Alleged thieves denied bail

Craig Dublin,30, of Mahaut and Kennon Joseph of Massarce, both accused of breaking into a Checkhall  home and steal two laptops and a Sony Playstation, have been denied bail as they are considered a flight risk.

The two appeared before Chief Magistrate Evelina Baptiste yesterday, facing charges of burglary and handling stolen goods.

According to those charges, on September 10, 2010 the men allegedly burglarised the home of Clayton Shillingford taking the said items, costing over $5,000 belonging to Andrina Mitchel.

The two men also allegedly dishonestly received one of the laptops between September 10 to October3, 2010.

One of the grounds on which the prosecution objected to bail was that they believed the men and stolen items would be shipped to Guadeloupe once released. According to police the defendants would  frequently travel to the island.

The state also argued that if the men were granted bail they would interfere with investigations  as all of the items were not recovered and a third defendant was being sought.

“I do not have a passport. I have been in Dominica for over five years and I never travel. I have no reason to interfere with investigations,” Joseph defended himself, while his counterpart Dublin remained silent.

The magistrate ruled that bail be denied but is to be reviewed in due course.

The preliminary inquiry into the matter is set for March 29, 2011.

HOPEFULLY CRAIG COME OUT A FREE MAN AND HE CAN GO HOME TO HIS SON AND MOM. HIS FAMILY IN ENGLAND ARE ALL PRAYING FOR HIM TO COME OUT AND HOPEFULLY HE WILL LEARN FROM THAT AND NOT GET INVOLVED IN DEM PEOPLE THING IF U STEALING STEAL BY YOURSELF.

LOL I am really killing myself laughing here because you are so right. The system in DA just messed up for real. Man killing man and getting bail. People accused of stealing a laptop and they are denied bail because of flight risk. Where did our magistrates practice law? It has to be backwards as for the police, they need to be schooled to know what charges to throw at people.

    @Anonymous:

Give me a break! Are you sleeping? They are humans, weak of spirit and liable to do anything, if they allow Satan, the enemy of our souls to influence them.
How can a man on the path to righteousness do such a thing? The man who was recently charged in the gun incident is a practicing Christian. Did he not go to church on Sunday and that same day took a gun and almost used it on a lady? I would not be surprised at what people do, religious ones or not.
In any case, they are not serious Christians who have intentions of living relevant lives.
As it is stated, “Going to church does not make one holy.” They are in need of rehabilitation. Much more could be stated about that. Some other time.

A laptop and a sony playstation? Materialism in those children head!

Firstly, they burgularized the people’s home so it was planned. Secondly, the items were hidden which means it is inside their homes, not visible for outsiders. Thirdly, the cost of those items. Penalty under the law of Allah, cut off their hands. This is a true deterent for these crimes.

Those who support criminal behaviours are worse than these criminals. May Allah deal with you the way He sees fit. Amen.

The thing is those small thieves can’t afford the highly paid avocat diable, and that is why they will not get bailed. But the drug dealers and money launderers can afford the avocat diable. God help you, avocat diable, your day will come.

Chief magistrate, thank you for holding unto your principles by beginning to follow the rule of law where it applies. Although this is minor, i would also wish to see you exercise the same when it applies to capital crimes. For it’s only with your help and others like you can we maintain a safe and crime free Dominica. Please continue to protect Dominicans from those who fell that crime is free and when committed they can and will always get away with it.

(THANKS AGAIN) and please keep up the good work..

Thank you Dominica News Online for keeping us posted with day to day Dominica news. We in Massacre, in Dominica, and even the diaspora need to know who are the Criminal Elements in our society, in a small community like Massacre. There must be a face placed to some of the crimes taking place. When you pass through Massacre at 10am in the mornings and see the number of young men sitting at the side of the road one wonders, How do they survive?

More than the accused is the persons who would buy these stuff, knowing very well that these guys don’t own these product.

One of the young men is one I knew from birth. It takes, “a Village to rise a Child”. He was spoil, given everything he wanted by both parents. He saw how people obtain “fast” money with a gambling shop and drug dealing from part of his environment. And while that should not dictate who he grow up to become, he is not immune. This guy did very well at CXC. Beyond that look at his history. This is NOT his first running with the Law both in Dominica and Guadeloupe.

Yes he may be innocent! But how do we his “supporters” and “haters” help him to get out of the slams that he often finds himself in? How do we help him to use all the Subjects he obtained at CXC level for his good and our society benefits?

Society needs to be protected or safeguarded. WCMF, Christmas and Carnival is very near. Our homes need protection.
