for marijuana to be illegal, the fact remains that it still is illegal and as such we have to be law abiding and treat it as illegal until we get the law of the land changed.
I think that all these sentencing for marijuana related offenses should heighten the fight for us to speed up the process and become more diligent at getting the appropriate people to work on getting the laws changed.
We also need to share our research and help educated the ignorant to the uses of marijuana and the reason as to why it was made illegal.
      Blessings.

You are right. Leave the MJ alone and concentrate on the hard stuff. But the U.N. doesn’t want that. That is why they are persecuting those with anything to do with MJ.

What’s also note worthy is that places such as St.vincent where it is preety much decriminalized have far less marijuana users than Dominica. So what are these people afraid of except the old stereotype. But you’re right it needs to be taken to the fore-front and fight for the same as Vincy at the very least…

why did tax payers have to pay to prosecute a man for owning seeds….Why is marijuana against the law? It grows naturally upon our planet. Doesn’t the idea of making nature against the law seem to you a bit . . . unnatural………………”By any of the major criteria of harm – mortality, morbidity, toxicity, addictiveness and relationship with crime – cannabis is less harmful than any of the other major illicit drugs, or than alcohol or tobacco.”

How many deaths around the world have been caused by the direct use of weed?

How many deaths around the world have been caused by the direct use of alcohol?

How many deaths around the world have been caused by the direct use of cigarettes?

How many deaths around the world have been caused by the direct use of those ‘energy’ drinks (monster, redbull, etc)

Check the stats so we can see what’s really destroying us…!

why do we in the caribbean still appear to be behind the curve, we not even having diccussions about this so called war on drugs and what it has brought us. imean the same mistakes were made with the handling of prohibition, where the laws enacted only ended up enriching some distasteful people and make them almost untouchable and huge amounts of influence, both social and political. It also generates a serious rise in violent crime as the business is too lucrative to not cause conflict. we have seen the death of countless of young men who were are currently chasing the elusive riches of drug dealing and it has caused some serious social issues, however we keep doing the same thing to so called, “combat” this. we jail we, charge, we kill , we deal with those being lost at sea, we deal with those killed in the game, but we never consider maybe we should change our approach. this is now being disscussed in the Americas as they have seen that they need to try something new. I mean do we really think that charging this young man $500.00 will cause him to stop interfering with weed or would it only cause him to plant more or deal more to try to pay out his debt? what if the plant was liberalised and some caveats and best practices be developed as well as standards for what is made available to the public for consumption( the same done with any other product, prepared for sale to others, or consumed colloquially), and most importantly , this is taxable, so we raise money to try to counter the impact of the drug if any. why isnt this a topic being disscussed especially seeing that we have more than 50% of certain demographics being smokers or sympathetic to smoking weed.

Marijuana is not a curse, it is a sacrement and a medicine! How it is treated is based on ignorance. Marijuana and its cousin hemp could solve a lot of the environmental and social problems once the veil of ignorance has been lifted. So Jah say!
